- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26"I think I'll wait till the process becomes a little easier (like 5 clicks of the mouse all you need )"
sorry, but a mouse will rarely ever double the capacity of your harddrive, no matter how many times you click - Linh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16The only problem w/ the xbox is it struggles with h/x264 content, depending on how it's encoded. It also doesn't support HD or wireless, and not quite as sleek looking (both physically and interface wise). But yes, much cheaper, and very customizable. But the AppleTV isn't geared towards folks who know how to do that and are willing to. I still think it's $100 too expensive unless it is very easily hacked...
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19And the flag564 desperate "Please hate this thing" FUD telethon continues...
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11^^ The 360 can only view WMV video files.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Within a year, you'll have spent more on electricity alone, not to mention the annoying amount of noise it'll make...
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11There's quite a few problems with the XBMC solution these days:
1) It's getting hard to find brand new Xbox's without getting stuck with a "value pack" that is going to set you back $150-$175
2) Getting a used Xbox is pretty risky since you won't know the condition of the DVD drive. (disk read errors are VERY common)
3) A soft mod is going to cost you about $30 for the memory card, hard mod probably $75-$100
4) You have to buy a DVD remote, HD video output cable -- about $30
5) You may need the wireless adapter which costs about $100 and only does 11B/G
6) You would need to buy a larger compactly hard drive if you want to locally store video on the xbox (optional, $60+)
7) No real support for HD. (yes it out puts in HD but it can't keep up with high bitrate video files)
Don't get me wrong, I love XMBC and I used it religiously for 3 years but it's day has passed. If the AppleTV can be further tweaked to support new codecs and features it will be a steal at $300 - Yoshi39, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10gizmodo did this with a 120gb drive yesterday http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/diy-apple-tv-hard-drive-upgraded-to-120gb-246567.php
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Xbox can't output HD.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yeah, gee, being able to install software and upgrade the hardware really sucks... Apple has screwed us again! Why can't they invest half their resources building worthless protection mechanisms to discourage this type of behavior and save us from ourselves, like Microsoft does?
- bjdraw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They claimed to do it, but didn't post a how to cause it only survived one reboot.
After the second the box went south.
There is a 400MB unknown partition on the Apple TV that isn't easy to copy or duplicate, but is obviously necessary. - Oakenshield, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14"While there is little doubt that this will void our warranty, it is worth it isn't it?"
Worth it until it goes all explody, you take it to an Apple Store/Authorized Reseller for service, and they tell you to go jump in the river. You'll stomp, cry, demand to talk to a manager, and your Lexus driving suburban ass will be escorted out by security. Then you'll blog about how horrible Apple's service is, and how you feel betrayed by a company you used to love. Ultimately, the Attorney General and Better Business Bureau will tell you to go to a very warm place, and then.....THEN the fun really starts. Better not defy that restraining order, Slappy.
Not that I have any idea what I'm talking about. - rubberjabber, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@ marnag
XBMC can output HD but only at 720p.
http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/info_faq.htm#HDTV - hawkmucci, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I really wish Apple TV had PVR functionality. it seems that the only media apple wants you to watch is that which is bought through itunes. what are people doing to capture their own shows? bittorrent?
- SoxFanNH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Or just buy a DVD player with a USB port and use your USB stick. Easy and a hell of a lot cheaper. The Phillips DVP5960 is awesome, plays Divx and Xvid just fine and no need to go through all these hoops...
- kelly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I have tons of home movies (and web Pr0n) that I transfered to it. It works great.
- grubesteak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Form factor/size. This would be perfect for a little kiosk.
- kelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You mean... like the mac mini?
- bjdraw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You don't, I drive and Infiniti, not a lexus. Lexus doesn't make a sporty coupe. ;)
- kelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nope.
Its solely limited to the size of the drive. - kelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can do both.... stream content and transfer content.
- beingme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2isn't the slingbox design to stream tv to your computer while appletv is made for streaming videos and music to your television?
and i thought since you can stream media to your television wouldn't the hard drive space be irrelevant? or do you have to upload it to the hard drive first before you can watch the video? - aroundtheblock, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2if that thing had a network card i'd be sold
- dlsspy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@hawkmucci
So far, the only movie I've watched on mine is Resident Evil (which I'd ripped from DVD a while back). I've also watched a few episodes of Ask a Ninja and some comedy central podcast stuff. But yeah, I watched a Forum video I bought from iTMS (gift card). That works well, too.
