Is Picasa available for the Mac?
While Picasa isn't currently available for Mac OS, we realize that a lot of photographers and photo enthusiasts would like us to offer a Mac version. We'll pass your feedback on to our developers and we may consider this option in the future. - Rfriaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I want Google Chocolate.
- dgblackout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9sounds like a great API to give out, can't wait to see what comes from it.
- TeatimeGrommit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"rich people?" I bought a Mac because it was cheaper! Consider total cost of ownership (TCO). A Mac is a complete computer that does what I need by me simply opening the box and turning it on. With the PC, I needed hundreds of dollars in software to get it to work. The ability to compile *nix apps or just get binaries from people who did it for me helps the Mac in terms of TCO.
But maybe I'm odd since I don't mind running X11 apps on my Mac. I don't care that they don't look "apple-y." - atomicfireball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I actually know the guy at Google that got their management to start supporting the Mac. He went to management and said "why don't support the Mac better", and their response was, of course, that the Mac was too small of a market. To which he responded, "More people use the Mac than speak Estonian."
They realized that their attitude toward the Mac didn't really fit with their philosophy which was to be as inclusive as possible. They expended resources developing their search tools for minor languages and countries; why wouldn't they devote resources on a computing platform with millions of users?
And as for linux tools - the base C libraries can be used on Linux, these are just Objective-C wrappers around those existing libraries, which, by the way, can be used on Linux using GnuStep. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7What are you talking about? Linux is DIY. I mean, that's why you use Linux, right?
And Google already released their data APIs for PHP, Java, Python, etc. They just added Objective-C to the list. - navvvv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Roll on, some enterprising soul writing a neat little google calendar/ical integration script
- willi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You buy too much in that "Google do no evil" crap. They want to make money!
- Kingconsulting, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You care. Isn't that why your trolling?
- thinkart, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6chucknorrisjr you are a moron, but wait i shouldnt have to say that...your name says it all
- Lounger540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Since it's their source they can use Wine under OS X with PPC. The original DarWine libraries were meant for PPC apps but you had to compile against them. The only new advantage of Wine for OS X Intel was not needing to recompile.
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Picasa works surprisingly well under Linux. The problem with OS X support is that if Google were to do the same in OS X (use Wine), they'd have to run it under X11, either using Apple's X11 server or by providing their own embedded X11 server, which is what Crossover Office does. Either way, it would be an awkward user experience. Not to mention the interface changes required to make it work like a "Mac App".
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You mean rich-text editing? Apparently they're waiting on Safari 3.0.

"So just because elitist mac users have more money, Google should bend to ever little mac user whim? I think not... google should care about the common man... not some rich people."
Yep, exactly right, you got it. Please shut the ***** up now. - JonRohan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Picasa for Mac, Come on, Picasa for Mac.
- cosequin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2there is support for reading, not writing to ical
- Lounger540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's been done http://spanningsync.com/
- Induane, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Actually picasa runs almost flawlessly under wine. The linux version of picasa runs great but is actually run using a version of wine. I've tested and it appears to work nearly flawlessly under the last few builds of wine. What is interesting in this case is that you can now build wine on OSX Intel, meaning that you can compile wine on your OSX Intel based Mac, then run picasa flawlessly. I'm running it now on my standard PC that has a hd with OSX on it based on the tiger_x86_flat.img available on bittorrent, and I can 100% confirm it works as expected with the exception of the media detector.
- figukoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmmm.... no Google Maps support?
- iNunchuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't care how many API's they release. Why can't they do something to get G-Mail to work with Safari like Firefox or Camino does!? How much Longer Google, How much longer!
(P.S. Also Google Documents too) - galupo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@santaliqueur
Not every one who has a mac is rich.
If you compare PC from other manufacturers with similar specs you will see apple is comparable.
I know plenty of people on older g3's and g4's.
Go back under your rock of ignorance. - colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Mac users also seem to be more loyal customers. If you come out with a Mac version of your product, Mac users will recognize the effort software companies put into supporting their smaller portion of the market, and often support your product out of appreciation. For example, ever since Google started really supporting the Mac, they've gotten tons of good PR from Mac users, all for free.
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Induane, except for, you know, PPC macs?
- monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Sweeeeeeeet ... I'll dig in once I get home :)
- Guder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Isn't there already support? Hell I was able to add gcal support to thunderbird using the ical support.
- willi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Even though Mac's market share is only 5%, but that 5% means quite a lot, because those who buy Macs are usually those who have more money to spare thus more willing to buy and use new technology.
- fildawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How bout GCalDaemon? http://gcaldaemon.sourceforge.net/
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1galupo: Notice how he is quoting someone?
- intellimouse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"They expended resources developing their search tools for minor languages and countries; why wouldn't they devote resources on a computing platform with millions of users?"
The effort that they put forth to translate the Google search pages into minor languages is nothing compared to what you have to do to port your software to the Mac OS. They have a standard translation engine. That's why you have Google in "hacker speak", because it's so easy to do. They don't even have Picasa for the Mac right now because porting to the Mac isn't as easy.
So the human language analogy doesn't really work. I honestly don't think it's worth anyone's time to support the Mac because even though there are "millions of users", they are usually really hard to please and also quite vocal about it if you make a little mistake. Basically they're pains in the ass. - slickrocktrail, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1I scanned the home page and saw a few Google buys....and then "cocoa" quickly in this headline and in my mind, I came up with "Google buys Coke" as the story here. I said, out loud, "wow". Digg me up or down for my ADD.
- orvtech, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3wait ... you do know that there is a picasa for mac already, right ?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2Where is the Fuking Linux love Google?
- stevejobbs, on 10/12/2007, -17/+1as a macfag, I agree with the above statement
