- Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -9/+64I'm kind of surprised that he's JUST NOW moving to an alternative OS platform.
After all, the vision of Netscape was to create an OS-independent platform with the web browser, as well as embracing Java.
BTW, Andressen became a multi-millionaire in his 20's... I'll take that kind of failure ALL DAY LONG! - Me1000, on 10/12/2007, -10/+48I wouldnt say he failed,
Netscape used to be a VERY popular browser,
its kind of like saying the founder FireFox is a failure, because its not shipped with Winders... - JoeCabot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41Winders is my favorite operating system. It is much better than OS-Z and Lonex.
- 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -19/+487of7, you've got a bit of Microsoft spooge on your lip... A bit more to the left... Your left... There ya go -- you got it.
P.S. Sorry folks, I thought I replied directly but I guess it didn't take. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32It used to be THE browser. You know, when he founded it. Oh, and you know Firefox? Where did that come from?
- swoosh_bnd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Does anyone use Netscape anymore?
- JoeCabot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21No the OS created by Lonex Tornado.
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20i prefer threeBDS
- Me1000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21I used Windows 1.0 in school and it sucked!
Since I havn't used it since im just going to guess it is exactly the same!
*rolls eyes*
Im sorry your so misguided! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22That is amazing! Does anyone know what type of shoes he wears? 'Cause I'm such a big freaken nerd, that I actually care....!
This ain't news! Stop posting crap like this in here you god damn freaken fan boys! - hotdamn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Good god, is that post even real?
- Eallan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17How is this news?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+30Must we hear about everyone who switches? This is just fanboy ego stroking.
- brutalentropy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19If Marc Andreessen is a failure at life, what exactly does that make you?
- attention, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22except, netscape isnt even supported on mac os X anymore
- Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18I can't wait who is going to be next.
*Clutches powerbook in anticipation* - ISVDamocles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I really can't believe you exist. A Linux fanboy who prefers Windows to MacOS X and doesn't know anything about computing history or how computers work, apparently.
Not trying to sound elitist, but as Linux becomes easier to use, we're going to see more and more of this.
1) MacOS came first, not Windows.
2) I've never used iTunes since I don't have an iPod, but I've used Linux iTunes clones (Rhythmbox, Banshee) and from a UI perspective I see nothing wrong. Perhaps the iTunes implementation is buggy, but I doubt it.
3) You're referring to a shareware app, not the operating system itself. You do realize that since most Windows apps require root access, they can hose not just your data, but your entire system, right?
4) Traditionally, most people who use Macs are graphics artists, because Apple guaranteed that one pixel on the screen would be a precise size, and that the color balance of the display would be designed for printers of the time. These people would occasionally convince others as well, mostly because of Apple's strict adherence to interfacing standards they published.
These elements have suffered somewhat recently because of web graphics which need to be designed for the most users out there (Windows users), so Mac displays have lost their color balancing for printers (not that much of an issue, since ICC profiles for printers can adapt the output data to look "right", but it reduces the color range available somewhat).
5) Linux is great, especially compared to Windows, but its primary advantages compared to the OSes out there require the end user to understand how computers *really* work, even today.
For instance, you need to convert a huge number of images from one format to another? Most users would open them up in Photoshop/GIMP/Krita/whatever and grudgingly convert one file at a time. An advanced Windows or MacOS X user would write a C++/Perl/whatever program to automate the conversion process with GIMP.
A Linux user would type:
ls *.jpg | sed 's/^(.*).jpg$/convert 1.jpg 1.png/g' | bash
into the command prompt, wait a few seconds and be done.
Basically, learn what this great tool called a computer can do, and you'll see why:
1) An open operating system is usually the best choice for most people, but not for a minority of people with special needs.
2) Badmouthing any operating system when it won't negatively affect you is juvenile. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18You don't even know what you're talking about.
I'm going to assume you're a troll and block you, but if you're not you should look up your claims.
The program you're talking about deletes its folder, and only its folder. Nothing else.
I use a mac because it's got a powerful OS that gets out of my way when I need to use it. And I have a desktop with Vista on it. Vista copied more or less everything OS X had and slapped it with a trout. It looks pretty, like my Mac does, but when I go to do something on my PC, Vista stands in my way and won't let me get any work done.
You seem to be confused about what came first, the chicken or the Chicken McNugget, and that makes me feel a little bit sorry for you. - Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Wow, I didn't even realize that Netscape still produced a standalone browser -- Why do they bother? Is it just a simple reskin of the Mozilla SeaMonkey browser? I thought Netscape had abandoned the browser market altogether to focus on becoming a portal site.
I stopped installing Netscape on Macs YEARS ago (like, around the time OS X was released with Safari and Mail!) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+237of7, did your family get raped by a Macintosh or something. Every one of your posts are always pro Microsoft, anti-apple.
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18I browse the apple section for news about apples. All this macintosh filth just gets in the way.
- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10A compsci professor of mine uses Netscape exclusively.
- Smurffy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11http://www.toothpastefordinner.com/012007/crapline-news.gif
- andrewa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12"Winders" - Love it! I expect to see this in many more Digg comments...
