- cell-gfx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44It makes your Mac more visible? Isn't it right in front of you?
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27I just use my brain to tune out distractions.
- knaps, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22I wasn't able to view the screenshot or read the article, but if my interpretation of things are correct, then it's really similar to an effect that can be found in the newest build of the Compiz package for XServer.
So Linux users -- go grab the new packages and make sure you have the 'trailfocus' plugin running with it, and you should get similar results, along with all of the other wonderful goodies that come with Compiz. - LordLucless, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20What, exactly, does "Web 2.0" look like?

- rockintom99, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Web 2.0 is the biggest ***** buzzword ever created. Everyone who uses it deserves a lobotomy.
- ihate2regist, on 10/12/2007, -12/+19windows (and just about every other OS) users just maximize
- wpholmes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Didn't download it, but if it's an application, you can ctrl-click on it's dock icon and choose for it to "Open at Login"
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9You guys talk as if it's impossible to make OS X windows take up the entire screen - It isn't.
They take up exactly the amount of space they need when maximised, no more, no less, but you can always maximise the window yourself. - adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I agree, however, I find myself not maximizing my internet browser more and more.
Liquid layouts are giving me ultra wide columns that are not easy to read. The solution is to have the browser windowed to my desired width. - cell-gfx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8... and it's 'capital', not 'captital'.
- fantastcandy10, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8please don't digg knaps down. its not like he was saying "osx sucks because linux has been doing this forever." he's just pointing out that there is also something like that that is in compiz that is similar.
I didn't know there was a compiz effect like that, and as somebody who occasionally experiments with xgl/compiz, I'm glad he mentioned it. - bornhj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7When you're being a grammar nazi, be sure to have pristine grammar yourself. "Capital Letters" should not have capitals. There shouldn't be two full stops at the end of your sentence.
- sstidman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7"Web 2.0 is the biggest ***** buzzword ever created. Everyone who uses it deserves a lobotomy."
Well, technically, you just used it. Hold still while I position this chisel over your skull... - bhound89, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6its kinda slow when switching windows
- MattElmore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items
to add it as a Login Item - hami, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4While Doodim is a good app, it hasn't been updated since December 2002, isn't Universal Binary and I guess isn't in active development.
An equally good and useful app is Backdrop, which pretty much does the same thing as Doodim and is being actively developed. It also is Universal Binary.
http://www.johnhaney.com/backdrop/ - tcybulski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah. this works great on ubuntu. compiz was a bit of a beyatch to set up with my ati card, but once it's up, there's no reason to upgrade my windows partition to vista.
trailfocus, yall. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4BFD.
My Linux box running XGL/Compiz already does this. Press F12. :p - mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Anyway to start this up on boot?
- macman81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ugh. Anybody else notice that all of these Mac app links are coming from FreeMacWare's selection?
http://freemacware.com - ripcord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@thegenome:
No, this is actually very useful to someone like me. Personally, I find it very difficult/distracting to use an app like Adobe Photoshop where the app tends to have several independent windows open, but lots of "empty" space where windows from other apps "bleed" through. It's sometimes confusing to tell, at a glance, what windows are relevant.
I can view only those windows with Expose, and I can hide other windows with the "Hide Others" option, but those don't work well with my workflow. Expose just slows me down and doesn't really solve the problem well, and the "Hide Other Windows" doesn't work if I have to switch between apps (even to the Finder).
This, on the other hand, integrates with my workflow nearly perfectly, and really solves the problem for me. Much more than eye candy! - funbags, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bet yours is so l33t
- stukdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whenever we run cool new apps like this, it usually ends up on digg and other sites like this. We're just glad to bring the love to the developers.
Our original post does have a download link for the app if the developer's site is still down.
http://www.freemacware.com/doodim/ - bornhj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Did you even look at the link?
- Visceral, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Just OSX and Linux. I don't think Windows has any kind of 3d desktop acceleration that would make use of this.
- Marfanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try FocusLayer
http://homepage.mac.com/castiglione/software/FocusLayer.dmg - Twango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It needs more work.
- digitaldeath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice app.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The only problem I've encountered with these programs is that they conflict with Exposé (Mac). When I view all windows in Exposé the dim background is really just a window (borderless) with a dimmer in it. I don't know maybe I shouldn't complain since it's a freeware app.
- cmyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love the app, but it doesn't work with dual monitors.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5actually, that's a pretty fair explanation.
- MajikalMan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Why would you cover up your whole screen with one or more applications' windows when you can get the same information and more while using less screen real estate? I like being able to use and app, see what's goin on with iTunes, quickly access my desktop, drag and drop stuff in between apps, etc. without constantly having to Cmd-Tab all the time.
- kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Check out FocusLayer, unfortunately only available for PPC (and old too):
http://homepage.mac.com/castiglione/software/FocusLayer.dmg - pyro116, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Too bad this app hasn't been updated since 2002. (VersionTracker picked it up a lot later, MacUpdate has 1.0 listed as being released December 2002). Talk about delayed news. :P
- Visceral, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I have this effect in linux with compiz and it drives me ***** crazy for some reason. Thank God it's easy to turn off.
- cmyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hitting f10 brings darkens everything but the app you were using and scales all the windows of that app so they all fit on your screen... also, it doesn't allow you to keep working in that app, it's only a "window selection" device.
Doodim, will simply darken all the background elements, keeping the app your in brightly lit AND allowing you to keep working within... simple idea... yes, but it's not just eye candy, it increases visibility and is quite practical. COMPLETELY different than exposé (f10). Big difference.
I hope Apple throws something like this into Leopard. - angler8890, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let's not forget the Command+Shift+(2? 4? I changed mine. The one that copies a selected area to the clipboard.) and http://www.ggah.info/sitemap.htm then hitting the space bar to be able to screenshot specific individual windows.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ Which is exactly why floating windows are, and always have been, a stupid idea. And Adobe is a major perpetrator. People tout Adobe apps as if they're examples of good design, when in fact they exemplify ***** design. And what a surprise, they and (former) fellow offender Macromedia come from a Mac-centric heritage.
- gooru, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The only problem is the versiontracker link goes right back to the same site that's just been hit by digg!
- earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4writing, final cut pro, photoshop, illustrator, or any other artistic medium.
programming, email composition, wating a video....
I could think of many cases where this would be nice to emphasize your work. Creative works and writing tend to stick out in my mind of those - tomi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Some people really need to RTFA sometimes.
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -11/+11Let's just say it's like exposé but without moving the windows...
- graystar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I have this running on linux with compiz too. It is very nice, very snappy.
- pilcrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For an app that's designed to reduce screen clutter, it's an odd choice to have it add that color menu bar icon. I'd rather have an option to have it in the hideable dock.
- stuartjmoore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2they only float around when the program that uses them is active
- dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Awesome is a perfectly good word, it's just used incorrectly to oftern. It pretty much means worthy of awe, this can be good or bad.
And sstidman, rockintom99 did not USE the term Web 2.0, he simply refered to it.
Web 2.0 is used in a similar manner to an adjective, and if I were to say "Blue is a stupid name for a colour", I havn't used the adjective blue, I didn't say something that is blue is stupid, I simply refered to the term blue, and indicated I thought said term was stupid. And for the record, I do not actually think that blue is a stupid word, I just couldn't think of a better metaphor right now. - gypsyjoe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5"Web 2.0 is the biggest ***** buzzword ever created." Wrong. Awesome is. Everyone who uses it deserves a lobotomy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why did some dolt mod this down? It's absolutely true.
