Install on the machine with the music, set up an alias, similar to this:
Alias /MyMusic "[path to itunes directory]"
<Directory "[path to itunes directory]">
AllowOverride None
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>
Use a dynamic dns service and forward port 80 on your router, and now anyone can check out your music with a web browser or music player that can scrape web links. I typically fetch my music from work with Songbird this way.
Now this assumes you're not stupid enough to keep a library full of DRM'd music just because the company that sells it has a really cool persona...- itsthebrod, on 03/20/2008, -3/+3Oh is that all? That's a piece of cake!
- bobthegreat1224, on 03/20/2008, -3/+2Apache's not exactly a music player/media manager. I think this circumnavigates the point a bit.
- stoppedcode12, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2The point is the share your music, which is exactly what apache will do for you.

- maexus, on 03/20/2008, -2/+2I believe Simply Media let you download at one time. Current you can stream from your friends library using this. iTunes used to let you stream from shared libraries over the lan but they took out the feature.

And before someone asks, yes there are quite a few games for Mac OS X too, granted most of them are indie shareware or freeware.

- muxton, on 03/20/2008, -1/+29Only problem with it I can see is the file names it generates ! The original filename is lost and the downloaded files have names such as A2C86639114885A1.mp3....
Pity it could generate a meaningful name, it restores the original MP3 tag info so I dont see why it couldnt use that to create filename ?- PimpinOnWelfare, on 03/20/2008, -1/+29maybe that is a good thing ;)
- ssj2119, on 03/20/2008, -1/+4I was going to say the same thing...
- alexkorova, on 03/20/2008, -0/+3Should be an option anyway
- Gabberwok, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1There are programs to fix file names and even tags. Shouldn't be too much of a problem.
- fuxjoey, on 03/20/2008, -1/+13as long as the name appear in itunes, then i dont really care about the filename.
- counterplex, on 03/20/2008, -0/+9You can configure iTunes to store all files named after the ID3 tags.
- phronko, on 03/20/2008, -1/+2What happens when you stop using iTunes? Or start using something that doesn't support ID tags? Unlikely maybe...but what if you need to locate or move a file by searching for its file name?
It just seems messy to me to have random filenames that can only be identified by digging for information buried within the file itself.- thepxc, on 03/20/2008, -1/+1With Amarok, you can either select the files and "Copy files to Collection/Move files to Collection" which will organize them as it moves them, or select the songs in your collection and right click and select "manage files" and then "organize N files" where N is the number of files.
PS: Amarok can access iTunes shares, and Firefly Media Server mt-daapd can serve them. Linux users don't have to be left out. :-)

- Lyph5, on 03/20/2008, -3/+4Even if this was illegal (I believe it could be argued to be the same as allowing a friend to borrow a CD while you keep a copy, aka fair use) how would you get nabbed? It's a whitelist system, meaning that you'd have to invite someone who worked for the RIAA into your group to get caught. And even then, you could argue that since they were openly sharing their library, and they're the copyright holders, that all you did was accept gifts from the RIAA.

Obvious concerns..
Could Apple end up with a record of all of this?
How much usage feedback does iTunes provide?
Do folks have to register with Apple, login etc,to use it?
(never used it)- sea5ons, on 03/20/2008, -0/+3Actually, it has nothing to do with the DRM ---- the DRM isn't circumvented by this. It's always been possible to move the itunes FILES to other computers ---- but getting them to play required authorization. Some hacks have come and gone that defeated the DRM, but that's an ongoing tug of war.

- meepzork, on 03/20/2008, -3/+2anyone know how to share an itunes library on a LAN but passing through a router? i want to be able to connect to a shared library i have on a server in my garage so that i can control it in front row. For various reasons I had to put a router between me and the server and i cant figure out how to get bonjour or whatever to pass through the router...
This looks like it would work but i dont want to have to go through the internet to get ot my garage...- thepxc, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2P-P-P-PORT FORWARDING! Forward the relevant ports on your router to your garage machine, and tell your local computer to look for the share on the router (tell it the router's address is the server address).
or use a VPN so they act like they're on the same physical network.

- joshharvey, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1I was up and working for about an hour yesterday... but now it says "unavailable".....

- r04dki11, on 03/20/2008, -2/+1I've been using this app for a little over a year now and its solid! I was able to use my own jabber server to set up a roster for myself and it works like a charm!
- thanatosys, on 03/20/2008, -0/+5I seem to be having trouble connecting, is this happening to anybody else?
- sq2shooter, on 03/20/2008, -0/+3Yes. It says that it can't connect.
- Gabberwok, on 03/20/2008, -1/+13Any bets on how quickly this gets broken by a new iTunes update?
- r04dki11, on 03/20/2008, -0/+3It has lasted through numerous iTunes updates thus far.
- budda, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2but they also didn't have thismuch traffic, and i'm sure someone from apple will see it eventually
- zongamin, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1It doesn't require itunes to be loaded in order to work - it just uses your itunes library file.
So I'll take that bet you fool.
- pox05, on 03/20/2008, -3/+1looks like you need itunes on both ends, I am not allowed to listen to my ipod at work, nor am i allowed to install itunes, i just want to stream my itunes over the internet (in a browser) to myself, with the option to sort through it and pick what i want to hear.
- shredswithpiks, on 03/20/2008, -0/+4if you aren't allowed to listen to an ipod or install itunes, what makes you think it's ok with your company to stream music in a browser?
- pox05, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1because i can listen to pandora, i just want my OWN music in place of it.
- Darkneuros, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2You need orb, Orb will link to a music library and stream to almost anything. And I don't think you need to install anything on your work pc, just log in and it all works in a browser.
- vawksel, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1http://jukefly.com is SIGNIFICANTLY better than Orb for music. Orb is a piece of ***** in comparison.
- vawksel, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1use http://jukefly.com if you can't install anything at work.

- tba2287, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1The RIAA would like to see your IP address now.
- klax89, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1Does this remove any protection?
- tba2287, on 03/20/2008, -0/+3The RIAA doesn't spend time chasing people's online comments because a comment alone doesn't prove that you did anything or even have the software. However, if they REALLY thought they had a realistic chance of litigation (possibly if you use your Digg username on TPB or Limewire), then their lawyers would threaten Kevin and Alex with a DMCA subpoena to get your IP address to see if it matches what is shown on p2p.
However, if they resort to doing that, then it would mean you didn't pony up the $3-4k, since they only do this sort of sleuthing once a settlement is rejected. - ghinch, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1What does Alex have to do with Digg the site? Diggnation is a separate entity. Notice all the episodes where Kevin talks about stuff going on at Digg, and Alex responds with the curious interest of someone who is not directly involved.

- cbittle, on 03/20/2008, -1/+1Wait... Peer to peer file sharing of music over the internet?! ... Okay, all cynicism aside, I am jealous I didn't think of writing this app, or at least help with it during its development. I recall writing a similar application for the Xbox, making it think you were connected via LAN to other Xboxes which were actually across the net. Good times....

- vawksel, on 03/20/2008, -1/+1Something a little more legal, try http://jukefly.com
You can share your itunes playlists, but you do it more radio broadcast style rules so the RIAA don't come knockin. - Georgy, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1And still we complain how evil the RIAA is....
