- PhantomBantam, on 10/12/2007, -27/+101* OFFTOPIC *
I apologize, but I have to rant just a bit. The comment system is broken. Two spammers just posted ASCII art of another story, and are being dugg up! Perhaps if I post goatse, I'll get a couple hundred diggs! I'm thinking digg is going to start seeing a huge loss of users who will go back to Slashdot, not because the crowd is more mature, but because the immature are silenced, and not rewarded. - ReallyChili, on 10/12/2007, -12/+79"before he put the dollar ahead of the experience"
Way to spin it, fanboy. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+71@PhantomBantam
I don't think you realize this but the demographic of Digg is from ages 12 to retarded.
What do you expect, 90% of the users on this site are prepubescent boys. - EndofEternity, on 10/12/2007, -8/+55Where but Digg, can you find such mindless Apple fanboy crap.
1984, was completely different era. Which platform was the best has no impact on today's OSs - beelz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+39Terrorists attacking digg now!
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -9/+40Because the Apple section is no longer really about Apple but for lemmings to push anti-MS rubbish (See the description).
- theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Microsoft wrote apples software back then... look it up and stop acting like this is a big deal.
- mouraless311, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28I'm not trying to be a jackass with this question but why does Digg have a bias towards apple?
- edoo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26All the negativity towards Gates is kind of sad seeing as he is the greatest philanthropist the world has ever seen. And Jobs is...not.
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23I would be more inclined to say "back when the Mac was the only computer with a GUI".
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22you haven't been here long, have you?
- senfo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Who let the RIAA in?
- alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22I think this is supposed to make Bill Gates seem hypocritical, but it doesn't. It would be if Bill Gates insulted Apple today, but he doesn't. In fact, he doesn't say much about them...
- peestandingup, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Im all about Apple, but this video isnt exactly explained & is always taken outta context.
This is actually from 1983, just a few months before Macintosh launched. It was at an Apple event & they were doing a Dating Game spoof where the Macintosh was the main attraction & there were 3 "contestants" (developers) on stage talking about it & Bill Gates was one of them. It was totally scripted, every word of it. Macintosh was never shown until January 1984.
Actually, here is a video from the same event where Steve Jobs intros the famous "1984" ad, uploaded by yours truly :-)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSiQA6KKyJo - Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Because he's talking about Macs in the video.
- slowspun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12True. Now that it is finally 1997, everything has changed.
- edoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Once again...
I take exception to the statement:
"before he put the dollar ahead of the experience"
You may be right about percentages of salaries, but "percentages" don't save live, dollars do, and it is a FACT that he has donated more DOLLARS than anyone else and saved more LIVES through his foundation than anyone else. The negativity towards him isn't deserved. - edoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13In the context of the post:
"before he put the dollar ahead of the experience"
Gates has given away more money than any individual in the history of the world and saved more lives in third world nations than any other person in history. The poster may not realize this. - dignation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9i've gotta digg up, for the pure randomness

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+22I hate Apple.
- Lazybones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@AnonymousFreak
They provided a version of BASIC for the first Apple computers. Microsoft has nearly always had some form of software on the Apple platform. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17tenebrous wins the argument.

- Figs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I find it slightly disturbing that I look like he used to O.o
Does that mean I'll look like he does now in 23 years? Good grief!

To name the obvious points. (There are others, but I don't think I can explain it very well in words.) - se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5█▓▒STOP

Responsible to his thousands of employees and their families, their retirements, their dreams to pay for their children's education. Responsible to to nearly all Americans that own a retirement fund that likely contains MSFT. Responsible to the thousands that benefit from his charity work. But you're right. Clearly Bill Gates should say ***** it and start a nano-robot factory or something else more wild or cutting edge or that contains more 'experience', whatever that means. If I were him I would screw everyone that ever helped me or that depended on me. Seriously, what is it that you want from people? How do you propose the world should work if we were to discard American capitalism and replace it with something more fun or neat-o or that generates more 'experience'? How should we decide who is doing things too much for the money? Which values should people be forced to strive for in your world? What should the punishments be? I am fascinated.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hey, I agree with Gatesophile, she even stole my damn comment.
And I'm a major Linux fan. Doesn't stop me from thinking Bill was cute back in the day. :) - theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I do get a laugh out of the way you've been getting dugg down for actually shining a little truth on the matter. I really think the digg community needs to get their priorities straight.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4....And he was developing Mac software exclusively...

Swing and a miss. - Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You mean Kevin Rose has an Apple bias? Because I think people might be digging you down for thinking that you said Kevin hates Apple (that's what I first thought when I read your comment.)
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42007 - 1984 ≠ 13
- ryguy314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He kind of sounds like Kermit the Frog from Sesame Street.
- rholloway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Bottom line--in the face of competition, Gates had the better business vision. He knew it was cheaper to and more efficient to build software for companies making hardware (especially a giant like IBM) than it was to be a hardware startup who also wrote software.
Before he quit the first time, Jobs was crushed by IBM, by way of Microsoft. It was too much to compete with. So, when he returned he knew he had to employ the concept of planned obselescence to survive. He knew he had the same small fanbase and the only way to make any money was to design hardware that needed frequent replacement to stay current. All of his sales were to the same people. Look at the iPod--if you started with iPod, you've little choice but to stay with iPod--and you'll be replacing that every two years, mind you.
In my opinion, the sneakier of the two is Jobs. He sells betas, abuses his most loyal, and keeps his fanbase constantly feeding him money. - consonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nothing like a little spin to inflame rational people.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3People having a lot invested in you because you're rich doesn't make you reputable, responsible and kind, any more than giving money to charity will suddenly turn you into a trustworthy business partner in other people's eyes after years of misbehaviour.
The mafia learned both of these lessons a long time ago. People forget, I guess. - Vokas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6My Windows experience is just fine.
- nandabanaotakun, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6That isn't how it happened.
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Back then, he was trying to sweeten up to Apple. He knew exactly what he was doing.
Now, both parties know each other's agenda, so Bill has no need to sweeten thing anymore, and he can attack (or whatever) all he wants. - Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wouldn't call it a documentary.. more like a docudrama. The truth was stretched in some parts, but the main story is the same.
- Unrefined, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He sounds like Kermit the Frog in that video...
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Thanks. :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BJu2GAkf2k - BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Giving to charity is something from the man's personal life that is indisputably a Good Thing, but it doesn't really affect the fact that he's got a reputation for being terribly unscrupulous and even a law-breaker in business - I know, it's sad, but there you go.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg has a higher incidence of programmers, geeks, web developers, technicians, hobbyists, and people who work with a computer (like graphic designers) than the general population.
Amongst these people, use of things like OS X, BSD and Linux by an individual, can generally be seen as more likely than in the general population - and sites like digg and slashdot would appear on the face of it to reflect that.
Of course, there are an awful lot of trolls as well - whilst most of us commenting in this section are interested in the article or in alternative/unix-based OSes, estvir for instance, who hates Apple, and doesn't seem to have any interest in the company, its hardware, its software or the people involved, has come here just to make smart comments about how stupid Apple and its users are, it seems.
There are some *terrible* Apple fans, but you'll find a lot of it is kickback against people like that coming in the other direction. -
