  • sliddick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is so awesome. Not only do I hate Media Player because of it's lame performance, I hate that there is limited playback functionallity like stepping through frames and such.

    This allows wmv's to play in Quicktime with Quicktime's full player functions.

    Truly a great download

    I've been wanting this for awhile, but i think it used to cost money so i never got it. This is great for us Mac users since they stop updating their crappy WMP for mac along time ago. It can't even play WM9 video! It sucked.

  • MightyMik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0VLC works...BUT try scrubbing thru a vid and it just crashes...and WMP does weird phasing/flanging stuff to audio. I'd much rather use QT player. this is sweet.

Yeah, it's file format support is almost awesome, and is quite full featured, but: a) No browser support b)No WMV3 support, which is like 95% of WMVs out there c)Absolutely crappiest less featured controller ever seen (jerky -i.e. unusable- pause button, no decent fast-forward, rewind or frame-by-frame, etc.). I will leave those hideous preference panes aside just because the default config works like a charm.

    I thank and congratulate the VLC team for their work, but I only use it when QT does not cut it.

    evansis: Nope, don't even know what that is. I have Saft and Stand installed though.

    It works fine for me in QuickTime, no crashes so far. Good thing you can turn off the internet playback in the prefs, or I'd have to deinstall it. As is, I'll use it for downloaded movies and wait for an update to use it in the browser.

  • zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The crashing is not unknown. Flip4Mac's components have been known to crash Safari, Firefox, and plenty more. And on top of that Flip4Mac's creators totally ignore the issue. They've even been caught pushing out comments from download sites about the problem.

    I figured it out months ago when Flip4Mac first came out.

    Just uninstall it for now.

    That's why it doesn't respond quickly.

  • streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0VLC sucks at decoding Windows Media because the Windows Media codecs are a bunch of proprietary crap that they had to reverse-engineer (and, for ridiculous legal reasons, couldn't even have a go at WMV3).

    VLC rocks at decoding more open formats like xvid.

    What's weird here is that Flip4Mac licensed the WMV codecs from MS, and now MS has licensed the whole thing back...

    But anyway, I'll try it, if this causes crashes i'll sufffer along with WMP i guess, can't be doing with that.

    DO NOT USE THIS SOFTWARE.



    It caused a TON of very strange problems on my computer when i tried it a few weeks ago, not limited to, screwing with embeded quicktime movies in webpages, refusing to play wmvs in browser, and randomly crashing quicktime even when not in use. It might work for a few people, but i've seen a ton of people with the same problems in the reviews in mac update. After removing all the traces of this, and a reboot i'm back to normal.

    Flip4Mac Support had this to say to me today in an email:

    we seem to be having some problems with the new release and the usage of QT 7.0.4 release as
    well. I am not sure if you are running this program or not, but if you are you are going to have to down-rev back to the QT 7.0.3 version to make it work properly. We are currently working on a fix for this right now and look for it on our site later today or tomorrow.
