- evensong, on 01/28/2008, -2/+18The "official" iPhone Dev Team is deleting anyone's post that details this. So I'll post it here.
When Nate True released his jailbreak for 1.1.3, the dev team trashed his release as a leak, as inferior, and illegal. They promised a better, superior version of the jailbreak. This is what they promised would be superior.
Unlike Nate True's jailbreak, which has a GUI and is completely automatic, the dev team release require you to MANUALLY SCP into your phone to upload files, MANUALLY SSH into your phone to type up commands, then download the 1.1.3 firmware over EDGE. All in all, this "superior" method requires nearly twice the time with double the effort for the same effect. It fixes NONE of the bugs in Nate True's jailbreak. You don't have locate me function in Google maps, you don't have hybrid map, BSD subsystem and SSH become screwed after this as well, and of course Edge becomes bugged also.
Every one of these bugs have a fix. But you would think this "superior", "official" release by the dev team would fix these bugs. The dev team these days has strayed far from their roots. Legality is thrown out the window anyways when you're cracking Apple's disk images. So why is there a need to protect us from "copyright infringement"? - KennMac, on 01/28/2008, -2/+14You have no idea what you're talking about. It's a complete 1.1.3 jailbreak. It downloads the new 1.1.3 firmware and hacks it before uploading it to your phone. That's not a patch and you're a moron.
- Rustymetal, on 01/28/2008, -1/+11The Dev team is just a bunch of IRC junkies that love nothing more then grade school drama. I love them for their efforts and hacking the iphone but they are really just a bunch of kids that only know how to cry.
Not to mention, they boast way too much. They say they had the jailbreak on the first day of 1.1.3 relesed and they say currently they know 2 methods of jailbreak, soft upgrade is the one that is released. - inactive, on 01/28/2008, -15/+22Inaccurate. This is NOT a 1.1.3 Jailbreak, it's a patch for 1.1.2 which adds the 1.1.3 features. You NEED a 1.1.2 phone to use this.
- AtomB, on 01/28/2008, -1/+7it is a jailbreak because they take the 1.1.3 update and hack it before it's installed to the iphone. It doesn't just have some new features it has all the features and it even says 1.1.3 in settings.
- yeahright, on 01/28/2008, -0/+5i didn't know AT&T was in Canada....
oh wait. It's not. - comradeTJH, on 01/28/2008, -2/+6I'd wait until a "iTunes upgraded 1.1.3" can be jailbroken since this method doesn't upgrade the baseband and you could guess that the combination of an older baseband with newest software could cause unexpected behavior - not to mention issues with future upgrades.
- pyrates, on 01/28/2008, -0/+4You're confusing unlocking and jailbreaking. I want to install third party apps without having to pay apple any more money. It is my device. Oh and I'm in Canada, so because apple just doesn't sell it unlocked, I had to unlock it, which requires it to be jailbroken. Not a big deal but it's apples loss and my gain.
- EvilJelloMan, on 01/28/2008, -1/+5Even worse - on the hackint0sh.org forums, they have a sticky post begging for donations to the dev team. When the dev team announced they had a jailbreak but weren't going to release it, people rightfully went ***** in the forums, saying "why the ***** are you taking donations if you aren't going to share what you find?"
The dev team deleted every single one of these replies from their "shilling for donations" thread. The dev team are a bunch of elitist grade-school douchebags, and they deserved to have one of their own leak the soft update and get all the credit. If they weren't so secretive and dropped the "better than you" attitude, these things might not happen. - orph3us, on 01/28/2008, -0/+3one more thing to convince you that this is not a complete 1.1.3 update.... Even with this method, the soft update kind of breaks your terminal. If you had previously changed your password (at least this is what happened to me) it no longer works. Using passwd doesn't work... Also, to get google position location working you have to get navizon and toggle invisibility on (which also didn't work for me because installer.app kept crashing when I tried to install it) ... I say if you enjoy your jailbroken phone, don't update. Wait until there is a full jailbreak for pure 1.1.3 phones... There possibly won't ever be. In which case, I hope third party apps are able to be released easily. Maybe someone can hack the key that Apple requires to get applications on to your phone? We'll see...
- tfstone, on 01/28/2008, -3/+6Stay away from this one as far as you can.
- Nath4n, on 01/28/2008, -1/+4Exactly!
- pyrates, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2That is nate's release, the official release is compatible with apple's sdk nkikta. Nate's isn't.
- br0ken1128, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2I used nate's release which allows you to go from 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 .. not sure if this dev team release is different, but 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 worked fine.. last time I tried to go to 1.1.2 I had a heck of a time.. but I'm always one of the first to try and I think the process had issues.
- KennMac, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2Triangulation is easily fixed by installing the LocateMe app from Installer. You can even uninstall it, and it will remain fixed.
- KennMac, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2Easily fixed by installing the LocateMe app from Installer. Read.
- pyrates, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2and your reasons for this?
- Rustymetal, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2yeah but it does not include baseband firmware update.
