-olly - cwncool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, it was close.
- manoftheisland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that is freaking awesome... if Apple comes out with that i'll have to break the piggy bank open... they only thing would be the repetitiveness of my finger doing circles on the screen.
digg digg digg - dogoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2THATS AWESOME!
i really hope that they come out like that
thats really awesome - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2has anyone addressed the issue of fingerprints? I mean, come on
- ollywompus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Conceptually, this looks good. Practically speaking, it'll never work. Why?
1) Not enough battery life.
2) Huge potential for screen scratching/smudging.
3) Too expensive to make."
1.) This I DO agree with you on completely... whats the use of a DAP that dies on you after a couple of hours? I spend 3 hours of my day on the train, this thing probably wouldn't survive even that.
2.) No different than a PDA, and with the right coating, wouldn't be that big of deal on the fingerprint issue.
3.) take a lifedrive, apple-ify it, change the interface, and there you go. It wouldn't cost apple anymore to manufacture this badboy than it did Palm.
-olly - loeakaodas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I though of something like this before, but lack the skills to make it into anything more then an idea XD
If they make something like this that would have a customizable interface, support more file formats, and play more video codecs, as well as have a digital camera/camcorder and cell phone built it I would certainly buy it, but now I own an X5L. - smellytim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats sweet as hell
- WDot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg. I know this is just a simple mockup, but this would defnitely be a better Video Ipod than the current one. In fact, I wouldn't mind having a Nano for music and then something like this for movies. Now we just need to get those $2.99 full-length movies on Itunes. ;)
- prcpaul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is what I wanted from the get go.
I know Apple rushed out something with video, but I would never invest in a 4:3 screen. Let's hope this is real. - oneSaint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good call back then.... but look at the iPhone.. :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1would be ***** awesome, but the fingerprints problem, how to bypass that? maybe another flash screen on the bottom just for navigation?
- CarlosReyes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what if your left-handed, it would be nice if you could switch the wheel and the menu for greater ease, as for fingerprints, my palm's screen never gets fingerprinted, and i never use the stylus. the material, what i DO hope is that it isint as scratchtastic as the 5G one
- BaldMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And how is the clickwheel supposed to function? There was a reason why the 3G iPod had the four buttons above the wheel. That is still my favourite scrollwheel, I miss my 3G.
- themuffinman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Let's hope this is real."
Its a mockup. It is not real. It is a 3d render made by a talented artist, but it is not real.
Still very cool. I'd buy one. - sgtunix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's amusing but it's not very practical. When holding it and viewing a movie, where would your thumbs go?
- hellsyeah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why would a click wheel be necessary on a touch screen? While it looks cool it doesn't make physical sense, you could just use a scroll bar to roll through the songs and touch them to play. The only reason to use that interface would be for nostalgia. Also it couldn't be an actual "click" wheel in this particular design.(it wouldn't click)
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perfect for front row and clearly made for video, I'd buy it.
- gabeN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"This is what I wanted from the get go.

Agreed - lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg solely for the Oldboy scene.
- FunkyChicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg, Digg, Digg, Digg, Digg........
- whizzbang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple's Roadmap?
1. Touch screen Video iPod
2. Video iPod with Wifi for buying form iTune direct
3. Mac Mini upgraded to be a media center using Front row as the interface
4. Control Mac Mini Media Center with iPod as touch Screen remote (Over wifi)
5. Include iPod cradle in top of mini to charge it and synch it with your video library.
6. Own home entertainment.
Any takers? - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nobody's yet mentioned that all of these "rumored" improvements have been based off of the 4th Gen iPod; the 4th gen had beveled corners on both the front and the back, whereas the 5th has had a flat top from the very beginning.
What does that mean? Well, the most important thing that it means is that the screen area on this mockup is significantly diminished from the possible screen area. - VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cool stuff.. good job
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Erm, it's a slightly fancier roll over effect.. No huge inovation, it's a rip of the other fullscreen ipod thing on the frontpage not long ago..
It's just an existing iPod, with a video layed over, with a shiney UI when you hover o/
But it's still looks not too bad..
- Ben - SmartITGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, I HATE Apple, as much as I hate Microsoft, SCO and Sony...
BUT - this does look like a cool toy. ...I'll just wait until you can buy
them refurbished for half the price at some clearance outlet.
(like www.factorydirect.ca)
One thing I am concerned about though, they tend to make display lenses out of plastic. after many months of using the on-screen controls, the display lens would eventually have noticeable wear/scratches. - grump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the speculation on the video iPod's design is fun and all, but i'd rather they spend the R&D on figuring out a way to load load movies onto the iPod in seconds rather than hours.
