Founder of Netscape ditches Windows for the Mac
gigaom.com — "Marc Andreessen, founder of Netscape, and co-founder of LoudCloud (Opsware) and Ning has finally said good bye to the Windows life, and switched to a Mac."

- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -107/+26I'm not sure that's something to be proud of. "Hi, I failed at life, that's why I use a Mac. It makes me feel slightly less miserable"
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -10/+64I'm kind of surprised that he's JUST NOW moving to an alternative OS platform.
After all, the vision of Netscape was to create an OS-independent platform with the web browser, as well as embracing Java.
BTW, Andressen became a multi-millionaire in his 20's... I'll take that kind of failure ALL DAY LONG! - iFungus, on 10/12/2007, -23/+7Hehe let me see what kind of web browser you can make.
Oh, your Bill Gates, I forgot. I guess he is a failure to you. - theheadguy, on 10/12/2007, -23/+17Haha it's interesting to read what you have submitted to digg... talk about a ***** poor window's fanboy if I've ever seen one!
get a life 7. - attention, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23except, netscape isnt even supported on mac os X anymore
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Wow, I didn't even realize that Netscape still produced a standalone browser -- Why do they bother? Is it just a simple reskin of the Mozilla SeaMonkey browser? I thought Netscape had abandoned the browser market altogether to focus on becoming a portal site.
I stopped installing Netscape on Macs YEARS ago (like, around the time OS X was released with Safari and Mail!) - spyyder, on 10/12/2007, -12/+237of7, did your family get raped by a Macintosh or something. Every one of your posts are always pro Microsoft, anti-apple.
- Me1000, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11^ he is what you call a troll!
- brutalentropy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19If Marc Andreessen is a failure at life, what exactly does that make you?
- alteratti, on 10/12/2007, -12/+11..with so many people switching nowadays, I guess we need a whole new digg section - "Switched2Mac"
- itseffinkasey, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2***** I'm tired of hearing about someone switching to a mac. I'm sure that hes going to use another god damn windows computer again in his life and probably own another one... get the ***** over it apple fan boys damn. Its getting annoying.
- schoate09, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4Whoopdie ***** do. Who the ***** gives a *****?
- andrewa, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Hey, guess what. I no longer consider OS X as an "alternative" O/S. It does everything I want better than Windows does... I walk through the airport every week and see maybe 60/40 users of Macs (I live in Portland, Oregon). Buh bye, Microsoft!
- rholloway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm sure past unpleasantries had nothing to do with it.
- metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7If we had front page stories for every important person that ever used a windows PC thats all the front page would be.
Wow another person uses a mac. Any day now you guys will get that 3% marketshare you've always wanted. - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6What took him so long? And why was it using the O/S that came from a criminal who killed his 'baby' using illegal tactics?

| One thing we have got to change is our strategy -- allowing Office

|
| We have to stop putting any effort into this and make sure that Office

|
| Anything else is suicide for our platform. This is a case where Office has

- mrnoob, on 10/12/2007, -31/+7Netscape is a ***** ***** browser; why would I care what OS he uses...
- Lyph4, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32It used to be THE browser. You know, when he founded it. Oh, and you know Firefox? Where did that come from?
- mrnoob, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4Frankly, I don't care if it used to be *the* browser ten years ago. Netscape was popular when the Internet was new and untested. No one knew what the useful features to include in a browser were, and so Netscape was just a sketchy patchwork of bare bones tools. And if that isn't enough, look where it is today.
- Me1000, on 10/12/2007, -11/+48I wouldnt say he failed,

- Obvioustroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It used to be a very popular browser?
Sonny, back in the day it was the *only* browser. IE was a me-too product. - ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1These Firefox fan kiddies should look at history and see massive amounts of netscape.com mails in bugzilla, even after it was a complete AOL venture. AOL also provided $2 M to Mozilla foundation when they decided to get away from browser business.
They can hate AOL but they should credit them where they deserve.
Another thing is, lead Safari developers already come from Netscape Inc. If Netscape Inc. didn't exist, they could have ended in Microsoft which is the only company of that time to provide that kind of elite developer wages. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"IE was a me-too product." - Obvioustroll

- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10A compsci professor of mine uses Netscape exclusively.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2does he use Windows ME as well?
- Obvioustroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There is still a Netscape browser, but it's not that simple.
First there was Mosaic, which was a student project. Mosaic begat Netscape, which was referred to internally as "Mozilla". Later, the Mozilla Foundation was established to further develop the open source flavors of Netscape. I don't know if any of the old code still exists in the current browsers, but Firefox, Camino, Netscape and others all inherit the Netscape legacy. - pu-z, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Mosaic lead to Internet Explorer as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosaic_%28web_browser%29

- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It matters because of who he is. If you are old enough to have some perspective on the development and growth of the Internet and the Web over the last decade, you might find this story interesting. 10+ years ago, those doing big things on the Internet (like him) wouldn't have been caught dead with a Mac. It's interesting how things change.
Furthermore, if you don't care, then why are you here in this thread? It's easier to scroll down the page and ignore the story, isn't it? Or does it secretly bother you? - stonr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1on dem Nike air force "E" "T" "S" "C" "A" "P" "E"behind de "N"