- pyrates, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2I think the iphone one includes a pptp/l2tp vpn client. So the ipod touch should have it too. It is in settings/preferences.
- billjjones, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2I did the dev team hack on my touch and it worked. I did not pay the $20 to Apple. I do have the wobbles and webclips. It took a while for my apps to show up. I'm not sure if the installer was working in the background or what.
AFPd and Terminal aren't working for me. Terminal rejects my password. AFPd just won't start. - AtomB, on 01/28/2008, -1/+2I have tried both Nate True's method and this method and Nate True's worked the best for me. This method just crashed my iPhone and reset all my settings. Be sure to upgrade from 1.1.2 instead of 1.1.1 and everything should work great, mine sure does!
- dandiemer, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1AFPd .2 that is in the Installer.app isn't compatible with 1.1.3. The current version (not available in the repos) is .3 and does work with 1.1.3
- ketha, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Not really. Nate's gone off piste. I'm not sure who is in the right but I'm sticking with the Dev team as there's more of them, so more chance of things working.
- ketha, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Nice.. tried Nate's and it was buggy. Tried this one and it seems to work pretty prefectly. How I did it
1. Using Indpendence downgraded to 1.0.2
2. Re-virginized
3. Using Independence upgraded to 1.1.1
4. Installed App.Tapp, and OKtoPrep
5. Upgraded to 1.1.2 (turned on Airplane mode and ran Anysim 1.1.2u)
6. Reinstalled 'Installer.app' (as it has dissapeared), BDS Subsystem.
7. Loaded Dev Teams patch, ran.
8. Rebooted into itunes
9. Rebooted again for luck
10. Worked. - pyrates, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1Their release preserves the nikita sdk. Nate's doesn't. There's a reason to use theirs. Plus, people wanted it and so they got it. If you want an easier version, add modmyifone.com's iphone repo and it has an installer for it that does it for you automatically. You gonna complain about it now?
- nuudles, on 01/28/2008, -1/+2Just looking at the scripts for what Nate True's jailbreak and the official jailbreak do, Nate True's really does look like a thrown together version of the official one. The reason that more stuff works out of the box with Nate's jb is that he links the /private/var/mobile directory to /private/var/root directory, which increases compatibility, but could cause problems with official SDK apps in the future. Since applications run as the "mobile" user now, permissions problems could occur with trying to use the root home directory instead of keeping the two directories separate like the official jailbreak does. Personally, I stuck with the official jailbreak, which requires more work, but is more future-proof instead of Nate True's jailbreak (which I did install when it first came out) that seems more of a quick hack to overcome some of the initial problems inherent to the 1.1.3 changes made by Apple.
- heystoopid, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1It would appear unlocked Iphoneys is now close to one million and rising fast !
If god wishes to hit the ten million mark by Christmas '08 then he will have to take the hand off the throat of that which feeds him ! - inactive, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1Does anyone know if you revert back to 1.1.2, jailbreak, then upgrade to 1.1.3, if you can get the mail, maps, and other new apps for the iPod back on?
- KennMac, on 01/28/2008, -1/+2Way to not know what you're talking about! NateTrue's release used the same exact code that the dev team realeased. Why? Because he's ON THE DEV TEAM. Instead he release his own version prior (which happens to violate Apple copyrights), undermining the team, so he could rake ad-revenue by directing traffic and questions to his site. He was kicked off the team for this.
- ThankTheCheese, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1yeah the touch can use VPN natively. my iPhone has problems connecting to my unii's VPN (I can't get out of the intranet), but that is likely a proxy issue with the Uni's servers.
- br0ken1128, on 01/28/2008, -2/+3isn't this really just a soft update that copies some stuff over from 1.1.3 to a 1.1.x phone? I did this already and indeed it says 1.1.3 and it has all the nifty things from 1.1.3 but the modem/baseband is the older one and google maps doesn't work as well as it should.
Still pretty nifty.. I saw in the process "decrypting" .. does that mean they've managed to open up the ipsw file? what would be nice is some way to make our own flashing software.. open the ipsw, mod it and then flash the phone with an already opened firmware :) - RBrenner14, on 01/28/2008, -1/+2Video guide for 1.1.3 Jailbreak: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8fwUd2xyK8#GU5U2sp ...
- luddep, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1Got 1.1.3 jailbroken with 1.1.2 baseband working just like it should, INCLUDING google maps with LOCATION (although its not that exact in Sweden..) - no big fixes needed like you do with Nate True's jailbreak (which also broke my itunes wifi store).
It's a bit annoying to install - but if you know what you're doing its a breeze (also helps if you got wifi). - CopyNinja, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1I may be buying a touch soon, but i need to know one thing. Are there any VPN clients for the ipod touch that will allow me to jump on my universities wireless anywhere?
- KennMac, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1You should have followed instructions and upgraded to 1.1.2 first. You're going to have problems using SDK apps when they come out.
