- bsolidgold, on 10/10/2007, -6/+7Nice!
- kylia27, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Hi sorry to bug you but can you explain to me how to do step 6? Thank you!!
- rmichael777, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3Great! Been trying to figure out how to do this for a while. Thanks.
- kylia27, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Hi sorry to bug you but can you explain to me how to do step 6? Thank you!!
- scoobycarolan, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4NICE!!! Thats what I'm talkin bout. No editing bad mp3s.
- kylia27, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Hi sorry to bug you but can you explain to me how to do step 6? Thank you!!
- fak3r, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16Great, cause people don't have annoying and LOUD ENOUGH ringtones yet... we need more of them - everywhere!
- Frozo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9This could be cool, but most of the previews seem to be random selections of the song. You dont always hear the best part in the previews.
- dcharti, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I've always been curious about that too. I eventually just wrote it off to them using some kind of automated software that tries to pick out the 'juicy' parts of songs for the samples, and the 'off' ones could simply be the result of the software not working very well.
- Ellord, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The previews aren't random, it's generally 40 seconds into the actual song.
- expat001, on 10/10/2007, -18/+8people use iphones? LOL
- BlueStarr, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3***** brilliant. hahaha.
- f4nt0m4s, on 10/10/2007, -10/+13if you are going to go through that much ***** work you might as well just download the 1 or 2 programs that it takes to convert a .wav or .mp3 file into a proper ringtone
buried for being lame- john95127, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Please tell us which one or two programs you are talking about...In actuality they don't exist.
- djh816, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2GarageBand lets you do everything he just said except for convert to mp3 but you can use iTunes or other to do that. In garage ban you can just crop out what you want and have a fade in to get desired effect. In actuality, apps like this DO in fact exist
- aaronm67, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2If you're looking for a good sound editor, http://audacity.sourceforge.net
It's pretty complicated to make the iPhone use a .mp3 file for a ringtone(and it's pretty ridiculous garage band doesn't export to mp3, but that's beside the point).
If you have an intel mac, there are instructions
http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_ringtone_installation.html
If you don't have an intel mac, using the iTunes method is the only way right now.- aaronm67, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Whoops, I'm stupid. I didn't realize this article required direct access to the iPhone. So, I was wrong, pretty much any sound editor will work, same guide except rather then the iTunes previews, you use mp3s you made.
- john95127, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Please tell us which one or two programs you are talking about...In actuality they don't exist.
- jabberwolf, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1Great, now if only they allowed your to play whatever wav file you choose, rather then a selection they chose for you!
Ops Windows Mobile already does that.- frogpelt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Ops... you posted twice.
- jabberwolf, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2Great, now if only they allow you to chose whatever wave file you want, rather then deciding for you in their library.
Oops, Windows Mobile already does that.- jabberwolf, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Sorry for double post. please Bury this one
- john95127, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3I'll bury both
- chazuk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Are you buryig him for bare faced lies or are you burying him because you cant take the fact that the iPhone doesn't support such a common feature every other phone does now?
- john95127, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3I'll bury both
- gweedo767, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I know a lot of people will digg you down for that comment (it might be your tone that isn't helping) but it is true. This is a basic feature that shouldn't require work arounds. Now, the beautiful part of this hack is you get the 30 second preview that you already find on iTunes (perfect for ringtones). Crap...I might use this to get a few more options on my Treo without having to use goldwave or something to crop a song.
- djh816, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1people dugg him down because he was basically saying windows mobile is better than everything else.
- chazuk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Because it supports rongtones?
GTFO!- djh816, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3rong spelling?
- chazuk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Because it supports rongtones?
- djh816, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1people dugg him down because he was basically saying windows mobile is better than everything else.
- jabberwolf, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Sorry for double post. please Bury this one
- oilcan, on 10/10/2007, -8/+8wait wait wait...you mean to tell me, you can't put whatever freaking mp3 you have as your ringtone? on an iphone?! the stupidity of this makes my face hurt XD it's like a 2007 ferrari with an 8track in it :P
- john95127, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4iPhone was developed along the KISS theory, if they tried to satisfy all the bells and whistles they would end up with some abomination like windows mobile.
- aaronm67, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Though almost every phone there is supports adding mp3s as ring tones, it's not really considered "bells and whistles" anymore, it's considered standard for most phones (even non "smartphones")
The only reason to not allow this is because either
a) AT&T wouldn't let them, because ringtones are big money
b)Apple didn't want to, because ringtones are big money- Fhwqhgads, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Exactly.
- spidoman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Yeah, because an option of "Add as ringtone" or "Make Ringtone" would cause the iphone to instantly become windows mobile...

- djnick, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4woop de ***** doo. seriously somethign about ringtones makes it to the front page? Wow digg really has hit bottom
- punkaybbolt, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Can someone explain step 8? I'm using Mac OS X.
- eggyacid, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1does not work for me....
iTunes preview are protected .m4p format and iFuntastic won't see them.
maybe other method of transfer will work, but none of the GUI apps will see .m4p files.- djh816, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1they suggested apps that work. why would you use a different one?
- DocMobile, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1I'd have to agree that the fact you can't just put any file on and make it a ring tone, even if you paid for it, is a joke. This has to be on the list of reasons not to waste $600 on an iPhone.
- Fhwqhgads, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Apple ***** up.
- dragongrrl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1hmmm... will that format play only on iPhones? cos if not, then you can get a free ringtone of any song you wish w/o having to buy or download the song first. please, would someone let me know?
i already know how to cut out a ringtone from a song i already have. what i'd be interested in knowing is if i could get a ringtone for a song i DON"T already have.... - jthomp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Buried for a complete waste of time. Use Audacity.
- delosreyesj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Nice one. This does work with the .m4p format. Follow steps 1-7 on the link. For step 8 goto http://hacktheiphone.com/iphone_first_ten_steps_to_modding.html follow the steps there and then goto http://hacktheiphone.com/iphone_ringtone_installation.html and finish it up. Not too bad...
- sQPha7e, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Anything with "free ringtones" is never good.
- Teridon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nice to have a procedure.. but you don't have to use FairPlay-protected tracks. Apparently you can use any AAC (.m4a) track, and some MP3s.
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/07/16/iphone-hacking-messing-with-ringtones-graphics-and-more/ - Teridon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This procedure is more complete:
