- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+59Where is the linux support for 9!?!?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+40Breaking news: ADOBE HATES BLA-- LINUX USERS
- sagarp, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35a program like flash 9 not being available on linux isnt a fault of LINUX, it's a problem with ADOBE. people like the developers of gnash are working on building a better solution for linux users, and they're doing it from the ground up with no support from adobe. if a handful of people developing in their spare time can do it, why can't adobe employees? windows is great and stuff "just works" in it -- again not because of windows, but because of the software developers who develop FOR windows. linux users are adobe customers too, and an undelivered promise shouldn't be kicked aside because we use an OS that's supposedly not "convenient" and "simple" enough.
- iKevin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31We want Flash 9 for linux :(
- fatlip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27where is the linux support for... 8?!
- StringCheesian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21The blog of one of the Adobe devs working on Flash 9 for Linux right now:
http://blogs.adobe.com/penguin.swf/ - threethirty, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16for flash in Linux try Gnash. It's a GNU flash built with out any code from Adobe. They built it if from reverse engineering from the .swf file.
- flakmonk3h, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18dan,
you're grandma can use linux :)
what does she need that linux doesn't have?
if she never used IE, then she wont have problems using firefox.
if she never used outlook, then she won't have problems using thunderbird.
what else would a grandma want from a computer? - kettlechips, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12... or a reason to WINE
- sillygates, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11gnash works for some stuff, but in my expierence it didnt work for many sites, including google video
- junaru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7And where did capitalism get you?
*cough*patents for double click*cough* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15"not so universal....im still stuck runing the 32 bit version of firefox, and flash 7.0 shame on adobe for slow linux development :(."
Don't run Linux then, it's obviously not the right OS for you. The vast majority of all software on the market doesn't exist for Linux or simply is slower to market for Linux because of it's nearly irrelevant market share. Accept that and stop complaining.
Linux is for certain people, and people that lack patience need not apply. - sillygates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6well...GPL pdf viewers were already as good as acrobat reader by the time they did that. trying to keep people loyal to Adobe is not the same as supporting an OS.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6 fatlip they already said they won't be releasing 8 on linux and just jumping straight to 9 but they've ***** that up too. Where is flash on linux!?
- oblivinated, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6My grandma wants to be able to walk into a store, like Target, purchase Hoyle Card Games, put it into her CD drive, click "next" 4 times, and be able to play 10 different card games. Which she does currently.
- pauleric, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Ya well, how hard is it to put in the word 'beta'? That's a problem with digg, I get dugg down for being correct. Not that I care about that per se, but it does make this website less valuable to me when I know that things get evaluated by a bunch of fanboys instead of people trying to be objective.
- spikes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Thats a very stupid argument, most grandmas don't even know how to use Windows either. You'd be surprised just how many people come to me to ask how the heck do they burn a cd in Windows.
- joesnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i honestly can't fathom how you can "hate" an OS that you don't even use, like some people here...or.. they "have it installed on 1 box"... I mean seriously USE. So much hate for the Linux community doesn't make the windows community look any better than the words used to bash the other.
I dislike windows, but I've used it and fixed MS OS's since DOS 5.1, and if a piece of software were delayed for windows but not for linux, i'd bitch just as much as vice verca, because it's ridiculous to be contradictory by promising something, then never coming through on it and just saying "oh next round we'll include you...i mean... next next time... i mean... next next next time..." especially with the resources and prowess that is Adobe, for a simple flash player..given they have all the code, that's just pathetic to some degree, on top of the fact that they most likely have all the former Macromedia devs behind them now as well. - StringCheesian, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Mike Melanson and some other devs at Adobe are working on it:
http://blogs.adobe.com/penguin.swf/ - spikes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7http://blogs.adobe.com/penguin.swf/
I begin to think this guy has no clue whatsoever....
"Quick question: Does anyone know why the bcm5700 network driver, GPL-licensed and available for download from HP, is not included in the Linux kernel? Long story but, wow, it would sure help our development process if it was."
Support for this card has been in the kernel for ages, under the Tigon 3 driver, "tg3".
*sigh* - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Universal" means that it has been compiled for both PPC and Intel CPUs. It has nothing to do with performance or frame rate. ✓
- sillygates, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15not so universal....im still stuck runing the 32 bit version of firefox, and flash 7.0 shame on adobe for slow linux development :(.
- kettlechips, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6He's talking about Mac, you dolt.
- flakmonk3h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4not everybody here lives in america :)
- vitobcn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I wouldn't count on that... people always seem to find a reason to whine
- rjpilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have used windows since it was first released and have tried linux throughout the years of its development. When Ubuntu breezy was released I decided to give linux another try because I was getting sick of removing spyware, running antivirus programs, defraging etc.
After using Ubuntu breezy and now using dapper with the compiz desktop, I realized that its an operating system that is light years ahead of windows. Since I've first installed breezy and now upgraded to dapper I've haven't had a single crash, and forgotten how to reboot. My kids and my wife( yes even my wife) use it without bothering me with a million how do you do this questions. Linus is just intuitive. All I can say is I feel sorry for those window users, you don' t know what your missing! The hell with adobe, lets get an opensource version like gnash going so were not dependent on those fools. - riverfr0zen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4okie. so why don't you tell *him*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4since now. because its something people haven't had ever.
