- GruffPelt, on 10/11/2007, -5/+71Kevin Miller: "I don’t believe it’s a Cisco problem in any way, shape or form."
Umm, nice troubleshooting there, Kev. - econoar, on 10/11/2007, -3/+50It was probably due to their upgrade to 3D Mailbox
- dvgrhl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+38In a related story, the iPhone has been kicked off of the lacrosse team.
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -3/+39what is funny is guys like Kevin Miller aren't necessarily iPhone or Apple haters (although I'm sure the Mac press will demonize him as such).
He's worse..the stereotypical IT guy who immediately gives out an authoritative and declarative "diagnosis" on what the "problem" is...with the smug self assurance that no one else in the vicinity knows ***** about "the computer stuff" and just meekly goes along with it. Have to put up a strong front, right? :p
Oh, and a bonus Digg that is amusing:
http://digg.com/apple/Macworld_tries_to_cover_up_for_Apple_iPhone_may_not_be_cause_of_Duke - ButisitArt, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26Yet another reminder of how Internet news is a double edged sword. Stories are reported on even without all the facts. By then the damage is done. Just like the Engadget story about the iPhone not shipping on time. That killed Apple stock the moment it broke. Engadget reported it first, and the story was false. So every time someone makes a claim ... Oh our network went down ...it's iPhone's fault. Another example of shooting your mouth off without all the facts.
- iplayyouandme, on 10/11/2007, -23/+46Whahahahahahahahaha... A lot of iPhone haters eating CROW tonight!
- Aard88, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22The Duke community has a proud history of falsely accusing the easiest target.
- mdavis, on 10/11/2007, -6/+21Of course an IT guy will blame Apple. Thats the reason most of them are absolutely vigilant about keeping anything other than Windows off their networks-they're too stupid to know better.
- firedude328, on 10/11/2007, -7/+21Duke Sucks
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/11/2007, -10/+23In a better world the news would be more along the lines of: due to recent public statements that showcased there incompetents the administrative I.T. staff has been let go from Duke University. Instead they will probably get a bonus for making national news.
- nfxmedia, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14I wouldn't call that an upgrade.
- ronin510, on 10/11/2007, -7/+16Good ole Duke. Jumping to conclusions a bit too early again. At least this time it didn't hurt 3 innocent young men.
- judicar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8He might as well start wearing a t-shirt with that phrase on it.
- charlesray, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Oh thank God. I was so worried. It kept me all night just thinking, what could this mean for Apple's future? It was DEVASTATING.
- them3nace, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10I just have to point out that your comment for a "better world" where people are let go for making mistakes, is accompanied by your spelling mistakes.
- SgtBlue, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12There's just a bit of a difference between "a mistake" and "announcing false information without any measure of empirical confirmation in an unnecessary public statement, probably in hopes of generating loads of bad Apple press (which it did)." The guy wasn't even the CIO, just some random Duke employee on the IT staff who (obviously) isn't all that knowledgeable.
- oneblackcitizen, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8I bet that somehow, this is Mike Nifong's fault
- nakani, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10This just in: the Duke IT dept. is mildly retarded
- TwoSlick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"Another example of shooting your mouth off without all the facts."
Welcome to Digg. - SpacedCowboy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6"He made a mistake by saying it was not the Cisco. But the bug was triggered by the iphone. It might not have been the iphones fault, but it was the catalyst..."
Nice try. In related news, it turns out that cellphones are the trigger mechanism for the majority of terrorist bombs. Clearly, cell-phone manufacturers share some blame for the death and destruction over the last few years... - j0nny, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6"there imcompetents" -> "their incompetence"
- rebrad, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6In related news Kevin Miller was informed that his wife and 3 children are safe and haven't been harmed. He expects them to be released any day if he continues telling the "Truth".
- cliffzdude, on 10/11/2007, -12/+14If your life revolves around being an iPhone hater or lover, or any piece of hardware/software for that matter. Get a date, go out and have a nice dinner, and then GET A ***** LIFE.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3If only internet news had the rock-solid track record of newspapers, radio, or TV news.
