Uhh... no, no it doesn't. Mobile Safari fully supports Javascript. It doesn't support Java, which is an entirely different animal, nor does it support Flash, which is the reason the regular YouTube site doesn't work. - jdoublehcubed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30"Flash based HDD"
Yeah, thats a review I'm really gonna trust. - winnopeg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Upgrading from a 4GB MIni will make the Touch seem like the most amazing thing ever. 1.5" black and white screen be damned!
- Wailord, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22Apple's iPod line has been steadily evolving over the past years since the first iPod was introduced in 2001. Since then, we've seen multiple revisions and eliminations (iPod mini) of each line, slowly migrating into the product lineup we see on store shelves today, the iPod classic, iPod touch, iPod nano, and the iPod shuffle.
One of the latest iPods introduced into the line is the iPod touch, a product which looks to have evolved from the iPhone - labeled as a slimmed down iPhone, or an iPhone without the phone.
Capacity
The iPod touch is available in two flavors, 8 and 16GB. For this "small" reason the product has been heavily slammed by a few large names in the industry. They're saying "why couldn't Apple have put a 160GB hard drive into the device instead of the excessively expensive flash based drives. For this reason, some have been swayed away from purchasing the device, I wasn't one, coming off a 60GB iPod and somewhat "downgrading" to the 16GB iPod touch I haven't felt at all restricted with the storage limitation.
When formatted, the 16GB iPod touch has 14.82GB of space remaining for video, image and audio content. I've heard many claims that Apple is un-fairly advertising its storage capacity, though it's the same with everyone. Companies claim to have a 250GB hard drive when the actual formated capacity is around 230GB - 232GB to be exact.
Slimness and Scratches
As been labeled as the slimmed down iPhone, the iPod touch certainly is. At just 8-mm thin, the touch is much thinner than the iPhone, it feels great in hand and when slipped into my pocket it's so light I can almost forget that it's there. It's amazingly thin and light - the iPod I've always dreamt of.
In the past it has been a scary thought of slipping an iPod into your pocket without a case due to their knack to scratch easily - this problem is now non-existant with the iPod touch. The screen is repellent to scratches. For the purpose of backing up this claim, I ran the point of a sharp needle over the screen of the iPod touch a few dozen times, when looking up at it in the light, no scratching or scuffing was apparent - impressive - I'm considering skipping on a case purchase for this iPod.
Touch Interface
The most apparent new feature to the iPod touch is the touch-based user interface. After five minutes of playing with it I was already in astonishment with how well Apple thought out the UI and general feel of browsing the device.
The touch interface is a great new way to browse your music and navigate around your iPod. When you're browsing through your music while holding the device upright, you can scroll through by moving and dragging your finger, when you turn the device sideways, the iPod touch automatically switches the iPod to CoverFlow view in a horizontal format, allowing you to browse through your music by flicking (quite literally) through album covers. This innovative new way to navigate your music library is great fun and yet another way Apple has integrated its new acquisition of the technology to the product line.
I've found browsing through CoverFlow a very quick and pleasing experience, due to the use of the flash based HDD, flicking through music is rather snappy, this is one area of the device I see the flash hard drive to be very useful. A standard spinning drive would choke and burn under this performance stress.
Battery Life
When you want to preserve battery life while listening to music, you can press the sleep button on top of the device, this shuts off screen power and keeps your music playing. When pressing it again, it wakes the screen and prompts you to move a slider to unlock the iPod to prevent accidental input. This is by far one of my favorite UI enhancements - it works seamlessly and is perfectly executed.
Battery life for video playback is slightly under Apple's estimate. The audio playback time is rather impressive, I've been playing music for 5 hours a day for three days now, and the battery still has around 50% remaining. This was one of of my major concerns with the iPod touch before it arrived - the power required to display such a large display. - mastercheif, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Wow, it's over. digg now has the "CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE BEEN CHOSED TO WIN TWO FREE IPOD NANOS". That is just selling out.
- wotcher, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Site is unsurprisingly dead!
- MrAnderson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16*****, ***** review, pretending you know what you're talking about doesn't work when you're writing for this audience.

YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. - ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14And we should care about what some site called "macguide.woop.tv" says why exactly?
Countless iPod touch reviews have already been done, by much more credible sources. - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+8Boy, these 'standard spinning drives' are totally crap. I should just go ahead and bin all the ones that are in my PC running the latest games and far more intense applications than coverflow. . . . not. Silly reviewer =/

- 35263526, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The server's standard spinning drives must have choked and burned under the stress.
- jhails, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Hardly a detailed review.
Next - Wailord, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8That wasn't really detailed.
At all. - RubberbandLN6, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Not sure why others have not suggested this, but what about media streaming? You only have 16gb of storage, so put some of your favorites on there and then use something like WeBot or Orb to stream the rest of your library over WiFi.
