- evan119, on 12/27/2007, -6/+19The author should get a clue about UMPCs before writing about them. The Apple Portable Device that he talks about would be ***** compared to current UMPC models. Also, the author makes it clear that he has NEVER used a UMPC before when he claims that no UMPC uses a Microsoft OS. Hmm, I use several different UMPC models (one from Samsung, one from Asus) constantly at work, and have tested several others. I've never seen one that DOESN'T use Microsoft OS. Maybe he got confused by the Microsoft Windows logo that the OS displays when you turn the unit on. When he was doing research on UMPCs for the past 6 months as he claims, it would have helped him to research current industry models and future trends.
- happyseamonster, on 12/27/2007, -1/+14Whatever Apple does, exciting to be sure, you won't get anything from this guy and his lies about sources etc. Sounds more like a bigfoot site than a tech blog.
- llsethj, on 12/27/2007, -2/+15I am not feeling any of these "guesses".
- superguysteve, on 12/27/2007, -0/+11"Above is a rendition of this new device based on what we know so far"
Translation: The above picture, and accompanying text were pulled directly from my ass... - evan119, on 12/27/2007, -0/+6I couldn't agree more with that; I'm not a Apple fanboy or anything, but I'd hate for Apple to follow Microsoft into that mistake. I can't imagine UMPCs being too long-lasting anyways, sadly. It seems like they'll just gradually get incorporated into cell phones. However, the author of this article has the idea that an Apple UMPC will be an iphone without the phone and more dynamic applications which is even more ridiculous.
- evan119, on 12/27/2007, -0/+4Agreed, but this UMPC isn't a tablet PC at all. In fact, it's light years away
- ariez84, on 12/27/2007, -1/+5How this made the front page, i dont know....o wait nevermind.
- dssstrkl, on 12/27/2007, -1/+5There are a couple of butt-ass ugly Linux-based UMPC's out there. Yes, there are uglier UMPCs than get play on Engadget, amazing as it may seem. In any case, the idea that Apple would follow Microsoft's stupid idea of shoehorning a full desktop OS onto a small form factor is ridiculous. Besides, what would be the point of having two Home buttons and insanely tiny icons? Why do you think the iPhone's icons are so large?
- lukee, on 12/27/2007, -0/+3Buried as inaccurate.
- ScornForSega, on 12/27/2007, -5/+7It's the Pippin portable... which of course will be shortened to PP, but we'll just call it piss.
- digitalpencil, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2I call BS! Where exactly are the sources for this rumored device? Plus, the supposed design is out-of-keeping with Apple's obvious move towards touch-sensitive control, especially when you take into account recent patent applications. I mean, if it was going to be formed in a similar fashion to a Sony ('SNE')?? PSP, then in terms of ergonomics it would be retarded to expect people to use their stubby-ass thumbs across the screen to control the damn thing.. it would just be plain awkward. Buried for making ***** up and not being able to support any of these outlandish claims!
- Scott2, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1Apple portables have always been available as third party tablets - I remember working on one that was a modified PB 190.
- groo68, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1not to be insulting, just to connect it to previous apple products.
- BlueStarr, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1So is anyone still asking themselves the question as too why Apple shutdown ThinkSecret.com ? Instead of having just a few sites like AppleInsider/MacRumors/ThinkSecret, and them being more or less the authority on Apple rumors. You know have every and anyone speculating on rumors and generating more free adverting for Apple. And the quality of the information and the amount has created a nice camouflage and it's uncertain now to know who's info is accurate and who's is not.
- _skin_, on 12/27/2007, -1/+2I can't and won't believe this.
- bgramer1, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1I see this as being a new category expanding Apple's iPod product matrix.
Take a good look at how Apple's iPod product line evolved, and where it is now. "Photos" was a feature until it became ubiquitous in all iPods, then "Videos", and now "multi-touch" which exists in 2 high-end iPod products (iPhone and iPod Touch)
The big question is how to utilize this multi-touch feature in a meaningful way that crosses over into the MacBook/MacBookPro categories in the product matrix. We can already play music, view photos and videos (and more) on the Macs, so where is that sweet spot for multi-touch to be useful? In regards to current consumer interaction patterns, it's hard to find something that's "in-between" because that usually means you're trying to satisfy user requirements in one category and another - and pleasing everyone doesn't always work. It's very possible that this next-gen device could simply be an all-in-one portable media storage/manager(remote)/player device.
Is Apple daring enough to create a "next-gen multi-touch line of devices" that complement the existing product matrix in a similar way that the iPhone and iPod Touch complement Apple's current iPod line up (classic, nano, shuffle)??? Who knows. - RockBandit, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1Man... I want to know where you get your styrofoam from if you think it's worth $100.
