- killahwhale, on 01/29/2009, -2/+52I can't wait to show this to my roommate, he just picked up his iPhone today.
- gcnaddict, on 01/29/2009, -23/+62Here are a few questions: Who cares? Isn't it obvious that Apple is testing a new iPhone? That's what companies do; they build new versions of things with new features when they've got competition to beat.
Why is this even news? - ZernanToledo, on 01/29/2009, -7/+33BREAKING: Tech company developing next generation model of popular product.
I wonder if this one will be as delicate as a Fabergé Egg. - bigsteve, on 01/29/2009, -3/+22You realize you're on a tech news site, right? How about we just close down all the comment threads about new technology, because eventually new versions of everything will be released!
- dixhuit, on 01/29/2009, -0/+15I should bloody well hope so too. I'd hate to think they weren't testing it.
- firesights, on 01/29/2009, -8/+22Will it be completely closed to non-authorized development as well? I have an iPhone, and the fact that it has to be jailbroken just to set a custom background is slightly to the extreme side of crazy.
- MrSkills, on 01/29/2009, -0/+11Or more to the point, they'll spend less time playing with it so they don't drain the battery :)
- MrJagil, on 01/29/2009, -1/+12Please! Unibody!
- cbeach, on 01/29/2009, -3/+12If you don't like reading Apple news please untick the relevant category.
Oh, and STFU. Cheers! - kent1146, on 01/29/2009, -5/+14Where did people get the delusion that they have any privilege to freedom on the iPhone/App Store?
It's an closed ecosystem controlled entirely by a corporation. They can do whatever the ***** they want on it. The only "privilege" that people have is to go play in someone else's playground if they don't like the rules. - MrJagil, on 01/29/2009, -1/+9you're a douche.. but a funny one xD
- firesights, on 01/29/2009, -3/+10I think it's "a completely redesigned iPhone" rather than, "the ALL NEW same iPhone with expanded capacity!"
- mmijatov, on 01/29/2009, -1/+8More memory would be a nice to have not a requirement.
Longer battery life would be the biggest and most needed improvement.
Any bump in application performance would be welcome as apps are getting more and more elaborate.
Stereo Bluetooth support also a nice to have. - Izacus, on 01/29/2009, -2/+8Why would anyone use something as power-consuming as Atom processor in a mobile device? The battery life would be just about few hours, not to mention all the heat. Plus, you'd gain almost nothing by using x86 architecture.
There is a reason we have special processors for mobile devices. - mleh, on 01/29/2009, -0/+5Please make it available for non-AT&T customers without having to unlock it.
- anexanhume, on 01/29/2009, -3/+8There's a reason their stuff sells, it's quality hardware and software. It works, and better than most if not all. Then it's not being a fan boy. It's being a smart consumer.
- haentz, on 01/29/2009, -3/+8What? The 3G wont be the last iPhone ever???
- lalalalamppost, on 01/29/2009, -3/+7What I'd want from a next generation iPhone:
- More memory
- Faster processor
- Bluetooth keyboard support
... hmm... not a lot of revolution on my wishlist... - devonkeale, on 01/30/2009, -0/+4iPhone has a 3.5mm jack. You can save files with any number of apps that let you share/transfer over wifi or usb.
Also, if any of the American carriers offered high end Nokias coupled with a contract, we might have a reason to buy one. But not many are going to go out of their way to get an unlocked one for $600.
And seriously, you're going to call iPhone a toy and then list a bunch of toy-like features that you enjoy like video, camera, FM radio (who the ***** cares about that?!), and TV output. Great reasoning.
And who would need to replace a battery these days? My last phone was a motorola with a lithium-ion battery like the iphone uses, and it still holds a charge for 5 days after 3 years of 24/7 use.
Furthermore, I wouldn't say Apple 'nickel and dimes', as I have about 40 apps on my iPhone that were all free and are fantastic. I have never paid for anything in the iTunes store but I still use it to organize my music, iPod, and iPhone because it does all 3 very well.
What you don't understand and probably never will is that Apple products are about usability and simplicity, not about outdated features like FM radio. (I'd much rather have a Pandora app or iPod function any day).
And "you get the picture" probably shouldn't be a numbered reason. Wait, are you 12? Dammit I hope I'm not arguing with a child again... - jmkiii, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3*a
- ssj2119, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3Why wouldnt they be testing a new iPhone, why does there need to be evidence LOL
BREAKING! NINTENDO ARE SET TO CREATE NEW CONSOLE, EVIDENCE SHOWS TESTING/DESIGNING/R&D
:| - jamaph, on 01/29/2009, -2/+5Ahh ***** you all how about copy and paste?
- MacParrot, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3If it was just a software update it would probably be free (you know, just like every other iPhone update?). The Touch apparently is a different matter as there's no re-occuring revenue so they charge some small amount.
I haven't bought either so don't really worry about it. - handheldchimp, on 01/30/2009, -0/+3Have you ever even used an iPhone?
You predict that Apple will be "Bankrupted" in 18 months. Im pretty sure you are 100% wrong and I would be willing to bet my life savings on that.
