- ekiwi, on 10/12/2007, -10/+82So the mystery is solved. It was a Cisco VOIP phone all along.
I never believed for a second. Brian you are a wanker, and Gizmodo for your self-serving publicity stunt you can get *****. Pathetic! I won't be back. - virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -10/+60Now it's official, I have 17892100 and 1 reasons to hate Gizmodo.
- camkerr, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40its stuff like this which is why he no longer works for wired magazine
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33people that frequent that site must enjoy getting jerked around.
- nerfevolution, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35Wow, this just keeps getting worse. This story link now redirects to a Gizmodo post on U.S. Airlines. The redirect URL is:
http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/cellphones/the-iphone-lives-but-the-trademark-belongs-to-cisco-222236.php
while the iPhone post is now at:
http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/cellphones/the-iphone-lives-but-the-trademark-belongs-to-cisco-222336.php
Notice how the 6 numbers at the end of the URL have been changed just so slightly in the iPhone post, from 222236 to 222336; in other words, a 2 became a 3 so that this Digg page no longer links to the story it was intended to..
This was clearly an attempt to fool the Digg community and prevent this headline from hitting the front page. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31Gizmodo works in mysterious ways, the story link no longer works correctly.
Next best thing; http://www.gizmodo.com/ - EatingPie, on 10/12/2007, -9/+34Actually, they made a damn good point by doing what they did.
I mean, in ALL the sites, and ALL the articles about iPhone... NOBODY did a simple check to see if Apple even owned the Trademark? Especially with all the trademark and patent chasing that goes on around Apple central.
Talk about blogger blowing it with mindless hype-whoring and rumor mongoring. No real journalism, or real investigative reporting! Isn't that what reporters and bloggers are supposed to do... investigate?
-Pie - scorpshockey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30The tiny shred of respect I had for Gizmodo just vanished.
- driftwood07, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19i dislike gizmodo.
- time2go, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19dang...too much writing...take it easy man.
- EatingPie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21The original post said "it's not what you think."
How is that deceptive?
-Pie - nanabite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Aren't all iPods "mobile"?
- BrianPower, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I don't think Mr. Lamb would go that far, this happens a lot with Gizmodo stories after they add a new story to their site. Their setup is rather wack that way. We get the point though, as the digg description gives us the required info. Getting back to the story though, this brings a new meaning to; bring the Lamb to the slaughter. This whole iPhone things was a pure amateur move on his part.
- buuch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14got 99 problems but the iPhone ain't one.
- notorious., on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Did anyone actually believe that the "iPhone" was going to be released this Monday? Like, truthfully?
- writedawg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16I just love the fact that homophobic dickwads think it's acceptable to talk like that.
Grow up little-man. - gvonk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Like I said in the Gizmodo thread, this looks like Robert Summa all over again, only this time the error is not just one of scale; rather, the entire post was deceptive.
- zip22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9but it wasn't a rumor.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+20I know some of you are really mad and think that Gizmodo is the worst person since the Anti-Christ. But just face it, you got ***** owned.
- Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7so long credibility
- fintheman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13I laughed :)
Dugg because the internetz needs some humor every now and then instead of everyone hawking around for any bit of news on a new product.
Live life, smile and get off the internet every now and then. - EatingPie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"How about a Digg ban on Gizmodo?"
So you're suggesting group censoring of Gizmodo... because you don't like them?
-Pie - subterfu9e, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This is just pathetic, whether it was targeted at fanboys or not. Deliberate misreporting just kills your credibility.
- dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I agree...Gizmodo is now off my list of regularly visited news sites. If they wanted to make a point, they simply could have written a story about how Apple doesn't own the iPhone patent and left it at that. Leading people along for days in an effort to generate site traffic is pretty lame.
And it's not just that they're playing off the hype of the supposed iPhone (and summarily pissing off all the Apple fanboys)...it's the fact that they would manipulate it to this level. How can anyone trust them not to just make another joke when the next big story comes along? - charlesnorbert, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Brian Lamb is a dink.
- time2go, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9This isn't a MMPRPG or a first-person-shooter or any other context where getting "owned" is a fitting description. In truth, a greedy blogger wanted to get page hits with specious (look it up) information.
- Dolomite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4bye bye Gizmodo... you are banished from my favorites.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5http://daringfireball.net/linked/2006/december#mon-18-jackass_lam
- axemachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Exactly. How many rumor stories are out there about the lastest thingamaginga that apple is going to come up with!?
