- chipwar, on 10/10/2007, -7/+50Now I can put my Quad Xeon with 16 gigs of RAM to use beyond smokin' games of solitaire.
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/10/2007, -7/+36We'd have more Mac games if developers actually started using open APIs like OpenGL instead of DirectX. That's the only reason there are so few native Mac games, and even these games aren't actually OS X native. It's basically just like running a game through WINE.
A lot of OpenGL games actually make it to the OS X platform. - wality, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29Harry Potter video game? That seals it, I'm switching.
- Vicujozobenaxod, on 10/10/2007, -13/+40And all around the world, Mac owners will get raped by die-hard PC gamers....
- aten, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25*****, i have macbook "Note: This game does not support the GMA950 integrated graphics"
God Damn It. - kaffein, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22Ah great, now Mac gamers can experience the joy of games without widescreen support like (BF2142) on a mac, most of which have widescreens!
Enjoy that 4:3 resolution on your 16:10 monitor! I doubt they changed this for the mac ports, but if they did enjoy it cause PC gamers get reamed.
(Just an FYI, their excuse for not having widescreen support was "We consider wide screens an advantage." Oh and a better, video card, Sound Card, Mouse or just having a better system in general isn't??) - Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18If Apple put real video cards in Macs, maybe this would make sense.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Don't buy a Civic and then get mad when a Porsche owns you in a race.
- primesucka, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15What, no octo-core? You puss!
- Phil13, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16I don't know why you are getting dugg down, it's the simple truth.
These games from EA are using Cider, which is essentially the same exact thing as WINE. When games are made in OpenGL from the beginning, they do have an easier time bringing it over.
Need more companies like Epic Games and Blizzard who actually give a ***** about other platforms. - dyranios2, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17Also do you think this will work on my intel mac? :S
- wordsofwisedumb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12No, it looks like the people who wanted Macs before they were cool are left behind just waiting to upgrade...
- e808, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13I hope it was for a different reason than this article.
- aussieNickuss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Well....what did you expect?
- Stikes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I feel bad that EA didn't also/instead make Battlefield 2 compatible.
BF2 > BF2142 - Twee, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Too bad the iMac G5 uses a slot-loading disc drive, so there is no cd tray to grasp.
- cruxed, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12It's out. wakey wakey.
- Timan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Hint... Milking every series they own...
- OAKsider, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12$40-50 for year-old games, that's some elite Mac pricing.
- Ireland, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Yeah cause you will die :P
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Yeah, he was looking at a picture of Steve Jobs!
- Bytor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Aren't these just packed up with some converter like wine, they are not actually coded for Mac. It would be interesting to see how much slower they are as a result.
- mynameisjesse, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Ummm...I hope you didn't expect your Macbook to play any game with decent graphics.
- dyranios2, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9hahahahaha wtf
- ncaauwe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Ain't it the truth...God I love you, Blizzard.
- wordsofwisedumb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Would you pay for it again to play it on an X-Box? I'm not trolling or anything, I really want to know.
- jefree, on 10/10/2007, -11/+16I want more Mac games! I hope this is a trend that will continue.
- primesucka, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7EA makes ***** games, they can keep them for all I care.
- superal1394, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I would Jizz if Valve released Steam on OSX w/ full cataloge natively running
- miniboss, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Absolutely amazing. There's 50 stories about EA failing to deliver their promise because Madden and Tiger are delayed and none make any noise around here. Then somebody spitshines a news turd and bang, front page.
C'mon Digg. Not every frontpage story has to be one with a positive spin. - yabos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Uh yes they are. It's an implementation of DIrect3D APIs that call native OpenGL libraries. Your comment is like saying C++ isn't native because it's an abstraction over assembly.
- aten, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I was on the hope that i could PLAY them, as long as they run at min. settings i am fine...
- WillyWonka, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4To be fair, often when people use openGL they also wind up using DirectX for other things as well like DirectInput for handling the joysticks and the other modules for audio and what not. DirectX isn't just 3D graphics.
- Weebs43, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5If it's that large of an issue, allower players with a 4:3 monitor to play in widescreen mode at a smaller resolution. Just like how we watch widescreen movies on our 4:3 TV's. Problem solved.
- TiMMY8765, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5also, buying out a successful company to remake the same game over and over again. (battlefield)
- Kappa00, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If it were up to blizzard, then you could play on both Mac and PC using one cd or dvd.
- Kratisto, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Nintendo isn't evil because they're still idealistic. I hate them for it sometimes (god damnit, make the Wii as powerful as the other two and get some good third part support instead of this "Everyone is now a gamer" mentality).
- timeshifter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I was seriously looking in to getting the new 24" aluminum iMac until I learned about it's ***** graphics. From what I can tell it won't run UT2004 any better than my Dell with a Nvidia 6800 card. And, it won't be upgradeable either. No, I'm not going to buy a $2500 Mac Pro.
If Apple was really serious about gaming then there'd be more graphics options available. - EmperorAwesome, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4They're the archetype all the other publishers watch, and they set as good an example as that one uncle who sold pot outside the high school. Creativity is the enemy of their steady sales. The "MTV" treatment the video game industry has gotten since the release of the PS2 can be largely attributed to them.
- nizam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3for those of you complaining about the intel gma 950 issue, that damn thing can't even support hardware transform and lighting. that right there cuts off its ability to play a majority of games.
- anarchy99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3this is such crap there not native there running in cider which is a mac implentation of cedegra
if you want you can make your own games using might and magic V (or compile cedegra source which is free)
i made ea mac lineup before ea released it just cause they pissed me off pretending to support macs
heres how using need for speed carbon as a example:
1) you need and NFS Installed with no-cd Crack
2) download Heroes of Might of Magic 5 for osx
3) apply crack on it and see if is running (if it does your good to go)
4) Do show package contents on the heroes app and go to "Contents/Resources/trnasgamming/c_drive/Program Files/" and put there Your Need For Speed installed game
5) Copy this dlls from windows into c_drive/windows/system32/: d3d9_24.dll to d3d9_32.dll (you can find this dlls on the web too)
6) Open Info.plist from Contents folder and change Cedega Game dir and Name to:
CedegaGameDir
c:Program FilesElectronic ArtsNeed for Speed Most Wanted
CedegaGameName
c:Program FilesElectronic ArtsNeed for Speed Most Wantedspeed.exe - Weebs43, on 10/10/2007, -1/+42.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB DDR2 667MHz RAM, 160GB 5400RPM HDD, 8x DVD-DL drive, 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT.
Sounds like a pretty damn good gaming laptop to me. Hell, I have the old version of the MacBook Pro with the 128MB X1600 and I still get awsome frame rates on all my games, even on Counter-Strike: Source in CrossOver. - yabos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So then let those people buy a new monitor if they want the wider viewing angle. I don't see the point of forcing everyone to use 4:3 when all new monitors are wide screen. The gamers are spending hundreds on their computer and video card but they don't want to spend money to get a good monitor?
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4And that very few of them are actually girls.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4*****.
- Hexis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Remember DOOM? That was developed on NeXT, which is what we call OSX these days. I suspect id will show us mac gamers some love.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No, and even if they did work on PPC they would run slow as hell.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Cider has problems with the GMA, even if the chip could handle it, which in some cases it can (just not very well), Cider's conflicts with the GMA too much.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Yo! MTV Raps!