- greggish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When Microsoft stops giving Adobe enough payola to stall flash for linux then they may deveolop it.
- VoidmainCom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just out of curiousity. I submitted this story to digg 24 hours before(http://digg.com/users/VoidmainCom/dugg) this guy and only got 16 diggs? i thought no one cared and then the next day there it is. Anyway, the idea that it takes an extra 24 hours to get a story if the person who submitted isn't already a heavy digg user, kind of sucks. Just my opinion.
- apache2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't take me wrong, it's nice that there is some progress on this, but you would think from a large-scale company such as Adobe that they will actually put out? Seriously, if we were promised flash 9 for linux why can't it be released along side of all the other platforms? I'm sure it can't be that hard. Here we have been stuck with stoneage flash 7 for such a long time that maybe even some of those that have been waiting have passed away from natural causes or accident.
It has been made clear that linux users would enjoy to sink their teeth into some new material and here we still sit as we try to wait for a huge corporation to complete a simple task. Some OSS projects have even been creeping up on successing this development. And I just HAVE to ask, whenever this flash 9 for linux comes out, how much longer until we get 64 bit?
I couldn't be humored more. - Groady, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Does this mean flash performance on a Mac will be on par with PC? ie. Frame rate?
- suldar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Flash Player UNIVERSAL binary released!"
Ouch! I'm a little sleepy but when I read that I thought the poster was saying it was released for Linux.
Anyway, one thing that I think is being overlooked here is that one of the major selling points for developers to use Flash on there sites is that Adobe will take on the burden of making sure visitors can view the content. That's what they are being payed to do. Personally if I spent thousands of dollars or more on Adobe software and found out I was losing visitors because of it I would be irritated. - asaone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I gave up on Macromedia/Adobe coming up with a x86_64 version of flash for windows or Linux. It's a shame, I use a lot of Adobe software in video/DVD production on windows. I have used Linux for years at home now I am starting to use it for work. It is my choice and I will not be upgrading my Adobe software (unless they come up with Linux versions of there software I use). By the way most of the animation for movies these days is made using Linux boxes and software ie the animated movie (Disney/Pixar) CARS. I find it strange that they make movies using Linux but you can not play a DVD on a Linux box legally. Ok rant over.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I can't wait to get my new Mac Mini in to try this out
- sinatosk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6sick of all these people complaining about flash player 9 for linux
I use Linux myself......... ubuntu that is :p
anyways.... It's been said for the past few months now that Adobe Flash Player 9 will be released later this year ( alpha / beta ) and the final version will be released early 2007....... just freaking wait - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4sick. now i wont have to drop the version of my swfs so people on mac can see! finally people can make some real flash websites and not have all the whining!
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That's awesome.
I, too, can't wait to get a Mac Mini so I can try out not being able to run Flash 9. - spikespeigel42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There's GNash, the GNU project to develop a replacement for the Adobe plugin. It uses a clean room approach, and it apparently isnt that good. But two years ago, WINE sucked, and look where it is now.
- node3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like most people who complain about getting dugg down, you didn't get dugg down for the reason you think you did. You're right that it's a beta, and it really should have been put in the title or at least the summary. That was a good point.
You got dugg down because even a beta can be (and in this case, has been) released. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3have fun with that one.
- NGliam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They're working on a Linux Flash Player 9 - http://blogs.adobe.com/penguin.swf/
edit- and I just noticed someone already posted this :D - corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For the person who said that the ABC streaming TV shows don't work anymore, ABC removed them from their site. They say that more will be up this fall when new seasons of their shows begin.
- snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't this digg about flash?
- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I was going to say something but Agilethumbs pretty much sums it up. Kudos to you.
My personal opinion is that you are using a free OS and expecting free support so you probably shouldn't complain =) - riverfr0zen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actually, i've been thinking about doing some flash graphics development. sort of for fun, and for more constructive things. the flash environment is nice, because it offers all these aspects (easily on browsers, similar to ecmca script, etc).
but actually right now, due to this lack of support, i'm deciding, i'm not going with flash. if i really wanted to do cool graphics/gaming stuff, why would i ever use such a restricted format? plus its slow (yes, i know that's unfair). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A PPC browser running with PPC flash, under rosetta is many many times slower than the native version. It has a lot to do with framerate for Macintel users.
- Dan005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any alternate link, this one is slowww
- JudgeDredd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Guy, we all know the limitations of Linux when we decided to go with it. We forfeit standard programs for Win, unless you want to run them at a snail's pace, and you cannot even do that with some apps. I could do without flash all together. Most sites that use flash are Linux friendlly, though (at least in my experience).
At this point in my career, I am comfortable in saying to potential customers if you do not support Linux, I cannot work with you. Yes, I am lucky. Then they ask why and I tell them about it. Then they do a cost-benefit analysis and don't call me again. I don't care. - Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Doesn't work for linux, not universal :-)
