- WalkingDude, on 10/12/2007, -17/+31I'd like to see xcode!
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -81/+8Nice! But I feel Ive seen many of these features somewhere else before. I could have sworn these are features from other programs. Nah! Apple wouldn't steal features from other programs and put it in their OS..... Would they?
- JGuest, on 10/12/2007, -40/+30Holy crap man, do you realize how annoying that is getting. If apple NEVER put a feature from another program / OS in their OS it would eventually be so behind nobody would use it. The whole Mac firing at M$ thing is based around that fact that M$ is blantantly stealing many ideas straight from OS X. Yes, of course apple gets many of their new features from other sources, they can't come out with everything themselves, but the few good things they do come out with DO get copied by M$. So freakin drop the sarcasm!!
With love

Apple cannot be allowed to steal from other software makers. When you give an excuse to them to do that, you are putting other software makers out of business.
Do you want other peoples hard work to go for nothing just so Apple can steal their life's work. - thequietman44, on 10/12/2007, -10/+37@flag564
I'm sure M$ has never put anyone out of business through competition... oh wait... - jesusfranco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16@ flag564
No one said it was the right thing to do, but as far as I know these days very few software titles are original. Its all in the best product, Apples implementation of these features are much better than the software it was inspired by, not to mention its free with the os. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3"Apples implementation of these features are much better than the software it was inspired by, not to mention its free with the os."
Doesnt make it right. If I made an Itunes like music service with a "improved", but obvious copy of the real one, do you think I would get the same praise that Apple is getting for doing the same thing?
Somehow I doubt it. - Webteeth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Since the website is down and the duggmirror doesn't work, here's a zip file of the images. I'm not sure if any images were added after these images I have, so the collection may not be complete, but it's probably the best you'll get for now :)

competition is fine. As we have seen from the tons of "M$ stole this from (insert name)" stories however, Apple fans do not like when that happens but now oddly seem to have no problem with it when Apple is exposed as doing the same thing. - stuartjmoore, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4thank you
- vonnie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10What is a 'sharing account' (on the user account preferences)?
I'd like to see xcode and interface builder too. And more on 'objective c 2.0'- incongruity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5(from: http://www.aeroxp.org/board/index.php?showtopic=5142&st=0entry58868 )
""Sharing accounts" are possible, with users being restricted via an access control list (ACL) to certain applications or files. Developers can integrate with this by restricting access to a specific piece of content by connecting it to a sharing account. Sharing accounts have no home folder" - midlifecrisis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2"And more on 'objective c 2.0'"
Expect more along the lines of C#.
- incongruity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5(from: http://www.aeroxp.org/board/index.php?showtopic=5142&st=0entry58868 )
- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I'm really digging the grid spacing and guest accounts. :D This is just the tip of the iceberg for Leopard, however.
- Aanidaani, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I agree that these features look promising, but Apple really has to show something more substantial to make me want to switch.
- mmilian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He's just saying he likes those features cause those are little things that will never get touted during a keynote but will definitely be helpful in real world usage. The "switch-worthy" features we know of so far are things like Time Machine, Spaces, Mail and the improvements to Spotlight.
- TechPedia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I've added some comments/descriptions. Feel free to ask for more screenshots, and thanks for the Diggs!
- gahmahn, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3edited out
- iheartbeer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So, with "spaces" is there only one desktop folder? In other words, are the files on the desktop in one space the same as the others? I've only seen screenshots (from apple) with the hard drive on each.
What about desktop pictures, same one for all?
- melmyfinger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I love how you can bind apps to a specific space. One thing that I'm really curious about though: how does Spaces handle dual monitors?
- rkettner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, I was wondering this too... I don't know of any good mac software for managing dual monitors. For my PCs I use Ultramon... but have yet to find something like it for Mac. You know... so you can hit a mouse button or keyboard shortcut to flip apps from screen to screen. Does anything like this exist for Mac? I wonder if spaces will allow you to allocate a space to each monitor, and then flip them independently.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I doubt it will. The only thing I have ever seen is dragging windows from screen to screen. My guess is spaces will handle the second monitor with the first monitor, and you will have double wide spaces on your grid.
It would get really messy like that though with 3 or more monitors especially if they are different sizes.

