- Telekenesis, on 11/27/2008, -8/+63Sorry, but Mac does not signify rebelling against the status quo, how naive.
Apple are control freaks, they are like capitalist communists...best of both worlds is how they like. They love the money on the one end they love the control on the other end. - sab0tage, on 11/27/2008, -4/+39Who are they trying to kid? Apple is the antithesis of "open".
- matthekc, on 11/27/2008, -15/+48***** Apple!
- MrAldo, on 11/27/2008, -4/+28Did I miss the memo that Apple is open?
In reality, Apple is actually a lot more "closed" then Microsoft... I know this doesn't exactly have to do with OS's but you cannot install Mac OS on just any computer, you can with Windows... - ryanmsean, on 11/27/2008, -2/+23Apple is more totalitarian than Microsoft and I find their 1984 commercial ironic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYecfV3ubP8
If you want true openness you are going to have to go with Linux, it has no judgements on hardware, and software can be compiled and configured to your liking. - mitch37, on 11/27/2008, -8/+27Why does Apple try so hard to lock the iPod down from third party music players. ***** Apple!
- puma, on 11/26/2008, -6/+25This will go no where on digg;)
- CoreyTamas, on 11/27/2008, -2/+20Ahhh, my friend. Of course it doesn't. The point isn't that Apple is about breaking away from the mainstream... only that people believe it is. That's what sells iMacs and iPhones.
- vishna, on 11/27/2008, -0/+17If this article ever makes to Diggnation I see Kevin Rose saying something like... "I don't understand what these people are bashing about, Apple is a company that can run their own business and if you don't like their products just don't buy them."
- Telekenesis, on 11/27/2008, -2/+18Exactly, glad to see you know that.
If Apple controlled the world it would probably be like the world in Mirror`s Edge - glossy and nice, but a police state. - RogerStrong, on 11/27/2008, -1/+16It's like back in the 1980s, when a record company and a local radio station held a (boy toy era) Madonna look-alike contest. A reported waded into the crowd of a hundred Madonna look-alikes in bangles, black lace and bad makeup, and asked one why they dressed that way.
The answer: "Because we want to express our individuality!" - feliks2, on 11/27/2008, -2/+14please be sarcasm please be sarcasm please be sarcasm
- slowth, on 11/27/2008, -1/+12What really flips my lid is when Mr. Jobs states that music and DRM are incompatible, but then Apple encrypts the ipod so only itunes can decrypt it. Please, make up your mind.
- cdigioia, on 11/27/2008, -0/+10He has, his conclusion was: money
- ryanmsean, on 11/27/2008, -4/+14Except for the fact that Apple's software was open source and is now proprietary.. you can't take their code and recompile it for your processor which is one of the main benefits of open source.
Microsoft does more work on getting hardware to work with their systems.
Locking down software AND hardware is not for me. - Chris_F, on 11/27/2008, -4/+14Shocking. Would have never expected this kind of behavior from Apple. Surly they are different then the rest, surly they have the best intentions in mind and customers rights.
- vishna, on 11/27/2008, -0/+10What if i bought iPod before this db encryption was introduced ...and what if was using Ubuntu to sync my music? Will they give me my money back?
- slowth, on 11/27/2008, -1/+11and don't call me Surly!
- Headinawheel, on 11/27/2008, -1/+11PLEASE be sarcasm...
- eclectro, on 11/27/2008, -4/+13The problem is that while everyone on digg understands this, the unwashed sheeples continue to blindly give their money to the fruity computer company.
- strangewill, on 11/27/2008, -0/+9Or they could do like decent developers do and release an interface to prevent such issues.
Alas, what am I thinking, cooperation and true progression? From Apple? Nah. - kerouac906, on 11/27/2008, -2/+11How can one not like the EFF? Wait until you get hit with a baseless 'piracy' claim someday, who'll have your back then?
