- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If the story is right, then there's an noticeable but not intolerable markup--$2599 for the 42", $3299 for the 50". But considering the features that they supposedly offer, and the Apple coolness thing, it sounds good to me. I've finally found myself in the market for a plasma TV recently, and it looks like I may be thanking myself for not succumbing to temptation quickly....
- ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Buy APPL stock. Buy it NOW!!!!! (to make me rich)
- hitbyatrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So. . . you're telling me that I can get the Apple 30" HD Cinema Display for $2499, or I can wait and drop $100 more for a 42" Apple Plasma set that RUNS OSX? I'm not buying it man. (Unless it's true. In which case, I'm buying two.)
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think it's gonna happen. Steve has been talking to us in code about this for a while. "We won't do a video iPod, the screens are too small." "People don't watch TV like that, they site at home and..." This makes complete sense...why add video content to the iTunes Store without making a device for people to watch it? They will completely handle any of the content creators concerns by integrating the computer with the display. All the other TV services this week are debuting 480i content. It would be just like Steve to gouge their eyes out the same way he did Creative with the Nano by deploying HD content now.
So, let's see. I get HD DirecTV for about $60/month. From that, my TiVo collects about 25 1-hour long episodes per month. Not to mention BSG 75 comes in 480i yuk. The rest I can get over the air. So for about the same cost per month, I can watch commercial free, pick and choose episodes now, not wait for TiVo to catch them, etc. I think this would be a Good Thing[tm]. - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple's LCD remote to go with the Plasmas.
http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1164 - animefx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this is TRUE... Listen to last week's TWiT Podcast.
- bradspry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A computer built into the TV certainly eliminates the whole connectivity issue between computers and TV's. Direct download to TV... Hmmmm. I like the way that sounds. Where's Mark Cuban? :-)
- heymark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you know the first Wawa store was built less than a mile from my house. Oh, Wawa, you're silly.
- Abduladu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ha--Fun Story...but it doesn't sound real likely. We'll see....
- SalMoriarty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1future apple press releases will now be released at your local sandwich instead of the customary PR agency or the web.
that is all. carry on. - CasadeMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The thing that would make this more believable is if it were LCD. Plasma TVs are prone to image burn-in. Having a static image, like a menu bar or Mac OS desktop would not be good for a plasma in the long term.
I own a 42" plasma and I am constantly fighting the urge to hook my Mac or my Playstation to it for this very reason. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"They do not have capacity to stock that size of product in any reasonable quantity. The logistics just are not in place. I am thinking of it from this perspective because I am a custom A/V installer, and we deal with these issues everyday."
Pioneer delivers + installs the things into your home for you. Could they contract the job of distribution out to delivery/installation specialists? You could go into the Apple store, look at it, and get it delivered. Also, perhaps Apple will finally sell the Plasmas alongside the competition? Given the purchasing process most people use with plasmas (direct comparison) this makes sense.
The issue of repairability could be resolved if the viiv center is a 'module'. Alternatively, you could just do the usual apple thing, throw it out and buy the new model to be released in 2 mo. - johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11) O'Grady and his sites have a history of nailing mac rumors for a few years now. maybe not always 100% accurate, but they have scooped a few Apple bombshells in the past.
2) after their lawsuit last year, it's understandable they would be vague. is there a legal loophole to insinuate info without flat out reporting it? besides, can't they have fun with it?
3) maybe you're just bitter you don't live in Wawa country? - skealoha86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this guy should be writing for Wired magizine... that's a friggin cool article...
AirMac?? - deathBOB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg, because rampant speculation and rumor-mongering is fun.
- Akram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think Apple is about to drop a bomb on us again. I was thinking a while back how Apple was really quiet lately and how with all this new technology at CES, they are gonna have a fight this year. But with all the rumours building up, we could be in for a fight.
