- bodgejob, on 09/13/2008, -1/+29it's not just homebrew, for those of us not able to afford the iphone contract, the pwnageTool is great for opening the phone to work on all networks, like all phones should be. And the app store ows a lot to the all the people jailbreaking their phones before the app store. It opened up the door to allow users to really test what the iphone was capable of and user test their apps before the release of the app store. homebrew is good, app store is billiant, together they're awesome!
- EatingPie, on 09/13/2008, -1/+27Background Apps, like constant-connection IRC will NEVER be allowed on the AppStore. Apple has said so. Same for sshd.
And heck, the little guy is a fully functioning Unix once you install the missing pieces (Cydia!). Very nice. I've used it to ssh into work machines from MobileTerminal. And the VNC client blew me away the first time I tried it... it really worked!
The PwnageTool guys own and deserve TONS of kudos. I was really surprised and disappointed by Engadget's original article. Dissing the Pwnage gang is probably the biggest gaffe they've ever made.
-Pie - EH90, on 09/14/2008, -1/+16damn, no windows version yet...
- wush, on 09/14/2008, -0/+13Is it me, or do engadget posts (not necessarily this one) often have the writer directing far too much swagger and 'tude towards people a lot smarter than they are?
- anxcaptain, on 09/13/2008, -0/+12Thanks DEV team!
- digmystuff, on 09/13/2008, -0/+10Yea don't forget the ability to tether and use the phone as an aircard... a feature apple/ATT is considering selling as an ADDITIONAL DATA PLAN for those who don't jailbreak (suckers)
- DeathAxe, on 09/14/2008, -0/+9QuickPwn is for quickly pwning a device, whereas PwnageTool is designed to custom build and tailor the IPSW production process. QuickPwn is more convenient because you do not need to make a full IPSW and use iTunes with it, but your phone/ipod still ends up pwned and jailbroken.
- patbon, on 09/13/2008, -0/+9Video recording, themes, various UI tweaks? Couldn't go back after pwning my phone and getting those things and more.
Also, this guy Thomas Ricker sounds like a huge ***** - r2builder, on 09/14/2008, -0/+8What's the difference between Pwnage tool, and QuickPwn?
- Carlsen, on 09/14/2008, -0/+7The apps aren't the important bit for me - it's the unlock. The contract that goes with an iPhone 3G in Denmark is ridiculously expensive, meaning the end price for 16GB iPhone 3G is ~998 dollars. I like the thing, sure - but that's way, way too expensive.
Still loving my $500 first gen iphone. And still loving Pwnage - damn unlocking got easy all of the sudden. - FuzzyCat, on 09/14/2008, -1/+8
Why is this linked to engadget and not http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ ?? Engadget have fa to do with it. - Heaiser, on 09/13/2008, -0/+6While I love the app store it doesn't fill all the gaps that I want out of my iPhone. Apple's sdk is way too restricting and a good portion of my favorite features for the phone aren't allowed by Apple.
- KingChronic, on 09/13/2008, -0/+6loving the new QuickPwn UI (on the iPhone)
- ErickStevenson, on 09/14/2008, -0/+5Wow seriously? I think it is very significant that you can jailbreak the iPhone/Touch. There are a lot of free software that actually makes Iphone and Ipod Touch more fun and worth it.
- Almadiel, on 09/14/2008, -0/+4I don't own a mac, and I don't plan to spend several hundred dollars just so I can develop on the iphone. Since apple has shut me out, I have no choice but to develop on a jailbroken device. On top of that, there are a lot of things apple won't allow on their store: emulators, themes, system tweaks, background applications, and basically anything that modifies the behavior of the device itself.
- Firespray1138, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4Yes but they took it off of the AppStore.
- brad016, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3Cool, I'll be stoked when they jailbreak the 2nd Gen iPod Touch. Go DevTeam!
- ratsg, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3no it doesn't.
- xero9, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3Here's on wicked app that won't work.. EVER.. InstaMap or whatever it's called. Tracks your position via GPS and records it, so people can see a trail of where you've been and where you are. Problem is, I need to leave my phone on for this to work. It'd be nice if I could leave it in my pocket and have it still function. I don't think their push notification will work in this case.