- Kerrigore, on 11/27/2008, -3/+11Hopefully one day soon the rest of the labels will relent and allow all iTunes music to be DRM-free, then maybe we can end this nonsense once and for all.
- CoreyTamas, on 11/27/2008, -4/+12One reason Linux and open-source users tend to like Mac OS X is because you can open a terminal and sudo up a storm. To hardcore *nix guys, this is the bread and butter of computing... so it's something they can relate to.
There's obviously more to it than that (including some legitimate questions about whether they really DO love Macs all that much), but I know a lot of guys who jumped on Mac OS X with both feet because they could do real command-line stuff. - aubinhick990, on 11/27/2008, -3/+11Me neither.
- Barackalypse, on 11/27/2008, -2/+10Since when is buying something hip, trendy, stylish, and overpriced for the functionality you get rebelling against the status quo? In a world gone brand crazy buying something cheap, plain, and utilitarian is rebelling.
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -1/+9If only there were some way to search for information on the internet...
- kerouac906, on 11/27/2008, -3/+11Maybe Mac users are rebelling against the status quo of free speech?
- slowth, on 11/27/2008, -0/+7While I completely agree, this article is not about DRM and music files, it's about encrypting the ipod database so that only itunes can read and write to the device.
- JohnFlux, on 11/27/2008, -1/+8It closes the source code and platform to protect its users? Wow, you actually believe that??
- TheBuzzKiller, on 11/27/2008, -5/+11meh ... it's over-priced and for the money, you'd expect better specs ... kinda pretty if you're into that iRobot look though.
- CoreyTamas, on 11/27/2008, -3/+9"If Apple controlled the world it would probably be like the world in Mirror`s Edge - glossy and nice, but a police state."
I think that's going a little far. But yes, I think Apple sells the sizzle, not the steak. - brundlefly76, on 11/27/2008, -1/+7I have been a Windows and Linux user forever and now have 2 Macs for iPhone development.
Seriously I have no idea what people are talking about when they say the Mac is better, its just another OS which only runs on ridiculously expensive hardware. - dogstylee, on 11/27/2008, -0/+6Breaking away from the mainstream by owning an iPod which everyone else owns.
Apple fans are the goths of the tech world; they all try to individualize by dressing the same. - starf, on 11/27/2008, -0/+6You can use both iTunes and iPods with DRM-free music without paying for the music.
The issue at hand is that you cannot use any program other than itunes to sync your ipod because of the db checksum. - PillCosby, on 11/27/2008, -1/+7China.
- cplusplus, on 11/27/2008, -0/+5They know that iPods are a gateway to Mac. Lots of people in recent years have bought an iPod then a Mac. They like that.
- strangewill, on 11/27/2008, -1/+6I'm sorry, but how can open source developers really like developing for OSX? I've been trying to crack into their market (in vein), mainly because I'm not willing to put down $900+ so I can program for them for free (or program for 4% of the market _TOPS_ for maybe pay if the product is successful).
I mean we're not even allowed to run virtual machines of OSX, Apple is all grubby grubby with VMWare, and of course VMWare wont be helping us any time soon to get OSX working on a VM...
You got the OSx86 project of course... alas it's still technically in violation of Apple's EULA....
If anything Apple actively spits in the face of open source development, and there's an alarming amount of people out there that say "thank you sir, I'll continue writing software for free to help promote your sales...". - rgersmrk, on 11/27/2008, -2/+7Putting the word "open" and "Apple" in the same sentence is laughable at best.
- geoken, on 11/27/2008, -0/+5How can third party software destroy your ipod when it's only ability is to send songs to said device?
- geoken, on 11/27/2008, -0/+5Like XMLHttpRequest?
Microsoft basically invented AJAX. Apple releases a lot of stuff as open source, but for the most part they're small pieces of the puzzle and totally useless to anyone unless they replicate other core areas of the OS (which would obviously be instantly buried by lawyers).
