Oh, the irony. - sockpuppets, on 01/25/2008, -1/+27Funny, I thought the whole point was it being small and weighing, well, like air.
- sonnybobiche, on 01/25/2008, -5/+30This is a dumb benchmark. Theyre taking the latest apple laptop and pitting it against... some old ass machines they borrowed from their little brothers? There isn't even an attempt to make any actual scientific comparison here. Gizmodo just wanted some content, and they didn't have any new macbooks or macbook pros on hand, so they put out this garbage.
- borninda818, on 01/25/2008, -1/+19Who cares, I heard it runs pong like a dream!
- flipmoe, on 01/25/2008, -0/+18wasn't the MBA supposed to compete with the micro laptop market or something? Wouldn't it make more sense to pit it against those systems?
- Doerrt08, on 01/25/2008, -7/+23Ok, this is one of the worst bench mark tests I have ever viewed. The Macbook Air has an intel core 2 duo chip while the macbook and macbook pro that they used had an intel core duo chip. There would huge differences if they had the updated versions of each machine. What they did was the equivalent of comparing an iMac G5 to the first intel macs....
- brjndr, on 01/25/2008, -3/+18And it still lost 4 out of 5 tests, even with a newer generation processor.
- Chahrlie5, on 01/25/2008, -2/+15You can fit it in a manila envelope.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -2/+14Yeah, this is a stupid comparison. This would be like comparing a new iMac to an older Mac Pro. The older Mac Pro would still outperform the newer iMac, but that's because they're two totally different products, aimed at different users. There's a reason why Macs have Pro models. The Air was not built to compete with the other Mac laptops. They were built to provide for a very select crowd of mobile computer users.
- MWeather, on 01/25/2008, -0/+9It's got electrolytes!
- seldon452, on 01/25/2008, -11/+20I really can't read gizmodo any more. There writing is not very good and they act like children not journalists.
- tadunne, on 01/25/2008, -6/+14Wow the MBA is really bring out the haters..
- AvidPreatorian, on 01/25/2008, -9/+17if it's not a notebook for you, don't buy it. doesn't that make sense? people are mad and passing negative opinions at something they will never own.. pathetic
- ZachSka87, on 01/25/2008, -0/+7Well apparently it was also accomplished without a SSD, because, well, that's what they're testing here.
- sharigan, on 01/25/2008, -0/+7it will.
- DouglasScott, on 01/25/2008, -1/+8Their
- nmcvicke, on 01/25/2008, -1/+7I don't think you realize, not all computers are built specifically for gaming
- iRoy, on 01/25/2008, -2/+8Too bad only 4 people can afford it, one of 'em being Bill Gates.
- Fox318, on 01/25/2008, -5/+10But will it run Doom?
- Tippis, on 01/25/2008, -1/+6It might be a long stretch but... replace the batteries?
- alanp, on 01/25/2008, -1/+6This guys sums up the air perfectly, and you critical idiots NEED to read this :
http://wilshipley.com/blog/2008/01/macbook-air-hat ... - zeejay, on 01/25/2008, -1/+5It's a real computer - not a ***** hobbled ULV one - it's got a decent screen, and it's the size of a magazine. For a lot of people, that's enough. It's not for you. It's for them.
- Zippo, on 01/25/2008, -1/+5This guy hit the nail, although a bit crudely. Everyone knocking the Air is completely missing the point. The Air is NOT a Macbook Pro. It's not a powerhouse. It's not mean to be used for gaming or CPU-heavy tasks... Is the Mac Mini meant to be used for video editing or gaming? No, the Mac Pro is.
The Air is a light, slim, and simply laptop for people who want something, light, slim, and simple. People who surf the web and use iPhoto and iTunes. Maybe download a video here and there and watch it. This is the kind of laptop you bring around to the coffee shop to send IMs and read e-mail... and the kind of laptops the Japanese adore. - DarkDx, on 01/25/2008, -1/+5Real gamers build their own machine
- acatzr800, on 01/25/2008, -3/+6Thats the worst benchmark I've ever seen.. no real processor loading, ram performance, gfx benchmarking, FP calculations... Try again.
- sadilak, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3It most certainly runs chess. The gams is free too
- estvir, on 01/25/2008, -8/+11I don't think even Apple knows. I think they just went with "Oooo, it's pretty * giggling like a girl * and light!"
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -1/+4Why do you say underpowered.. I run photoshop & final cut (ok express) on a 2ghz macbook which they say it compares with. There are not many apps that require anymore power, for people who are doing proper work and business stuff it is plenty fast enough.
What exactly do you need more power to run? - haydesigner, on 01/25/2008, -3/+6The whole 'Fail' thing is OLD, stupid and childish.
So go ahead and be 'witty' by trademarking it. - RevToTheRedline, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3Look again, xbench results were posted.
