- Phocion55, on 08/15/2008, -6/+171"...but a video of the handset leaked on the Internet reveals a device which lacks the elegance that's already drawn millions to Apple's iPhone."
Interesting how AppleInsider could make that assertion from an obnoxiously blurry 45 second video. - pyrates, on 08/15/2008, -4/+85So people are gonna judge a video of a pre-release version of a device and say it fails? Sorry, but I will hold judgment until it is released. This reminds me of when an alpha version of doom 3 was leaked and people were saying it's terrible and crashes. Unless it is shown off officially, do not take the word of any idiotic journalist who is judging a product that they were not meant to see or try. Remember when the iPhone was shown off 6 months before release? Most of it was jpg's because not all of it was finished. But you didn't hear journalists complaining about that because we knew it wasn't a finished product yet. Shame on you apple insider for a blatant attempt at trying to make a product look bad that's not even declared finished yet.
- TheKorn2, on 08/16/2008, -7/+79It's apple insider... Even if the phone came with a hole where you could stick your dick in and receive a BJ, they'd complain that it didn't come with ANOTHER attachment to lick out your ass at the same time.
That said, the thing does look kind of thick due to the slider. Never really been a sidekick fan, but if you text all day I can see how this would destroy the iphone. - ChayesFSS, on 08/16/2008, -8/+73What, this from appleinsider.com?!?!?! The same people who said that Android was going to be a terrible platform and that most developers should move ahead with the iphone?!?! Stay classy Appleinsider.com, stay classy
- Johnnell, on 08/16/2008, -1/+50Sounds like Darth Vader was recording
- pedepy, on 08/15/2008, -2/+47That's irrelevant in the end, since Android is a smartphone OS platform.
For all we know, it'll probably be runnable on iphone's sooner or later. - slugicide, on 08/16/2008, -11/+51I'm pretty excited. I know you Apple fans love your closed source, hyper-expensive gadgets, but I just can't feel ya. I can't wait for an affordable phone that I can install *any app I want* on. I know it's not going to make feel all special and superior, like your iPhones does, but it'll definitely be really useful.
- l800LEMMINGS, on 08/16/2008, -1/+32the creepy breathing in the video was a lot more disturbing then the phone
- jamezracer, on 08/16/2008, -5/+30I see appleinsider is quick to attack every little part of a product that they have never even used or rly seen. damn fanboys...
- spdorsey, on 08/15/2008, -3/+27It looks fairly mature, but clearly not ready for prime time yet.
The functionality looks on par with the iPhone. The OS, the UI, and the apps remain to be seen whether or not they are of the expected quality. Although I think I'm not the only one who is hoping for Google Earth on this thing.
Also, I'm hoping for a better form factor. The hardware featured in the video is square and hard-edged. I like the iPhone's cornerless design, I hope that is an option from one of the vendors that make "Gphones". - dstz, on 08/16/2008, -12/+35[sound of *****-sucking] lacks the elegance that's already drawn millions to Apple's iPhone [/sound of *****-sucking]
- bubba9999, on 08/16/2008, -1/+22AppleInsider was deliberately spreading the FUD with this one. For one, this video was only *rumored* to be the HTC Dream. There was no information about it, or the version of Android being shown on it. Only rumors.
AppleInsider has been doing anything it can to diss the platform for months now. After this one, I'm not going there to read their garbage any more. - meghalc, on 08/16/2008, -3/+21AppleInsiders are trying to boost their self esteem before the big fight.
- hardeep1singh, on 08/16/2008, -5/+20Android can unshackle the iphone to make it REAL Smartphone, if that happens.
- pubbie, on 08/16/2008, -3/+16Ok, how about linking to the real article http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/15/technology/15goo ... instead of to a fanboy blog giving their worthless opinion about what the article is talking about. Blogspam.
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -10/+22Looks like a Sidekick. Oh joy.
- Jus2Gud, on 08/16/2008, -3/+15So him wanting an affordable phone that he can install any application on makes him an anti-Apple zealot?
- chkdg8, on 08/16/2008, -0/+11Sounds like Darth Vader's obese gay brother-in-law.
- AltF3, on 08/16/2008, -8/+19You guys are dumb.
It was the operating system that was being displayed, who gives a ***** about the phone. - YodaJones, on 08/16/2008, -5/+15I am a big time iPhone fan, but I always wanted a Linux phone and I still believe that that is the real future of hand held communications devices. First I thought OpenMoko was going to be good, but they can't seem to get it together and their handset is fugly. Android could be a winner, but already it seems that Google doesn't have their heart in it. Google is guilty of having a lackadaisical approach to everything and proof of that attitude it the perpetual "beta" of every single thing they do. I don't, and I sure I am not alone, want a mobile phone that is perpetually in beta and that is the signal that Google is sending.
- rdvon, on 08/16/2008, -0/+10I hate hearing Android reviews from "Apple Insider".
I mean really, read this quote: "those familiar with the device describe it as "big and bulky," and nowhere near as sleek as iPhone that's forever altered the landscape of the mobile industry.
No it's not an Iphone it's IPHONE!! and it shaped the landscape of the mobile industry!!! (Android sucks!)
It kind of scares me how much people try to defend their precious Apple. - Urkel, on 08/16/2008, -1/+11I'm curious. What is it about this unreleased beta product seen on a blurry video that makes you say "it isn't ready for prime time"?