- FieroRocky, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3I use it more to activate my work paid ATT wireless account (that has the data turned off). This way I don't have to carry two phones and a ipod. I sync my work calendar and contact list and use wifi for data.
- mugupo, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3So far still no window version yet, i wonder should trade my 2g iphone 1.4 unlocked over a 3g iphone and then using this software to unlocked it, will i able to paying data fee with at&t?
- ltkk, on 09/14/2008, -0/+2Just installed in my 2g iphone. It works great. Best to remove all media (songs, videos, apps) first. Much more stable & the genius thing is funny.
- 0ldmankdude, on 09/14/2008, -1/+3for anybody with an ipod touch:
http://www.quickpwn.com/2008/09/jailbreak-ipod-tou ... - Radan, on 09/14/2008, -1/+3Well, Apple will release a push-service which all apps can use which should in theory solve most cases where background processes are needed. In fact, if it works it should actually be in many cases better than background processes since it doesn't take up as much of the processing power or shorten the battery life like regular background processes in many cases would.
I can see why Apple decided to do it like this, whether it's the right thing to do or not, is another question, though. - Carlsen, on 09/14/2008, -2/+4Winpwn is usually updated a couple of days after a new Pwnage tool is released.
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2There is a Cydia app called Scrobble that does that. Jailbreak only.
- LordPengwin, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2Will iTunes 8 still work with a jail broken 2.1 iphone?
- starf, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2Nice, I can download voicemail again!
- diggjosh, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2we CAN all just along
- persibro, on 09/14/2008, -0/+2Unlocking aside, jailbreaking the iPhone allows you to use apps that do not adhere to the restrictions Apple has places on the AppStore applications. I'm STILL waiting for an IM client that doesn't disconnect me when I try to go to a link someone just sent me!
- djrbx, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1I don't know why your getting dug down.. If looked in the right places, a person can still download that app
- dn11, on 09/14/2008, -0/+1I couldn't get QuickPwn to work (it kept telling me my firmware wasn't compatible...?), but PwnageTool worked fine and 2.1 seems to be a big improvement.
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1For Engadget to suggest that jailbreaking is not relevant is to not understand what it means to have the iPhone open.
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -0/+13G has not been unlocked (sim unlocked), only software jailbroken (illegit apps). ie you still have to use 3G with ATT.
- mugupo, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1I not planning to use 3g anyway, so if i unlocked the 3g iphone can i use with my att service without data? also does unlocked 3g iphone can use those itune iphone software?
- visarya, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1i dont know if anyone else noticed .... but you dont need to be in DFU mode in itunes 8 to install custom firmware ...i verfied this and iphone working fine
- donna1234, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Firmware 2.1 now out for the iPhone and iPod touch

;) - bromine, on 09/17/2008, -0/+0If you were to quickpwn on a mac, would you be able to still sync with your pc and never touch that mac again?
- stone2020, on 09/15/2008, -1/+1http://www.pwnagetool2.com
- alexpnx, on 09/14/2008, -2/+1it's you and your annoying signature again!
- neoproelium, on 09/14/2008, -4/+3Where is the windows version?!
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -3/+1Cause the blog site crashes firefox
- wush, on 09/14/2008, -3/+1The official Last.fm application can't even scrobble iPod plays due to the background process deal. A travesty.
- Radan, on 09/14/2008, -6/+2That is actually possible with for example the app named NetShare (there's probably more) which works really well.
- megamod, on 09/13/2008, -6/+2I visited the linked page on my iPhone and it self destructed!!!
WTF...DAMN YOU APPLE! fail safe plan? - mmockett, on 09/13/2008, -7/+2Just remember kids...
http://www.comedycentral.com/videos/index.jhtml?vi ... (5.41 minutes in) - slickrate, on 09/14/2008, -7/+2This messed up a legit app I bought from the store. It wont load anymore. Its just the one app though, but still..
- wwwluckyro, on 09/14/2008, -9/+1QuickPwn is for Windows only, for now.
- mrsteveman1, on 09/14/2008, -11/+2More significant? The dev team doesn't ***** dictate what i can and can't run on the phone, Apple does.