- digggo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14oh man... i don't care what he uses.
- ISVDamocles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Crap, digg ate my backslashes! the sed command is supposed to have a backslash behind the 1's. Like this: \1
ls *.jpg | sed 's/^\(.*\).jpg$/convert \1.jpg \1.png/g' | bash - V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Arguing about what computer someone else uses is a waste of time. Use what you like!
- Obvioustroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It used to be a very popular browser?
Sonny, back in the day it was the *only* browser. IE was a me-too product. - patience, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14People who diss Netscape now have to praise Netscape founder for owning a Mac.
Apple Fanboys are imploding right now. - Me1000, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11^ he is what you call a troll!
- SystmBetatester, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8how about stop getting all these crappy apple articles on the front page, to be unbiased i havent blocked all the apple stories.
i think i would be more impressed if it was something like 'linus t. switched to macintosh', or 'steve jobs finally admitted using windows' as much as i love firefox and know its a netscape offshoot i really could care less, its just a program - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"IE was a me-too product." - Obvioustroll
It still is... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5' Is it just a simple reskin of the Mozilla SeaMonkey browser? '
No - Netscape 8 is a ***** reskin of firefox. Its really really bad. - Obvioustroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There is still a Netscape browser, but it's not that simple.
First there was Mosaic, which was a student project. Mosaic begat Netscape, which was referred to internally as "Mozilla". Later, the Mozilla Foundation was established to further develop the open source flavors of Netscape. I don't know if any of the old code still exists in the current browsers, but Firefox, Camino, Netscape and others all inherit the Netscape legacy. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13They thrive on being hypocrites.
As long as you give some sort of praise about an Apple device, they dont give a darn if they hated you yesterday. - metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7If we had front page stories for every important person that ever used a windows PC thats all the front page would be.
Wow another person uses a mac. Any day now you guys will get that 3% marketshare you've always wanted. - Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I guess maybe it's news that he was still using windows up to this point. I would have thought he'd switched in the 90s.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oh i think maddendude spends most of his time playing games. he seems like the type...you know, no life and full of crap.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4> It trys to be like windows and fails.
Beyond the humor of your grammar, comments like this show how young and lacking in perspective you must be. When people accuse Macs of trying to be like Windows, it's clear that they're missing a large chunk of the history of the companies involved.
Believe me, the long and glorious tales of these operating systems shows Windows trying to be like the Mac. That's the whole reason Windows exists. Bill Gates wanted the Mac OS on PCs. And that's what they created. Well... sort of. - TheKorn2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8You expect people not to read the front page?
- clackerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4you would think steve jobs walked into maddendude's house and personally kicked over his laundry baskets...
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -13/+17You better be sorry.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It matters because of who he is. If you are old enough to have some perspective on the development and growth of the Internet and the Web over the last decade, you might find this story interesting. 10+ years ago, those doing big things on the Internet (like him) wouldn't have been caught dead with a Mac. It's interesting how things change.
Furthermore, if you don't care, then why are you here in this thread? It's easier to scroll down the page and ignore the story, isn't it? Or does it secretly bother you? - Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4if i switch do I have to get baptized by Steve Jobs?
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Mac users, especially old time Mac users have a special sympathy for Netscape browser since it was the only great working browser which supports standards (of that time) and which was supported on every commercial site.
I have actually used IE for Mac, on 68030 laptop and it was wating like 20 secs to render page while Netscape showed it instantly (as far as modem allows). MS was also trying to push Windows charsets to Mac users that time which has nothing to do with the ISO or UTF.
If Netscape didn't exist, MS was already happy to torture Mac users for using a "dead" OS/Platform. Thanks to the OS (classic was NOT that bad), Netscape never had "slow launch" etc problems too. - Black913Hole, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13doesnt anyone who uses firefox kinda use netscape
- andrewa, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Hey, guess what. I no longer consider OS X as an "alternative" O/S. It does everything I want better than Windows does... I walk through the airport every week and see maybe 60/40 users of Macs (I live in Portland, Oregon). Buh bye, Microsoft!
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6What took him so long? And why was it using the O/S that came from a criminal who killed his 'baby' using illegal tactics?

| One thing we have got to change is our strategy -- allowing Office
| documents to be rendered very well by OTHER PEOPLES BROWSERS is one of the
| most destructive things we could do to the company.
|
| We have to stop putting any effort into this and make sure that Office
| documents very well depends on PROPRIETARY IE capabilities.
|
| Anything else is suicide for our platform. This is a case where Office has
| to to destroy Windows.

http://www.iowaconsumercase.org/011607/2000/PX02991.pdf - arglborps, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I know, Mac has nothing. Just work and productivity, and that's just nothing you can show off to your other 12 year-old friends. Unless you are a creative person and actually DO something cool and productive with your computer.
But, hey, we can't all be productive, there's got to be some people who use their computers solely for porn and the occasional show-off with AIGLX and beryl on Linux... and before I forget it, there are also creative and productive people on Linux, but they, too, create things and DO and don't brag about their OS... - Me1000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6obviously someone cares otherwise there wouldnt be 330+ diggs in a matter of hours!