It would be like Digg claiming their open source because they release the code that grabs the top stories in the last 24 hours or some other non-fundamental piece of code. That code alone is useless. - raydeen, on 11/27/2008, -4/+9At one time I would have agreed about the hardware. Anymore it's no more reliable than anything offered by the other computer manufacturers. In some cases it's worse. I've gone through two hard drives on my work MacBook in two years. Both times, they just died while the machine was sitting on my desk. That's not Apple's fault though. They didn't manufacture the hard drive but at the same time refused to acknowledge the problems with the hard drives they were using. Same goes for their batteries. The MacBook batteries where I work have been absolute crap. Will Apple replace them? Not free of charge, even when the battery in question has less then 40 recharge cycles and is less than a year old. Apple sucks. News at eleven.
- Recidivus, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4(re)Read the article, it has nothing to do with DRM on the music.
- srg13, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4"-Much of the core OS X code (though not the kernel) is under the Apple Public License since they used GCC Obj-C compiling code in it"
http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/10.5. ...
Source code to the XNU/Mach kernel. You'll need a Apple developer account and to accept the license. - nakedcellist, on 11/27/2008, -1/+5I like a lot of the apple products, I use a macbook and an iphone, I like os X very much and I love logic studio, final cut studio etc. But I am a bit torn, because I hate a lot of the repressive things that apple is doing at the moment, like cracking down on the ipodhash project, using drm, limiting what you can install on your iphone etc. I find this a worrying trend. Of course, there are some ways around them, I jailbroke my iphone, I do not buy any drm content and I do not mind using itunes, but I find these developments.. disturbing..
- polyp2000, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4I agree ... Although I'm a long-term Linux person , I've go back way before it was usable. Back in the day ~ System 7 ? and Windows 9x, I kinda like even though i really didn't like windows much back then (having had fun with Amiga OS at home , and Unix based OSes at Uni) I generally chose that over Mac OS because it seemed much more "Open" (In those days - to me - that meant it was easier to tweak and understand under the hood).
By the time OSX came along I was already a Linux convert - but I was able to appreciate the change , Here was a new OS with its roots based on Unix and having an open-source kernel (based on BSD). It definitely changed my old allegiances. However over the years I have realized that Apple , as you say - is more closed than Microsoft. They are quite happy to cherry pick stuff from the Open Source community , yet increasingly less and less prepared to give back. And breathing down the neck of the very community that provided some of the technologies for their shiny new OS , actively trying to prevent them from creating tools to assist using THEIR HARDWARE with platforms they don't support?
This just stinks - They had me for a while ... I've been really tempted to get a Mac .
But the reasons to do so are pretty thin on the ground. I'm a developer. If I had a mac , the chances are I'd be running most of the same tools as I do on Ubuntu.
N. - mrBitch, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4@cplusplus RE: " iPods are a gateway to Mac. Lots of people in recent years have bought an iPod then a Mac. They like that. "
Actually for me it was the other way around.
I have been using Ubuntu for years and so was willing to try a *nix based OS that ALSO has 3rd party commercial apps (which Linux lacks).
So because Ubuntu worked so well compared to Windows, I bought a MacBook Pro over a year ago.
The MacBook and OS X worked so well that I actually reversed my opinion that iPods were no better than any other mp3 player... Bought an iPod Touch and can't believe how damn GOOD that little device is.
So my "gateway" was originally Ubuntu, then a MacBook, and then finally... an iPod. - Psych77, on 11/27/2008, -1/+5Not quite, but nice try. It's more to do with making money from selling the music.
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4The only reason I can think that someone would digg this post down is they are drinking the Apple Koolaid. especially since no one has replied with an intelligent counterpoint.
- node3, on 11/27/2008, -1/+5Only in a binary world of black and white, instead of our world of many shades of gray.
In fact, I'd wager every capitalist is a bit communist, and vice versa, to varying degrees. Just look at the 'capitalists' at AIG et al., begging at the public trough. Or even reputable companies like Lockheed Martin that depend on public projects. -