It pretty much gives you unlimited storage, and if you are on a campus where WiFi is pretty much everywhere, it makes it a really nice safety plan. It's not ideal, I mean a 30-40gb Touch would of been ideal, but you know, you work with what you have. - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+6Out of curiosity, why do you need nearly 10 hours of LOTR on your iPod nano?
- Jokermx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Well, I'm not in the mood to read a 1,500 word review, and unfortunately, the page is dead.
Simple as this, is it worth buying, or not? - Wailord, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Wi-Fi
Another large feature headlining is the in-built Wi-Fi in the iPod touch. Wi-Fi is something I've been waiting on for such a lengthy period of time in an iPod, I began to think it would never arrive. Two applications on the iPod built to take advantage of this feature is Safari and YouTube. Safari allows you to browse the web just like in "real form" - just like you're browsing on your desktop machine, while the YouTube application allows you to browse popular videos on the site, or perform a custom search for an exact content match.
Wi-Fi speed is pretty nippy, it's performing a little slower than my Mac Pro desktop in the same position, namely on pages with a bunch of images. The only problem I've had is when I've found myself browsing the web when Safari crashes and takes me back to the home screen. I have noticed a trend of more frequent crashes happening on image heavy web-pages, however it's also happened while entering text in fields on some sites and forums. Because of these crashes, I'd only recommend you use the browser lightly and not load any large scale galleries which could stall the iPod, as crashes will be inevitable at some point.
Disappointingly, the iPod touch Safari browser also lacks support for Java and Flash, meaning unless you're 100% happy with the YouTube browser, you're out of luck to view other video content on the web.
Data Input
The on-screen keyboard is rather impressive at first glance, but becomes a little tedious after using it for a while. It's difficult to develop a suitable typing technique as using your thumbs is difficult due to the small nature of the keys, and using your forefingers makes holding the device awkward to a point. I'm still switching between the two possibilities trying to develop the best technique for me - a little trial and error is in need for this.
Moving to a positive point, the auto correction and auto completion is wonderful. When you're typing a common word the iPod will reveal a possible match underneath the text you're typing, if this is the correct word you're after, it's as simple as tapping the space bar to accept the selection and start on the next word. This is a huge timesaver and makes inroads for general typing difficulty.
Conclusion
I've been very impressed with my iPod touch. Although it lacks in areas such as capacity, Safari reliability, and a difficult on screen keyboard, it makes up for all of this with its smooth user interface which is an absolute joy to play with.
Our advice, if you're drooling over the iPhone, buy the iPod touch now. If you're happy with "just" 16GB of storage and want to upgrade from a previous generation iPod, the iPod touch is perfectly suited - if you need more than 16GB, take a look at the iPod classic (80 & 160GB). - fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Yeah and just what we all needed. It's only been weeks and dozens of reviews, without this one we'd all have been completely *****.
- jayred, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It is MOST DEFINITELY NOT an iPhone - phone. It's way less.
- 3vno, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Site down, but i love my touch!! I have taken it to the gym a few times already, and the 3.5 inch wide screen rocks!! using the web on it is cool too. It would be nice if apple would allow you to add cal events, and added the map app tho. Its was a great buy for me.
- kirk06, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7So weird how people don't get the concept of social BOOKMARKING. You see, the beauty of this site is that I can click the 'digg' button on an article I might like, even if I haven't read it yet...and return at a later time.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The new iPods came out right before my birthday. My wife who is usually at a loss for what to get me asked if she could combine our anniversary and my birthday into a single, more expensive gift. Knowing the new iPods were coming, I agreed. We went to a local Apple store and I inspected the goods.
I liked the new nano, but felt the screen was way too small to watch video on. She offered to wait until later in the month when the iPod Touch was due, but after playing with the similar interface on an iPhone, I decided to go with an 80gb iPod Classic instead.
I usually use my iPod in my car, either to and from work or to listen/watch at lunch. The touch interface is slick but not intuitive while driving like the scroll-wheel is. The amount of storage between the two units was significant as well.
The Touch is a pretty slick device and I may get one once storage is up a bit more, but for now the iPod Classic was a better fit for me. - halik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's not java script, it's an embed tag... fool
- TjLAXattack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I bought one for my girlfriend - neither of us have an iPhone - and I've been presently surprised with the 16gb iPod touch. I don't own any Apple products besides iPods (and the Nike+ kit), so I don't really have any brand loyalty. But this iPod Touch is pretty awesome and has pretty great battery life, which is very important to me.

- diabulos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4What happens when you are on the town and wish to skip a song? with the scroll wheel it is just one quick, blind click, the same for volume. That means you can have your ipod in a rucksack on your shoulders or back, or hanging from your belt in one of those nice covers. With the touch interface you cannot just reach to the ipod and change, you have to see as there is no tactile response, which means pulling out the ipod and looking at it. Many people around the world listen to music in their commutes, and they don't necessarily want to advertise they have a shinny new gadget to thieves....it becomes useless in that scenario (one very common as attested by a quick scan of all the earpod-wearing people in the trains and metros around the world) and actually, just like expensive mobiles, a dangerous lure.....
