- blurrie, on 11/26/2007, -0/+9finally. right when i decide to ditch my tmobile mda for an iphone. nice.
- dekkeh, on 11/26/2007, -2/+8Well it looks great because you don't have to install anything on the PDA (like with missing sync) but there's one really big caveat: it doesn't work. I put in a support ticket.
- bradleyland, on 11/26/2007, -1/+7So, instead of springing $40 for Missing Sync, you went and spent $400 on an iPhone.... and now you're upset?
Riiiiiiight. - jhall1303, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5Missing Sync is incredibly "buggy" and crashes all the time. I think that Mark Space has become complacent and is in over their heads to be able to offer reliable commercial products that aren't alpha quality. Unfortunately for me I had no choice but to purchase it. I welcome the competition and hope it succeeds so I can ditch Missing Sync.
- guytoronto, on 11/26/2007, -2/+6Free, until it's out of beta. Then they'll start charging for it. And the beta will probably self-destruct as soon as the pay-for final version is available.
- dekkeh, on 11/26/2007, -2/+6This is awesome, I'm going to try this right now and let you know.

- dekkeh, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Well I kinda did dude. Like I said: it doesn't work.
- alexandrend, on 11/26/2007, -2/+5Nice. Will try it tonight with my HTC Touch.
- gordonf238, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3Agreed. I've had a T-Mobile Dash with Windows Mobile for a year now. It doesn't even come with a memo-pad for note taking. I've had to buy it as a separate application. Simple things are hard, and nothing is where you'd expect it to be. It's such a badly-designed application, and quitting programs requires one to go into a "task manager" and shut them down, to free up RAM for other things. There are days I wish I'd never bought it, but now i'm stuck with a contract for another year.
- stray, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3You're not alone, blurrie; I moved from a Blackjack to an iPhone YESTERDAY, because MarkSpace appears to not be interested in getting TMS for WM working on Leopard.
- mentat, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2Windows Mobile's nonexistent memory management system? how Microsoft deliberately hobbles software on devices without touch screens (The T-Mo Dash and Wing have very similar specs, why can't the Dash create Word documents?). How smartphones (devices without touch screens) have less efficient OS code compared to the touch-screen-armed siblings (again, compare the speed and stability of the Dash and the Wing). Or the fact that it's a cumbersome process to quit programs (without hacks like Oxios CloseApps). How programs (except the Phone Dialer) don't have access to the earpiece or Bluetooth headsets (making programs like Skype, Fring, or other VoIP apps annoying to use)? How certain devices don't have fixes for long-existing problems (like the T-Mobile Dash's reboot-loop issue when a ≥1GB microSD card is present)? The presence of functions (like Windows Update) that never get used? How Mobile Office doesn't yet have support for DocX (even though DocX predates WM6)?
Aside from all those issues, I love my Windows Mobile phone. It's far less of a pain than I expected it to be, but I didn't foresee these almost desktop-like problems in an embedded platform. And I'll admit: without some of my WM6 device's functions, I'd be lost and confused. - Wander, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2Missing Sync is pure garbage. It 'worked' with WM5, and it took them forever to come up with a version with WM6 and it never worked correctly. Search their forums and you'll see everyone complaining.
Luckily I now have an iPhone so I don't have to deal with them, but for some reason they have decided to come up with the "missing sync for the iphone", why would anyone need that! - toetagger, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2Perfect... get a 3G iPhone this coming spring.
- dragon76, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2Didn't work for me either, I get an ActiveSync error on my Mogul saying to install version 4.5 or later. i like that it's a simpler and more straight-forward application than Missing Sync or PocketSync.
- ExSlashdotter, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2Exchange -> Windows Mobile over ActiveSync (over the air) is the way to go if you can. I've got about 200 WM5 devices out and about in our company, and we're about an 80% mac environment too.
- surfing, on 11/26/2007, -1/+2I like mine. What don't you like about yours?
- mentat, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1You know, I agree with most of your points. On the other hand, I don't hate it as much as I thought I would. It's Microsoft's stupid differentiation of versions of Windows Mobile (because that worked out SOOO well for Windows Vista). Windows Mobile 6 Professional includes the note taking app, but you have to own a touch screen to get it. For some reason, Microsoft decided to give Smartphone Edition the short end of the stick. However, it's still a step up from my old LG CU400 media phone, and on a price-per-feature model, it beats out the Palm TX. In fact, Palm OS really can't compete with Windows Mobile.