- AvidPreatorian, on 01/25/2008, -3/+6yea stupid jokes is about all you can pull out. there goes your logic and argument.
don't you have a virus to quarantine or something?
shoo! - digginamish, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3How can they call these benchmarks when they're comparing apples to oranges (sorry, pun intended). If they're not comparable systems then they are not in any way accurate.
- bacon_skoda, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3#10 now.
- groovin, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3These SSD drives will not disappoint.
From wikipedia: on SSD "are characterized by fast data access, less than 0.01 milliseconds (over 250 times faster than the fastest hard drives in 2004) and are used primarily to accelerate applications that would otherwise be held back by the latency of disk drives."
I think that there will be a lot of people eating crow, when the SSD equipped MBA are tested. - TheWindBlows, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3those benchmarks are off balance.
what you're really getting there is the speed of the hard drives vs. each other.
4200rpm 1.8" vs. 5400rpm 2.5"
If that gives an idea the benchmarks would be completely different if the Air had the SSD in it as MacBook Air should really not have had a HDD to start off with, it was there to keep the price more fair... - RyomaNagare, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2As a relative new mac user, who has still to become a blind zealot, I was really expecting something really portable, perhaps something the size of 2 ipod touch, twice the screen-size, and twice the specs. with a better version of macosx (3rd party apps) ability to use a blue-tooth keyboard and mouse. that should not cost more than 799 us$ considering the current price of ipodtouch. which is also great to use with the new refund your government its issuing, helping reactivate the economy. i know I'd hit it in a millisecond.
- mhedden, on 01/25/2008, -1/+3buried just for the fact that you picked dell....
- chingy1788, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2Crysis is no longer the most demanding game
Assassins creed is, even though IGN didn't give it a score anywhere near Crysis's - masterkenobi, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2Built this a couple of years ago and still running on it:
* Intel Pentium® 4 660 Processor Prescott 3.6GHz, 800MHz FSB, Socket 775, 2MB Cache
* Asus P5ND2-SLI nForce4 SLI Intel Edition P4/Pentium D/Celeron 1066FSB LGA775 DDR2 ATX Motherboard w/Audio, Gigabit LAN, RAID/Serial ATA
* 2GB kit (1GBx2), Ballistix 240-pin DIMM Upgrade for a ASUS P5ND2-SLI Deluxe System Line
* 2 x Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6L300S0 300GB Serial ATA 7200RPM Hard Drive w/16MB (set up with a raid mirror)
* Coolermaster CAV-T01-WKC Cavalier 1 Aluminum Mid Tower Case w/Window (Black)
* Sony DDU1615/B2S 16X IDE DVD-ROM (Black)
And I recently upgraded my video card to an nVidia Geforce 8800 GTS 640mb, and my rig still runs Bioshock on full settings like a champ. I run on a dual head monitor, 24" and 20" widescreens.
I also own a Dell laptop for remote gaming, which has a GeForce 7300 256mb, 15.4" widescreen and is more than enough for some gaming on the go.
So you self-righteous pricks can all go ***** yourselves.
kthanksbye - Acolyte357, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2ohh so you would like the MBA benchmarked against a $3000 pc?
- acatzr800, on 01/25/2008, -1/+3MBA is nothing more than an exercise in design. Nothing more. Bringing it to market was a mistake.
- MrBlackkcalBrM, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2Remember that they compared the Air to an older Macbook with half the RAM. Hardly Conclusive proof of anything more than a horribly biased test in the airs favor, and it still fell short.
- Vorin, on 01/25/2008, -4/+6Macbook Err
- jhofman, on 01/25/2008, -8/+10Need the SSD action.
- 666dorado, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2so sick of all the whiners here. if the Macbook Air doesn't cut it for you in terms of performance, buy the Macbook Pro for an extra $100. quit bitching about the price. if you can't afford it, don't buy it, or get a better job. $1800 is not that much for a computer. most modern SLR digital camera's are $1500 with a lens, at least. a good mountain bike will set you back at least that much.
- Sonic84, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2I wonder how the SSD flavor compares. the model they tested seems pretty on-par for a iPod Hdd.
- chingy1788, on 01/25/2008, -0/+21.8k micro laptop
well eeePC is out...
i think there are those tiny Sony laptops - PanicModel, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1I'm not sure if the macbook Air is really worth it.
i've read lots of benchmarks articles, and also the pros and cons here http://www.maconair.com/the_pros_and_cons
It's been 3-4 months since it arrived and I still can not decide, can you believe it? - MrBlackkcalBrM, on 01/26/2008, -2/+3People aren't mad because they won't own it, they're pissed because it was a colossal, overpriced let down. I love my mac, but alot of people were excited for another iphone type innovation and were disappointed in apple because what they got was an overpriced wannabe macbook.
- Dymphna, on 01/31/2008, -0/+1Kettle, pot.
