- wiifm69, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Seems like a nice user friendly process, dugg. Can't wait until this software is more 'public'
- jamesallen74, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Good grief that camera guy sucks. Put the camera DOWN on a book or something. Frame the shot and LET IT GO!
- TicTacAtak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16I bought an iphone last night....dont plan to stay with att so why get stuck in a 2 yr contract...cant wait to use the iphone with Tmobile...im a 7 yr loyal customer to Tmobile...loyal to apple too...who gives a F about ATT.
- ProfChaosOmega, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10oh itll be public soon enough. if youre savvy enough to know how to use the software, youre savvy enough to know how to use bittorrent.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Over 9000?
..... Damn, that is seriously going to get me dugg down. - pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8ok..... ok.......ok............ ok
- misconfig, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12Looks like I'm buying an iPhone, can't wait to get rid of the POS Mobile Media 5 'smartphone'. It's so smart I have to reboot it daily because the stupid thing locks up randomly.
- erzz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6seriously... who gives a ***** about whether an app you will use once looks fugly or not.
A life? meet mshanly - justinp, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9SERIOUS BUSINESS
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I'm starting to freak out a bit.
If you heard, the iPhoneSIMFree guys are being a bit shady right now. They sent out invoices (requests for payment) for their solution, then when one place paid, they said they had changed their receiving account and to please submit payment again.
Looking awfully iffy now. - akf2000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4re: torrenting/ pirating this s/w - it's doing a ton of phoning home with the iPhone's IMEI to verify the licence, and who's better at protecting their own software than hackers?
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Got a WM5 phone too, cept it works great, the only time it locks up is when I try to download a file with Opera beta, hopefully the Opera team will fix that bug soon. Other than that it runs fine for days.
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yes, "better" as in "worthless without".
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4You can't seed vapor.
- hifiDesign, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, and a half-decent tripod will run $25 @ Circuit City. But you know how these things go: geeks, heat of the moment, we don't think about these things sometimes.
- steverl22, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7I have WM6 and the same problems your dealing with I'm dealing with......sad really. Cant wait to get a Iphone for my birthday.
- bcullman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3while this is most likely legit, it would be better to have a video that first demonstrates that the phone is first in a locked state, and *then* runs the unlock software
- ginjuro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Oh yes! Poor, long-suffering AT$T. Everybody weep for the harmless kicked puppy company that works hard to maintain it's stranglehold on internet and telecommunications, illegally give records of private conversations to the NSA and generally alienate its customers in its interminable quest for more money and control. It's very fitting that they use the Death Star as their logo.
Shill. - superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Video? Unless it shows one uncut shot from the box being bought at an Apple store to the hack being installed, how do you know anything about the phone used in the video?
I would be able to believe what they are saying, if they would actually release something... - giveer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Watching that was like that part in Office Space Where Peter's trying to leave the office and his Mac keeps throwing status bars at him?... yeah...
- jabob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Are there any Canadian iPhone owners that have tried this?
I'm curious to see if it will work on the Rogers network... - superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well I was loyal to T-Mobile as well until I realized AT&T has a way better network where I live. Also from experience traveling T-Mobile service seemed pretty spotty.
Basically as far as I'm concerned all providers are the same, really only preference should go to whoever is strongest where you'll use the phone the most - but the functionality of the iPhone trumps that as a consideration for me.
I hope you can get unlock working OK and make use of T-Mobile as you wish, I just wouldn't be so quick to dismiss AT&T if that really is your only option. - justinkwaugh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2it's all about non-us customers. They can't use an iphone at all without this. So, millions of potential customers outside the us = $
- Pyrogen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2SERIOUS ***** BUSINESS, THIS BLOGGING.
- hiro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Absolutely, people should do what you want for nothing. After all, you work for free don't you...?
- LeadHead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2'you wana pick me up?...i said you wana pick me up?...you wana pick me up?'
- springo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I still think this a scam. How do we know it was not hardware hacked before the video/during the video? Release the damn software if you want to be believed... Oh wait, you can't because it doesn't exist! But you'll be rich by the time we get to know that, right?
http://digg.com/apple/iPhoneSIMfree_purchased_Undisclosed_Buyer_and_Amount - cgomez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How is this exclusive is it if everyone else has covered it two weeks ago?
