- nevenmrgan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26That looks pretty, and it's completely ruined by all the bragging. Also, I get to set options for the smoke? Have they learned nothing from Apple's "it's just magic" approach? What, I'm going to be burning pointless discs to show it off to my friends?
They say, "and really, what else are you going to do while you’re burning a disc?"
Surf the web. Browse iPhoto. Work in Zend Studio. You know, everything I do on the computer *anyway*. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Why bother paying $15 for all this smoke and mirrors, when "Burn" is a free download? http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21992
Besides when a disk is burning I'd rather use my time and modern graphics card to actually do stuff. - jarinudom, on 03/31/2008, -5/+17"Why bother paying $15 for all this smoke and mirrors, when "Burn" is a free download?"
Because it's COOL :) - OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Just so you don't have to visit the page...
it's a CD/DVD burning app for OSX (like Disk Utilitiy), but it draws fancy smoke on your desktop over the application's window that will interact with your mouse. just in case you were getting bored waiting for those CDs to finish. - timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11So, it's shiny and has burning effects.
Sounds like it's all smoke and mirrors. - nevenmrgan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Some look comparable. This may be an entirely fanboy comment, but Apple tends to set very high UI standards. I don't mean that they "enforce" them, but that crummy-looking apps on OS X stick out like a sore thumb and get as much love as one.
If you're making a serious OS X app, you're starting with a nice set of controls, and those you add yourself better be nice as well. - ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13It is cool, but it requires a real graphics card, which means the brand new MacBooks and Intel macs with integrated graphics can't take advantage of it. That is very disappointing for MB and mini owners I'm sure.
- tdkpetrus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12When I work, I want an efficient Interface, not a gimmicky one. When I play, I don't see the interface. When I burn discs, I don't play with the burn software but browse the internet or go afk.
It looks cool, but I think just like most of the XGL/Compiz features, it's something that looses it's appeal after a few minutes. - pigonthewing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@adinb:
The problem is that creating gimmicky smoke effects requires time and effort from the developers. That same time and effort could have been used to improve other parts of the software.
The end user pays for it, either in dollar cost, or in reduced functionality/efficiency of the program or interface. - seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It doesnt catch itself on fire.
- reverbhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6>yawn<
What sort of idiot would think smoke coming out of an app is cool?? Who actually sits and watches the percentage of a disc burn anyway?
There are other things to do or watch at the same time you know, after all we don't own single tasking OS's anymore, right? - diamondg14, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Pointless… sure. But fun indeed. If it does what it is supposed to and makes someone chuckle once in a while, then I personally think it is worth it. Plus I went for the Zot.
- chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8its not just the smoke. read the rest of the blog. from what i read, its a single window burnin app. theres no options. you drop files on, and it then determines what disc to do. drop a cds worth of mp3s, it asks if you want an audio cd or data disc. drop a few films on, asks if you want a dvd, or a data dvd. its simple. the smoke is overkill, but i loved XGL. im a sucker for cool interfaces.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's not epic - just utterly pointless for an application which burns cd's. Now if my screen literally caught on fire from it being "toasted", I'd be impressed. For the most part this is the biggest waste of development time for a cd burning app.
- gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8imikedaman: the iMac's have real video cards in them. As do the MacBook Pros. The MacBooks and Mini's however use the crappy integrated Intel Video, so yes, they are screwed.
- kohlmannj, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16Pointless. Just like this comment. What's wrong with Disk Utility, anyway?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'm with you 100%. I'll pay for an extremely optimized and easy to use interface. A smoking application is really lame and overkill. I want my cd, and then I want to do something else. I could care less if it smokes.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10RTFA
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7As if burning cd's and such didn't already take up enough processing power....
Seriously, that's just the most stupid thing I've seen/heard. "Hey guys, my app actually smokes when it's burning a CD!" -- that's corny. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@adinb
If I were to have "fun" with smoke using fluid dynamics, it's going to directly affect the processing and burning of a disk. Why? Because fluid dynamics takes a lot of float (or if it's non-optimized, perhaps a double) calculations over typically a rather large matrix to make it seem more realistic. Now, even if I were to disable it, the application would be bloated an extra X kb to support an utterly useless function which 90% of the users won't use. It's one thing to include a fun little game which uses hardly any cpu (think pong/checkers/etc), but the fact that you're incorporating in a rather new technology which a lot of the core target users can't use -- is just sad. Bad business practice to say the least. - Dithre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Pure gimmick.
- Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5BLiSS, people missing your humour is your fault.
http://digg.com/tech_news/It_s_all_about_me:_Why_e-mails_are_so_easily_misunderstood - MacHarborGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4what's next, Roxio updates Toast for mac adding the guy from Mortal Kombat on the bottom of the screen saying "Toasty!!!"
Disco isn't a program I would use, since I am an experienced enough user to make good use out of Disk Utility, but for people that are not as experienced, this program should be quite useful, and they eye candy while the disc burns actually looks kind of fun. - musti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"* Relatively modern Mac with real graphics card required. " plus some cash, of course.
