- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Author said 'fanboy'. Author is a *****.
- Mutifus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"apple fanboi are silly like monkeys drinking their own pee!!"
And PC owners such as this guy have such enviable grammatical skills... - The_Decryptor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"OSX is based on linux and can run linux apps."
OS X is based on BSD, and BSD != Linux.
I would digg it for the widgets (cool, although the gmail one wont work), but i wont digg it as the submitter has no idea what the term fanboy means. - reynaldo77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You know, Google has been getting a lot of ***** lately. And most of it was deserved. But, in my incredibly drunk and humble opinion, this story deserves a spot in the next diggnation podcast. Because google did something right again [finally] ... and it deserves just as much attention as their failed experiments.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Ughh I hate when people on here say "fanboys"; haha I would love to see Kevin or Alex read the description of this story.
- xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Seriously what the hell is up will people using the word "fanboy"
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4> What is it about Macs anyway? I have to work on them
> 9 hours a day and quite frankly they are boring after the first week.
Whoa! You're right. What have I been thinking all this time?!? I'm throwing my boring Mac out the window right now and rushing out to get one of those snazzy, sexy, drool-inducing Dell PCs I keep hearing so much about. Thanks for setting me straight on this. - the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The gmail widget is freaking huge. I like the unofficial one i currently (and previously) used - Mailpop. Its a better size, and it speaks to you when the dashboard is hidden to say when a new message arrives.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Cool, I'm happy for you Mac users.
Personally, I wouldn't use MacOS, because I have Linux. (Which is much better, but harder to use, and less user friendly in general) :) - fiddelm3742, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now if only Google Chat from within Gmail worked in Safari. Then we'd have something.
- e_mnc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The answer to the Google question "Where did the famous 1984 commercial air?" is not completely correct.
Googles answer "Half-credit if you named Super Bowl XVIII on January 24, 1984. The commercial also aired in Twin Falls, Idaho to qualify for 1983's advertising awards."
It also was updated and shown at Mac World 2004.
I must be a real fanboy :-) - wbgo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I downloaded the widget and got as far as the Lil' Snitch box asking if it should be allowed to contact 'http://mail.google.com'.
There's no way I'm going to use it if it doesn't even support https. Stupid Google. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why are people who use real computers "fanboys" and people who use Windows "normal"? Surely it's the other way around.
- DerekJ212, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Havent these been implemented by third parties already?
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> OSX is based on linux and can run linux apps.
I just watched Mulholland Drive a month ago and I wasn't nearly as confused by that as I am by your post. - kneeare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1your fanboy comments are so clever! ur just too funny!
- GreenAlien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmmm, would of dug this story, had the submitter not blurted out "fanboy", twice. Can't digg.com do a search for inflammatory keywords like "fanboy" and prompt them to edit/re-submit the story? (or tell them to get a life and stop tarring people with the same brush).
NO DIGG. - zodieman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OS X is based on BSD UNIX running a custom Carnegie Mellon MACH kernel with a lot of custom stuff in there. The typical UNIX file system layout is there but it only has a passing resemblance to Linux. Startup scripts are not in /etc/rc.d but in various /Library directories. The interface is not X11 but Quarz, an on-the-fly PDF rending engine. Anyhow, it's quite a nice assembly of different technologies very nicely laid out (application bundles are wonderful). The typical UNIX percan can get around but not after learning the differences and layout. Windows in my opinion is a total mess in c:windows and don't get me started on the whole registry thing.
Fanboy? Hate the term, but I am because I've used everything else and I keep coming back. Apple's design is more than just the outside aluminum skin of their boxes. It runs deep into the software. - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Google does Macs"
*shudders* TOO MUCH INFO! - buddhistMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The gmail widget doesn't work for me. It tells me that my user name and password don't match. I tried both my user name alone, as well as my full @gmail.com address, to no avail. I even reset my password on Google.
