- NsinU8, on 10/10/2007, -9/+170Idiots. Digg comments are beginning to look more like youtube comments. The swastika symbol has been associated with positivity alot longer than negativity. I hate stories that manipulate readers by taking them through a labyrinth of long shot information to prove a point. I see the twin towers on my dollar bill!
- thehardgoodbye, on 10/10/2007, -3/+88There is a more detailed story about how the command key symbol came to be at folklore.org.
http://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&story=Swedish_Campground.txt&sortOrder=Sort%20by%20Date&detail=medium&search=command%20key - christopheles, on 10/10/2007, -20/+95I use my command key to control a horde of Aryan zombies.
cmd-Brains. - kris33, on 10/10/2007, -2/+74The Command symbol is used in Norway on all signs for attractions near the road.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+61The swastika symbol is a symbol for god and through out India you see it on temples all over the place; they have been using it for thousands of years.
hitler stole the symbol and now most western people think nazi when they see a swastika. - sarazen, on 10/10/2007, -6/+61Interesting, but a stretch to say that all, or even any of this meaning was considered when apple put it on the keyboard. Heck, it also looks like a clover leaf intersection. Mostly this reminds me of the brouhaha over the old Proctor & Gamble symbol. Much ado about nothing.
- Wasted, on 10/10/2007, -3/+49Yes that is where they got the inspiration for that symbol : http://folklore.org/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&story=Swedish_Campground.txt&topic=Software%20Design
- Offspring, on 10/10/2007, -2/+35It's not the nazi symbol. The Nazi party took the symbol and reversed it, as well as tilting it by like 45 degrees. Prior to the horrific nature that is conjured up by seeing that symbol now a-days it was meant as a good luck charm or something along those lines. Hitler perverted it, but messed wtih it at the same time. Apple is not full of a bunch of neo-nazis, contrary to this submitters attempt at hinting at exactly that.
- AryanZombie102, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30Did somebody call me again?
Dammit man, thats the 5th time today! - ModernGeek, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29I read somewhere that that is where they got the idea from. Jobs wanted a symbol to represent command, and they had about two weeks to come up with something. *edit*: http://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&story=Swedish_Campground.txt&sortOrder=Sort%20by%20Date&detail=medium&search=command%20key From the comment below
- PaperMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25Well except for the dyslexic ones surely...
- brstilson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Actually it was due to Steve Jobs not liking the fact that there were too many Apple logos on the Apple II hardware and software. he wanted a different symbol, so the development team for mac found the current command symbol and have been using it ever since.
- merreborn, on 10/10/2007, -4/+27Sorry, that's not a swastika, it's a sauvastika -- the swastika's mirror image.
http://www.symbols.com/encyclopedia/15/155.html
As such, I doubt any Aryans would respond to it. - supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -10/+32And why the ***** not?
St John's cross is a very distinct icon, even associated with the swastika, which for the uninformed is an ancient buddhist symbol, and st johns cross has nothing to dow ith nazis or hitler. - ncc74656m, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Blah...
Though it sounds like you're just making a joke, in actuality, that form of the swastika is NOT the Nazi one, in fact, it is a symbol of good luck for many cultures. - supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18The swastiki was adopted by the nazis, it is in fact a Buddhist symbol, wiki swastika and learn something.
Or visit your local buddhist temple or information centre, you may find the iron doors riddled with swastikas and other symbols of life and such... - rainmanbk, on 10/10/2007, -7/+23Yeah, that comment failed.
- 10goto10, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17So, technically it's the "ancient remains-key"
- felchdonkey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Or you could have just linked to the Wikipedia entry, gotten all this info, plus the actual background of how Apple chose it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command_key
(Summary - icon designer Susan Kare looked it up in a book where it said it was the symbol for "campground." She decided she liked the look of it, didn't care what it meant to the ancient Vikings, and put it on the keyboard.) - merreborn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14even better, it's not a swastika, it's a sauvastika -- the swastika's mirror image. http://www.symbols.com/encyclopedia/15/155.html
- nodlezfodlez, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16nazis are steve jobs?
- mercano, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Actually, it was the menus that set him over the edge. Open up the File menu, and in the right column you have all the keyboard shortcuts, Apple-N, Apple-O, Apple-S, Apple-P, Apple-Q...
