Gmail Notifier for Mac OS X 10.3.8+ (including Tiger) available
toolbar.google.com — The Gmail Notifier is now apparently also available for Mac OS X. It displays an icon in your system tray to let you know if you have unread Gmail messages, and shows you their subjects, senders and snippets, all without your having to open a web browser.

- peterapokotos, on 04/26/2008, -0/+0Finally Google releases their first Mac app. Now if they would only make Google Earth for the Mac!
- natalvc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know, if I had given that story the headline "Google releases their first Mac app!", it would have been on the frontpage by now. ;)
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From The Google Blog:
"Though this is the first, it won't be the last native Mac application that Google delivers. So please, Mac users, stay tuned!"
I am looking forward to more native OS X apps-- - krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"It displays an icon in your system tray to let you know if you have unread Gmail messages"
I know nothing of this system tray you speak of...
;) - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i like it but it doesnt let you specify how often it checks. The preview of messages is great though!!
- modeps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You've got to be kidding me... OSX 10.3.8+ means it includes TIGER?! What a great day. If you didnt say (including Tiger), I totally would have assumed that it wouldnt work.
;) - toks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Grr.... they don't have it for Windows ME!!
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0this has been around on real computers for years. i didnt realize that macs didnt have it yet? what other computing basics are they still missing?
- iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"You know, if I had given that story the headline "Google releases their first Mac app!", it would have been on the frontpage by now. ;)" posted by natalvc
I'll dup this digg now! thanks!! - ciphex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Um yeah so it shows up in the Menubar like iChat can, or system sound settings, or battery status, or network status... ahh the Menubar...
for all purposes of interface and function it is just like the "System Tray" in Windows... except that I can turn things off easily... and 99% of my apps aren't sucked into it as if it were some immense black hole where processes go to stay alive even after you tell them to quit... exit... kill... cease... desist... stop... I WANT MY CPU BACK!
So... we have another slick lightweight utility for that spot in the bar huh? Cool.
Though I just use gmail via pop3 in Mail. Every 5 minutes i know whether there is new mail anyway. That way I control how often all mail is checked.
Mail is such a lightweight program anyway. Its always running on my machine. - rabiddogma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0System tray?
- tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ agreed. maybe that's why google doesn't make mac apps. we already have had the functionality they give to XP for years...
- galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SmeRndmGy: We weren't missing it - there's a ton of Gmail notifiers for the Mac. it's just that Google didn't make them for us.
Say what you will about "real computers" but, as you might have realized by now, when we don't have something we need we make it. Instead of waiting for it to be force-fed to us by various corporate masters. ;) - Killerdeath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First Mac App made by google? Google video uploader for mac has been out for a while:
https://upload.video.google.com/video_instructions.html#downloadingmac - hyperpasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stupid. A Dashboard Widget is much more Mac friendly. Of course, it doesn't work with Panther.
- jimm94, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dashboard is very cool, but it is also a ridiculous memory hog. I have it disabled most of the time. I'm glad this app is not a widget.
- bsharitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At least now we have an "official" product from Google the does the exact same thing GmailStatus has been doing for quite some time.
- dogfighter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and maybe we mac users can more google apps
- beecheyj_14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont like it it wont do custom sounds for new mail so i cant have the "mail mutha f***a" from eurotip
- beecheyj_14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont like it it wont do custom sounds for new mail so i cant have the "mail mutha f***a" from eurotrip
- smaxl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah i want that too
- unkn0wn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I appreciate google finally releasing this for Mac, but it's seriously crap. GMail Status is soooo much better. I can't live without my Growl notifications.
- Zorkon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yay! Gmail notifier!
So, where do I download this "system tray" app that you speak of?
Oh, wait! There ISN'T ONE, you Windows-loving monkey, you!
Perhaps you meant the Dock? http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/tour/4/ - TeChGuRL19, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0finally, mac users gettin' a little lovin'!
- CreativeSon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why is there a dig every time a new google app is made? Theirs apps are nothing special IMO
- salweem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Grr.... they don't have it for Windows ME!!"
Just cant stop laughing that he has ME. - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Say what you will about "real computers" but, as you might have realized by now, when we don't have something we need we make it. Instead of waiting for it to be force-fed to us by various corporate masters. ;)"
apple is just as much of a "corporate master" as microsoft is, if not more. their software will only run on their hardware. microsoft's software will run on basically any modern computer. and by "make it ourselves" i assume you are referring to open source software, and there is a lot more of it for x86 machines than there is for macs. google making something for apple isnt the best example of avoiding the "corporate masters" and making it for yourself. it seems like one billion dollar corporation trying to convince you to use their products instead of buying them from microsoft, because they're a billion dollar corporation, and billion dollar corporations are evil. so buy from apple, where you can only use the hardware we tell you to use, and you better believe it costs a hell of a lot more than normal computer hardware. but hey, the case is shiny and white instead of matte and beige, so isnt that worth thousands of extra dollars? no, it isnt. when they get osx to run properly on a normal computer and make it legal to do so then apple will be a serious competitor, but untill then it will just be another niche market for a few diehard zealots who have convinced themselves that apple is the only way and anyone who disagrees is an idiot. its fine if you like spinning rainbow mouse cursors and computers with the whole machine inside the base of the monitor, but some people prefer to get their money's worth and build their own custom pc where they know whats in it and how everything will work. and if they dont like it they can upgrade it. with apple you have to buy a whole new machine. but i digress...... enjoy checking your gmail on your mac like the rest of us have been doing on our computers for years. - DCJoeDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0God finally, now these mac fanatics can stfu about "where is OUR gmail notifier?"
What was wrong with dot mac, isn't anything apple does godly? - 1337freek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ive had a simple gmail widget for a long time already called gotMailg that simply displays the number of new emails, click on the widget and it directs u straight to ur account
- SpazMuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll digg when Google Earth is released for Mac.
- smackfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll switch to it, for now. One major advantage over the other available apps is that it shows the subject lines without having too go into GMail.
The one negative I see so far is that it takes up a lot of space for what it does. The other apps can show the same info in one icon's worth of width. - blindog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, that was easy. Nice little app with a gray envelope in the top menu bar right next to my clock. ooh, spiffy.
- besouza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FINALLY, Google+Mac= :)
- fef560, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.moviewavs.com/Movies/Eurotrip.shtml
Eurotrip soundbites - MacMan88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i've had this thing for a long time...it's called Apple Mail. just setup the SMTP and POP3 info you lazy person.
- natalvc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"So, where do I download this "system tray" app that you speak of?
Oh, wait! There ISN'T ONE, you Windows-loving monkey, you!"
lol Yeah, I thought about changing it to say 'the menubar' but since I couldn't test the app (unfortunately, the workplace still forces me to use Windows), I couldn't even verify if it put the icon in the menu bar or in the dock, so it felt safer just to copy-paste the 'official' Google text. ;) - DElyMyth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now THAT's a good thing to read! :D
- BioCS.Nerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kinda crappy. No GROWL support, and the icon is kind of ugly. I prefer GMail Status >> http://homepage.mac.com/carsten.guenther/GmailStatus/
