- reevolutn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"it takes eight 8Gbit chips to create one 8GB device" which they plan on doing, you read the story you buttmonkey.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@Ireland: 16Gb = 16 gigabit = 2GB
- jeriqo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Actually, the 4GB nano uses 1x4GB NAND memory.
BUT, there are still 2 slots in the nano, 1 is empty.
Apple could have released a 8GB nano since the begining.. - sophiaperennis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Put two of those suckers in there: 16 gig Nanos. That would be a great bridge between the current 4 gig Nano and 30 gig iPod. I currently have a 4 gig Nano, and a memory upgrade would be nice.
- digga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Rip your existing CDs then.... no-one's forcing you to use the iTMS.
- digga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"it would cost even more to use your own cds considering what you payed for them originally"
But you......... ALREADY OWN THEM! - macattacks10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Ireland wasn't very careful about his capitalization, but it does say on the link that they (Samsung) will be producing 16 gig chips.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If it was magic, it would buy itself.
- yugiohdan6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5the thing that people like about the nano is the physical size of it not how many gigabytes it can hold
- yugiohdan6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4dont the larger capacity nanos use two 2GB chips? Therefore wouldnt an 8GB chip production mean 16GB nanos? and a 16GB chip mean 32GB nanos?
- shickey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't like iTunes either, so I don't use it. I use vPod....simple, fast, hassle free (to quote a local car dealer).
Don't hate the player (ipod), hate the game (iTunes). - typobox43, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They could have, but I'd imagine that they haven't because it'd push the price too close to the price point of the hard drive-based iPods.
- enclaved, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Where'd you get your 6gb Nano? I want one of those, instead of using the 2 and 4gig ones taped together.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Ratteler: it's not about time, it's about selection.
- Mystikal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nano breaks if you drop it...screw the Nano.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I just bought a 1 gig nano for my brother yesterday (I don't have a job and couldn't afford one with greater capacity)
:D - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If this caps lock doesn't start working, i'm going to throw my keyboard out the window. It's making me look so damn foolish :P
- SoxFanNH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe we should have a section that has articles from other MP3 players. There are other (and better) options out there... Just a thought from a very happy iRiver user.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3While I know it's wishfull thinking, I hope theres a large price drop on the 2gb nano. Since thats about all I need for my podcasts....
- arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"So how come I pay as much for a 1GB jump drive, as an iPod nano?"
Because you're getting ripped off by the person you're buynig 1Gb 'jump drives' from?
UK pricing for a 1GB Nano is £99. I bought a 1GB 'jump drive' this week for £21 and it's not a cheap and nasty one either. I've seen cheaper and nastier 1GB drives. - arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So let me see if I've got this right. As time passes, NAND flash technology is progressing allowing for smaller, higher capacity chips. These new chips will then make their way in to consumer devices, including iPods Nanos, which use NAND flash.
Astounding. Who would have thought eh? - BeaMeR626, on 10/12/2007, -1/+48GB sounds tempting but I think I will continue to hold off. I like the Nano form factor, but the storage capacity just isn't there yet for my standards.
- khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@jarcoal
Dude, forget about that guy, what about the poor guy who got killed by his girlfriend? You remember? The one who got his head bashed in by the titanium iPod that belonged to his girl because she erased all his songs! Nature, not scary. Irrational girls with hard sturdy, metal apparati in their hands? Scary. - gyberedeemer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The really big question is whether or not the new one will work with these damned running shoes I just bought.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+68/16 GB nanos would be cool, but I wonder if they'll release 80+ GB regular iPods. I already have about 50GB of music, so the 60 will not be enough for much longer. I would spend the money on an 80 or 100gb model.
- cius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm with Ratteler, anyone who needs their entire music collection in their pocket must have ADD. Except, I need atleast 512 megs because I favor higher kbps. :-)
- iUser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3/drool
seriously, I have an old 20gb ipod, 8 would be nice...but 16 at the size of the nano would just put it to shame =p
Methinks I need to update...I feel like an old granny or something... - sudonim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Doesn't the 4GB nano use 2x 2GB NAND chips making this very feasible. Screw an 8GB Nano, a 16GB one would be amazing and as said above a perfect middle ground between the nano/shuffle/mini lines and the 30GB full size ipods.