- peterjhill, on 10/11/2007, -8/+10Read the original post Kevin made:
http://listserv.educause.edu/cgi-bin/wa.exe?A2=ind0707&L=wireless-lan&T=0&F=&S=&P=2182
This is what started it all.... he is not the one that contacted Network World to start this story. Clearly Network World was looking for a negative iphone story to generate a ton of traffic to their site. He is not a PR person. He graduated with honors with a CS degree from CMU. If you don't know what that means, then you clearly cannot comment on his technical skills.
He made a mistake by saying it was not the Cisco. But the bug was triggered by the iphone. It might not have been the iphones fault, but it was the catalyst... - iplayyouandme, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It was a big deal when all of the iPhone haters wanted to blame Apple. Now that the shoes on the other foot, now they want to be silent.
- chuckd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yes it does damnit; else I'm fscked;
- chicagofanboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Why are they so quick to jump the gun at Duke? Don't they get tired of getting burned in the press?
- swordedge, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2A true IT guy will say what I read at first. Apple phones are involve (true) and that it brings down the wireless network (true). The solution turns out to be to fix a CISCO bug. This is not the firs time the third leg of the Triopoly has failed in properly implementing a network protocol. When a packet type is optional, they sometimes send it anyway. This has led to bugs in the pas (BGP routers flooding the internet with worthless packets for example).
- billin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Exactly - book smarts doesn't necessarily translate into real-world smarts. Also, being a genius at computer science does not automatically make you a genius at public relations, as Kevin hopefully has learned. Though, from what other people have been saying about their personal experiences with this guy, it doesn't sound like this snafu is going to make him any less outspoken or opinionated. Guess we'll just have to see the next time one of Apple's products is the "cause" of a network problem at Duke.
Kevin: It's less satisfying than shooting your mouth off, but next time try admitting that you don't know WTF is going on and that you're still looking into it. If you had said: "At this juncture, I honestly don't think it's the Cisco equipment causing the outage, but I want to emphasize that we are still working to nail down the cause. We will release another statement when we know more."
There, was that so hard? Live and learn, I guess... - swordedge, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2As I saw the story come out, Duke said iPones were involved in the problem. They had a Cisco router network for wireless communications. The fix they applied was to the routers. So far, no one is admitting anyone is to blame. What I know of router protocols says that it is easily a difference of opinion on how to implement one section of the spec or another. Cisco doesn't always agree with the rest of the industry on that matter.
- imikedaman, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5Even if that was relevant, none of the words are spelled incorrectly.
- sardon1c, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2ibulb, do you even know the difference between its and it's?
- xtlosx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3hey guys, atleast it's an IT problem, and not a rape case brought onto duke once again...
- tdous, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Spelling no, grammar yes.
- MatthJD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Uh, is anyone NOT surprised that it was a Cisco issue? If you're the only campus with iPhone issues, it's a good bet the iPhone isn't causing it.
- swordedge, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1The only problem is NiFong doesn't have that kind of money and has been DISBARRED. He will never make what he dis as a DA again.
- TheRealDeal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Don't read them.
- tdous, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2What, cos this is the haven of rational and intelligent thought??
- alamandrax, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2sarcasm? needs work.
- OpalFist, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2pics or it didn't happen... (pics will also get you sued)
- TheRealDeal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1If you had tried one, you would know why.
- kissaboo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I think you mean the Durham DA. Duke just reacted.
- lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Good point. That's QA 101 right there.
- Hangender, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I knew those innocent iPhones couldn't possibly be the culprit.
- lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0You are, too. That's why you're on this forum, leaving this comment. But I understand where you're coming from. I'm an admitted Apple fanboy, and I g et sick of all the iPhone coverage, too. This story broke, not because Duke had problems, but because the iPhone was thought to be involved. Can you imagine Miller telling the press "It's because of these Nokia XXXX phones" or any other devices?
- IrwinFletcher, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The iPhone has been Nifong'd!
- TheNuminous, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1In the spirit of this thread: "even if that *were* relevant"
- tdous, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1But I thought Cisco systems are self-defending. *wink to camera*
- Pake, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Sometimes the bad taste just happen to be the sad truth.