- Webteeth, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Thanks a lot for the previews TechPedia, but for god's sake, don't use the stupid image preview thing. It's a pain in the ass when you try to view the images. I don't think anyone on the internet would prefer to see the fancy greyed out screen over the usability that a regular link would bring.
- mmilian, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2How is the "new iCal interface" any different from the old one?
- filenavigator, on 10/12/2007, -25/+1Something fishy here...not that I don't like the story. It is 2 days old. It was just put on the front page. This means that it has been in the number 1 spot for at *least* 1 day...since stories older than 24 hours get kicked.
This means someone at Digg had to manually put this on the front page...so much for no moderation.- Arkitan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Just because it was submitted two days ago, doesn't mean it was promoted two days ago.
- lickmygiggle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@filenavigator
Not sure exactly how that logic works out. But suuuuurree. - filenavigator, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Here is how it works (Mod me down, but you are all missing a major point).
A story can't be promoted unless it is less than 23hrs and 59min old. If it exceeds that it will never make it to the home page.
So. Now if the story is right on the edge...say at 23hrs and 15min. If it is promoted and the most recent post (The one on the top) the oldest I could possibly see it being is a 1 day and 30min. If it is 2 days old it means that it was the top post on the main page for the whole day! There is no way this has happened since stories get promoted almost every 30 minutes.
This can only mean that it fell off the upcoming stories, someone inside Digg found it and put it on the main page.
Now do you get it?
- pygmalion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Needs pic mirror !
- jouissance, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0anyone want to dig (pun'd!) the pics out of their browser cache?
- ojstone, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1digg affect is killing this site
- mpeters13, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6As an apple user, I'm not really impressed by Leopard yet. While a few of the new features are nice, I wouldn't be taking advantage of them and can't really justify the upgrade. Then again, if apple has secretly set an expiration date for BootCamp, I guess the upgrade will be inevitable...
Spaces is nice, but it isn't new. The functionality however is what I'm looking to get my hands on. I want to see how well spaces can be messed around with, customized... all that good stuff.
Time Machine is very pretty, but personally, I never used System Restore in Windows. I can't begin to imagine to hard drive storage requirements for maintaining this... THAT GOES TO SAY... it's not a terrible idea...
As for iChat and the rest... stationary is cute, but video chat in the current iChat hardly works. I can't imagine it working anymore w/ 5x as much data to push. UNO does a great job of unifying the OS to the new leopard look for free. If I'm missing something I should be excited about, someone please tell me.
And honestly people... I thought we were all past the whole MS steals from Apple vice versa toss up? I mean, who cares... what results is a great experience for all end users, regardless of platform. Meh. Loyalists.. who needs em.- alantocheri, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Time Machine != System Restore
It keeps track of files modified, not system info. Yes it can backup your apps, but it isn't designed (as far as I can tell) to be used if your system becomes unstable and you need to roll it back. It's for "Oops! I hit save instead of Save As 3 days ago" or deletion of files.
I don't use system restore either, but backing up files to DVDs or an external is always a good idea :)
I'd love iChat to work with MSN. MSN is all us Canadians use, and I want to be able to actually use the webcam if it's built-in :( - Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Time machine is a copy of Symantec`s GoBack software.
- thebrokenlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Those aren't nearly all the features of Leopard. Apple is still keeping many of the features under wraps, including the new Finder interface. I would definitely save the judgement until we have more information.
So we'll probably see in a few months whether it's worth the upgrade or not. - dalesmatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It may well be a bit GoBack'ish, but that's not a bad thing, it was a pretty neat piece of software.
- alantocheri, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Time Machine != System Restore
- alantocheri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Scroll up near the top for Webteeth's zip link.. Thanks Webteeth!
- yonah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Does anyone know when Leopard is due? Do you guys think people (like me) should wait buying a mac? I want a macbook now ;)
- sharpeyed1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I believe early '07 is the ETA. A Macbook bought now will 99.99999% for sure run Leopard. Enjoy!
- alantocheri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was going to ask the same thing Yonah. I'm worried if I go and buy a macbook that Leopard's animations etc will require a better video card.
Can any dev at WWDC confirm?
I doubt it but it just seems that if your on windows or osx, needing the newest video card for the next gen OSes is something we can't escape. :( - chadseld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have a macbook. The video card is not a gaming card, but it is way more than enough for the quartz animations in Tiger and Keynote, etc... There are no new animations in Leopard (that I have seen) which would tax this video card.
- hyperpasta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The only thing you have to look at are the cards that support the various graphics technologies and frameworks. The most taxing one in Tiger is called "Core Image", and that will work on the MacBook. The new one in Leopard is called "Core Animation", and will work hand-in-hand with Core Image. If you look at its preview page on Apple's site, it says that if your video card can handle Core Image, then it can also handle the new Core Animation.
So, in a word, yes.
The MacBook will fully support every single feature of Leopard with full graphical effects. You can buy one without worry. - alantocheri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice thanks for the advice. Now to decide on whether to get the student discount + free nano, or wait till macworld, hope they release an upgrade and just get the student discount .... *sigh*

- Hardcore41, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is like the fourth first look Ive seen.
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1You can never have too many first looks.
- TechPedia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I was in SF for the first time, with a corporate credit card and covered expenses. Yet, what did I do? I bought an external drive, installed leopard and posted it online.
Is that geeky, sad, pathetic or all of the above?
I think I was first...but at what cost to my dignity or poor, battered web server?
:)
- TechPedia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Sigh. This is what happens when you use shared hosting. Sorry for the crappy service. It won't happen again.

Thanks again for your patience and interest.- geniusj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TechPedia, I'm dying to know the answer to something..
Does Time Machine keep track of EVERY time you modify a file? Or does it just do that backup every night at whatever time you specify and you therefore get 1 revision per day? I'm wondering if it just backs up all the revisions its collected for the day at that time, or if it only keeps 1 per day.
- geniusj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TechPedia, I'm dying to know the answer to something..
- artman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple isn't stealing from anyone here. If they copy/pasted every line of a developer's code and renamed it, yes. Most of these were probably in the R&D pipe and I believe that Apple did recognize the potential for these to be an enhancement to their operating system. So they look at their own operating system and integrate a feature similar for their own product.
To the developers. You win some, you lose some. Now get back to work and create something better or new. Because as a designer, I get "ripped off" all the time. But the challenge is to go to the next level and innovate.
I believe Jobs said that Leopard will be released in the Spring of 2007. I think they'll have it out sooner than that (at least on their computers). - matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2i am sick of all of this apple stuff i am now labeling them all spam becasue it really is just ads for the company saying how great apple is then trashing all other comapnies. Join me if you agree.
- monsy68, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1:) LOL an apple a day keeps the doctor away.....
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah a apple but not like 13 apples a day
- strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like Leopard will switch to Mail.app style buttons...take a look at the Preview screenshot ( http://techpedia.org/t/Techpedia-Pages/Image11.html ).
These are worse than the existing style of toolbar buttons because they don't have unique silhouettes. - thespace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Personally, I'm just glad both companies now have competing operating systems that are 'sort of' on par with each other. Its only good for all of us who use either system.
And a quick message to Apple, you all better improve your developer tools and language supprt. .NET blows you clean outta the water.