"There are too many Apples on the screen! It's ridiculous! We're taking the Apple logo in vain! We've got to stop doing that!"
The story behind it: http://folklore.org/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&story=Swedish_Campground.txt&sortOrder=Sort%20by%20Date&detail=medium&search=command - roomforpanic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13The swastika's lines bend opposite to that symbol's, and is presented at a 45 degree angle. That symbol is used across the world, including among Native Americans.
- griz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13No, he is proving that Diggers don't bother to clearly understand what they read before posting a comment.
- aixelsyD, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16That's is not the Nazi sign stop relating Apple to Facists.
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12I think all the Nordic countries use it (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, FInland, Iceland). Probably some deal made through the Nordic Council.
- grandwazzoo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Yeah, it's very common sight on finnish roads too.
- PaperMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Why does he have to be a Nazi...? Why couldn't he just be a Buddhist? Or better yet, like all those hipster folks that get oriental characters tattooed on themselves only to find out that it means nothing anywhere close to what the guy in the tattoo parlor said it did..
- mt066, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I used to work at an old university building that had those symbols all over the place as decorative markings. The building probably predated WW2 by quite a bit but they still had to put a bunch of plaques up explaining the swastikas so people didn't think they were some kind of Nazi sympathizers.
- andrewa, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10I wish I could digg you up more than once. Good comment, what the hell is BRi7X smoking...?cw
- iceman0113, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7It's not the nazi sign, it's a buddhist symbol when it's on its side like that:
http://www.buddhistchannel.tv/index.php?id=3,707,0,0,1,0 - Unlgued, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The Nazis were borrowing it, too. There's nothing particularly sinister about a swastika.
- Subterfug, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9The Nazi swastika is flipped the other way. Different symbol.
- Tenlow, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11I think it has more to do with designating a prehistoric site. I mean that key has been around since the late 70's/early 80's. In computer terms, that is prehistory.
- urpwnd, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10the swastika type design in TFA is the more traditional design, where the lines do not correspond to the SS or nazi movements at all. if you look, it is "backwards" from the nazi swastika.
- griz, on 10/10/2007, -6/+12omgz imbecile
- mseneschal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/40/Apple_key.jpg/800px-Apple_key.jpg
- Thumper13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Please tell me you're not that ***** stupid.
- coltraning, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9My family is jewish, but I know my ***** history. This is not a Nazi symbol. Reversed or not, it was used for millennia. This is an ancient symbol which has nothing to do at all with Nazism, racism or Aryan-*****-anything...
That said...I'm not going to ***** parade it around, since it does have that connotation for some people. I'm just telling you that I highly, highly doubt that Steve Jobs is a Nazi.
At least read the damn Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika . It's so easy! I'm not asking you to go to a library...
Do I have to do all your research for you? Don't scream fire in a crowded room if you haven't actually seen a fire...or at least smelled some ***** smoke! - surf314, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Why are people getting dugg down for pointing out the origins of the swastika? If you would read carefully it also says it is associated in pre-Columbian America. If anyone has over seen Indian wall paintings the swastikas were not uncommon. Are native Americans Nazis too?
- RexMaxus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6No, that feature is coming in Leopard.
- Buzzby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I think its Zoso
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Led_Zeppelin_IV - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5However, it *is* the most mystical key on the keyboard.
As a kid, I remember wanting to get a my hands on an Apple IIgs to see what that freaky key was all about. Just look at it; for 1986, it's pretty wild:
http://www.obsoletecomputermuseum.org/app_iigs/funkykey.jpg
At the time I actually thought it did two different things, depending on which side of the key was pressed. - StandardsDT, on 10/10/2007, -8/+13digg me down
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika
Read the above before you post "Apple is Nazi!!" comments out of ignorance. - judbeasley, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Wow .. that was quite a lame little read there. If I wasn't indulging in a tasty chicken ceasar pita as I read it I would be quite upset right now.
- dajuggernaut, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Ever notice?!?!?!? yeah, i spent the last 26 years of my life pondering if this was going to show up right as Apple teamed up with Volkswagen
- ballagarba, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Scandinavia/vikings ftw!
- mr1337, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6For those who don't know better, the Swastika was never a "bad" symbol until the Nazis used it.
