- leodavinci, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7lol, the #1 reason why Apple won't be around for much longer.
"There are plenty of cat names to go around if you count every species of cat. However, Apple can’t just throw any cat name on their OS, it has to be a cool feline capable of taking down substantial sized prey. So, Leopard (obviously) would be in, but OS X Munchkin is straight out. With that in mind, we realize that the pool of useable cat names is dwindling quickly. No cool cat names, no OS revisions. No OS revisions, no reason to go Mac. Unless Steve and company start genetically engineering new cats, the Mac is in serious trouble." - SATURN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Unless Steve and company start genetically engineering new cats, the Mac is in serious trouble"
lmao - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4People have only been predicting this every year for the past 20. (When windows 95 comes out, there will no longer be any reason to own a mac! Remember that one? LOL!)
Frankly, I'd be worried if thety werent making this stupid prediction every year. - moisie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Personally I see them as being a device maker, I think the whole concept of a computer being hardware and and OS will fall by the wayside. Computing devices will integrate with other areas of our lives and become more and more like everyday electronic devices suited to particular functions depending on situation the OS will probably go unseen. Your TV/display will just show a front row-esque interface and you won't see the underpinnings - it won't matter.
- spike5792, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think Macs will be around for a long time to come. Apple as you may know was a company that was in trouble only just a few years ago. Remember the 1997 Keynote? Feels like those days were a long time ago...but they're not. Apple has only just re-birthed and has yet to show its true colours and flap its full wing span in the tech industry. Apple has yet to shake the tech industry...sure they got the iPod and a whole host of other cool hardware, what excites me is what they have planned over the next few years when Apple really start to stretch their strides and continue to dominate every new area they come in to.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Macs are here to stay, what will fuel the creative minds of the future if not Apple's kick-ass software and machines?"
Linux. - dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder if they will skip over the pussy cat....?
- TomFrankFlyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Going along with the "genetically engineered cats" maybe Apple should use "Liger" for their new OS
- dave_colorado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No, "Persian" is still available. They'll be fine on this one ;)
http://www.cfainc.org/breeds/profiles/persian.html - golddigga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes, dude you can ***** this guy if u want to, but i'm not gay
macs are gonna be around in 50 years, i'm gonna have mine - nihilator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed. Apple will always be around, as long as there are style conscious people.
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they do switch to Windows like Dvorak suggests, and they Open Source OSX like Leo Laporte wants, they could call the open source project Feral.
- cctoronto05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1uh yeah, no macs, hehehehe, that's good one... lmao!
i thought this was a serious article... obviously tongue in cheek:
... genetically engineering cats... that's actually almost funny... - dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Naw, at least old sheds are stable. :)
- Salmonax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At the time there barely was a reason, if any at all. Apple was a pre-second-coming-of-Jobs mess at that point.
- alex007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you can't predict next year, why go out to 2010? Who cares?
- Specter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We're bound to find a planet in the universe sometime soon... im sure it will have new species of cat that we can name. and therefore apple will have more names... or they might just switch to a new naming convention. ie. follow intel switching from petium to new stuff
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Aye, until the iMac, there really was no reason to own a Mac other than being used to it.
And a note on the article. This looks distinctly John C Dvorakish :P - tonyf3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Chris Seibold is completely off base. He starts out by defending Windows Vista, and then gets into what the complaints are. The point about Apple has always been: Designing easy to use software that works beautifully with the hardware it's designed to run on right out of the box. The computer Designed for the rest of us. Industrial Design has always been a hallmark of Apple as well. You don't bring ugly boxes into your home or business. They're Cool, and often pieces of Art themselves. So, Apple will be around for quite some time. They innovate, It's the whole package we pay for, Software, Hardware, and the look and feel of their devices.
- jimmyxrax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just one thing to say on this, oh, two ... Windows Media 11 and Hong Kong mid-March. the i-pod dominance will be over sooner than you think.
- acidburn85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only time will tell, I think It will be around longer than that, but nothing lasts forever.
- chrisholland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'm holding out for Mac OS X "Meow".
- chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Macs are here to stay, what will fuel the creative minds of the future if not Apple's kick-ass software and machines?
- RealityCheck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here we go again, Apple's going to die the sky is falling, how many times have I heard this in the last almost 30 years? Mac OS X bad Windows Good, now the Mac won't be here in 4 years. Please can't you come up with a prediction like most astrologers? Vista isn't even here yet and every pundit is predicting that it's going to Kill the Mac. Market share is sinking HELP. How many computers are sold today as compared to 5 or 6 years ago? Market Share has always meant nothing. Wise up, Apple will be here, Sun will be here and Linux will be here. Much to the consternation of every pundit and Microsoft...
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Who on earth actually thinks Apple is a software company? When was the last time Steve jobs talked about a new software product without repeatedly mentioning how well it runs on the new [insert new computer being released here]? He is all about the hardware, the software is just there to drive the hardware, and they make their money off of the hardware sales. They make excellent software but they give you almost all of it for free when you buy a system. Why? Because they make money off the hardware sales. Apple will never stop making hardware until the day they disappear. Besides, look at the new HiFi speaker box thing. That is just the first step to taking over the living room. Upcoming Plasma Display TV anyone?
- bowloforanges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*****. ***** this guy. Its mac that will change the world. bitch
- jamesbedellld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The critical flaw in the analysis is that Apple wants to simple grow for growth's sake. The idea that simply more market share is the key to success is what has kept Apple at the leading edge, while Microsoft lumbers trying to keep up with everything from hardware innovation to the latest hack. I doubt Apple will ever a majority of market share, but then that's not the point.
Vista will do exactly what all Windows updates do. Quell any rumors about a Mac uprising and give Microsoft back it's dominance. Meanwhile, I'll be editing my latest set of RAW files-crash free. - Monkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Macs are here to stay. I don't see them going away any time soon. They're riding the iPod wave and they're going to do it with the rest of the tech industry. You just all watch.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dvorak suggested that Apple is gonna ditch OS X for Windows. Now ApppleMatters.com is suggesting the same thing? Arghh...
- chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Oh, and this guy is a serious Hater. ***** him.