The only close competitor is Symbian, but Symbian phones are so freaking expensive that I'd never be able to get one. Plus they don't have some features that Windows Mobile has. The ability to connect to WPA Enterprise encrypted access points (using systems like LEAP). When I looked at getting a smartphone as a PDA, I didn't plan on getting a data plan, so I thought WiFi would be playing a bigger role.
Other glitches have come up (the mail program hangs sometimes) and other great benefits have come about (Exchange is awesome, and it's nice to be able to read PDFs on the fly).
I love my phone. I hate its software (sometimes). I've never had frustration to your extreme, however. Hopefully Android will give WinMo a run for it's money, and hopefully HTC/T-Mobile will offer a Cross-Grade package for all existing WinMo phones (I'm not holding my breath, though... perhaps a hacker might do it, but still unlikely). - ChromaVita, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Mine always crashed, and for some reasonI constantly got messages about running out of free space, even when i deleted everything that i could, it still said 98% of my memory was taken up. This happened on the Dash, and the Tmobile SDA. It was buggy, It crashed alot, and was a pain in the ass.
- stonedgeek, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1I've been waiting ages for a WM to linux sync app. It's probably the only thing keeping me from dumping my windows box
- brisbin33, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1site blocked at work, anyone with a direct link to the program?
- mentat, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1If your WinMo phone is on AT&T, you can probably convince them to let you upgrade early, since it is only two more months. Of course, this is one of the reasons I hate cell phone contracts, and why I think they're anti-competitive.
- Avian00, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1I wish people still cared enough about Palm to do this. I know, I know... Palm is dying a gruesome death, but I still own one, and I just can't make the leap to spend $40 for The Missing Sync so I can sync a PDA that cost only $100. There are at least a dozen ways to sync a Palm device in Linux, but nobody has cared enough to make anything for the Mac. Not even Palm (yes I know they have Hot Sync Manager for the Mac, but it's a piece of crap).
- mentat, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1God, I hope this is good enough to replace Missing Sync. I mean, it's OK, and it does the job... kinda. Recently, it's been hanging on a single item in my calendar, causing the whole calendar sync to die. Their tech support tells me to delete the item. So I do, and I recreate it (come on, my calendar exists so I can put my events in it, so if it can't handle this event...). The problem persists.
Of course, this isn't the first problem I've had with the calendar sync. I'm a college student, so I have a lot of Tuesday/Thursday, Monday/Wednesday style repeating events. For some reason, Missing Sync creates several duplicates, breaking up my semester-long repeating item into four week (or so) chunks, and then leaves the original, so I have TWO copies of every event in my calendar.
I signed up for Mail2Web's "Live" service for the push mail, and now I'm considering using it as a syncing solution. Exchange is such a sweet set-up if you have a data plan, but it would mean converting everything to Entourage and abandoning iCal and Address Book, which I happen to prefer over Entourage (which isn't as bad as Outlook). Now if only I could use Google as an Exchange Server, I'd be happy, since I prefer Google's solutions over Apple's (where's that .Mac/Google partnership that's been so rumored?)
You'd think the Mac BU at Microsoft would have created an iSync plug-in, since their phones are rather popular, and actually quite nice and relatively cheap (used T-Mobile Dash costs ~$200, Palm TX costs $300. Even if you buy a GSM Unlock and Missing Sync, the Dash/s620/Excalibur still cheaper than the TX, and has more features!). It's excluding an entire market! Apple learned that lesson with the iPod, and I thought Microsoft learned that with Office. - rebrad, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Great, I have to work on my feet and talk on the go. I don't have the time to do the screen dance to dial and rely on voice dial to make a call. Now I can use just one computer.
- ToadX, on 11/26/2007, -1/+1Windows Mobile syncing was in my list of reasons to stop using Macs. I guess it's time to give Leopard a try.
- ripper99, on 11/28/2007, -0/+0This doesn't work with a Treo 750v, tried uninstall and reinstall and doesn't work, emailed Eltima yesterday and they said they are working on fixing this.