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yes. I was doubting the storage space at first but I just made a 10gig playlist and filled the other 5 gigs with video and don't miss my old 80gig at all. If you like the iPhone but don't want the phone, it's perfect. Much smaller in person too. I have had one for 2 weeks now (and for those of you that doubt, it shipped earlier than expected).
Do make sure however, the model you buy has Macy Gray on the box. The one with Baily Rae has a defective screen. I had to return the first one I had. - TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Ugh, what I'd give for a 160GB iPod Touch. I don't care if it's twice as thick, I want some goddamn capacity on that beauty!
- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5An even bigger upgrade: First Gen shuffle to 8gig 3rd gen nano. Sadly, I've already filled it up. Of course, the LOTR trilogy probably doesn't help.
- harrisonx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3must have been changed. i copied and pasted from the review 11 hours before you.
- LeonardNimrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Maybe they will eventually but there are some hurdles.
1) Flash 7 for ARM processors is crap.
2) Adobe has done a piss pore job of optimizing Flash 9 for OS X on Macs.
Adobe has mentioned adding native H.264 support to Flash. But will it be for a new mobile version of Flash and will it be made for mobile OS X? This is a good thing but it's still a software solution. Not a big deal on a PC or Mac, but on a handheld this will drain the battery a great deal faster than the H.264 chip on the logic board. I would love to see Adobe develop a Flash chip for faster and lower energy usage for handheld devices. But will they do it? I don't have high hopes. - bobakanush, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5When does it arrive for gods sake?
- SirCrumpet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Uhhh, RAM != Flash Storage in cases like this...
- TheWorm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3i is the chosen one?
- kjk437, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Ummm, it's out now. I have one.
- AndrewWiggin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Funny how people's problem with the touch is that they have an iPod video already. I think Apple is trying to lure more than just the people that have bought the most recent iPod already.
When the next MacBook comes out, I am not going to complain that it is only 15% faster and with double the L2 cache than my current MacBook. - GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Can hardly compare the iPod Touch software to Vista. It's elegant, slick, fast and intuitive. Vista is a turd and you'll never see anything like that coming out of Cupertino. Agreed on doubling the memory. 32gb would be the sweet spot. And yes it's a shame they took away several slick apps and left half the home screen naked. Still love to know why Apple deliberately shipped less of a product than they could of done for the same amount of work. Apple should be grateful for selling a device worth several hundred dollars - never you mind whether we get the iPod Touch or iPhone, just make them the best you can and be thankful for a sale. If AT&T are man handling you then kick them in the nuts and do your own thing. You dont need a company like AT&T that is universally hated to boss you around and spoil your own brand.
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Where did you get that from? This is what the text from the site shows:
"Disappointingly, the iPod touch Safari browser also lacks support for Java and Flash, meaning unless you're 100% happy with the YouTube browser, you're out of luck to view other video content on the web.". - bgfinkel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4mirror? anybody?
- znicket, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'm curious about this. What would you do with that capacity?
I can understand having some selection of movies and tv shows... along with some selection of music... but how much do you need really? I'm happy with 4gb of music and 4 in video. That's enough to get me through those situations where I would use the Touch. - GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'd much prefer the 80gb drive they have in the current Classic. It's thinner than the 160gb drive. 80gb is more than enough for most people.
- 3vno, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22x the stoage space, thinner,I got a great cellphone with great battery life already, cheaper plan too, also i dont want to mod something that i depend so much on. I dont mind two devices, i like it that way. So for me it was a great buy.
O - modusop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm pretty sure this is Apple's plan to sell more iPhones.
- lowededwookie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually Macguide used to be a New Zealand based print magazine until it decided to close up shop for reasons that seem tarded to me but still. It was an awesome mag and is sorely missed considering most of the UK and US print mags are filled with more ads than content (ironically it was lack of advertising that caused the magazine to fold - or so they claimed).
Not sure why they changed from macguide.co.nz to macguide.woop.tv but I wouldn't trash this review simply because of the URL, that's just plain and simple retardation. But then this is DIGG after all. - Trax91, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Coral Cache also works, better too: http://macguide.woop.tv.nyud.net:8080/articles/rev ...
- JDRay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Agreed. It would be a lot more useful to have more memory if they hadn't disabled the disk feature. With it, having 160 gigs (or whatever) of portable storage that also plays music and video, surfs the web and can keep track of my appointments... oh, wait... well, does other stuff... would be great.
- Zippo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2When the 2nd generation of the iPod Touch comes out and has at least a 32GB hard drive, then I'll consider getting one. But until then I'm happy with my 30GB 5G iPod.
- 3adkied, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Agreed. They made it for ME, who has stayed with the nano until a GOOD video device came out.
- planksconstant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2its not just you, but its also not just recently. this has been going on for a loooong time now.
