- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Do any of you understand why Disney bought Pixar outright? Because Pixar has turned out one major hit for them after another. And they almost let Pixar go because they thought they could do it better themselves. Well now after the relative failures of their in house CG animation films they have actualy pretty much admitted they were wrong, and desperately need Pixar's films. The last thing they are going to do after spending 7 BILLION on Pixar is mess with them in any way! They just want Pixar to continue doing what they have always done. If they wanted to gut Pixar, or change it at all they wouldn't have bothered spending so much money to get it. It isn't worth 7 Billion to keep them away from the competition. All this means is that for the forseeable future Pixar will keep making movies like they always have, and Disney will keep putting them out. In other words nothing will change except that now Disney won't have to worry about Pixar taking their magic to another studio and really putting the final nails in the coffin of Disney's so called "high quality family films".
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think the analysis in the story is correct. Pixar will have far more influence on Disney than the other way around in the same way Next had more influence on Apple. It's not the end of Pixar. It's the beginning of Pixar as a self-contained film production and distribution company. If anything, they will no longer be saddled with the hassles of working out restrictive distribution agreements anymore where they are forced to give away the ownership of their characters.
Or am I the only one who remembers that disappointing news from last year where Disney planned to produce Toy Story 3 without Pixar? Disney owns those characters and can do it without Pixar's approval. Now, that's going to change. - mizzoucat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This isn't even official yet as it has yet to happen. Bad story.......
- AndrewMayne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Bad headline, again. Hasn't happened yet.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Steve Jobs says: "I'm rich, bitch!"
- ericd543, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Pixar buys Disney for (minus) $7 billion." -- hehe, good one.
- CoolSilver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Welcome to iDisney!
- Anargeek77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Steve Jobs will integrate their technology on a whole new level. This will also be a big wave of exciting things to come (APPLE,DISNEY,PIXAR)!!!

'Pixar buys Disney for -$7 billion.'
Additionally, with Steve Jobs's field of influence closer to executives as Disney, there may soon be a much larger amount of Disney content available on iTunes in coming months.
Jobs will have much more influence over Disney, and hence ABC. This can (will, IMHO) be a VERY BIG DEAL as the delivery paradigm shifts. - SpeedyG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TRANSLATION:
Disney: "We're sorry Pixar! You were right! We don't have a clue how to do animation anymore! Please come back!" - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
okay im a little confused...wasn't pixar owned by disney and then they split up...and now they're owned again? boy am i lost!
No, Steve Jobs bought what became Pixar from George Lucas for a mere $10m. It used to be ILM's computer research division. - MrFisty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Props to TimmyK.
Disney have been dying for years, and they've fought over distribution rights/costs since Toy Story.
Buying Pixar was absolutely essential to Disney's survival.
Let's not forget the real pioneer in all of this: George Lucas, who incidently sold Pixar way back for a few million dollars as part of a divorce settlement. Poor bastard. - TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or rather they wouldn't bother doing this in the future, as it hasn't actually happened yet. ***** headline.
- AaronD12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope, when and if this occurs, that Jobs takes control of Disney, being its largest single shareholder.
- CapAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this could turn out to be very good for both Pixar and Disney.
First I don't think Disney is going to change anything a Pixar they are going to let them continue to run the way they are running since Pixar has a 100% chance of making a Mega Hit movie.
Second Depending on how much stock Steve Jobs is getting we could be seeing Steve Jobs pretty much taking over Disney. I remember hearing that the Disney Family (especial Roy Disney) wanted Steve Jobs to take over as the new CEO and work his magic to turn Disney around just like what he did with Pixar and Apple.
The more you think about it the more its like Steve and Pixar was payed to take over Disney. - TexMachina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Aside from the friction between Eisner and Jobs Disney and Pixar were hand in hand already. Eisner's out of there so if this deal does go through there shouldn't be any vengeance killings of golden geese.
- xofc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anybody know what percentage of Disney Jobs owns?
- xofc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0apple/disney/abc/pixar conglomerate... hmmm. Vertical monopoly from content creation to digital distribution.
- applepro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this may be what makes Apple into a true contender (in the next 10 years or so)
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pixar already had deals with disney in the past disney pumps in money to pixar, pixar inturn puts disney and their names on the movie, nothing will change the movies wont suck less (i hope)
- hordak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> Thus begins Jobs' quest for title Master of the Universe.
Sorry, he'd have to beat He-Man out for that spot. Jobs has no chance. ;) - junesix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rubbish. This applexnext article was posted on Sunday morning. It wasn't until Monday that the Disney board met to discuss the proposed merger.
For a hot property like Pixar, the deal will definitely have to be for more than $7billion. If the deal goes through as rumored as an all-stock swap, Jobs will be walking away with at least $3.5billion in Disney stock or around 7% of the entire Disney company. Next guy in line is Eisner with just 1.7%. Jobs would be guaranteed a seat on the board - no doubt about that. How much he rocks the boat, especially with Eisner in the seat next to him, is definitely ripe for speculation.
