it's not tied to a *cell phone* company.
3rd party apps have been around for years - (see iPod Linux - http://www.ipodlinux.org/ )
I believe you may be thinking of some other device. Please, try to stay on topic.
Also, linking to a, eh hem, clever oversized without explanation, further details, calls to actions, is the perfect way to get both people interested in your cause and to get the multi-billion dollar international corporation to do exactly what you want.

Uhh... no, no it doesn't. Mobile Safari fully supports Javascript. It doesn't support Java, which is an entirely different animal, nor does it support Flash, which is the reason the regular YouTube site doesn't work.- djpants428, on 10/10/2007, -9/+1yah, stupid bloggers... since when did YouTube use Javascript to play videos? it's always been flash.. Google video, metacafe, and every other video site uses flash.. Missing a point like this makes me distrust this so called "expert opinion"
- cbuddha42, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11) How exactly do you think the website tells your browser to load up flash and point it at the video? Answer: Javascript
2) Adobe has released flash for portable devices complete with video support, so apple should ditch its specialist youtube system and get on that bandwagon.- LeonardNimrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Maybe they will eventually but there are some hurdles.
1) Flash 7 for ARM processors is crap.
2) Adobe has done a piss pore job of optimizing Flash 9 for OS X on Macs.
Adobe has mentioned adding native H.264 support to Flash. But will it be for a new mobile version of Flash and will it be made for mobile OS X? This is a good thing but it's still a software solution. Not a big deal on a PC or Mac, but on a handheld this will drain the battery a great deal faster than the H.264 chip on the logic board. I would love to see Adobe develop a Flash chip for faster and lower energy usage for handheld devices. But will they do it? I don't have high hopes. - halik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's not java script, it's an embed tag... fool

- MrAnderson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16*****, ***** review, pretending you know what you're talking about doesn't work when you're writing for this audience.
"I've found browsing through CoverFlow a very quick and pleasing experience, due to the use of the flash based HDD, flicking through music is rather snappy, this is one area of the device I see the flash hard drive to be very useful. A standard spinning drive would choke and burn under this performance stress."
YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT.- daza, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Boy, these 'standard spinning drives' are totally crap. I should just go ahead and bin all the ones that are in my PC running the latest games and far more intense applications than coverflow. . . . not. Silly reviewer =/
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Where did you get that from? This is what the text from the site shows:
"Disappointingly, the iPod touch Safari browser also lacks support for Java and Flash, meaning unless you're 100% happy with the YouTube browser, you're out of luck to view other video content on the web.".- harrisonx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3must have been changed. i copied and pasted from the review 11 hours before you.
- f54280, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The reviewer is challenged in its nerd side:
"When formatted, the 16GB iPod touch has 14.82GB of space remaining for video, image and audio content. I've heard many claims that Apple is un-fairly advertising its storage capacity, though it's the same with everyone. Companies claim to have a 250GB hard drive when the actual formated capacity is around 230GB - 232GB to be exact."
He is confusing space lost to formatting and the great gigabyte debate
Flash memory comes in power of 2, so on Gb is 1073741824, while hard drive platters have density that depens on the surface, hence the 1Gb is 1000000000 bytes game that hard drive industry plays.
Not at all the same thing. An flash ipod will have 7% more space than a same sized hard-drive iPod.
I'll take everything he says with a rock of salt.

Countless iPod touch reviews have already been done, by much more credible sources.- lowededwookie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually Macguide used to be a New Zealand based print magazine until it decided to close up shop for reasons that seem tarded to me but still. It was an awesome mag and is sorely missed considering most of the UK and US print mags are filled with more ads than content (ironically it was lack of advertising that caused the magazine to fold - or so they claimed).
Not sure why they changed from macguide.co.nz to macguide.woop.tv but I wouldn't trash this review simply because of the URL, that's just plain and simple retardation. But then this is DIGG after all.

Simple as this, is it worth buying, or not?- thatsmyaibo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yes. I was doubting the storage space at first but I just made a 10gig playlist and filled the other 5 gigs with video and don't miss my old 80gig at all. If you like the iPhone but don't want the phone, it's perfect. Much smaller in person too. I have had one for 2 weeks now (and for those of you that doubt, it shipped earlier than expected).