- keysersoze1234, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I'm already on the AT&T network on a family plan, but I really don't want to sign a 2-year commitment (I'll be leaving the country in a few months for a while). If I unlock the phone, will I be able to use my current SIM card, without the 2 year contract? Also, will I be able to use the EDGE network, and would I be able to get an unlimited data plan that would work with the iphone?
- duke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Listen to TWiT. Leo let it slip.
- mshanly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wait. Look over at Engadget, the icon for the unlock launcher is different from this video.
- passionemobile, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Cool :-D
- Nitro420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nobody has tried this yet. There is a hardware unlock out right now but it requires you to open up your iphone. And yes, i have see Rogers network people getting this to work.
- antivirus6613, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You do know that microsoft tried the same thing with vista. Look what happened.
- Pyrogen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'd like some tubgirl, with a side order of goatse, and I'll finish it off with a hiveboob, please: sir.zrx@gmail.com thx!
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Needs more emphasis!!!!!!!!
- Pyrogen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Because they can.
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Aside from a few exclusive sharing agreements, AT&T will always have better coverage than T-Mobile, because AT&T operates on both GSM 1900MHz and GSM 850MHz. T-Mobile is 1900MHz only, because they got into the US market way too late.
Honestly, I don't know why anyone would want to get an iPhone and use it on T-Mobile. Worse coverage, slower datarate, no visual voicemail, and all at pretty much the same price point. - metalica77, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3You are defiantly right it is ***** that Gizmodo is taking credit for engadget's work. There "EXLUSIVE" Title is ***** engadget had the story and it's crap that they can say that.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1You do know that you have to authenticate at iPhoneSIMFree's servers, don't you? You can grab the client software all you want (hell, they'll probably release it on the website) but you will need to fork over your credit card to a reseller so they can authorise you to use it.
- tirofiban, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm all for programmers getting paid for their hard work. But really, how many people are going to do this? All the cell phone providers seem about the same to me. There are easy ways to get out of your cell phone contract (ie roam a lot until they end your contract) to switch to AT&T. Is AT&T that bad? Plus I think the visual voice mail is highly underrated as a feature. I have trouble seeing who exactly these hacker's target market is. I wish them the best, but I can't see how this is going to make them rich.
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually even if you are fine with AT&T (which I am) it still would be nice to be able to buy a SIM in another country for temporary use, and not pay roaming fees just to make a few calls.
- dheaddy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6How many more stories on unlocking the iPhone can digg handle?
- aluminumpork, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I can't even purchase ATT in my area, and yet we have Verizon, T-Mobile, Unicel, Cellular One, Qwest and Sprint. We have ATT coverage here, but cannot purchase it here.
- mshanly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Someone will reverse engineer it to remove the authentication feature, meaning that it won't phone home and you will be able to unlock your iPhone for free.
- Stoyanov, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1In my opinion there would not have been a problem if Gizmodo had linked directly to the video in the first place, without forcing readers to go to and/or read a story first.
- toetagger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Maybe a person has a T-mobile contract and wants to swap phones... etc, etc, etc...
- James942, on 02/02/2008, -0/+0Phone companies all over the world lock phones but dont worry there is always a way to unlock them. http://www.myzury.com
- cywei99, on 02/04/2008, -0/+0The people behind unlocking the iphone giving out them for free. I heard that to unlock a iphone needs lots of time. Rather generous of them to give them out for free.
http://www.myselfhypnosis.net/
http://www.mindpowerspecialreport.com/ - toetagger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Once the iPhone is unlocked, you will be able to use ANY GSM/Sim card with it, including your current att sim from a different GSM phone. What we don't know is if att will recognize the iPhone's ESN# and knock you off. Simply try it. If att knocks you off, cancel w/them and get a prepaid account with att or T-Mobile for a few months. When you go abroad, buy a prepaid sim card there for the iPhone.... when you come back, sign up with T-Mobile for a 1 year contract, get a free cheapo phone, put it in a draw, use that sim and data plan for the iPhone. Hope this helps. I have T-Mobile, I call them up, they kiss my ass they are so decent...
