- Tu13erhead, on 10/12/2007, -11/+74I didn't realize Windows made computers...
- aaryn, on 10/12/2007, -7/+59True dat, it's not legit but to be honest with you, this was the first way I tried out OS X and it led to me buying a Mac :D
The OS X on x86 machines isn't as good as the real thing obviously, but when you get fed up with Windows to a certain point it's a good alternative until you can buy an actual Mac. - Dog_Paddle, on 10/12/2007, -7/+38Same here. I got into OSx86 about March, and got an iMac in September.

- Daisuke, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23If anything, the OSx86 project has been an excellent way to allow people who otherwise wouldn't have tried a Mac to pick up the software and at least give it a go. I am now in the market for an Apple laptop, after having tried OS X on my machine. It wasn't too functional at that point, but it was enough to let me get the hang of the OS and eventually fall in love with it. Apple is probably smart enough to realize that the people running OSx86 aren't losing them much money, but possibly earning them some.

"I have a mac, and it's dualbooted, running Windows XP on the other partition. Oddly enough, windows runs much smoother on an Apple computer than on any of my PCs before it."
Wow, who would have thunk it, Windows runs best on your newest (read:fastest) computer. I would have thought that Windows would run slower with every successive upgrade to newer/faster hardware. - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20FTA:
"There are only two ways to install OSX 10.4.88 legal on your Windows computer:"
Actually, there are none, as it is against the EULA to install it on anything other than an Apple branded machine, which by definition makes it illegal. - Sonizel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12digg mirror http://duggmirror.com/apple/Dual_boot_OSX_10_4_8_on_your_Windows_computer/

- omglazers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Anyone have links to AMD-Capable tutorials for osx on AMDs?
This coming from a legal mac owner here, I just would like to try it for kicks. - teckjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11or just search "the usual sources" for osx86
- evolseven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10illegal and going against a contract are 2 quite different things.. one is a matter of criminal courts (illegal) and one is the matter of civil courts (EULA)...
There is also the question whether eula's are even enforceable.. one it seems to be a one way thing.. only you are agreeing to it.. most contracts require both party's to sign on the dotted line... on top of that you are not presented with an eula generally until after you have already purchased and opened the software.. and considering most stores policys on opened software returns.. well that leaves you screwed..
what happens if I dont agree?? will give me the purchase price back?? is the store required to give me my money back?? doesn't seem very fair in my opinion... - seanthebond, on 10/12/2007, -14/+21Is it easy? Like any novice with a DVD burner could do it? Or is it one of those, "Oh *****, I destroyed my computer!" type of things.
Oh, and here is a torrent for the file if anyone wants it:

