- zatch5412, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Is it just me, or does the recipe the screenshot shows not actually the recipe for Key Lime Pie? I have a hard time thinking pizza crust, mozzarella cheese, and garlic are essential ingredients to a tasty dessert. Sounds more like pizza... but I'm not chef.
- Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15To Serve Man... It's a cookbook!!!!
- j0c1f3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11anicejew is being dugg down because he is an ass alot of the time so we just dont like him anymore....even if he makes a nice comment now......guess he shoulda started his time out on digg by not being an asshat.
- bewareofcabbage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Have you been following the development of this app? If you had then you'd know they also plan(ned) a full-screen mode with apple remote and/or voice command capability, so you wouldn't have to touch the Mac.
Anyway - how do you propose they fit a lengthy recipe on-screen big enough to be readable without some degree of scrolling?! - MasterDirk, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16They had such potential, and now they're making a cookbook. Sheesh!
- fremeer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8actually a successful cookbook app with a p2p nature would be awesome. Add in a peer reviewed digg style affect and the ability to add notations(but never change) a recipe by people with high enough extras would be awesome.
Imagine if want to make spaghetti bolognaise, just search for it and a bunch of options come up, each part has its own review, ease to make, level of ingrediants, cost and taste or something. U can specify which one is more important. Add in basic help functions for common terms and conversions. Add in a irc style system for different styles for extra help. If u want to make something, just pick from a certain criteria or search for a keyword and pick from the list. Or have a random recipe where it picks out a high rated recipe from random. Make it run on a server or bittorrent style so its just a matter of having a correct app and not limiting it to one platform. Its also a viable way to make money if it gets popular, ask amazon or something to allow one or two recipe's from a cookbook to be hosted and just have a if u like this why not buy the book and try all the great recipes crap. - HalBSure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Maybe it's supposed to be Key Lime Pizza.
- CaptainMordecai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I believe the point of the competition was for ideas for an application that could take advantage of the features of mac os x and in particular new features that will be available in OS X 10.5. It was always going to be a mac application when all the developers were known mac shareware developers.
All i can say is sorry if you don't have a mac and would like this application. Maybe someone will write something just as cool for your platform? Or you could it a go if you can program and are inclined to do so. - ProximaC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How to Cook For Forty Humans.
There, now it's a Simpson's reference. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12A cookbook app. hmmm .. That is BORING.. .. (and cheap)
- MonkeyFarts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If you're just going to digg the guy down no matter what he says, just block him. The point of the digg up/down system is to digg up good comments and digg down bad comments. It's not supposed to have anything to do with the person's reputation whatsoever.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Before this gets buried again it is a Twilight Zone episode reference.
- ProximaC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7nicejew gets dugg down because he's been a dickish troll for so long that he is loathed by 90+% of digg users.
- msergeant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Typical, just what I need when I'm hungry, a bloody post on digg that has something to do with food and the pic is of a nice piece of cake *drool*
- Platypus3333, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6How is this different from Connoisseur?
And I don't mean to look like a spammer:
http://www.thelittleappfactory.com/application.php?app=Connoisseur - msprout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4God, compared to the mockup, that UI looks awful. I can't stand it.
- Dinges, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7They should not use scroll bars for the receipt section,
Anyone who cooks know that your hands get dirty, sticky with all kind of stuff you do not want to put on your mouse, and surely not on your trendy mac - KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From the rules section of MDA:
"MyDreamApp ("the Contest") is a contest in which entrants can win the opportunity to have experienced Macintosh software developers develop their idea for a software application." - dinkumator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ok even worse... i just looked at it again and its all just mockups!
they haven't done any actual programming in the past 2 months? - Kam3k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6What on earth is wrong with this being Apple only? We keep hearing how Windows has so much more software than OS X, what are you moaning about? Cross platform apps often suck anyway, the best OS X apps are exclusive to that platform as they're able to take full advantage of the Cocoa framework.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a Windows only version of this come along, and I won't be complaining about that.
@Saiing: I've never once heard a Mac user complain about a Windows app not being available for OS X. - Disparity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not all mockups (the one on top is real), but I agree that there is a ridiculous amount of hype surrounding this _cooking_ application.