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can understand why Apple wouldn't go with LCD. LCD HDTVs of this size are crap, especially for the price. And once OLED is more advanced LCD will be history in pretty much everything that uses it. Plasma is preferable for HDTVs of the size mentioned in this rumor. I don't have any reason to believe this rumor, but it wouldn't surprise me if it wound up being true. And plasma sounds like the way they would go. Then in a year or two they will unveil the new fancier ultra thin OLED versions, because you know Apple will be all over OLED.
- lukaso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My first question is why now, when everyone is ready to go to LCD would Apple jump on the Plasma bandwagon. Building too much functionality into a TV set causes huge service problems for the company. If you hard drive fails, what are you supposed to do? There is no cost effective way to sercive products like that. What would make more sense is to have a technology partner like Sony that would manufacture the panels (which of couse they would have someone manufacturing the panels anyway) And have a mac mini type slide in interface so if the computer needs repair or upgrading, they can just slide it out and take it for repair, etc. I can confidantly say, that unless the product has this feature, Apple will not be selling it. The third reason that Apple will not be building and selling this product is the way their stores are setup. They do not have capacity to stock that size of product in any reasonable quantity. The logistics just are not in place. I am thinking of it from this perspective because I am a custom A/V installer, and we deal with these issues everyday.
- grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TV and Apple did hold hands way back in the day. Since HDTV is the new fad, they can jump on the TV ship again. With style of course. But they will have to make the displays cheap if they want to compete with MS in the Media Center OS market. Wonder if Kevin will be up for an Apple HDTV ad now he's in the OSX chew.
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's certainly interesting. While it sounds pretty off-the-wall and also sort of too perfect-sounding to be true, I've thought that about Apple switching to Intel and video iPods, and both were true. So, who knows, it's worth the fun read. One thing that made this story either completely false or a details-changed-to-protect-the-innocent is that the shift manager was supposedly on the Asteroid project (a rumored audio breakout box that has yet to surface). I mean, come on. Who would go from working at Apple in Cupertino to working as a shift manager at a convenience store in PA or NJ?
- imajilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 50" iMac
- Nielske, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell does sell plasmas.
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/tvs?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs - robsonde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so insted of turning the Mac-mini into a home theater unit.....
build a MACOS 10.4.4 X86 box into the big ass TV!!
I think the story maybe a load of crap but it would make a cool product. - inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0O'Grady, was right last year about ALL their predictions ;-) Especially the crazy ones. Nobody would believe it.
An Apple plasma would be awesome, it would be the first plasma with a really, really kick ass dvr, and interface. - NtroP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If this is true, I'll order it ten minutes after the keynote. I just talked to my brother about him getting me (wholesale) a commercial-grade 50" plasma display to replace my "tube". This would be awsome. Not likely, but awsome if it were.
Steve-O-Buddy, if you're listening and aren't doing this, you should. - Cybrwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Totally Dugg! I love wild Rumors, they make the whole thing, more fun!
- firefoxguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if its true its gonna be LCD and not plasma, plasma only lasts about 8 years
- Merlyn383, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lightningrod220, the keynote actually is on Tuesday this year.
http://macworldexpo.com/live/20/media//news/CC518319 - Vector713, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why do people think that everything apple does is godly? i can understand being excited about a plasma with a built in machine, but plasmas suck and die in a few years anyway... and i could never see using a 42" plasma as a computer, and have to attatch an external display, because the plasma died :
- Deuterium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Super, NOT! I live in Colorado above 6,000ft. Here is another Apple product I won't be able to use.
- lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The summary is wrong. Why? It claims a tuesday keynote, but the keynote will be on monday this year, at 9AM PST. The large screen is possible, but not as likely as they would like to think. Why? How many people are buying the 30 inch that can actually afford it? So do you think they'll buy a yet larger screen?? Apple doesn't care very much about television, so this isn't in their character.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg... because everyone was reacting with similar scepticism at the rumors of Apple's new "mp3 player" a few years ago. Same with the music store. Same with the iMacs. Same with the Intel switch. I give up. I believe anything at this point.
- bimmerboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg...So will Steve Jobs share the stage again with Ken Kutaragi (Sony) or Yun Jong-Yong (Samsung) at this year's MWSF when they introduce this? "The Year of High-Def" Part II
- GGERG15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0maybe not plasma... but I could definetly see Apple being the first to have a perfect marriage between the pc and the TV. With the release of Frontrow i see this to be very possible...
- wired4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We can only wish, a mac tv with osx damm that would be cool.
- evilrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg it!! even though some may think this rumor is crap.... but, i dont doubt this at all. I would be very happy to see a product like this come out, it certainly would not be a desktop replacement.... (theres no way that would have the power to do all of the logic and final cut pro stuff i do on my macs.... but, excel spreadsheets could be freaking huge!! LOL) Its a TV x/ OS X... that would be great... im in the market for a new tv, and i was thinking plasma (although, im a CEDIA certified custom A/V installer, and kind of a video snob... so, i was thinking Pioneer Elite... id have to see what this panel looks like... at the rumored price points, im sure it wouldnt compare...) But Apple has been doing TV for a long time.... in fact i still have a Performa 5215CD with the TV tuner card in it serving duty as a TV in my bedroom!!!!
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0plasmas.....i don't think so. Better computers on the way, yep.
- ravuya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We'll see, but I strongly doubt it. That LCD remote would sure be nice though.
- scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LG's 50 inch with built in dvr is 5K!! if they can make a 50" plasma with a built in mac for 3299 mac has severly changed their ways. he has to be joking about the wawa clerk thing.. right? this sounds like a story out of a spy joke movie
- ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"1. There is more truth to this than most think. PowerPage isn't the first to suggest this rumor.
2. There are related patents to back up the notion of the remote control.
3. People who are saying "this is fiction" outright obviously haven't been around Apple very long.
4. The Leafs suck. Go Habs."
Arent you supposed to be @ www.le-digg.com :P.
GO LEAFS GO!!! - ra3ndy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Buy APPL stock. Buy it NOW!!!!! (to make me rich)"
umm....Apple's stock name is AAPL. APPL is the Association of Partners for Public Lands. Non-Profit = good luck with that investment there, chief. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have an insider friend who works for Apple and I know they spin alot of crazy ***** to drum up interest before the mw. And this ***** was sooooo funny, it spread like freakin wildfire. But anyway, the specs on their new products are actually floating around out there within the die hard mac freaks because this is probably going to be the greatest product announcement ever at macworld.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0doubt it but maby

First of all you're taking Dell's 30 inch monitor as a "standard" when they just barely started selling their displays. It must be few people that have actually ordered one and received it. Apple's been selling the 30 inch for many many months now.
Second, Dell doesn't sell a plasma 30 inch and neither does Apple. They sell LCDs. - ButchCivic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pa-lease, a plasma mac. Why would Apple use plasmas LCD's -
1. Are much lighter (could you imagine trying to bring a plasma in for repairs)
2. Are much thinner
3. Are much cooler running
4. Have no burn-in problems
5. Have better resolution (will these displays be 1080p, with LCD it would be more likely)
Also, with LCD's being the big thing these days it seems more Apples style to use LCD's. - berad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not about the hardware or software people... the compelling factor to this story is in the DRM. I know, we all hate DRM, but that's what made the iTMS successful... they were the first to break the licensing juggernaut, and I believe they will with this product too, which is why I believe it to be real... specifics may change (Plasma vs LCD) but this would be a totally new product that I think would kick butt. Don't forget, Steve is a MASTER of negotiating outside the box... he did with Sculley, Disney, Apple (when he was with NeXT), countless component suppliers, Samsung, HP, the RIAA, the list goes on and on and on... if this solution is approachable (undeniable with Apple's pedigree), it will sell VERY well.
- theprez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course I don't believe this will happen. But I'll digg just because I would really like it to be true.
- ashdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0any tips on how convince my wife to buy this!
I luv being totally blown away by Steve. He really makes everyone going displaying their "innovations" CES like ID10Ts! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...he had a friend who had a friend...
i stopped right there. - DiamondDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sandwich Man, hu? Sounds like a reputable source...