As consumers then getting these pre-release videos are great because we get a preview about a product before it's released. But nowadays with everyone racing to slam everything as "fail" then more companies will keep their betas to themselves. Of course it's not ready for prime time, prime time judgement comes when the product is ready to be released. - joshualamgroup, on 08/16/2008, -1/+10I think there's a Street View function, though not on this video..
Google purposely omitted this from the iPhone.. - ahpro, on 08/16/2008, -2/+11Being a fan of the iPhone i have to be honest and say that the person giving the demo of it was rubbish. If steve jobs just went randomly clicking iphone buttons with a blurry camera which he was breathing heavily into and he wasn't telling you what anything was doing, it would also look rubbish.
- lazlonger, on 08/16/2008, -1/+9thank you for stating the obvious and saving me the typing.
these appleheads are jumping the gun in their eagerness to continue to keep a false score and find themselves the winners. - 1773nium, on 08/16/2008, -1/+9I am Mouth Breather!!
- Naidel, on 08/16/2008, -3/+11Why? Perhaps because you like the iphone hardware but loathe their crippling software lock-in? It's the reason I haven't bought an iphone.
- GTanaka, on 08/16/2008, -1/+9I think the problem lies in the fact that Google is, for the most part, a group of programmers. Programmers are usually unworried about aesthetics and feel awful bringing things out of beta because that usually means they are limited by the freedom "beta" inherently has, such as core component rewrites, etc. As coders, Googlers simply don't want to call something finished until they feel it's practically perfect, and their work reflects that.
- aprogressivone, on 08/16/2008, -1/+9Its clearly a pre-release version. Android is open source, you can actually go ahead and install it on certain HTC models already. It does not have anything the final version will have, but you can get the general idea of how it works. Actually you guys can download a prelease emulator SDK that runs on your computer if you dont have a HTC phone already. Check it out here.

Instructions are here
http://code.google.com/android/reference/emulator. ... - RungeKutta, on 08/16/2008, -0/+7I was expecting some OpenMoko "abortion" by the summary and the actual article, but it looked fine to me. Of course you can't tell much of anything with a short video that's so blury you can't even read one character. Hell, the video is so blurry you can barely make out the signal strength - or is that the battery meter?
Anyways, why do you think it's clunky and fairly fugly? - MacParrot, on 08/16/2008, -0/+7@ meghalc
Obviously you're not a hardware designer or know what one does. Apple uses industry standard chipsets, their motherboards and layouts are all their own. - DeathGod321, on 08/16/2008, -2/+9It's like people who buy an apple computer and then say it's great because you can put windows on it.
- Nicoon, on 08/16/2008, -1/+7Easy there, Vader.
- arkaycee, on 08/16/2008, -1/+7From the heavy breathing, the phone wasn't the only pre-release part of the video.
- birch25, on 08/16/2008, -5/+11you can make fun of apple's 5-8% market share in personal computers, but they have the #1 smart phone on the market in both sales and user satisfaction. throwing around a market share number from 5 years ago in a completely different market isn't going to win any debates.
- meghalc, on 08/16/2008, -2/+8Ofcourse, they need their Apple fanbase! If they talk nice, wont they lose their programmers!
- Shadowgamers, on 08/16/2008, -3/+9"First Android phone sighting reveals awkward iPhone rival"
"appleinsider.com"
This article couldn't be biased against Android at _all_, right? :V - DaffyDuck, on 08/16/2008, -1/+7Thanks for translating that into Andrew Dice Clay for me. I couldn't have understood your point otherwise.
- mohamedmansour, on 08/16/2008, -0/+6Many people went with blackberry instead of iphone. Iphone is proven not to be great at typing.
- Urkel, on 08/16/2008, -1/+6If you're matching Android vs iPhone then many would prefer an iPhone. But what people are failing to recognize is that the decision for billions will be Android vs their outdated 'talk only' phones. So this is by far going to be the easy choice for those who aren't willing to switch to ATT. And that's a LOT of people.
- Elranzer, on 08/16/2008, -0/+5So it's on T-Mobile? That means it's not bound to AT&T. That means it's automatically more useful than the iPhone.
- Pake, on 08/16/2008, -3/+8These days, someone could release an old ass Nokia and iPhone fans would still say it's copying the iPhone because it's capable of making phone calls and being recharged.
- MacParrot, on 08/16/2008, -0/+5Releasing it before it was ready was the mistake Apple made with the iPhone 3G. Since they already had a market ready for it, the phone will survive the experience, but with the Android as a new platform they need it to be right.
Google, take the time you need to make it right - buddyw, on 08/16/2008, -2/+7Also, why listen to opinions on Android from AppleInsider? I'm sure that the iPhone received overwhelmingly negative reviews from blackberry fanboy sites.
- psylence, on 08/16/2008, -1/+6Not seriously. You would want an investment to, you know, appreciate. Apple products depreciate slower, but they don't generate a return when you sell them. They are not investments, or maybe just investments for retards.
- 2Bnor2B, on 08/16/2008, -1/+6I am sorry, I know that I am going to get heat for this but...
The screen does not look anything like any previous demonstrations of the Android interface.
I watched the video several times and I still do not know what they were showing. - jakem1, on 08/16/2008, -0/+5Funny, I don't see much user satisfaction at the moment. Also, your 5-8% market share is just for one market. Worldwide Apple is just as insignificant as ever.
Don't confuse publicity with satisfaction. - Vodd9, on 08/16/2008, -4/+8I stopped reading when I saw AppleInsider written.
Buried. - colonelxc, on 08/17/2008, -0/+4I didn't know there were tags for that.
- Wailord, on 08/16/2008, -2/+6Sadly, you don't dictate marketshare.
