- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26This is a bad idea its totally closed and benefits only the developers and marginally reimbuses a handful of people.
DIGG should do the SAME contest, OPEN SOURCE CROSS PLATFORM, ALL ideas are posted on the site and DUGG by the digg community to choose the best one. Reward is recognition. No one owns rights to any of the ideas. - notfred, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24bravo, why the hell do people link to articles that cotnribute nothing to the original? The only thing that can happen is you get LESS correct information the further away from the source you get.
Didn't anybody play "broken telephone"? - retral, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Really? It sounds like a company trying to cash in on someone's brilliant idea to me.

"THE ONLY ROYALTIES WINNERS ARE ENTITLED TO ARE FIFTEEN (15) PERCENT OF THE NET INCOME OF THE APPLE MACINTOSH-COMPATIBLE VERSION OF THE PRODUCT THAT MDA DEVELOPS BASED UPON THE WINNERS’ ENTRY SUBMISSIONS"
Brilliant idea, have other people come up with unique ideas for making you rich. Why didn't I think of that? /sarcasm - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Phil is quite smart. He has shown that he is adept at drawing media hype by getting Kevin Rose, Steve Wozniak, etc to judge his contest. More more importantly, he has built an organizational infrastructure (in this case, a contest) that allows him to sit back while other people do the heavy lifting (thinking up ideas, judging and developing them, etc). This is one of the tried and true paths to success. But let's not kid ourselves about the terms. If you win this contest, you better hope your idea isn't good enough to merit a Windows or Linux version, because you won't get a penny in royalties from the other 95% of the desktop market:
"THE ONLY ROYALTIES WINNERS ARE ENTITLED TO ARE FIFTEEN (15) PERCENT OF THE NET INCOME OF THE APPLE MACINTOSH-COMPATIBLE VERSION OF THE PRODUCT THAT MDA DEVELOPS BASED UPON THE WINNERS’ ENTRY SUBMISSIONS."
http://mydreamapp.com/about/rules/ - Chairboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14It's not for everyone, but think about this:
It's 15% of something instead of 100% of nothing. If you don't have the ability to code, lack a team of designers, QA, and so on, then your great idea won't go anywhere. This is clearly aimed at folks who have an idea but don't know what to do with it.
If you have the capability to put together a team and make your project go on your own, then go for it!
This is not a one size fits all solution, few things in life are. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16software companies are getting lazy
- shadownight, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17An excellent idea! I don't have an idea, but it's going to be so cool to vote and choose the best ideas.
- n8dawg87, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20For only 18 Phill is REALLY sharp! Being able to orchestrate something like this is amazing for his age! Can't wait to see what he does later on in life as well. Props to you Phill.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12@plarp - I wouldn't doubt that. You are the only person who's made a valid point thus far and we can't have any of that.
- Slayback, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12@mobilehavoc:
Sorry, but no. Have you ever worked with off-shore workers? BEST case scenario, you get work that is average.
Have you looked at the list of people that are going to be providing feedback and working on this project? You think there is any way in the world you'd get Woz to give you feedback on your own and you could then have a successful project doing the management yourself with off-shore workers?
This kid did some excellent networking and is creating a good opportunity for a handful of people. You're just pissed you didn't think of the idea.
P.S. As am I... ;) - myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -1/+815% for doing nothing more than having an idea doesn't sound that bad. You don't have to go through hell in back with developing the application and squashing ever elusive bugs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7BTW... my "killer app" idea(s) remains with me and I'm going to develop it(them).
- Schwa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Wow, such hate.
Have you considered that there are a LOT of people out there with good ideas for an app but NO technical ability/resources to get it done? A great idea for an app you will never develop is worth NOTHING.
All the commenters who complain that this is a rook deal need to understand how business works. Ideas are rarely worth anything- it's those with capital (startup dollars, or in this case, development dollars) who make the money. - Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The dream app of the 21st century is email with no spam.
- n8dawg87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm just saying its nice to see an 18 year old in the spotlight being an entrepreneur rather than just doing nothing through college and ending up with a degree. Not saying that he is in the right on this or that the royalties are fair.
When you look at it all they are really doing they are aiming at people who would never have the time or money to develop their own app. Of course it is waaay better for people to develop their ideas themselves, they are just helping out lazy and poor people. - cblalock, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Its better than what you get working for a Fortune 500 company. Anything you develop while in the employ of IBM, Cisco, Lenovo, Sun, etc is the property of that company. You get your salary and a pat on the back, but no royalties.
- Slayback, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Don't have to register to read the rules: http://mydreamapp.com/about/rules/
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I can run Windows and Linux on my APPLE-MACINTOSH, so that'll be a nice 15% royalties for every version they make. In the age of Boot Camp, they need to be specific or they'll end up in court.

award - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Then why have a Mac?
- dalesmatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well, I don't know why people are so uptight about this. just because someone can come up with a cool idea, doesn't mean they ever would have gotten around to implementing it. Also, when people get venture capital money, they often lose all control of the product and retain only a marginal percentage, this doesn't seem to different to that IMHO. I for one think it's a cool idea, more power to them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8yes but u have a job, and ~50'000 a year salary.
- Slayback, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10@ Those saying he's trying to "steal" ideas.
At first, it sort of rubs me the wrong way that he's soliciting ideas, but I also see it as sort of an American Idol type model.