Overall, the man in charge would still be CEO Bob Iger though Jobs would definitely wield a tremendous influence on the direction of the entertainment company. In many areas, Jobs would probably have to shut up or recuse himself altogether due to conflicts of interest with Apple. Very interesting times... - caffeineloaded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Disney still has not placed a bid on Pixar
- CharlieL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As of Jan 24th at 10AM EST, there are discussions at Pixar about an offer, but no outright sale, and certainly nothing happening on the 22nd.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People gotta stop complaining about Pixar movies going to suck. So far, all of their movies were published and marketted by Disney, and now all of their future movies will. So, not much of a change, if you think about it...
If anything, Disney and AMC will change, not Pixar. Jobs is not one to let someone else influence his company, but he has a habit of influencing others. - ovidius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't believe I dugg this! This guy is always submitting his own lame-ass blog on digg. I am not sure how he was so certain of the outcome when none of the media outlets that were his sources had anything but speculation about a potential acquisition.
- supergeorgina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crrrraaazy.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, jobs is settin himself up to either be really broke or really rich
- card2570, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0After reading the Washington Post article, I retract my statement. My apologies.
I am puzzled by the finality of the story's title, though. $7B deals are tough to complete, and this one isn't done yet. - monkeybutler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0THIS JUST IN:
Raven Simone is now slated to take lead role in next 4 Pixar films. Shes also replacing the voice of Larry the Cable guy, Owen Wilson and Paul Newman in upcoming Cars movie and is currently recording overdub tracks to replace Tom Hanks in the newly planned Toy Story 1 and 2 "Special Dixar Edition."
Disney acquiring Pixar is great for Apple and for Disney, but longterm then the consumers are the ones getting screwed. - digitaldivider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pixar has been "absorbed" we all knew it was coming.
- ra3ndy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"no digg+lame for yet another sensationalist headline.

Disney buys Pixar for $7 Billion. How's that sensationalist? It's not like he said "OMG!!! DISNEY BUYS LIVING ***** OUT OF PIXAR!!!! END OF WORLD NIGH!!!! OMG!!!!!1!!11ONE" - kkaabboomm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0everywhere from cnnmoney to the motley fool to WSJ has this as a rumor, with everything this guy states as fact as just possible outcomes of the deal. this is NOT official in any way, shape, or form.
- FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YaY for Steve Jobs!
- smeager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For every body who doesn't believe this you should read more articles:
one from the washington post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/19/AR2006011902681.html
and the telegraph (a uk magazine): http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2006/01/22/cnpixar22.xml&menuId=242&sSheet=/money/2006/01/22/ixcitytop.html
It seems that the final decision will be tomorrow. - kazem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anargeek77, I don't see how this will improve anything. I mean, Pixar and Disney already worked together on previous movies. And how would Apple contribute? Artists already use Apple stuff to do their work. I just see Pixar's movies becoming worse and worse in order to satisfy Disney's agenda.
- Unknown1987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What kind of news site is that. There are countless grammatical errors and very poorly written
- ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hey Jobs, see about firing Michael Eisner"
"No Givesy Backsies!!!" - A-money, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anybody mentioned the fact that there is going to be free pimping of apple products in disney movies? Might get the 5% market share up.
- Raemi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Hey Jobs, see about firing Michael Eisner"
FYI - Michael Eisner is no longer the head of Disney. The new CEO is Bob Iger, who will hopefully take Disney into a new era (apparently now with Pixar at his side).
http://money.cnn.com/2006/01/10/magazines/fortune/disney_fortune/
Michael Eisner, on the other hand, is now trying his hand at talk shows...
http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0111Eisner-TV-ON.html - shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope Disney goes back to being original. They've really produced a lot of crap over the years. Especially their television station and sequels. Totally rotten content.
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pixar:Ready...ACTION!!
Disney:CUT!! sorry.....we are changing the story line......it needs animated chickens and mice! - SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hey Jobs, see about firing Michael Eisner"
----
Eisner's been gone for several months. Bob Iger is CEO of Disney. - link470, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I mean, it's too bad disney doesnt have any money....oh...oh wait
- dbpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well this sucks.
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My respect for Jobs is starting to wane. Disney is a corporate conglomerate bent (like *AA) on extracting every last cent from consumers for its "content". There is, however, a slight possiblity that Jobs could become an opinion leader with an ability to inject some common sense into this whole DRM/content ownership mess. I'm going to wait and see on that one.
- dallen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pixar was owned by LucasArts. Jobs bought it from Lucas in the 80's for $10 million. Pretty good return
- optimusprime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh no. please don't ruin it for everyone, disney (i lost all faith in disney a long long time ago). hopefully pixar will still be run separately from the assness that is disney. terrible, terrible news.