- drobati, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I was extremely disappointed with the results of My Dream App.
I mean, come on a COOKBOOK?
There where much better applications to choose from.
And I really feel that the results were tampered with.
Like that app that allowed you to interface with Forums like you interface with RSS feeds with an RSS reader. Allowing you to skip all the web graphic ***** and just look at the raw text thats being said inside a nice program. That would of been awesome. - GamerzCorner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that is a great idea! email some devs. and see what they say. My biggest gripe with these cookbook programs is having to search online then mannually enter the recipe in the program ect. anyhow great idea, follow through with it
- BobaFettTDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want Whistler...now.
- lukeamotion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone noticed there is a nintendo wii in the mockup picture 3?
- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Isn't Steve Streza pushing for a standard in UI? How does this help it? Custom scroll bars? Custom window gradient? Really. If this is what we have been waiting since ~October for, I'm *seriously* disappointed.
- zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I must say, I can't wait for this to come out. Hopefully there will be a category that fits, poor college kid recipes(but still has a mac :P)
- dinkumator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4thats the most boring screenshot they could possibly post for an application that has gotten so much ridiculous hype
most programmers, (and myself i know) could make that in a week tops.. and even that is stretching it - sruffelman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Those ingredients don't sound like they would make a very good key lime pie.
- drobati, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea, I did. Hilarious.
- Chris24, on 10/12/2007, -11/+12It isn't only the first screenshot! Interesting Article.
- bewareofcabbage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@imikedaman - I mentioned the voice command in my original reply.
- mtappenden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been using YummySoup. So it's a rip of the original CookBook design. Should I care? I don't think so! It came out earlier, so that's what I got. And I'm glad I did, cuase the new CookBook design sucks!
- pintong, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Have you seen it? I'm no cook, but I'd buy it. It looks very well thought-out.
- cannibaljp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1meh... it wasn't an app that i voted for... but, in all honesty, my wife saw the screenshots over my shoulder - and she asked if there was a demo version she could try out...
so i guess that's a thumbs up from her.. - diggik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perfect timing for lunch!
- csimpkins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3And how is this better in any way than just going to AllRecipes.com?
- secretmode, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1NICE APP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I MEAN SCREENSHOT
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@simplenation
Isn't one ID enough? Why post and then defend yourself under an alias? - icdeadpeople, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How come the picture is for key lime pie but the ingredients and directions look like they are for pizza? LOL
- CMU1337CHIPPEWA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Key Lime Pie.. pizza crust... cheese... hmm... must be Key Lime Pie 2.0 or something....
- codemander, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've also got to say that a cookbook has got to be pretty low down on my list of "dream" apps. It's not dreadfully adventurous.
too bad that the game "Global Thermo-Nuclear Warfare" went out in round 1. Crapper!, although i understand that were some legal issues. - shyguy01, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4@ Gardenhead
It's not iTunes scrollbars - it's set as 'Graphite' in System Preferences. See the traffic lights in the top left - brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9omg they had a huge contest to find 'my dream app' and they came up with a cookbook database?
Holy crap. - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4WTF is this...? Dream App? Cook book app?
You've got to be joking... someone needs some imagination. - Gardenhead, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5aaaah! iTunes scrollbars.
- CaptainMordecai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The UI doesn't sit well with me. It seems a bit clunky. Particularly the search field in the centre pane. WTF is that? Plus the two types of scrollbars - glass ones and iTunes 7 style ones. Mockup 2 looks better for my money provided they move the seach field to a better position. Maybe a iPhoto style layout might work better than the three column layout too. I'm thinking more area needs to be dedicated to the recipes themselves.
Its a nice start but perhaps they should go back and take another look at the UI design and really get it right. - GamerzCorner, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4there is a lot of software like this? I've had a similar program on my computer for 2 years now...it even does conversions and shopping lists in addition to being a cookbook. I don't see what is so revolutionary about this program.
- imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"Anyway - how do you propose they fit a lengthy recipe on-screen big enough to be readable without some degree of scrolling?!"
A voice command to automatically scroll to the next page. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2The reason that most Mac apps dont get sent to Windows is because most windows users wouldnt be interested in them. I know a LOT of people who still use Winamp even though iTunes is new and IMO better.