Also, why is "You get the picture" a reason? You need to explain this one to me as I have never heard of a device having a "You get the picture".
My advice: Go back to 4chan or where ever you came from, because you are obviously talking out of your pre-pubescent ass. - jamaph, on 01/29/2009, -1/+4@gcnaddict
There are such things as investing. Understanding the "product pipeline" is the same as understanding 4th quarter strategy in the super bowl. It can make or break you.
That should answer your question as to why this is "news" - xlr8sd, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3Who is "they"? It says palm in the link
- handheldchimp, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2That's how tech always is though. You want a new processor for your computer. You end up spending, say, $200 on it. However, if you wait a few months you can get an even better processor for the same price. Then if you wait even longer after that you can get an even better, faster processor for the same price as 2 generations ago.
Of course this is just an example, but it is how the tech world works. You can't just wait for newer and better things to come out, because they will always keep improving over time. - erikerikerik, on 01/29/2009, -3/+5how about battery life?
I have an iPhone and LOVE IT. But for every one in the business world I tell them stick with the blackberry for the simple fact it has some kind of battery life. - xlr8sd, on 01/29/2009, -1/+3Don't worry, just because they testing it doesn't mean it's coming out tomorrow. You have at least 6 months to enjoy having the latest iphone
- 1platypus, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2No excuse. If you read digg enough you should no better than that.
- harryterry, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2I'll predict something too...you're a ***** moron
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2I'm waiting for an Android phone to be released on any other carrier besides TMO.
- kb9vgr, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2the Atom processor was designed for mobile internet devices and such
http://www.intel.com/technology/atom/ - zetsurin, on 01/29/2009, -2/+4Who cares? I am buying a Pre.
- jsmithers, on 01/29/2009, -5/+7Less than 3.2 MP camera = MAJOR FAIL. Even that would be scraping the bottom of the barrel. Even Nokia's mid range non-smartphones now have 5MP cameras with a flash. iPhone is a JOKE in the camera department.
Oh, and do we think Apple has figured out what BlueTooth transfer, copy and paste, Flash, and all those other missing things are yet? Again, all of these are old, old, old on Nokias. - jmkiii, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2sucker!
- devonkeale, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2Yeah, I totally saw this coming. Bought an iPhone last week. They'll have a better version next month, just to spite me.
- darkism, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2$500 if you don't qualify for an upgrade...which now includes everyone who used an upgrade to get the 3G.
- dagamer34, on 01/29/2009, -0/+1The important thing isn't that they are working on a new iPhone, but that it's model number is stated as "iPhone 2,1" instead of "iPhone 1,3".
It represents that this new iPhone is a more significant bump compared to the iPhone -> iPhone 3G transition. - MacParrot, on 01/29/2009, -0/+1Most likely just a few new features. 32GB memory or some such. Too many major changes and it has to be submitted. No doubt a new iPhone will eventually come, but not like this
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1Win Mobile sucks in so many ways.
- trollick, on 01/29/2009, -2/+3Nonsense I say! IPhone 3g is the final version, there absolutely nothing to improve, and to imply that there will be a "next" generation is just silly.
- hardeep1singh, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1Get your eyes checked. Though I agree with the second part, its so good its sinful.
- alpha88, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1Who says the phone will look the same?
Aluminum uni-body would be sweet if they can pull that off. - likwidfuzion, on 01/29/2009, -1/+2Jailbreak.
- Quantumay, on 01/29/2009, -2/+3For the few of you that might care, the only reason I chose the HTC Fuze (WM 6.1) over the iPhone are:
1. Copy/Paste
2. Slide out keyboard (if the iPhone had a landscape keyboard this would have sufficed)
3. Customization options
4. Stereo Bluetooth (why doesn't a device that plays music support A2DP is beyond me)
5. Developers don't have to deal with app restrictions (Safari sucks)
The iPhone has a couple of things going for it, but unless Apple changes their stance and allow developers to create whatever they want I doubt I'll be switching. Another thing is the inclusion of basic functions or customization options.
Apple lives in a world where they believe they know what users want and set it up that way without allowing the user to make any changes. The reason they do this is because they think we're dumb and don't know what we're doing or what we want (IMO).
Anyways, good look with the new iPhone Apple. By the time it's released there will be a lot of competition lets see if you can keep your head out the water.
NOTE: I do not hate Apple, just disagree with a couple of their stances. I will however make the switch to an iPhone if they provide all the features I deem necessary.
Also the HTC Fuze has battery life compared to the iPhone, they both suck. - inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Wow, evidence someone at Apple R&D is working
- IOhBot, on 02/01/2009, -0/+1My wish list:
1) Better camera to better enable bar scanning apps, and
2) An inbuilt hardware compass like the G1, so the map software can actually orientate itself to where you are currently pointing. - Mizzike, on 01/29/2009, -0/+1While I agree with you, I'll tell you that it's "news" because gnomey is what some might consider a power user. Any time I see someone with 605 friends and the first two pages worth (30 friends) are "Active now!" indicates to me that the person is a "power user".
