- onestep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4this is for people with more time & tech savvy than money..
- noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This really is awesome. Seems really simple too.
- dhoefler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm a tech guy that owns a mac. I would rather do it myself than pay $99 a year.
- gregwbrooks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OT, but the guy who came up with this also designed the FreeBSD mail toaster - a REALLY stable, security-centric mail server rig that's pretty easy to lash together and has a lot of community support. Noste around at his site (www.tnpi.biz) under the unix heading and you'll see instructions, testimonials, etc.
- Schrade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Most Mac users would rather just plop down money and not have to learn a thing. I don't own a Mac but this article is great for those who like to go against "The Man" and their accursed restricted pay services.
Yeah that's right.. Apple is The Man :-P
Great article, great idea. - MonkeyPhil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is an updated version here...

I think this is pretty cool, but I like this kind of thing. Definately a balance between time vs money vs interest in doing this vs having a spare server machine or buying one for less than $99 ;)
Would be good if you do have a fake .mac server to share it with a bunch of your best mac friends.
I still think that if you've already spent a lot of money buying several macs from Apple, they'd offer you some sort of basic .mac account to sync them. From using that, you could see the benefits of upgrading to a pro account. (I know they offer free trial).
Also $99 is just for one year. If you plan to use the .mac service long term and you want more speed in exchange for less features, this seems a good option to me. - smartsaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Forgot to say that the dotGoogle can be like the gmail drive thing.
- smartsaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This can only mean that now service providers like Yahoo, Google, and others can now jump into the scene and charge $20 a year for something similar.
I am just waiting for somebody to make an iGoogle or dotGoogle (dotMac) clone. - jmlz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Same here !

- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i used to use webDAV for calendars, but it's not quite the same as iSync. you can only publish one-way. all adjustments have to be made on the system that publishes. still, it's a good deal.
i ended up buying .mac for the address book sync. i couldn't find a decent way to do this on my own. and i gotta say, i'm happy. my imac, powerbook, and panasonic x800 all share the same data. - Nikore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It leaves out one important thing, iSync between two computers. That's the only reason why I use .Mac. Really all this "hack" is setting up webdav and tricking OS X in too thinking idisk.mac.com is really my local server.
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just pay for it, its cheap for all the stuff u get for a year, and you forgot about all of the web services the apple gives u on their site.
- sshack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One thing this doesn't cover is the DNS aspect. Unfortunately, if you edit hosts alone backup.app still doesn't hit your http server.
If anyone has solved this, I'd love to hear it. - onestep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the v1 link is for pre 10.4
- x404x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm planning on doing both until my account expires - I have a dotMac account for the GF, it makes things simple and she does not really want to sit down and learn something new. She drags the files to the iDisk and click the sync icon - simple. I want a DIY option as I don't plan on updating my account after my year expires - iDisk is slow (my main gripe) and I rather host storage myself so I know my data is secure
- stian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome, this even solves the problem that www.mac.com will be blocked when you do it. That was the only thing that kept me from setting up my own iDisk last time I looked at a simular project.
- nugget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0humm... Maybe this could turn into a full blown project. Get everything together and put it in its own distro, Have the basics get setup, and write up a program for windows and linux to utlize this too. I would definatly do this if there was a nice front end for Linux/Windows that could do that. Plus I'm gonna be getting a old computer back sometime so it may work very nicly if I had a front end... this is a very cool project.
- wolever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hrm, has anyone had any luck setting this up? I tried it from X10.4.4 to Gentoo with Apache 1.3.31. No dice. OSX doesn't like logging in (using Digest and Basic auth). I tried logging in with DAVExplorer and it worked just fine, so its not (I presume) a problem with Apache. It seems like it _should_ work when I take out authentication... But it would be nice to have it.
- fungke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Arn't there any other companies which do the same? I seem to remember stubling across a site that claiming to do the same thing for a lot less. I current use .mac and find it very useful, if a bit expensive.
Apple should really bundle it together as part of iLife. - theprez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd rather pay the $99.
- ttntyler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would rather pay the $99..
- ScottBod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great, but I'll wait until somebody creates a really simple shell script or installer as that seems a little complicated.
- AliG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is great for techy's that own mac's.

there is an app for os x which works like .mac but sends your info to your gmail account. not very secure though, someone swiped my id and used it to buy world of warcraft time. - danielandrews, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My time to set all this up is worth more than the $99 I'd save for a clunkier version of the .Mac service.
- xenon221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just paid for .mac a couple of weeks ago and it's paid for itself already. It's really pretty slick and a lot of programs tie into it seamlessly. For example, my newsreader syncs to .mac, so at work I can check digg (during break of course) and have it reflect at home. Good to have the options though and the info for doing yourself if you'd like.
- spiffyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not even $99. Amazon is selling it for $79 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0007LW230/sr=1-1/qid=1139322831/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-8556192-5860048?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance (no that's not an affiliate link, thank you).
That's a no brainer for Mac people that don't want to geek out (and spend a lot of time). I don't use .Mac because I'm already paying for a VPS, but if I didn't... - streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone's know's the proper way's of using's apostrophe's!
- bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let me know when it syncs bookmarks and contacts, integrates with iWeb, and can provide hosting faster than the measly 30kb/s my cable modem offers. Also, let me know when I can run SMTP and IMAP without wondering when my ISP will block those ports. Until then .Mac is just fine.

I knew that it was a matter of time before someone totally reverse engineered this. I planned on doing the same thing once I get a net imac.
Apple is starting to attract more Linux-type guys like me to the party and we will do stuff like this.
I figured they were using just WebDAV or something like it, and it would not be that big a deal to fake being your own .MAC. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0.mac is ***** retarded you *****, anyone paying fro it is stupid. grow a pair and get some REAL ebhosting
