- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+235It should be noted that Elton John is a corporate spokesman for XM radio.
- jpyun, on 10/12/2007, -4/+189Someone tell him that you can put an entire album on an iPod. Several, even.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+158Yes, Elton John. Those iPods sure are silly.

@Haohmaru
I think it was one of those XM Radios. - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+111If an iPod is "Silly," what do you call a "serious musician" who performs onstage dressed in a giant Donald Duck suit?

Some musicians should only be allowed to sing, and not talk. - thedez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+83Old people are funny sometimes.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -7/+70...gay
(i couldn't help myself) - nathos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+53Apparently Magnus doesn't realize you can rip a CD to a Lossless codec for playback on your iPod.
- shadgenki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+39I really don't expect Elton John to be up on the most current technology.
- edge001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41i think his "only buying/listening to one song" statement would be a better arguement against XM. XM you usually only get one song at a time from a specific artist - iPod you can buy/listen to an entire albulm much easier.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37Apparently, Elton is not selling a lot of full albums on the iTunes store. Or perhaps he's been listening to too much FUD from industry execs.
- ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39They have internet access at the Westboro Baptist Church?
- op12, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33And CD's never come with free DRM?
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=CD+DRM - onestep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Yea.. they are silly.. especially if you are a spokesman for the XM To go... Like he is.
- Lacero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Having to pay for filler tracks is even sillier. :/
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30Wait, Elton is GAY??? Stop the presses, hold the phone...
;-) - AstroPHX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30@TiCL
Are you disappointed that Sir John isn't black, too? If he was, you could make some sort of sly remark about him swinging from his "***** Tree" like a monkey.
Pardon my French, but you're an *****. - winnch, on 10/12/2007, -11/+35I definitely hate that about iPods. I bought one last week. It only fit 9 tracks of a 10-track CD! Worthless technology.
- merr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24It should be noted that bitrate doesn't translate directly to quality across different compression schemes.
- mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Ironicly, Elton John hasn't made a whole album of full material worth listening to in 30 years.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Oh, those iPods sure are silly. I mean, why would you want to have every single song that an artist has sung in a tiny player, when you could lug around a discman and a bag full of CDs?
Of course, when you're rich and famous you don't need an iPod... your portable music player is a limo. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23I swear to god you're retarded.
It's called sarcasm. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Um...I believe he was being sarcastic... I know it's hard to tell without sarcastic tags surrounding it.
- jbrevik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Of course he buys the artists work. He has millions of dollars.
- Clearz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19"I really don't expect Elton John to be up on the most current technology."
Well is it too much to ask for someone who works in the music industry to keep up to date on portable music player technology when it only changes once every decade.
Tapes - 80s, Cd's - 90s, Mp3s - 00s.
That's 3 different technology's in the last 30 years. So hard to learn! Maybe poor Elton has smoked one to many joints. - autoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21I don't have a silly Elton. I like to go download the whole artist's work.
- iNoles, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Aye, who want t' buy Silly Xm Radio? A pence for an old man o'de sea?
- DealCracker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Some things never change...
2006:
On Tuesday's Tonight Show, Elton John told Jay Leno that he thinks iPods are "silly" and that he would prefer to buy a CD so he can listen to an entire album at a time: "I don't have a silly iPod. I like to go buy the whole artist's work..."
1986
On Tuesday's Tonight Show, Elton John told guest host Garry Shandling that he thinks CD Players are "silly" and that he would prefer to buy a phonograph so he can listen to half of the album at a time: "I don't have a silly CD Player. I like to go buy the album with the big cover"
1976
On Tuesday's Tonight Show, Elton John told Johny Carson that he thinks Cassette Players are "silly" and that he would prefer to buy an 8-track so he can listen to the album continuously over and over again with only a small popping sound when the player changes tracks. "I don't have a silly cassette player. I like to go buy the 8-track, pop it in my tape deck and go cruising with my wife!"
Well maybe some things have changed... - smokeyghetto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18It should also be noted that putting a pile of cocaine equivalent to the size of the tallest mountain up your nose is Silly too.
Just to reiterate http://www.poster.net/john-elton/john-elton-photo-elton-john-6226598.jpg
Elton has no say in what is considered silly. - cogen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17@Haohmaru
No, that was a portable XM player. I thought the same thing at first, actually. - neoncricket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"No, that was a portable XM player. I thought the same thing at first, actually."
Although that doesn't really alleviate his criticism. If the iPod is silly because he can't listen to an entire album at a time (ha ha), XM radio doesn't fix that for him.
edit: edge001, you beat me to it. - irbdavid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Some "musicians" shouldn't be allowed to sing either. Most, probably.
- archurban, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18he is not listen to music on-the-go. he's still living in 20th century. so sad. and he doesn't know that purchase artist work (album) in itunes store is the same as in the street shop.
- EyeoftheMind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13NO YOU'RE SILLY ELTON.
- puggy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14This is clearly taken out of context. Yes, he used the word "silly" but that's not what he meant by that. If you watched the whole interview, he clearly implies that technology is just not his thing and he has nothing against it. He also mentioned that he doesn't have a computer.
- Easty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Damn that iPod and its capacity of only 8 tracks.
- inturnaround, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14To be fair, as a man who dressed up as Donald Duck on stage, and who wrote songs for a cartoon warthog, he does know from silly.
- thewaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"Its lonely out in space" - elton john
- jstevewhite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Apparently magnus isn't aware that most judges award 128kb/s AAC the "Indistinguishable from source" rating, and nearly all give that rating to 192kbit AAC.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Twango can you say that again? I couldn't hear your muffled comment because your nose is so far up Elton John's ass.
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@Magnus: I used to think the same thing you did. A CD's bitrate is
bits per sample X samples per second X channels =
16 x 44,100 x 2 = ~1.4megabits per second
and a common "high-quality" mp3 is 256kilobits/second. But you can't make that comparison just like you cannot compare an uncompressed BMP to a Quality=99 jpeg.
MP3s are compression on-the-fly, and the mp3 file's size is not an indicator of the actual data in the file; just like a JPEG of a few hundred k in size can actually contain megabytes of compressed data. - HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12You know what... You can't pay people to say stuff this funny!
- TheXeno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8To Elton: "Make an album worth of songs worthy enough to buy and people will buy a *whole* album."
I hate buying what I don't like. - SlaunchaMan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Damn, dude.
- jon3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@Magnus
Yeah, because that tiny barely perceptable loss in quality really matters when I'm listening to the music on ear buds made in China for probably somewhere around $0.80.
Nice try.
EDIT: Oh, and "average user" != "average digg user" - we all know CD != MP3. But I will contend that if I played both a CD and a high quality MP3 or AAC through earbuds, or *****, a $10,000 stereo that - YOU - couldn't tell the difference. - dholm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I've seen several articles declaring the end of the album format due to the iPod's success. Among most of my friends, that's probably true.
Now, I personally find the iPod in no way inhibits my musical pretentiousness. I still purchase and listen to complete albums, and my usual reply when my friends note that I have never taken the time to learn how to use the shuffle feature in the last 3 years has become a catchphrase when they wish to mock me for my snobbery: "I prefer to listen to the music in the context the artist originally intended."
And it's a hell of a lot more convenient than carrying a binder with a couple hundred CDs in it, Elton. - TheKingInYellow, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14old people are funny ALL of the time...what are you talking about?
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wow. 200 word blog post with FIFTEEN ads. I guess someone just made some pageview bucks from this digg.
- thewaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6because the tracks are taken out of their original context of album form. maybe he thinks his own albums dont apply?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7And again... he's a spokesman for XM....so your take on the comment is also wrong.