Being angry at Gizmodo for making a fool of you. Childish. - TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Common. I thought it was funny. I was getting excited for a while, but I just laughed when I read his cop out.
- DPimp1262, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Wow. you know I just thought of something. Apple tried the whole phone thing before. Motorola made quite a few iTunes phones and I know what your thinking that's not a true apple product the new one is going to be completely different and is going to blow all other phones out of the water but think about something for a sec. As revolutionary as apple is they are still at the same time very cautious as to how much untested hardware they produce. Take the ipod for example sure you could say that that was a complete turn in the other direction but really think about it. The original was nothing more then an old 5 gig laptop drive with a simple and cheep control system.
Now compare that to this rumored phone that people have been crazy for apple to make for about as long as cellphones have existed. To make a successful phone it has to be a full on world phone with 3G, edge, bluetooth, wifi, at least 4 gigs of memory, robust video functionality a damn good camera because you know if the isight is any proof apple has to put a camera in it that'll make SLRs cry, touchscreen, loads of other features and on top of everything it has to be thinner then a SLVR. Christ that's a lot to put in that tiny little guy. Can you imagine the amount of R&D that would have to go into that ESPECIALLY since apple has no experience in half the stuff I mentioned. Also to top everything the market for phones is beyond flooded with extremely competitive companies with just as much if not more capital than apple who are dedicated solely to the creation of cell phones. This isn't the mp3 player market. There are already some amazing phones out there.
So with all that apple has to top all of those companies, somehow keep the price semi reasonable and to top it all off they could get the phone 100% right and it could bite them in the ass and flop. I don't know I just think that this whole phone business has the same chance as apple bringing back the newton. There are just some things that are just too big of a risk to make. - winnopeg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I guess so.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10To further confuse the situation the Apple.com homepage now gets the top hit on Google for the search term "iPhone" under the URL "eworld.com" as of midnight 17th December 2006: http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=iphone&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
- traviswalters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gizmodo's joke was very funny, and digg's reaction makes it even better. I laughed quite a bit.
- orgnccmpnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thank the great good lord that you guys wasted so many digg posts, burying so many other great stories with BS iPhone rumors.
When is Digg going to make a "gossip and rumors" or a "hearsay and conjecture" category? - mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It was a trick.. Much like Joystiq's "HUGE industry news at midnight", which turned out to be that the wii was in production.
- DPimp1262, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4And to top it all off do you think apple would release something that big like an apple phone at any other event besides a keynote by Steve with a whole bunch of hype on their website about a week prior? Remember the ipod speakers? Those aren't even half of what the iphone buisness is supposed to be and it got lots of hype prior to release.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And that means so much coming from a person like you.
- incongruity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4See, if I thought it was all just fun and games, woo-hoo, make the fanboys feel like asses, I'd be laughing too -- but this just strikes me as a cheap move to drive traffic their way and boost ad revenue and page views, etc. etc. And that makes the folks at gizmodo a bunch of asses.
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No, they didn't. They tried. But some of us didn't get our hopes up.
- cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Gizmodo is rank!
- DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4gizmodo == teh suck :-/
- EatingPie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@gvonk.
You've practically answered the question in you own post! Gizmodo very likely did have insider information, and were bound by a non-disclosure agreement until Monday. After all, they posted the news at Midnight, so they revealed it at the soonest possible time.
-Pie - Kenji32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3All us who believed Gizmodo = PWNED.
- palillont, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Engadget FTW!
- gvonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, come on. If he couldn't say "Cisco" (because of some NDA/press embargo), he couldn't say "iPhone" either. Both are trademarks owned by the same company. He left it off because the headline/story were undeniably designed to refer to a rumored Apple product. He even tagged the post "Apple" (now removed). If it wasn't meant to be deceptive, why do that?
- molecool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Same here - I won't be back on Gizmodo - they lost all credibility in my mind. Don't have time to spend online reading about ***** rumors.
- axemachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you think they care!? Cry me a river, LOL.
- axemachine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't see the fault of Gizmodo. After all, have anyone seen a real apple cellphone!? I'm tired of vapor talk. See to believe.
- yavoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder what kevin rose has to say about all of this. He'll probably keep his mouth shut this time, though. There's always MacWorld...