To...burn...stuff?
Wait, to 1) pay for something I can do from the command line or from the Finder or from the OS-supplied Disk Utility or from gazillion of open source or freeware apps, and, 2) watch eye-candy while doing this.
OK.
Just imagine the labour that went into this. Sigh. - rgov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I predicted this on 20 August 2006: http://rgov.org/20060820/i-dont-forgive-you/
Is particle-based smoke effects really an epic event? I mean, the algorithm for doing this has been known for ages; applying it to an overlay window doesn't take that much, e.g. http://processing.org/learning/examples/smokeparticlesystem.html - imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9The new Intel Macs can handle games like Half-Life 2 and CoD2 at blistering framerates, and you think it can't handle a little smoke? Okay then.
- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As a Mac user, I am totally blown away by how amazing, and pointless, this is.
- adinb, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Useless OpenGL animations to amuse me while waiting for a burn to finish......priceless. :)
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I think it's neat. If you read, you can blow into the mic and the smoke will flail. :O
- adinb, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@phelixthekhat -
Then disable the option. No one is going to be made to have the fun fluid/smoke effects. It just something sortof fun to play with that *shouldn't* impact CPU usage/burning.
With essential features like spanning, this app covers all the basics. The addition of irreverent/useless animations are just a fun bonus to amuse those of us that are bored.
Remember this is a $15/$25 app to do all the basics of burning--and meet the needs of 90% of us that would have had to get "Toast". - tashpool, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It's all eye candy, but if you have the computer to take advantage of it, very cool. Submitter, a little more description for the title would be nice next time.
- AaronCompNetSys, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4All you negative commenters so just missed the hype train. It whizzed by with a Web2.0 bumper sticker.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same here. I'm wondering who sits there doing nothing when they're burning a disc. If I'm not doing something else on the computer, I'm off taking care of something else in my house.
It's insane how many people NOW want it because of this feature. This seems to be the case with many Mac users. Too many of us are more interested in the visual vs. functionality. - Modulo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@imikedaman: RTFA, those are the recommendations of the creators of the software.
- addicted44, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4The application is compatible with all macs. However, the fancy smoke effects are not compatible with all macs. Even on computers which can display the effects, the option to turn them off is available.
The main point of this app is that it is a really fast and easy way to burn CD's/DVD's with a single window interface (like AppZapper). Over that, they are adding some fun effects. The effects do not take away from the app, and for some, it adds to the app. So why would you complain about it?
Toast might be great for you (and its great for me) but some just want an easy to use app to burn stuff, and that is what this is.
Check your facts before you go about bashing developers... - Pliep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Totally useless eyecandy. They must be Windows developers.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"If I want a game, I'll get a game. If I want fancy effects I'll get an iTunes visualiser. The smoke's only there to hide the fact that this application is pretty poor and certainly not worth the money."
That's a brave statement to make if you haven't tried it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Hooray, yet more proof that the developers on the My Dream App panel really aren't up to the job. There's a lot more to software development than just pure coding and these guys have proved that good programs are born from good ideas.
If I want a game, I'll get a game. If I want fancy effects I'll get an iTunes visualiser. The smoke's only there to hide the fact that this application is pretty poor and certainly not worth the money.
I will NEVER trust someone who's made their name in DELETING data to help me to back it up. I've already got Toast and it doesn't need to have stupid, useless effects to get data onto a disc for me.
I love the way that the developers are placing greater importance on fancy graphics than they are on making it compatible with all Macs. There's talk on the linked page that many of the new Intel Macs aren't supported by this application. - kafka47, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I am *****.
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I think it's a cool idea... I don't mind a little desktop embellishment (as long as it doesn't bog down the system and make you want to turn it off).
But I'm a little annoyed that it took me a couple of minutes to figure out what the heck this article was about. Haven't they ever heard of screenshots or video previews? - adinb, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2If you think the effects are so useless, why do you care if they're enabled on OSX boxes with a graphics card? They never said the app was incompatible, just the extra graphics (which you first state are pointless and distracting).
And how much is a license for toast? ~8 times the price of this app, if memory serves correctly. And from a check of the features list, it seems that this app will be missing very few things that toast *does* do. - gaoshan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I think the smoke is very cool. Love it and I hope that future apps will have similarly striking visuals... adds a little spice to the mix.
That said, I'll still stick with Disk Utility for disk burning. It fulfills my requirements 9 times out of 10 and I'm not willing to pay for the 1 out of 10 times that this app might makes things smoother/cooler. - toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -19/+14marked as lame, seeing as the title and description give little to no info.
- smoothmedia, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Thats pretty slick
- jarinudom, on 03/31/2008, -15/+8I am very glad I got in on the MacZOT pre-order :)
- AndreGerber, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Why can't linux apps look that that? :'(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Did anyone else see how its for mac.. buried as LAME
- kupodan, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3yes I'm glad I got in on it as well!
- Dames, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Very very interesting.
- AlanLivingston, on 10/12/2007, -19/+9Jeez... I really don't understand you fanbois...