Do make sure however, the model you buy has Macy Gray on the box. The one with Baily Rae has a defective screen. I had to return the first one I had.

- RubberbandLN6, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Not sure why others have not suggested this, but what about media streaming? You only have 16gb of storage, so put some of your favorites on there and then use something like WeBot or Orb to stream the rest of your library over WiFi.
It pretty much gives you unlimited storage, and if you are on a campus where WiFi is pretty much everywhere, it makes it a really nice safety plan. It's not ideal, I mean a 30-40gb Touch would of been ideal, but you know, you work with what you have. - Wailord, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22Apple's iPod line has been steadily evolving over the past years since the first iPod was introduced in 2001. Since then, we've seen multiple revisions and eliminations (iPod mini) of each line, slowly migrating into the product lineup we see on store shelves today, the iPod classic, iPod touch, iPod nano, and the iPod shuffle.
One of the latest iPods introduced into the line is the iPod touch, a product which looks to have evolved from the iPhone - labeled as a slimmed down iPhone, or an iPhone without the phone.
Capacity
The iPod touch is available in two flavors, 8 and 16GB. For this "small" reason the product has been heavily slammed by a few large names in the industry. They're saying "why couldn't Apple have put a 160GB hard drive into the device instead of the excessively expensive flash based drives. For this reason, some have been swayed away from purchasing the device, I wasn't one, coming off a 60GB iPod and somewhat "downgrading" to the 16GB iPod touch I haven't felt at all restricted with the storage limitation.
When formatted, the 16GB iPod touch has 14.82GB of space remaining for video, image and audio content. I've heard many claims that Apple is un-fairly advertising its storage capacity, though it's the same with everyone. Companies claim to have a 250GB hard drive when the actual formated capacity is around 230GB - 232GB to be exact.
Slimness and Scratches
As been labeled as the slimmed down iPhone, the iPod touch certainly is. At just 8-mm thin, the touch is much thinner than the iPhone, it feels great in hand and when slipped into my pocket it's so light I can almost forget that it's there. It's amazingly thin and light - the iPod I've always dreamt of.
In the past it has been a scary thought of slipping an iPod into your pocket without a case due to their knack to scratch easily - this problem is now non-existant with the iPod touch. The screen is repellent to scratches. For the purpose of backing up this claim, I ran the point of a sharp needle over the screen of the iPod touch a few dozen times, when looking up at it in the light, no scratching or scuffing was apparent - impressive - I'm considering skipping on a case purchase for this iPod.
Touch Interface
The most apparent new feature to the iPod touch is the touch-based user interface. After five minutes of playing with it I was already in astonishment with how well Apple thought out the UI and general feel of browsing the device.
The touch interface is a great new way to browse your music and navigate around your iPod. When you're browsing through your music while holding the device upright, you can scroll through by moving and dragging your finger, when you turn the device sideways, the iPod touch automatically switches the iPod to CoverFlow view in a horizontal format, allowing you to browse through your music by flicking (quite literally) through album covers. This innovative new way to navigate your music library is great fun and yet another way Apple has integrated its new acquisition of the technology to the product line.
I've found browsing through CoverFlow a very quick and pleasing experience, due to the use of the flash based HDD, flicking through music is rather snappy, this is one area of the device I see the flash hard drive to be very useful. A standard spinning drive would choke and burn under this performance stress.
Battery Life
When you want to preserve battery life while listening to music, you can press the sleep button on top of the device, this shuts off screen power and keeps your music playing. When pressing it again, it wakes the screen and prompts you to move a slider to unlock the iPod to prevent accidental input. This is by far one of my favorite UI enhancements - it works seamlessly and is perfectly executed.
Battery life for video playback is slightly under Apple's estimate. The audio playback time is rather impressive, I've been playing music for 5 hours a day for three days now, and the battery still has around 50% remaining. This was one of of my major concerns with the iPod touch before it arrived - the power required to display such a large display.- Wailord, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Wi-Fi
Another large feature headlining is the in-built Wi-Fi in the iPod touch. Wi-Fi is something I've been waiting on for such a lengthy period of time in an iPod, I began to think it would never arrive. Two applications on the iPod built to take advantage of this feature is Safari and YouTube. Safari allows you to browse the web just like in "real form" - just like you're browsing on your desktop machine, while the YouTube application allows you to browse popular videos on the site, or perform a custom search for an exact content match.
