- brainache, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Because the target audience is different. A lot of 'free software' works perfectly out of the box. (Open Office, Firefox, and others) and Linux is a pain in the a** half the time. I consider myself a geek, and use lots of OSS on OS X but i couldn't live with Linux, it was just too complicated, my hardware often never worked, and my Wireless card didn't work.... and so on.
- SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Open source software is not freeware. And it's better than commercial software in many cases.
- stukdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you're looking for free... http://www.freemacware.com/
500 apps in archive, one new one posted each weekday. - rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Another good site to find Mac OS X goodies:

Not extremely useful since it mirrors only the first page, but whatever. - paulwilde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For a second there I thought the url was freesmut.org.
- theWrkncacnter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1On the same note, I use software based on quality. Audacity and Camino are better than retail programs because they work well and they're free.
- flashboy131, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cyberduck (ftp) and streamripper (radio recorder) I've been using for months, both awesome.
- SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Great place for when you need apps. You often sit wondering about where to find that piece of software...
- theWrkncacnter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LInux is great for what it costs, but OS X, which runs on Darwin has the stability of Unix and the terminal, is the easiest operating system to use IMHO.
I use windows, mac, and linux and so far the mac os to me has the best combination of simplicity and power so far. Sure windows is much more widespread and you hardly have to worry about file extentions and compatibility, and sure Linux isn't limited by closed-source software and hardware, but I think mac is worth the price, because Linux is very rough around the edges at this point, and windows is bloated and difficult to make changes to unless you're much more familiar with it than I am. Mac just makes sense to me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I love how people just love to ignore the facts, I spent less on my macbook then I would have a compairable Dell, HP, or IBM. And I got a big discount on a new ipod in the process. I saved switching Mac, idk what prices you guys are looking at...maybe you still have the apple store cached from 1999? Shift + click refesh.
- heyitsme23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3umm maybe you should research before making ignorant comments like that.
Can you get something compairable to an imac for instance at a close price? didnt think so. - SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4If you consider Linux a pain in the a**, you should try this one called Windows...
- Quavistar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The DST (Digg Server Toasters) strikes again, another server eats the toast:
"Safari can’t open the page “http://www.freesmug.org/”. The error was: “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message." - SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Because people using Macs might want open source software too?
- Quavistar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0DAMN!! Did I do all that? When technology works it's beautiful, when it doesn't it makes you look like an idiot.
- gvibe06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0well ... they surely need some mirrors if they intend on staying on the the net.
Page is still loading. - SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Hmm... That poor server sure didnt last for long... I wonder if it's an iBook G3 running OS X Server...
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2You buy your mac out of the back of a truck or something?
- BrainInAJar, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3pfft... if they're going to make the distinction of "free software", why use the non-free OSX?
Why not use a "Free" operating system like linux? - CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3My point still stands.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -20/+5After you spend so much on your mac, you're going to need freeware =[