- dandiemer, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1Theres fixes for most of those on the Jailbreak sites. The iTunes previews (and you'll probably find that purchased music also) don't play because 1.1.3 has DRM issues. You need to upgrade to 1.1.2 with okto prep once you jailbreak, rejailbreak, and then use the 1.1.3 upgrader to get the music working again.
- DaffyDuck, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Fact: You've never spent any length of time using the iPhone.
Conclusion: Shut the hell up. - mrbutter, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1Speaking of nate's version..I'm having an annoying problem with it.
I run ibrickr, it does its ting, successfully uploads to the ipod and then it says I need to go to installer and do the soft upgrade. But when I click install on the soft upgrade it tells me my "iphone is not ready" or something. I've tried ibrickr twice now and it isn't working.
That is when using 1.1.1 --> 1.1.3.
If I try to go back to 1.1.2 using oktoprep and then loading the 1.1.2 firmware through itunes and then running the java aplet to jailbreak the 1.1.2 it tells me that I needed to run oktoprep in order for it to work - WHICH I DID.
I originally jalbroke 1.1.2 in my aunt's house using windows XP. I am now trying to jailbreak 1.1.2 (well and then try the ibrickr thing to get 1.1.3 from 1.1.2) under Windows Vista.
is the 1.1.2 jailbreaker not vista compatible? - kyc050564, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1I had that problem too when jailbreaking 1.1.2 in iTunes 7.6.
Just run Independence or iBrickr and it'll get you out of recovery mode. - pyrates, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1dont use nate's. it is for the ipone only. the dev team one is for both the iphone and ipod touch.
- orph3us, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1:) i have a full 113 iphone even after all ***** about.. 113 update through itunes vanillaizes every phone that upgrades with it. And no i dont think the baseband can be reverted to pre 113 now because something about the secpack not being hacked/extracted... I do realize that i could have gotten apps working with user modifications but i panicked and updated thinking I could downgrade... anyway... you're saying there is a way to downgrade the baseband? I've been looking all over, and from what I've read, what i just said was correct.. that the 113 baseband hasn't been hacked so it can't be modified... i could be wrong, and pardon my douchery, but if you know of a fix let me know! :D ... ya, i haven't gotten a lot of sleep, I may sound somewhat douchebagesque. Still, I am where I am now, i made a mistake and I'm not aware of any method to fix it now.. that is, im at 113 through itunes... But welll... actually now that i think about it, i couldn't have fixed permissions because my terminal app was not accessible and ssh was off... I didn't know to turn it on beforehand, henceforth the trouble.. Hindsights 20/20 but i think all the readme said was to have bsd and terminal and ssh installed... I didn't realize that the apps wouldn't show up at all after the softupdate, making it impossible to turn on ssh or access the terminal :(
- jcdickerson, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Anyone know a list of apps that are supported in 1.1.3? I have had problems with Locations, iSolitaire, islots and iBlackjack (the installer crashes) as well as iPhysics (doesn't run). I have installed Books, Locate Me, level, mobilefinder, mobiletodo, and DressUp (and BSD and OpenSSH). Looks like most apps install fine, but a full list would be helpful...
- davidkeechen, on 01/31/2008, -0/+1I must be the only person that screwed my iphone up. I've been coasting along with the jailbreaks since 1.0.2 and this update bricked my phone. I thought it would be a common problem but there hasn't been any other accounts that I found. I was forced to use reformat through recovery mode.
- MrViklund, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1I hope Apple will release 1.1.4 soon and stop this hacking.
- dagamer34, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1And now that we have two different jailbreak methods, iPhone users will be double screwed because of conflicts between the two. I'll stick with 1.1.1 thank you very much. And quit squabbling like kids!
- diggboy101, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1don't worry about it this does NOT in any way update your baseband. and even if it did if you have bl 3.9 you can downgrade it right back. and this is TOTALLY safe on 1.1.2 otb because no baseband is updated and you can downgrade back to 1.1.2 no problem
- pyrates, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1What does that have to do with anything? They are separate things. Besides, the only reason to update the baseband is to be able to unlock it. Which is not available right now. Or to use the pseudo gps, which the app locateme does anyways.
- heystoopid, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Didn't think there was an AT&T service in France either ?
- pyrates, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1You can downgrade the firmware AND the baseband. It's been available for quite sometime on how to do that. Your taking offense to it clearly shows your ignorance. Clearly you never read the readme that came with it. No wonder you ***** up your iphone's firmware version. It requires a restored clean iphone, not one thats been hacked to death and no longer conforms to what 113 would expect. Your apps no longer work because Apple changed what user all the apps are run under and the location of some of the libraries. So apps that ran under 112 and previous versions need to be adjusted in how they are programmed. It expects 112 jailbroken because that is how they got around iTunes relocking 113 when 112 is updated to 113. 112 being jailbroken was also a modified 112 firmware image that was written to the main partition. You clearly are not a programmer or unix systems admin. But you don't have to use it if you don't want to.
- ThankTheCheese, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1this may be a stupid question, but if an iPhone is jailbroken, does that mean it is also able to be unlocked, or does that also need to be re-written for 1.1.3?