Wi-Fi speed is pretty nippy, it's performing a little slower than my Mac Pro desktop in the same position, namely on pages with a bunch of images. The only problem I've had is when I've found myself browsing the web when Safari crashes and takes me back to the home screen. I have noticed a trend of more frequent crashes happening on image heavy web-pages, however it's also happened while entering text in fields on some sites and forums. Because of these crashes, I'd only recommend you use the browser lightly and not load any large scale galleries which could stall the iPod, as crashes will be inevitable at some point.
Disappointingly, the iPod touch Safari browser also lacks support for Java and Flash, meaning unless you're 100% happy with the YouTube browser, you're out of luck to view other video content on the web.
Data Input
The on-screen keyboard is rather impressive at first glance, but becomes a little tedious after using it for a while. It's difficult to develop a suitable typing technique as using your thumbs is difficult due to the small nature of the keys, and using your forefingers makes holding the device awkward to a point. I'm still switching between the two possibilities trying to develop the best technique for me - a little trial and error is in need for this.
Moving to a positive point, the auto correction and auto completion is wonderful. When you're typing a common word the iPod will reveal a possible match underneath the text you're typing, if this is the correct word you're after, it's as simple as tapping the space bar to accept the selection and start on the next word. This is a huge timesaver and makes inroads for general typing difficulty.
Conclusion
I've been very impressed with my iPod touch. Although it lacks in areas such as capacity, Safari reliability, and a difficult on screen keyboard, it makes up for all of this with its smooth user interface which is an absolute joy to play with.
Our advice, if you're drooling over the iPhone, buy the iPod touch now. If you're happy with "just" 16GB of storage and want to upgrade from a previous generation iPod, the iPod touch is perfectly suited - if you need more than 16GB, take a look at the iPod classic (80 & 160GB). - Zippo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Companies have always been advertising disk space in metric, as opposed to binary. This is hardly new, or a controversy.

- AndrewWiggin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The biggest reason I plan to buy the iPhone is that, since the new iPod Touches have come out, I want them. But how could I not pay an extra 25% and get a phone as well? What I don't need is more devices; what I CAN use is an all in one device.
iPod Touch would be great if I didn't want a cell phone, but I do (as everyone does).
I'm sure people have reasons to justify the Touch instead of the iPhone and I'd be interested to hear them (assuming the iPhone is unlocked).- kjk437, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It all depends. I'm happy with my carrier and don't want to mess with the hassle of getting bricked by Apple on an unlock. Also, I'm around a ton of wifi hotspots constantly, so it's not like I need EDGE to get my data. I especially don't want to pay for a cellular data plan each month. So, I stick with my cheap phone which does it's job just fine, and use my touch for on the go wifi, music, video, and podcasts. The iPhone would have just added up too much cost for me.
- 3vno, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22x the stoage space, thinner,I got a great cellphone with great battery life already, cheaper plan too, also i dont want to mod something that i depend so much on. I dont mind two devices, i like it that way. So for me it was a great buy.
O - znicket, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't expect the iPhone to be available in my country until.. late 2008. The iPod Touch will do until then.
- modusop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm pretty sure this is Apple's plan to sell more iPhones.
- AndrewWiggin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Interesting. Everyone's responses had something to do with the iPhone not being fully unlockable.

I don't care if it's twice as thick, I want some goddamn capacity on that beauty!
- znicket, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'm curious about this. What would you do with that capacity?