- maddendude, on 10/12/2007, -36/+5lol @ mac tools. I used Mac at school, its horrible. It trys to be like windows and fails. Years later I consider a Mac again, since windows sucks too, apparently the best program on Mac is iTunes, i got that on my PC for my iPod, and wow that program sucks balls.
And did you hear about that mac thing that deletes your home folder when it detects pirated software. Well of 50% of hte people here probably have pirated software before at least once in their lives, how would you like it if your home folder got deleted?
Furthermore, Linux > Windows > Mac, easily. People use macs cuz they dont like windows, I dont get why they dont just use linux. linux pwns mac so hard. At least windows has gaming, mac has NOTHING.- Me1000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21I used Windows 1.0 in school and it sucked!
Since I havn't used it since im just going to guess it is exactly the same!
*rolls eyes*
Im sorry your so misguided! - Lyph4, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18You don't even know what you're talking about.
I'm going to assume you're a troll and block you, but if you're not you should look up your claims.
The program you're talking about deletes its folder, and only its folder. Nothing else.
I use a mac because it's got a powerful OS that gets out of my way when I need to use it. And I have a desktop with Vista on it. Vista copied more or less everything OS X had and slapped it with a trout. It looks pretty, like my Mac does, but when I go to do something on my PC, Vista stands in my way and won't let me get any work done.
You seem to be confused about what came first, the chicken or the Chicken McNugget, and that makes me feel a little bit sorry for you. - hotdamn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Good god, is that post even real?
- arglborps, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I know, Mac has nothing. Just work and productivity, and that's just nothing you can show off to your other 12 year-old friends. Unless you are a creative person and actually DO something cool and productive with your computer.
But, hey, we can't all be productive, there's got to be some people who use their computers solely for porn and the occasional show-off with AIGLX and beryl on Linux... and before I forget it, there are also creative and productive people on Linux, but they, too, create things and DO and don't brag about their OS... - turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4that thing that deleted your home folder was prettymuch a hoax, you had t click yeah im ok with you deleting my home folder and put in your root password.
- ISVDamocles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I really can't believe you exist. A Linux fanboy who prefers Windows to MacOS X and doesn't know anything about computing history or how computers work, apparently.
Not trying to sound elitist, but as Linux becomes easier to use, we're going to see more and more of this.
1) MacOS came first, not Windows.
2) I've never used iTunes since I don't have an iPod, but I've used Linux iTunes clones (Rhythmbox, Banshee) and from a UI perspective I see nothing wrong. Perhaps the iTunes implementation is buggy, but I doubt it.
3) You're referring to a shareware app, not the operating system itself. You do realize that since most Windows apps require root access, they can hose not just your data, but your entire system, right?
4) Traditionally, most people who use Macs are graphics artists, because Apple guaranteed that one pixel on the screen would be a precise size, and that the color balance of the display would be designed for printers of the time. These people would occasionally convince others as well, mostly because of Apple's strict adherence to interfacing standards they published.
These elements have suffered somewhat recently because of web graphics which need to be designed for the most users out there (Windows users), so Mac displays have lost their color balancing for printers (not that much of an issue, since ICC profiles for printers can adapt the output data to look "right", but it reduces the color range available somewhat).
5) Linux is great, especially compared to Windows, but its primary advantages compared to the OSes out there require the end user to understand how computers *really* work, even today.
For instance, you need to convert a huge number of images from one format to another? Most users would open them up in Photoshop/GIMP/Krita/whatever and grudgingly convert one file at a time. An advanced Windows or MacOS X user would write a C++/Perl/whatever program to automate the conversion process with GIMP.
A Linux user would type:
ls *.jpg | sed 's/^(.*).jpg$/convert 1.jpg 1.png/g' | bash
into the command prompt, wait a few seconds and be done.
Basically, learn what this great tool called a computer can do, and you'll see why:
1) An open operating system is usually the best choice for most people, but not for a minority of people with special needs.
2) Badmouthing any operating system when it won't negatively affect you is juvenile. - ISVDamocles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Crap, digg ate my backslashes! the sed command is supposed to have a backslash behind the 1's. Like this: \1
ls *.jpg | sed 's/^\(.*\).jpg$/convert \1.jpg \1.png/g' | bash - cyfer2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can run X window programs in OS X but I can not run cocoa based program on Linux. That's my reason.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4> It trys to be like windows and fails.
Beyond the humor of your grammar, comments like this show how young and lacking in perspective you must be. When people accuse Macs of trying to be like Windows, it's clear that they're missing a large chunk of the history of the companies involved.
Believe me, the long and glorious tales of these operating systems shows Windows trying to be like the Mac. That's the whole reason Windows exists. Bill Gates wanted the Mac OS on PCs. And that's what they created. Well... sort of. - adc86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ISVDamocles
I think it's literally two (drag and drop) actions in Automator to convert image types... Just sayin' - OS X is powerful and easy. - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Logic Pro 7 isn't available on Linux o Windows. Sorry.

- Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I guess maybe it's news that he was still using windows up to this point. I would have thought he'd switched in the 90s.

someone needs a dictionary!
not liking a browser has nothing to do with a user switching platforms! - gregfadein, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Wow. I think this is the first time flag564 ever got dug up!
- nandabanaotakun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why do Mac users supposedly diss Netscape? Back when it was Netscape vs. IE on Mac OS, I used Netscape.
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Mac users, especially old time Mac users have a special sympathy for Netscape browser since it was the only great working browser which supports standards (of that time) and which was supported on every commercial site.
I have actually used IE for Mac, on 68030 laptop and it was wating like 20 secs to render page while Netscape showed it instantly (as far as modem allows). MS was also trying to push Windows charsets to Mac users that time which has nothing to do with the ISO or UTF.
If Netscape didn't exist, MS was already happy to torture Mac users for using a "dead" OS/Platform. Thanks to the OS (classic was NOT that bad), Netscape never had "slow launch" etc problems too.

- maddendude, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4exactly, mac sucks. nothing mac does is at all revolutionary. that whole "my OS gets out of my way when i work" is such *****. Its so generic and broad, that statement means nothing at all. Ive used XP for so long, ive done plenty of video editing, essays, power point presentations, audio editing, photoshopping, it mightve crashed a few times, but the good far outweighs the bad, and thats the problem with the mac users, they dont look at the good in windows. they only hate windows cuz its a fad. I guess they want to be like Justin Long, he's their idol.
- clackerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4you would think steve jobs walked into maddendude's house and personally kicked over his laundry baskets...
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oh i think maddendude spends most of his time playing games. he seems like the type...you know, no life and full of crap.
- glev2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont think a Mac user hates windows to be cool...You know all those themes on TV shows where a good guy has a smart idea, and the bad guy steals it and profits from that idea, and you get all angry and hate that dishonest cheatin' bad guy?
How about people who interfere with your computing experience, preventing it from being the best it could be, so that their company can make more money for its shareholders? Instead of making their software better, they try to spread FUD about other better products, or steal them..
GO READ THE HALLOWEEN DOCUMENTS, GET EDUCATED.....

- rabidstrikes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0jamie zawinsky quit linux a while ago.. however mac sucks
- Darcy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I know theirs a worldwide shortage of Mac users, but do we really need a front page story for everyone that decides to start using one?
I wonder if Apple are paying people to write these "I've switched to the Mac, because Windows sux" stories. It's a great way to keep the fanboys happy. - steve_s, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2In the end every os, mac or windows, is inferior to linux. Gnome or KDE its all better than macdows.
- gregfadein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's right. Every OS—even Linux—is inferior to Linux. Actually, especially Linux.
- adc86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Eh, not really. KDE especially is very similar to XP... And why Ubuntu decided to copy those damned popup bubbles from Winders I will never understand.
- chrispat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1What? Nothing about stealing code from a federally funded project then building a company to sell the software. yeah Marc is a real hero.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2HaHa, you mac users have the netscape guy now...he's gotta bring down the overall Mac cool quotient....
- MWeather, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Who cares?
- nofrak1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Well, I guess the people who get their asses kicked by Microsoft have to stick together.
I don't even like MS particularly, but I like these "OMGWTFBBQ THIS DOOD SWITCHED TO MAC LOL!!!!11!" articles even less. - Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4if i switch do I have to get baptized by Steve Jobs?
- Fatality, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Misread the title as "Netscape ditches Windows for the Mac"...
- nephilimx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Why the digg storys with misleading subheadings? "finally said good bye to the Windows life, and switched to a Mac."
The artical linked to, juts says he bought a apple notebook... nothing about getting rid of windows for life, his personal PC could still be windows - volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I dono if this is his doing or not but the new Netscape interface is really ***** just like the Mac's forced feeling the interface gives off.
I love linux but I mostly use Windows, but I would never give up XP for OSX even if the transition was seemless and all my applications worked
perfectly. - mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think the fact that everytime someone decides to switch from Windows to OS X its deemed to be newsworthy by the Apple community is downright ***** sad.
- Me1000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it is the people who bitch about seeing these posts that fuel the posts!
half if not more of the comments here are people who say they dont care, yet they take the time to post??
- Me1000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it is the people who bitch about seeing these posts that fuel the posts!
- spunquik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1in other news,
man switches from metal trash can to rubbermaid trash can. - turgiddahlia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Please. Please. No more of these. Dear god please no more.
"X prefers Y over Z! News at 11!"
There's a point up to which "Mac is better than PC!" articles are newsworthy, and beyond that point is what I like to call "dressed-up advertising". We passed the point of newsworthiness about fifty identical posts back. And here I was thinking Digg was one of the last websites not completely saturated in advertising.
Give it a rest, Mac fanboys. Seriously. You're boring.