Here are two outcomes:
1) A person gets their app promoted through this campaign and their shareware app sells more than any other shareware app ever. Sure, Phill may take a cut, but they've also produced a better app than they could have on their own and they've received much more publicity. They'll probably make more money than they would have on their own.
2) Someone doesn't make the cut, but through the process, they polished and solidified their ideas, and they go on to make their application on their own. They received the motivation to start something they may not have otherwise.
It's really a win-win. It'll get more apps coming to the Mac regardless of whether or not they're all "winners". - Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5He's not "stealing" anyone's ideas, but he's certainly buying them at an incredibly cheap price.
- slantyyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You know, even if it got ported to Windows and Linux it would probably be less profitable. A lot of Windows users don't like to pay for software, and Linux users prefer OSS/FSS.
On the other hand, Mac users are generally more inclined to pay for shareware.
While that patent liability segment of the contract is TOTALLY LAME (because of that clause, I'm not sure I would want to enter), it is better to get a Macbook and 15% of miniscule profits than to sit on a idea that you'll never execute and therefore get no financial rewards. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5An app that would let me use the ipod on a mac without itunes, and let me manage, rename, etc straight off the ipod, (i want the ipod to work as another drive but still play the mp3z) that would be nice....
- slantyyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I bought my Mac primarily to use iLife. I'm sure that I can't be the only one.
- aoe2bug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3except that you only get one vote :)
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree with brundlefly. Kevin: Are you listening?
- DShafik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2/me submits idea and keeps your 15%
Might be a good idea to actually ENTER, rather than give your ideas away to all those evil people we know are patrolling Digg for just such a thing!
- Davey - btipling, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I am so tired of this 'my dream ap' ***** on digg. It's like on here everyday. I think someone has multiple accounts...marked as spam.
- NiX0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3howabout an app that makes ALL windows games work. No, wait.. better yet, an app that makes ALL windows games work better than they would on Windows.
talk about a dream app :) - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5And intel photoshop :)
- akatsuki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I agree that the 15% royalty and giving up your intellectual property for any further developments or cross-over apps is pretty crappy. This is a raw deal for anyone with a truly good idea. So I contributed a couple of ideas that I want personally to exist, but I don't think are really worth massive amounts of income or money. If I had a great idea, there is no way in hell I would submit it to this competition.
I probably won't really bother with the contest nor with all the hype. I have enjoyed Phill's blog for a while, and Menuet is a great app, but this makes me think that he is not a very fair guy.... - aoe2bug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2or darwine (ie when its theoretically finished).
- notfred, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Uh, no, I'm complaining that I'd rather see a link to the mydreamapp web site than a link to a useless macworld article about the web site, that adds nothing new.
(sorry, this is in response to blizzwatch. I applaud and, sigh, "digg" remiprev.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The Dream Up a Killer App is, of course, 3D virtual sex with Scarlett Johansson.
- johnred, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Phill-stalker! ;)
- slantyyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It already exists. It's one of GeeThree's slick tools. It's an iMovie plugin that's in one of their toolsets.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"My idea for a killer app is an App that stops the majority of Mac users from acting like eliteist asshats."
And my idea for a killer app is something that automatically blocks bitter haters who have nothing better to do than troll Apple diggs and make obnoxious remarks. - dtrinh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I anticipate a very interesting couple of weeks ahead for 'MyDreamApp'. Props to Phil - the sheer amount of man hours required to put this together is pretty amazing alone. Not to mention The Woz is in.
Interesting system nonetheless - 500 word proposals - 24 finalists - 3 winners. 15% royalties and MacBooks. Not the greatest incentive - but seeing an idea come to fruition might be worth it - mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I would agree with your post except the part "Sure, Phil may take a cut.."
That should read "Sure, Phil may take an 85% cut..."
The winners would be better offhsoring the development of their app and keeping both the intellectual property as well as more than just 15% of revenue. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Uh, oh... "Winners will receive royalties equal to 15 percent of the net income of the application after it goes on sale."
It's better to receive a lower royalty on gross sales, not net income. I'd take 5-10% gross sales anyday over net. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8As a Mac user I thank you, some of us are elitist ***** but not all of us.
- aoe2bug, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3you should seriously submit that...
(I'm a mac user... but i just think it'd be funny as they're reading the submissions) - notfred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Good point, I missed the liability clause.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Macintosh is not an OS, it is a hardware platform. I can run Windows and Linux on my Macintosh these days, so they'd better have good lawyers, because I'd want 15% of any version they make, since it runs on my Macintosh.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9http://mydreamapp.com/about/rules/
I don't know what the "going rate" for an application designer is in terms of royalties (it probably varies quite a lot) but the winners of this contest are promised 15% of sales revenue. Does that seem low to anyone?
Also, it states that winners are entitled only to the royalties from the Macintosh version - if one of the people on the panel decides the idea is good enough for Windows then not only do they own the rights to create it for Windows but they also get to keep 100% of the profits.
Furthermore the rules also state that if your idea wins (and is therefore duty bound to be developed into an application) and then MDA is sued for anything (another company claims that it is their idea etc, patent infringement blah) then it is not MDA that is liable but the person who submitted the idea! Don't worry though, the rules also state that they'll give you up to $100 to fight those nasty lawyers off.
I know this post is going to get modded down, that's the nature of the Apple category here on digg. Phill Ryu will probably come here and claim I "stalk" him. All I'm saying is that people REALLY should read the rules before they submit anything to this thing and make sure it is their best option to give them their ideas. -