I can understand having some selection of movies and tv shows... along with some selection of music... but how much do you need really? I'm happy with 4gb of music and 4 in video. That's enough to get me through those situations where I would use the Touch.- JDRay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Agreed. It would be a lot more useful to have more memory if they hadn't disabled the disk feature. With it, having 160 gigs (or whatever) of portable storage that also plays music and video, surfs the web and can keep track of my appointments... oh, wait... well, does other stuff... would be great.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It can be summed up as thus:
Portable, bootable, tiny hard drive. It will also play movies (and I have many I'd like to put on there), music, and photos. Trust me, I could fill it. Favorite movies (encoded at high bitrates for playback on an HDTV), numerous TV shows...it adds up preetty quick.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It can be summed up as thus:
- JDRay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Agreed. It would be a lot more useful to have more memory if they hadn't disabled the disk feature. With it, having 160 gigs (or whatever) of portable storage that also plays music and video, surfs the web and can keep track of my appointments... oh, wait... well, does other stuff... would be great.
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'd much prefer the 80gb drive they have in the current Classic. It's thinner than the 160gb drive. 80gb is more than enough for most people.
- znicket, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'm curious about this. What would you do with that capacity?
- diabulos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4What happens when you are on the town and wish to skip a song? with the scroll wheel it is just one quick, blind click, the same for volume. That means you can have your ipod in a rucksack on your shoulders or back, or hanging from your belt in one of those nice covers. With the touch interface you cannot just reach to the ipod and change, you have to see as there is no tactile response, which means pulling out the ipod and looking at it. Many people around the world listen to music in their commutes, and they don't necessarily want to advertise they have a shinny new gadget to thieves....it becomes useless in that scenario (one very common as attested by a quick scan of all the earpod-wearing people in the trains and metros around the world) and actually, just like expensive mobiles, a dangerous lure.....
- clyde2801, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Went from a 60gb photo to an 80gb 5.5 video. I don't really watch videos on it, to be honest. And I don't really see a compelling reason to go to any of the new iPods, personally. The only reason to buy a touch is to show off, and I really don't want to spend 3 to 4 hundred to do so, thank you very much. If Apple doubled the storage and let me input calendar events on it, then I could possibly see a reason for it.
It's neat, and it's interesting, but it's not compelling enough to make me trade in my 80 gig 5.5. Apple will have to try a little harder to get me to give them more of my money.
And I can't help put think of iPod OS bloat. Despite having the same or faster processors and storage, the new systems are running at the same speed or slower to deliver up eye candy that I don't really want or need. I know I'll get flamed for saying this, but the new iPod OS seems to be the equivalent of Apple Vista Mobile. There. I've said it.- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Can hardly compare the iPod Touch software to Vista. It's elegant, slick, fast and intuitive. Vista is a turd and you'll never see anything like that coming out of Cupertino. Agreed on doubling the memory. 32gb would be the sweet spot. And yes it's a shame they took away several slick apps and left half the home screen naked. Still love to know why Apple deliberately shipped less of a product than they could of done for the same amount of work. Apple should be grateful for selling a device worth several hundred dollars - never you mind whether we get the iPod Touch or iPhone, just make them the best you can and be thankful for a sale. If AT&T are man handling you then kick them in the nuts and do your own thing. You dont need a company like AT&T that is universally hated to boss you around and spoil your own brand.
- clyde2801, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1But there is the 'bloat' element to the new OS. My 5.5 is faster than the new classics or nanos, because it isn't bogged down with cover flow and the like. Comparing it to Vista was a little overboard, but it was to make a point.
- 3adkied, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Since you don't really watch videos on it, I don't know why you'd buy a new iPod, either (and I dugg you up for making that point). Personally, this is the device I've been waiting for. I will by no means retire my 2G nano. It is still my preferred device when walking or riding my bike around town. However, when I'm riding the train or flying on an airplane, I'd like to be able to watch movies or downloaded TV shows. WiFi is nice, but frankly, I've just been waiting for a screen this size to watch video on. One for music, one for (mostly) video appeals to me.

- Zippo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2When the 2nd generation of the iPod Touch comes out and has at least a 32GB hard drive, then I'll consider getting one. But until then I'm happy with my 30GB 5G iPod.
- AndrewWiggin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Funny how people's problem with the touch is that they have an iPod video already. I think Apple is trying to lure more than just the people that have bought the most recent iPod already.