- dawgma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So how come I pay as much for a 1GB jump drive, as an iPod nano? Why can't I get a 10GB jump drive for $100 if this NAND flash memory is so awsome?
- TheBenchWarmer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4More like... for the love of god...
Please turn your caps off. - TheBenchWarmer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Haven't we known about this for a while? Still, dugg.
- TheDrunkMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I wonder if Sandisk will beat them to it? They already have a great 6GB flash player (that plays videos and has voice and FM radio recording) and are supposedly waiting for flash prices to come down before releasing an 8 GB version.
The Sandisk Sansa e280
http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/11/more-clues-about-sandisks-8gb-sansa/
It also has a microSD expansion slot for up to 9 GB of space. - JoeCool1986, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Looking back on your comments, IntelMac, you seem to be a lot about self-promotion for you website. Most people aren't very fond of that here on Digg.
- DJS2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love usb keys , they are fantastic , so this news is good for ipods and even better for keys. I've been eyeing the 2 gig titanium sandisk key to replace my warped 1 gig sandisk micro .... maybe I'll wait a little bit ....
- CaptainMordecai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What now? I have a 4GB nano, and i've spent a grand total of $0.00 on itunes music store to fill it (and it is filled). Apple isn't making you spend ***** at itms, let alone $20,000.
Geez. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I can't wait! I did a little speil about this earlier http://paulstamatiou.com/2006/07/18/new-ipod-nanos-at-wwdc/ and I really thing Apple is going the way of the iPod Mini. increased storage, small size, metal case and more colors. It's a win-win.
- gsmithEIDW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2meh.. forget larger flash memory - it has too many limitations regarding longevity and issues surrounding performance (can only erase a block at a time etc). MRAM is the logical progression and this is what we should be crying out for:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRAM
It has potential to replaced both flash and ultimatly to replace traditional hard disks with a solid state alternative with the obvious performance and reliability advantages. - tmcdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2flash is still to weak a product line.. fine if you want to spend nearly $300 for 8gb when you can get the hd based sibling for the same price... and don't give me that crap about the flash based player being more robust, etc.. until they come out with 100gb flash based, who cares. Flash memory has not surpassed hd memory yet, maybe someday.. but 2-4gb increases are not even large enough to be called baby steps...
I'm personally waiting for other companies to STEP-UP and finally compete on price/performance, and RAMP UP PRODUCTION so there finally is a company that DOES IT BETTER-- CHEAPER, and its available EVERYWHERE!! - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm Ready.
- VTStevenVT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is awsome and all, but they should also fix the nano screen with the new 8gb, that thing scratches too terribly easy.
- hrdcregmer808, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5i think my 60 gb video ipod will do =)
- zigziggityzoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Why not add NAND flash to the Hard Drive based iPods? Won't that save battery life?
While we're at it, add NAND flash to my Macbook Pro too. I want an 8 GB cache on my HDD. - morimotonari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2for Samsung to compete against Apple's Ipod phenonomena, they would have to build a Savy Marketing team that would blow Apple's away. And that aint gonna happen, any time soon.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Samsung and Microsoft are planning on doing exactly that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_drive
- Xtant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome, I'm impatiently waiting for the day that i can buy a laptop with flash memory hard drive. moving parts and mobile computing is a bad idea.
- alandd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A small correction: Samsung is producing 8Gb flash chips, not 8GB.
Gb = giga-bit
GB = giga-byte
So, each chip provides 1GB of storage.
The difference is obviously significant however, current iPod Nano models use 4Gb flash silicon and 4GB models are shipping for some time now. It still follows that double the capacity in the silicon translates to double the capacity for the Nano.
We now return to your regular excitement... - jefferson, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8When you say get ready do you mean set aside 20,000$ bucks to pay for music from itunes to fill it. You mac nuts are worse then Jehovah Witnesses. I know its only a matter of time before you actually start knocking on my door!
Knock Knock "We'd like to talk to you about Apple Computers. Have you accepted Steve Jobs as your personal saviour?" - jeriqo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46GB Nano ? Where ?
- TheBenchWarmer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Nah. I'm sure if he DID kill you, he'd kill you for a 60GB iPod. T__T
- f337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wouldn't samsung use these chips in their own devices to compete against apple and their ipods.