Bogusness and bogosity made flesh. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Im a drunk and im a fanboy of both google and mac - mod me up for comical value - wow it is hard to type this
- dickyducky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Steve rulz!!! haha
praise OUR GOD ;) - plasticated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Gmail widget is amazing. It isnt just a client based solution. When you click on the email, it takes you to that email, in a nicely formatted browser window. The best bit, and something which has instantly made my life 1000% easier is it supports multiple accounts, so you can have as many windows/accounts open as you want! Google and Mac, I love you. And I dont care if that makes me a fanboy ;)
- Christofer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wbgo,
Thanks for pointing that out! I was wondering if the whole session (as with Gmail Notifier) or only the password is made through https... Never thought it would be this bad. - denyba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sure they'll be fine but these widgets don't seem life changing.
Also: If I never see the word fanboy again I'll be a happy man. - CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol. Digg for the small description.
- revgriddler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Eh, they're OK. I'm sticking with my old 3rd party widgets.
- Christofer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm, if you look inside the widget you'll see these (among a lot of other stuff of course):
// The authentication URL.
Gmail.authUrl = 'https://www.google.com/accounts/ClientAuth';
// The token URL.
Gmail.tokenUrl = 'https://www.google.com/accounts/IssueAuthToken';
Hopefully it's something unimportant that is fetched via http. - dhoefler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1linux, osx, windows, unix, solaris, etc...
Use what works best for you.
There's not such thing as THE BEST operating system. - spareus157, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's next a Google music store?
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not everyone who uses a Mac is a fanboy...
Or maybe they meant GOOGLE fanboy..?? o_O - wrinkles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google widgets = Gidgets
Damn somebody beat me to it. http://gidgets.org - bradspry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The best part of the story, was Google is looking for Mac developers:
http://www.google.com/support/jobs/bin/search.py?prior=Macintosh+eveloper&query=Macintosh+developer - collapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0meh I prefer GPeek for gmail...
- romanko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dang, about time, too!!! :)
- aboris26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Google Tries to do Macs, Macs say they are now bi."
Google, nice try, you ALMOST got something right, good effort. HOWEVER, these brand new, newly designed widgets are NOT compatible with Intel Macs, they are not Universal Binary, those extra three clicks of the mouse in Xcode were aparently too much effort. Google is just screwing everything up, what happened to you Google, you used to be cool. - zodieman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0aboris26:
Firstly, Widgets under Mac OS X are not binaries, they are Javascripts. Thus, they are PPC/Intel OS X compatible and I checked too. Open up the widget bundle and dig around. All JS scripts. There is a binary in there for Keychain integration and it clearly states in Get-Info that it's universal. Read up before you state stuff you don't understand. Google DID do it right.
dcline:
You're welcome. The best way to understand OS X is to use it but dig under the eye candy to see the UNIX stuff and the way things are designed and laid out. - elmimmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> I have Linux. (Which is much better, but harder to use, and less user friendly in general) :)
Define better, then ^_- - TheShrike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's the point? You can have Mail check several gmail accounts at once, Both Safari and Firefox will let you search your browsing history...
Bah. Useless widgets. - cms42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0those of you who keep asking if OS X will run Linux binaries the answer is no, but you can take source for Linux and compile it for OS X granted you have all the dependencies met. Just like Linux. best bet is Fink http://fink.sourceforge.net/ it is a package manager for OS X. Not sure if they have a universal binary yet but it's on SF so you can always compile it yourself.
- TokinDerrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0any link to these widgets?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Portuguese / Brazilian: http://www.htk.com.br/noticia.php?noticia=135
- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All the widgets suffer from a lack of collapsibility. They eat up way too much real estate on my iBook's screen.
The Blogger widget would be perfect if it could collapse when not being used and if it grabbed my template, or at least let me save a new one into the widget... Still, I downloaded them and am trying out the history. Want to show the love so Google brings other apps over to the Mac. - fbriggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the search history widget is really laggy.. would be cool if it weren't super slow
- behemothaur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think next is a Mac *FANBOY* movie kinda like Brokeback Mountain. But with google widgets. Awesome.
- dcline, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Zodieman, Thanks so much for the explanation of what OSX "is". This was the kind of info I was hoping for as I know little about linux and less on OSX. Now I get to go learn a little more on whether I need to pick up a new mac and try it out.
- mdshort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone know if Linux Game Binaries would run on a Mac Intel (unix)?
- Mutifus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Wow, so everyone seems to think using the word "fanboy" is a mortal sin."
That's right, because it is! You sad sap. :) - phlll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^
Never knew that. - TokinDerrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.google.com/macwidgets/