While I do have videos I can't watch yet, dropping in some new codecs doesn't seem like that big of a deal, so I'll probably get around to that later today. - dietersmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It depends on what you feel like doing. There are a lot of alternatives. You can use an xbox, as murdats has said, or you can also make a mythTV box if you have a spare PC lying around, and get a TV tuner card
- SoxFanNH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well you can use an external hard drive, which would be much bigger than the Apple TV and just as easy to work with (it isn't hard to unplug it from the computer and put it in the DVD drive...)
Why bother voiding the warranty in the 1st place. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"You mean... like the mac mini?"
Why do you think they raised the price of the Mac Mini? It was to pave way for this device. - grubesteak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I apologize if I missed this somewhere, but can't you just reformat the hard drive and put anything you want on it?
For $300, it would be a neat little computer, even it it's only used for surfing the internet for the most part (or in my case, Digg). - MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't there limitations as to how much you can sync up to your appletv, hence making the hard drive size irrelevant?

http://netgear.com/Products/Entertainment/DigitalMediaPlayers/EVA8000.aspx - supersaw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I just have an old p4 with 1gig of ram running 802.11g tucked away behind my 42" LCD, cost me about $50 since the pc was just sitting there doing nothing all it needed was a wireless card. HD stuff streams beautifully over my 108mbp wireless and if my pc ever goes FUBAR i always have a spare box to surf the net or do anything else on.
- form3hide, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Awesome point, wiseweasel. No one ever thinks about those things.
- JennyWMR, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4
Is there any cheaper alternatives than appletv?
Very neat technology indeed. - LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@deadbaby:
Used xbox: $50-75
Modchip: $40-60
Cables/remote: $30
That's all you need. Hook it up via ethernet, stream all of the content via NAS or SMB share and your set. Sure it can't play 720/1080 content, but it will do hi-def widescreen content at 540p upscaled, which looks great. Don't try to blow it out of proportion. - form3hide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I believe you're correct, or at least that's what I read on other forums.
Someone correct us. - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5"it seems that the only media apple wants you to watch is that which is bought through itunes."
You are coming to a sad realization. Cancel or Allow? - electricarc89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Here's a novel idea: Dump at Apple garbage and build yourself a decent media PC. Unless of course, you like being limited to DRM-infected Itunes crap.
- dubiousmike, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1the funny thing is that while that netgear unit is requires windows, they draw a power mac G5 in the illustration of what it is hooked up to.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the apply tv basically doing what any iPod Video should do with in a dock hooked up to a tv? except, perhaps the whole network thing. but seriously, it just seems like iPod video should be able to do all of this - drop it in the apple dock, and have 80 gigs of your pictures, music and videos - and the little apple remote - a menu SHOULD pop up on the screen like this one.. if you ask me, apple just dosent allow the ipod to do this, to get this to market - and seems mighty pointless to me.
- itsme92, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3@ImTheDarkcyde
Are you sure about that? I remember when I ordered a Dell desktop from Dell.com back in 2002 all I had to do was click once, and the hard drive magically increased from 30GB to 120GB. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2guess the age old antage rings true
TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE !!! - gbalaji, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0cool
- tomblag, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Once again its the xbox vs the apples. There are atm only a couple ways to get hd res to tvs from pcs(or pcish devices). Guess what the xbox isnt included.
- esquire360, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0one issue, nothing else can play my iTunes Songs or video's... very lame. (i know i bought them so it's my fault for locking in to the iTunes frame work) so one reason many will go with iTV. (i know its not iTv just wanted to call it that)
i think i covered all my bases - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7an original xbox, will save you a heap of money and give you a lot more flexibility
as far as neat technology, neat use (except in the limited appletv use) but old technology - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Upgrade the Xbox's CPU. It's a PITA, but it's possible, and a damn site cheaper than buying an Apple TV.
The Apple TV's a good alternative for the non-geeks among us (Well, probably not on Digg, but anyway) though. - easy4lif, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1its amazing how many ***** xbox 360 users there are on the apple TV topic and how they try to compare the xbox to Apple TV.
the xbox 360 is NOT like the apple TV.
the Apple TV is NOT like the Xbox 360 - Muchocoffee, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Keep up the work, Engadget. These Apple TV mods really get my dick hard.
- ReallyChili, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4What a lame product if this many DYI upgrades are already needed/widely reported.
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Get an xbox 360 for even more functionality. Or a slingbox. Those are cheaper than the apple tv but will play absolutely any format. Will even stream internet video. A far better device than the apple tv.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1So someone will pony up 300.00 just to reformat the HD and use it as a regular PC?
Why not just save up 200.00 dollars and buy a full computer? -