When the next MacBook comes out, I am not going to complain that it is only 15% faster and with double the L2 cache than my current MacBook.- 3adkied, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Agreed. They made it for ME, who has stayed with the nano until a GOOD video device came out.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The new iPods came out right before my birthday. My wife who is usually at a loss for what to get me asked if she could combine our anniversary and my birthday into a single, more expensive gift. Knowing the new iPods were coming, I agreed. We went to a local Apple store and I inspected the goods.
I liked the new nano, but felt the screen was way too small to watch video on. She offered to wait until later in the month when the iPod Touch was due, but after playing with the similar interface on an iPhone, I decided to go with an 80gb iPod Classic instead.
I usually use my iPod in my car, either to and from work or to listen/watch at lunch. The touch interface is slick but not intuitive while driving like the scroll-wheel is. The amount of storage between the two units was significant as well.
The Touch is a pretty slick device and I may get one once storage is up a bit more, but for now the iPod Classic was a better fit for me. - caulktel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0But does it it play streaming audio like Shoutcast or Aba cast?
- macboyardee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Uh, no.
- jerang, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1You could also use http://www.glennwolsey.com/2007/10/02/review-of-ip ... for the review!! I can't wait to get my hands on one. Am gonna wait till X-Mas season hopefully the screens will be completely scratch proof then.
- TjLAXattack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I bought one for my girlfriend - neither of us have an iPhone - and I've been presently surprised with the 16gb iPod touch. I don't own any Apple products besides iPods (and the Nike+ kit), so I don't really have any brand loyalty. But this iPod Touch is pretty awesome and has pretty great battery life, which is very important to me.
- ahirreddy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2What a misleading title, this is no "Detailed" review of the iPod Touch, It's a crap review. The guy's praising apple for everything, and finds a way to justify all of the stupid crap Apple did. No matter what 16gb is 16gb, it's not even 1/4 of what a real video playing device should have. Also it is just a poorly written article: "...the 16GB iPod touch has 14.82GB of space remaining for video, image and audio content. I've heard many claims that Apple is un-fairly advertising its storage capacity, though it's the same with everyone." What crap. Just because everyone does it, doesn't make it right and does not mean that apple should do it. Anyway, I love apple hardware (got a mac mini on the way) but this is just utter crap. Bricking phones, screwing consumers, among other things really shows apples true colors.
- 68024, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Definitely going to wait until they release an iPod touch with more memory. That's the only thing stopping me upgrading now from my 60Gb iPod of which 18.8 Gb is filled now...
- infiniteduck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0I happen to own one... here's a review for you.
Pros
- Videos are of good quality.
- A nice device for portable internet while in a WIFI area. With WIFI the posibilities are endless to what can be added.
- The interface is really nice and very shiney. Touch works very well.
- I have yet to run below 60% of battery, so the life seems awesome for the moment.
Cons
- For sites with close links, it can be difficult to click the right link, even while zoomed.
- Images with small text can be hard to read even zoomed. Sometimes it gets fuzzy. =(
- To unlock your iPod touch slide your finger across the screen. When syncing to cancel, slide your finger across the screen. (I canceled my sync twice thinking I needed to 'unlock it' before the sync could go through.... go me)
- There are apps available however they aren't 'okayed' by apple and I'm weary to use any of them.
- 'Typing' was difficult at first until I got used to it.
- You get 14gb in acutal storage which is still awesome to me.
- You can't use your fingernail or a stylus so it's not really friendly for someone with chubbier fingers. I'm lucky, I got tiny fingers.
To make the iPod Touch awesome... please add a few simple games, and iMail. Very happy with my purchase. All in all.. worth buying if you don't want to get an iPhone. Treat nicely it or you might scratch it. - thedreaming1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I noticed the never mentioned anything about the video playback quality. Alot of people are complaining that the screen is nothing like the iphones' and that at times, the image is actually looking more like a negative.
- Kicksilver, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Man, I'm so happy with my 5th gen 2gb Nano. I don't think I'd make use of more than 30% of those 16gb.
- LeeSoong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Does it support Video Out Via HDMI / S-Video / Component Video ?
- tjkisst, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1Everyone seems to be wanting this ipod now. This site may help if you're strapped for cash: http://freeipodtouch.blogspot.com/