Please feel free to buy your Dell then. I owned an Inspiron 9300. The lady I spoke with over the phone at a Dell kiosk didn't know that model existed and confused it with the 6000. Got the worst technical support. All the icons were set to 120dpi so all the graphics on IE6 looked stretched. I hated all the trialware which slowed the system to a crawl so I reformatted the hard drive. Then I couldn't find the MPEG 2 codec to play DVDs in Windows Media Center. I chatted with some Dell tech support dude for 20 minutes just to find out that "actually my specialty is not with laptops. For that you need to call 1-800-###-####. Thank you for contacting Dell." I sold my 9300 after three months, by that time my warranty had already expired.
You can still stay competitive price-wise if you buy your own RAM when buying a Mac. - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Doesn't work on AMD... neither did 10.4.7
- alcuin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7For those on IE, don't believe the browser error nonsense message. Just set your security settings to high, and reload the page. This will stop the javascript from doing a browser agent check. And guess what? The page looks fine, nothing like the messed up screenshot the site's author accuses IE of doing.
- NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9er.. all you do is download a file from TPB and double click the install.
Or wait for the DVD to come out - and that should be out in the next few days.
No need for a guide for any of that. - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Me too, tried the dev kit the day after it was cracked, Bought a Mac Mini late this summer. If anything, the OSx86 project has helped bring Apple buisness. It's a great intermediate for those of us not willing to switch without giving it a test drive first.
- alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11If you're going to download OS X illegally in order to get Garage Band, why not just download Adobe Audition or Fruity Loops?
- Ray_Justice, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I had 10.4.5 on my Dell 640m laptop for a little while but got rid of it because there currently was no audio support for my chipset. Other then the audio problems everything else worked pretty good. Even the bluetooth. I am also another person it steered towards getting a mac, I will be getting a macbook as soon as they upgrade to core2s.
- jimi1337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@eplawless:
If I remember correctly, your CPU has to support the SSE2 instruction set (even for 10.4.6, right?). The first AMD's to do so were the Opterons and Athlon 64's so, if you have an earlier processor... - lbjazz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4With the exception of Logic all of the audio programs I can think of are available for both windows and mac, so he's most likely talking about garageband.
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Go ahead pirates, try out OS X for free!
Explore the thing in depth, look at how it's simple to use yet has tons of geeky things you can play with under the hood. Have fun with developer tools like Quartz Composer, Interface Builder and the rest.
Maybe some of you will see the light and understand that OS X is not an oversimplified closed-system toy OS.
Just remember that this kind of installation is more suited for geeks/hackers like you not the masses, and that to have a stable and supported system you're better off with a real Mac. - wfmk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Digging this from a budget Acer Travelmate 2413 running OS X 10.4.7 with an xbench score of 80!
Everything runs fine, and much easier to get AirPort working than Ndiswrapper with Linux! - captjc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am not 100% sure, but I remember a while ago hearing that there is a problem with OSx86 running on AMD 64 processors.
Perhaps someone can elaborate or correct me if I am wrong. - alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12I'd put Windows on a Mac if I had one.
If not because I really like Windows, then because I would want to maintain compatability with the rest of the computer world. - Djarum, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Seems to me the 10.4.4 one. I really wish someone would hack the latest kernel so Nvidia hardware could be used.
- superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4please post a link to a better guide for those of us interested?
- j.carcinogen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4A bad guide.
I don't know why using the Acronis bootloader is mentioned in so many guides when the Darwin bootloader is much better. - kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yes indeed, the bootloader is built in. Acronis is just to make it look fancy and add bloat.
- combatchuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The reason people put Windows on their Macs today is the same reason they were doing it 15 years ago: The developers of their software refuse to port to the Mac. I'm sure that most people using VPC or Parallells would be more than happy to re-purchase a Mac version of the software they need.
- aknowles5139, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wouldnt mind trying this on my PC... But i've used up all 300 gigs of my hard drive... does anyone know if this would work on an external harddrive? or do i have to have it on an internal drive.
- mtcool1988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you have 2 Hard disks, Could you just install OS x patched to the other hard disk, and it would ask when booting - Or do you have to take the steps so that it knows its there?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5So you can't play games anymore making yourself more productive.
- edn4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Soundtrack is more interesting than garageband and only available on macs
I've also used audition and soundtrack is much more intuitive and has tons more content to work with, it's part of the reason I got a mac - nxusername, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I would also like a Mac laptop with 2 STANDARD buttons. None of the 2 filger clicking crap.

the setup process is 99% the same than for an intel machine, depending on which AMD you have... - XTheEliminator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Running OSX on a regular wintel machine is perfectly legal. 'Checkbox' style software EULA's aren't legally binding in my country.
- mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ Jimmy1337
The CPU has to support SSE2 bare minium. And for any program that was desighned for the G5 or a program that runs in rosseta, you need SSE3. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@martinsargent
Well, god loves us, but he thinks you're a *****.

Sorry, I just had to do it, I know people like him shouldn't deserve to kill my time, espicielly when he kills his own. - groggyboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3ya, way to be mature repruhsent. you wanker.
@ryan:
try googling it. i found this site:
http://www.lifehacker.com/software/ubuntu/hack-attack-how-to-tripleboot-windows-xp-vista-and-ubuntu-193474.php
this howto is aimed at an intelmac, but it shouldn't be too hard to modify it for your needs.
i haven't tried it, but as soon as the torrent is done, i intend to give it a shot! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those saying Darwin is better than Acronis, while it may be, some people can get easily adjusted to Acronis Disk Director Suit and The Acronis OS Selector that starts up after bios, it's extremely user friendly and all it takes is a click of the mouse and you can choose whichever OS you would like to boot into, as far as setting up a password to boot into oneas well, great alternative to total noobs attempting chain:0 edit in the boot.ini file.
P.S.- I'm 56% Done with my Mac OS X 10.4.7 x86 DVD torrent :D!
Btw guys if you plan on installing the 10.4.8 mentioned here, I don't think it's supported on SATA HDDs, just a fair warning before you go setting partitions active and can't boot back into Windows! - viperssxt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i have a amd 3800+ dual core and have 3 macs. could i use 2 hard drives and switch boot oder
- jacks0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@seanthebond
ehh, not really. most of the time it requires alot of hacking, and I've found personally that most of the drivers won't work. Also they have to use an old kernel in order to get those few drivers to work. Still better than nothing I guess.
With the effort some people spend in hacking their computer, and maintaining that website/hack guide, I don't see why they can't grab the apple kernel (yes, it's open source), and simply make a gui exactly like OS X. I'm sure they could just copy a bit of gnome, since alot of the essential code is there. Then again, most people that are able to code such a project believe against copying a design (although legal), and designing. - ryan4477, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3any way to tripple boot linux osx and xp? i have an athlong 64 3700+. this is just one more thing to keep me from my homework yay ^_^
- Lazrius, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I've tried it before, but I can't install because I get an error message saying, "SAM Multimedia Read or Write failed." Any ideas? I have an AMD 64 3700+ and 1GB of RAM.
