- aizdoc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30seeing the titles...
I thought it's something like the flying windows of the Win95/98-ish screen saver...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Windows
Well, after download and give it a shot. Wow... it's awesomely good-looking. How good if it can preserve the live display of the windows (e.g. motion video continue playing). - rdicker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29You stopped caring so much that you clicked on the comments and posted a response?
- rooskie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20hahaha, I thought this was THE "Flying Windows" screensaver as well. Still dig.
- stevehill, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22How about clicking on the link to the site and watching a demo of it there?
- Decimal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17It's the fully buffered windowing system in OS X that makes stuff like this easy. Ever notice in XP, when you drag a window over another window, you can sometimes see flickering behind the window where it's redrawing itself? That doesn't happen on OS X because the windows don't redraw every time you re-arrange them. The OS has the entire window contents stored as an OpenGL texture. That makes it trivial to grab live images from any number of windows and use them as you see in this screensaver (or in expose, the genie effect, etc).
- Panoctopi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Hmmm, wonder what that means in English... oh right. ;)
- addicted44, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@blackjack75 - I am not really very sure about that. Conside the large number of applications that do really amazing things (and mostly from small developers) on macs. I have never seen anything like those on Windows.
I dont know, but is it easier to make really good looking stuff on macs? Maybe the Quartz api's etc are just easier to use? Can someone more knowledgeable enlighten me on this?
Thanks - Panoctopi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Apparently some unintended irony on my part, if that can even be called irony. Sorry for the confusion. I guess I was so eager to post, and excited that I actually got to a 'story' that hadn't been dugg before that I forgot to self edit... anyways, it's late, but hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.
- aizdoc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Ironically, there is one similar story dugg today.

Anyway, I like your misleading title better... reminds me of the old school days... - MiamiGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Once again something for a mac that I wish a pc user as myself could use. Envy kicks in.
- someguyinajar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I'm pretty sure a hardcore Mac fan would have an aneurysm if he/she saw the flying windows screen saver on a mac.
- Decimal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Actually, it's probably the Quartz overhead that gave OS X the reputation for having a 'slow' UI. 3D-accelerated window buffers actually improve performance greatly. It's really not worth defending XP in that aspect, because it's obsolete technology. Vista's GUI will be fully-buffered and 3D accelerated too.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Plug your powerbook into AC, the slowdown could be due to processor speed reduction as a result of running on battery.
- gidd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@ AppleOSuX (obviously a disinterested and objective guy, and by no means a troll):
Actually, Windows's windows operations seem far more sluggish to me than OS X on my antiquated old iBook G4. At least with OS X, my windows stay drawn, rather than appearing as blank grey rectangles waiting for the OS to get around to redrawing them.
OS X is only slow at refreshing windows if you have an astonishingly old graphics card with no support for Quartz Extreme (eg. an iBook G3), and even then, "Boring Old Quartz" still feels more responsive than XP.
I must admit, it is kinda fun to "paint" my screen by dragging a window around while XP is failing to redraw the background app. - flavius731, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7haha - this guys name is Panique! how fitting...
- StrikerObi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I tried it with a quicktime file on my mac too. It's a real shame it doesn't do video in the windows, but it's still insanely cool and will be my screensaver for quite awhile. It's even cooler than Soundstream.
- rense, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This is cool, the screensavers' transitions are very Frontrow-like (easing in and out). Supports multiple screens. Dugg!
- aizdoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You know, digg community span across the globe... here I'm frm Singapore.
digg on... - NiLeS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"you grab onto the title-bar and start going around in circles filling the screen with grayness"
YES! I thought I was the only person who did that....
:D - blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10There's absolutely nothing that prevents someone to write exactly the same screensaver for windows. Good taste aside, that is.
- Gizmort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have never been that big on screen savers.... Now I am!
- ModernGeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Exactly why I am no longer a Windows user. Sitting there trying to do a simple task, only to have a program lock up the os, and you grab onto the title-bar and start going around in circles filling the screen with grayness. The Macintosh platform isn't perfect, but it way far ahead of the competition IMHO.
- Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7There is no truthiness in that statement.
- Matrixsjd, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10I use to like the flying toasters screen savers lol. Good times :) looks pretty cool, gonna have to try this on my G5, since my Powerbook isn't fast enough.
- h3xley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5runs fine on my 1Ghz 12" powerbook
- Panoctopi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ aizdoc
Ooops, that didn't show up on my url search when I submitted... oh well.. Glad you like the 'misleading' title. I think that was compliment ;)
I shall break into the front page, one day, and then I shall be rich :)
Probably not by submitting this late on a Saturday night huh?!?
Digg on... - Doogie125, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I especially like the touch where coming out of "screen saver" mode the windows all smoothly slide back to their original positions. This is a really slick little piece of software!
- Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Really cool eye candy
Fails at being a screensaver
Two major things are required of screensavers
1. Must not burn in screen - all pixels must change at some time - even if it just blanks it for a moment (PASS)
2. Must not show what was previously on the screen now that the user is gone, for privacy reasons (FAIL) - mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5wow... looks great.
i totally love iCandy apps like this. :) - drwtsn32, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Who uses screen savers any more? My monitors just go to sleep.
- paulmetzger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Because screen savers generally aren't full featured, time saving, productivity boosting, cross platform wonders... they're eye candy.
And WOW, what eye candy this is! However, I do have two complaints: the windows don't continue to update as you'd expect with quartz extreme (ie, movies playing, isight capturing), and it's fairly slow. 30fps on my 1.83 Core Duo iMac (dual head though.. that may have something to do with it).
Still.... WOW! - Dames, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3When you open Photobooth and make it spin around, it freezes it at the last image captured from an iSight. Would be cooler if it continued to capture live video as it moved.
- Fly4Fun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Works very smoothly on my 13" macbook w/ 1gb Ram. I like it!
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2very cool.
just curious, i have a macbook pro and when the screensaver activates it hangs for just a second while rendering. anyone else have that occur? - oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you know what? i bet you're right, i'm running one non-uni app (www.foldershare.com). it's not universal and now that microsoft bought it, i doubt that it ever will be. i bet that's what's causing the small hitch prior to launching though. thanks.
- dexp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2speeding up the velocity fixes this. changed mine to 7 and it looks better
- jeriqo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Quartz Composer doesn't support anti aliasing (yet?)
- jeriqo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yet, it is called "Fenetres Volantes".
Do you also translate Bonjour and Expose ?
(accents don't seem to work) - oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21gig .. that should be enough, or no ??
- nathanmock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mirrored direct download:
http://www.aberrant.us/mirror/files/fenetresvolantes.zip - ModernGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How much ram you got?
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9First thing I thought too, but then said, no way, who would want that on their Mac.
- paulisnotdead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I found my new screensaver!
- jordan314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I have to think they used part of the Frontrow APi for this.
Very cool, it would be neat if you could 'catch' a window and bring it to the front as a GUI, like a game-like expose. - Matrixsjd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have the first 12 inch that was released, it's 867 MHz, says that you should have at least a GHz. Works great on my G5, think I'll try it on my Powerbook anyway.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1[posting error]
- DouglasScott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you right click it and go to "Show package contents" you can get to it's resources, which contain a quartz composer file. Opening it Quartz Composer you can see how the whole thing works. It's all graphics, no communications stuff.
There's another file called "Fenetres Volantes" that is a Unix executable, and it is ScreenSaver engine stuff.
If it's malware, they are doing it in less than 10k of space. - stewacide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I believe this is a "bug" with the program. Possibly a limitation of the APIs it's using. Hopefully it'll be addressed: anti-aliasing would make this a whole lot better looking.
- nobogeys217, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I opened ll of the apps on my widget bar and tested the screensaver. It looks awesome with a bunch of windows flying around. Good job Panoctopi
