- Hockey37, on 10/10/2007, -6/+42Am I the only person alive under the age of 50 (26) that has a normal ringer on their phone?
- celeronxl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23I'm doing this to put a normal ringer on my phone.
- kidcodea, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23not really. this whole ringtone industry is puzzling indeed...
- mentor972, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1760% of the time, it works every time.
- sharkez, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15It works! Can it really be this easy? Do it now because I'll bet something will change soon to make $0.99 possible.
- fluidfoundation, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13no workie workie for me ;( sad in pants.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9You're wrong. Old Phone is the best ringer ever. EVER.
- deathsquadx, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Did anyone notice a Zune ad on the bottom of the page.
- jdoggxperience, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8It's a headache but I'll try to boil it down...
convert the song to acc... even if it's already acc is a good idea
delete the acc file from the iTunes library
change the extension (on a mac, make sure you right click and hit get info) to ".m4r"
double click and it should work... 60% of the time - goldenratiophi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7No, I'm totally with yMY MILKSHAKE BRINGS ALL THE BOYS TO THE YARD excuse me for a minute...
- artifishall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Sidenote, to put a regular acc in the audiobook section rename to m4b
- epyon180, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7It's not?
- grendelwraith, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Hmm that is pretty easy just make an mp3 from whatever input file source you have using Audacity.
Free is damn cheap. - kuuhaku, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6That's what she said!
- pkulak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I wish Jobs would let me put ringtones on my TI-83 already!
- Lou3000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5d
- jasondefaoite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Did iTunes 7.4.1 break this?
- esmaeelp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4my phone is always on vibrate
- TomFrost, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Not *quite*. Just make sure to convert the song to 128kbps AAC if it isn't already, and cut the song down to around 20 seconds. Then give it the m4r extension, drag it into iTunes, and connect your phone and check out the "ringtones" tab to see it.
If it doesn't sync to your phone or doesn't work once it's there, the file is too big! Cut the song down a bit more and try again. - Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Because there are about three phones out there that will let you do that out of the box with no hacking, and most people are either stupid or lazy.
- Lou3000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I think those are only hacked ringtones.
- tropican8, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Step 8 makes no sense. That's a needless quality hit. You already have to transcode from one lossy format to another, no reason to squeeze in a third. Save the file as .wav and convert that to AAC in iTunes, skip LAME.
- bmcnitt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Changed my ringtone to "I Dream of Genie". Excellent. TV themes: http://www.jimeagle.com/tunes.php
- dpmcalli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3From what i can make out from comments, people in the US get screwed with totally locked down phones and are expected to pay for this sorta thing.
- nbeighley, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I'm so happy that I finally get to use the CTU ringtone from 24 that I almost don't care about the 200 bucks I lost being an 'early adopter'!
- Lou3000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Unfortunately, the iPhone doesn't even come with a normal ring. The default is "Marimba"
- EricBoyers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I can see all the m4r pirate ringtone sites springing up now.
- nbeighley, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I'm doing it for a semi-normal ringtone as well. The ringtones are so incredibly awfull on the iphone that I can't wait to get a ringtone that actually SOUNDS LIKE A PHONE! I love apple, but I think they stuck us with ***** tones for the general purpose of charging us 99 cents for something other than a dog barking!
- jkoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As Lou said, it doesn't work to just rename a song -- you have to edit it down. The file will sync to the phone, but it won't play if it's too big.
- jdoggxperience, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I did Lennon's "Imagine" full song no problem...
- Phil13, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4No you aren't. I hate custom song ring tones so much and I wish I could strangle some of the people that use them.
There is nothing more obnoxious than to be sitting in a quiet room, say a college class, and out of no where some God awful rap song starts playing extremely loud on someone's tiny little speaker on their phone. Not only are the songs always horrible, they sound like ***** because of the speaker.
I'd love it so much if custom song ring tones died and we just had variations of the phone ringer... - epyon180, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4And then use the 3G on the iPhone to browse your 3rd party apps with slide-out keyboard! great idea.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes. Figures.
- XMalvolio, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Nevermind, found it! Here's where, for any who are interested: http://www.ccir.ed.ac.uk/~jad/ringtone.html
- epyon180, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well congratulations.
- happynoodle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes, yes it did :(
- JeremyBanks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2no wai!?!?!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1For those with QuickTime Pro...just make any file 30 seconds long or so and export it as a MP4 file and you have full control
- guillemw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Does this work?
http://joemaller.com/2007/09/08/make-custom-iphone-ringtones-work-with-itunes-741/ - MaverickC17, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Got three ring tones in the tab but only one will transfer? All three are checked and I did the same procedure for all three. Why wont the other two transfer?
- carleethian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1NIBBLER
- Sushubh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i see a nokia ad in india..
- kamikaze87, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, you can make your own in iTunes but recently I've tried www.phonezoo.com and had perfect ringtones sent to my phone for no charge other than the rates of Verizon for a text message. The site has all user submitted ringtones so it's updated a lot.
- phenbach, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1iTunes 7.4.1 kills this work around
- SPECOPS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yes, spread the word, the apple ninjas are digging down all the comments showing this new workaround.
- XMalvolio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually, as an FYI, a much better way is to use the Options tab in the Song Info window for any song in iTunes. Edit the times to the times you want the ringer to stop and start, then right click the song and click "Convert to AAC." Then you have the file to rename! If it says "Convert to MP3" instead, just go into Settings Advanced and change your Import setting from MP3 to AAC.
- ThirdPrize, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Another week, another version of iTunes. :(
- cleverboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The original example? "Only God Can Judge Me" by 2Pac? That worked fine with no "length" adjustment, AND it was as simple as renaming the file, double-clicking it, and then syncing my iPhone. Everyone's mileage may vary though.
- scottcropper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Try this, works every time :