- joerod, on 11/26/2007, -9/+8windows mobile is terrible
- HellyWhite, on 11/27/2007, -2/+0Hello everyone! I'm Helen White form Eltima Software Blog. Here is the entry and the discussion about our SyncMate http://blog.eltima.com/2007/11/resume-missing-sync ... . We are currently working on fixes. Be sure, the latest news and updates will pop up there
- s0ldad0, on 11/26/2007, -2/+0here's my 2 cents on HTC...and O2 Online...
/RANT-ON
I have been with O2 since I came to Germany, it was done for me through who I worked with.
They have average call prices and contract plans.
I ended up being a Premium Customer due to my 600 Euro (average) a month phone bills (work related) and high data usage.
Now being an IT Executive I need more than just a phone, I need a PDA type phone.
I am often travelling and require access to Scheduling, Word, Excel and Email functions in places you just can't use a PC.
I also require the ability to take photos and access my network at the office while not at the office.
O2 XDA seemed to fit the bill. this was now my second O2 phone requiring a 24 month contract extension with O2.
First time my O2 XDA went belly up I was very surprised, 3 colour screen with Firmware info being displayed.
No life in it so I call O2 who inform me that an exchange device will be with me in 48 hours...this is a contractual obligation.
6 working days late I receive a non-new device. So in other words, someone else's broken, and now fixed (refurb) XDA comes my way. So with the 2 weekends in the middle I am now without a phone for 10 Days...essential for my job.
Get the device and away we go, for 3 months...
Second time the XDA stopped working was while I was on a business trip, you couldn't have asked for worse timing. My Professionalism may have been questioned for asking workmates to borrow their phones to use my SIM to check if I had any important messages.
Once back in Hamburg I asked O2 about it and I got the "scripted" call centre response of "48 hours replacement device" chapter.
I got my refurb XDA (second hand again) that wouldn't start until the 5th hard reset...
It ended up being 4 working days plus the weekend, so 6 days to me. Any day the Sun come up is a working day for me...and I need that damn phone. Also the second failure to meet a contractual obligation.
Now let's jump forward to the present, now, since the 8th of November my XDA has been dead, for the third time.
It was sent to O2-Online on the 12th of December. Now over 12 (18 real days) working days. However, this is no longer an exchange case for O2. So the 48 hour stipulation no longer applies.
Meaning that in the contract that if my device is busted for a third time I can choose any O2 Online device on offer at the time, plus receive the initial 50 Euro I paid for the phone as a refund.
After 2 calls to O2 today it is clear to me that they have the worst customer service, especially for premium customers that I have ever seen. They will transfer you from department to department, and hide behind contract lengths refusing to hear a thing that you say to them and just stating that you are locked into the contract until the end of the 24 month period. They can take as long as they like to examine your phone and they do not need to give you a loaner phone.
My attempts to have the contract canceled today were unsuccessful, at one point when I was in the Contracts department I asked the employee if I could speak with the Manager of the department, he told me sure, just one moment, and then promptly hung up on me.
Now O2 claims that they do not know where the phone is and I have to prove it was sent. As it was sent per Post there is no DHL or UPS number that I can quote them, so they said, well you better hope the phone turns up or we can't help you any further.
O2-Online is in no way connected to the O2 stores you see all over Germany, they are separate legal entities meaning that I cannot even get a new phone or even a loaner by walking into the store.
So here I am 18 days with no phone, borrowing peoples phones, having no functions on my phone that I require.
Upon complaining that I am about to undertake a business trip again next week, O2-Online stated that they may be able to get me a low level device, but with no features that I require until something turns up at their end either physically or in their system that they can work with.
OUTCOME?
I am still waiting for any info from O2...
In the mean time I have used my premium points to lower my base fee per month to 5 Euro until the end of my contract, totalling 90 Euro.
Once I am refunded my 50 Euro for the phone that leaves me with 40 Euro outstanding, if I make no calls or SMS's.
I can live with that...oh and I get to choose a new phone from them, let's bet it will be the Nokia N95 8GB worth about 700+ Euro.
O2...can't do...
/RANT-OFF - bradleyland, on 11/26/2007, -7/+2I thought you were going to let us know.
- wallstreet1080, on 11/26/2007, -9/+4I still want an iPhone but I locked into this stupid WinMo phone for another 2 months =(