- FelixdaaHack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why is it that only Apple can come out with a product like this? I bet OQO would make a better one. Also, this product platform is nothing new...I watch 16x9 videos on my Pocket PC all the time.
- ThugEsquire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Well for one thing it wouldn't be an ipod if it didn't have the wheel. And besides that I honestly prefer the feel of spinning a wheel for scrolling than dragging a scroll bar. For those that would say I'm insane, do you have a scroll wheel on your mouse? If yes how often do you drag the scroll bar as opposed to using the wheel? I mean sure you probabbly drag the scroll bar occaisionally. But it's much more rare. For some reason the wheel just seems more natural."
They've changed the wheel so much, a new iPod could look like anything. If it ends up looking anything like the player that EVERYONE speculates it to be, I'll be surprised. Apple doesn't do that. Apple surprises people. Additionally, I don't know how far you got through grade school, but a regular scroll wheel on a mouse is moved VERTICALLY, not circularly as on the iPod. Your analogy is thus totally whack, and probably cracked out. If a mouse came with a wheel like the iPod's wheel, it wouldn't be NEARLY as intuitive. Apple's Mighty Mouse doesn't even work that way--scrolling down still requires a downward action, rather than a circular one. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everyone is thinking too big here. The new ipod will have a bigger screen yes but instead of a digital click wheel, the wheel will be a remote, connected to the ipod ear-buds like the FM receiver.
- aerialonyx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@voide "Where are the infamous iPod controls? On the back?"
No, on the front when you mouseover. Mmm. - pencilneck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not withstanding that ipods are overated to begin with... whoever came up with that little design knows nothing of the issues that come up with touch screens. Finger prints are the least of your worries since they will wipe right off with a micro cloth. But running your finger in a circle in the same area over and over will etch a nice ring into the screen that won't wipe off and may not polish out.
Touch screens are just a bad idea... if there is going to be a repeated action, use a button, no one will care much if the silver paint wears off a plastic button... but a nice etched doughnut on the pretty screen..... - wrinkles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can see a market for stylish index (no-scratch) fingertip "condoms". I know there's a better name for that, but I can't think of it now.
- thelastknowngod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i honestly would never buy something like that. finger prints, wear on the screen, no physical buttons (how about when driving people?)... i think they are trying to get too fancy and too different. they have to keep it simple. thats the hole reason the ipod is so popular. the more stuff they try and cram into it will remove functionaliy not increase it. apple would be "AOLing" it up. i dont want to see it. id rather see a new newton. and i dont like pdas.
- Agent_M, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There are just so many potential problems with that design, I'm sure Apple won't go with something that fancy.
digg for Oldboy too. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My idea of how to avoid the fingerprint issue:
http://permission3000.com/vpod.html - McZiggz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0grump - "the speculation on the video iPod's design is fun and all, but i'd rather they spend the R&D on figuring out a way to load load movies onto the iPod in seconds rather than hours."
Loading movies (dvds) requires cracking security features which doesn't excite the MPRA, also ur biggest limitation is processor speed. It takes half as long on my iMac G5 2.0 as it does on my powerbook G4 1.33 - so get a quad and u can cut ur time in 1/4. The video has to be decrypted, read, converted and saved, all the while keeping synch w/ your audio... not an easy task for a CPU.
- get used to the wait :-) - hollywoodone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Digg for good ps skills.
- playbombcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is SWEET.
is Old Boy starring Stephen Chow?? I love Stephen Chow. - diafel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One, the fingerprint problem is just too great in daylight. Also how can you pause it in your pocket?
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK, that's sexy. but not having any "grip space" makes it kind of hard to hold on to and watch.
The PSP has the perfect screen size but the only thing holding it back as a media player.
It poor battery life and not one, not two, but three proprietary technologies. UMD disks. PSP Video and Sony memory stick.
Even with the flaws that mockup of the Ipod gen6 I would buy one. It kool. - Pollack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is just the product an organised disinformation campaign. Probably from some PR company. The aim is to cause commercial damage to Apple. The target audience is the muppets who believed in the Google PC and the Google operating system.
- grump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mcziggz- you're right, those are the current limitations. i'm merely stating that R&D should be spent making the iPod more usable, not just prettier.
- mynameiswerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ugly.

- jamescarlos, on 12/02/2008, -0/+0if they go through with the concept...i'd like to see that blurry technique used in front row!
- MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"All I have to say is: Fingerprints"
You don't see fingerprints when the screen is lit up, only when it's black, so it's not a problem. -