- Fanboy1, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1The above picture is a crudely created Photoshop POS. While the tips behind these rumors, this guy's hypothesis's are wild and wacky.
1) they need flash memory for the entire ipod/iphone line
2) they need further developments for the iphone glass - daGUY, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1What a bunch of baloney. Look, I personally think Apple WILL announce a new computer at Macworld - whether it's purely a tablet or an ultra-compact laptop - but this guy definitely doesn't know anything more than we do.
The biggest hole in his argument is that he claims it'll have a 5.2" display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, yet it will run a full version of Mac OS X (he specifically rules out that the device is a new iPhone/iPod Touch or PDA). Can you imagine trying to run Mac OS X on something that small, interacting with it solely through touch? The interface is not at all designed to be used at that size. - moisie, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1If the thing has a screen under about 10" inches I would bet on it being more iPhone/iPod Touch then Mac. The Mac desktop just wouldn't suit such a small screen and would no doubt need to be radically slimmed down to work on such a device anyway. If it's more akin to the OS running on their existing touch devices (even if it doesn't have a touch screen) I would expect a more tailored design. If that's the case I would doubt they want to add a third variation into the mix so would expect/hope it would somehow be linked to them allowing third party apps, something along the lines of a universal binary, perhaps apps could be tailored to run on both the iPhone and this device or one just one depending on requirements.
- flipmeat, on 12/27/2007, -3/+4You can buy a tablet Macbook from a third party right now. Rumortard.
- Phigg, on 12/27/2007, -1/+1Dugg for Apple
- TofuMatt, on 12/27/2007, -0/+0Having walked away from the article knowing nothing more than before I read it, it's clear that this guy mused a bit about what he might like (which also doesn't even sound viable), and then got dugg. There's no (credible) source and nothing to gain from reading this one. Bry plz thx.
- SuchADigger, on 12/27/2007, -1/+1Unless the wording of the article has been edited, the author never says "no UMPC uses a Microsoft OS." The exact quote is "[snip]... Ultra Mobile PC [UMPC] initiative which has unsuccessfully tried to marry Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows OS to a highly portable computing platform."
I read "unsuccessfully tried to marry" as mean that the device hasn't been a success. And it hasn't, mostly for reasons of price. - TomPhoolery, on 12/27/2007, -1/+1If anything, Apple's newest device will be a tablet computer. Probably called iMac touch or something. You'll see...
- rrife, on 12/27/2007, -1/+1"it’s clear Apple will not be using a physical QWERT keyboard for this device"......that's a good idea, a keyboard w/o a Y key would really suck.
- flexprimo, on 12/27/2007, -1/+1Nice to see the Apple rumor mill is spinning up for Macworld. Seems like another typical rumor post to me:
1. Think up potential new Apple product
2. Dig up something that could possibly corroborate it - doesn't matter how much of a stretch
3. Hope your guess is right. Bask in the glory of a bunch of links to your post if it is, state it's still coming but it's just not the right time to announce it yet if it isn't. - fartbuttes, on 12/27/2007, -1/+1Oh no, you caught me using hyperbole! You win 5,000 internets goon sir, you are a hero of Digg.
- Scott2, on 12/27/2007, -1/+1And you make it clear that you didn't read the article beyond a perfunctory glance. The author clearly states that "I have been working on gathering more information about a new Apple (AAPL) portable device from several different sources during the past 6 months." Not to mention the above user's comment.
On another note, I hope this isn't true. UMPCs are not exactly burning up the market, and I hope Apple would know enough not to bother. - groo68, on 12/27/2007, -2/+2It looks more like a newton than an UMPC anyway.
- solidus636, on 12/27/2007, -4/+2I'm hoping it's something like the Modbook.
- fartbuttes, on 12/27/2007, -3/+1It's going to be an expensive piece of crap that has been done before but nobody wanted one until Apple put it in a brushed metal casing and $100 worth of packaging materials.
- Ireland, on 12/27/2007, -11/+5Here's the deal; Apple is going to reinvent the tablet computer at some stage in 2008. My hunch says Macworld seems a little early, given how much other stuff is going on for them right now, but I'd never guarantee it wouldn't happen. If I was a betting man I would say August / September 2008. I personally believe the sweet spot for this device to be 11", but I would be alright if it was 10". That is the right size for loads of reasons, and it would differentiate it from the MacBook and the iPhone / iPod touch enough to make it a viable product. This will be Apple's ultra-portable Mac, and it will be a Mac. Desktop, folders, icons, copy and paste etc.

What is Digg?
