- michaelpinto, on 11/07/2009, -5/+215If the prices of iPhones are dropping then Droid is already a good thing!
- adml_shake, on 11/08/2009, -4/+181They don't seem to understand that the biggest selling feature of the phone is that it's NOT ON AT&T.
- CrispixKingdom, on 11/08/2009, -47/+168In short, Apple decides to stop gouging its customers due to the emergence of a viable competitor.
- thefox84, on 11/08/2009, -7/+82Oh yeah a $100 iPhone is just TERRIFYING. The real horror is the sum of those wireless bills in two years with either the Droid or iPhone. Which are about $2,000. They should be practically giving away the phones with how much they screw you in the bills.
- ghouze, on 11/08/2009, -3/+70It's still on AT&T -- wait, I lost you -- I said it's still on AT&T...
Damn, no bars... - hangglide, on 11/08/2009, -1/+67Why does the price of the phone even matter that much? It is the monthly fee with a two year contract where the real cost lies. The upfront difference is pittance when you consider that the two year cost is well into two grand.
- Yage2006, on 11/08/2009, -13/+62That would be more relevant if it the iphone was not exclusive to at&t or rogers or whoever depending on your country.
I think many of those who have not yet bought an iphone have not because either 1. They dont like a touchscreen only device and I know many people who don't or 2. Don't watch to switch providers especially to one that SUCKS like at&t.
I think the droid will do nicely.
And personally I would rather see them succeed then apple. - oyster, on 11/08/2009, -10/+57Apple is gouging its customers with a smartphone that costs $199?
How do you figure? I'm pretty sure that's what the Droid costs. Is that gouging too? - lukas88, on 11/08/2009, -12/+47iPhone hardware is slick, but no phone or price is worth dealing with AT&T and the tyrannical apple OS.
I have been using android for several months now and you couldn't pay me enough to switch to any other smartphone OS. - philomatic, on 11/08/2009, -6/+35Err have you compared the iPhone price with other smart phones, or even that of the Droid....
iPhone 16GB - $199
Droid 16 GB - $199
Palm Pre 8GB - $149
MyTouch 4GB - $149
Oh yea, definitely gouging...
/s - reptarman, on 11/08/2009, -2/+25Ah, I love capitalism. Market competition at its best!
- SPECOPS, on 11/08/2009, -4/+26OMFG I'm paying over $2800 for Directv over a two year period! OMFG while I have the calculator out, I'm paying over $24,000 for my car over a 60 month period! *****! OMG! DAMN!
/s - evil-doer, on 11/08/2009, -8/+30ill love the price dropped iphones because ill be able to get an android phone cheaper.
- bstew22, on 11/08/2009, -1/+21can i get that saleswoman's name and number?
- Pic0, on 11/08/2009, -0/+19AT&T doesnt work that way...
Recently on halloween I was around a bunch of people and I could only get 1/15 calls out yet I had full bars.
The bars are false hope.
I just saw a commercial for droid with stealth bombers ... awesome - Slackdragon, on 11/08/2009, -5/+23Or, 3. They don't want an iPhone.
I know it's a radical idea to Apple zealots, but not everyone is slathered with envy of the iPhone. - cowguin, on 11/08/2009, -5/+22I can't even get a droid, they are sold out within hours of shipments.
- birch25, on 11/08/2009, -3/+20I don't get this either. The Pre is $149 (w/ rebate), the Droid is $199 (w/ rebate), the iPhone is $199, and most other smart phones are in that range (hell, even a middle-of-the-road smart phone like the CLIQ costs $199 with a rebate).
- r3ap3r, on 11/08/2009, -1/+18Well that was an exciting two sentence article backed with tons of evidence.
- Wonderama, on 11/08/2009, -2/+15Android is like that co-worker you thought you could work with if necessary, but then found you really, really like.
- DaviDTC, on 11/08/2009, -1/+13Most people don't look at the total price of everything, just what they have to pay now.
- Pic0, on 11/08/2009, -3/+14I can't wait for my contract to end in May. AT&T can kiss my ass unless they offer an Android phone.
- themastersb, on 11/08/2009, -2/+12I doubt I'll see a $99 iPhone. Maybe an iPhone with a plan which will make it cost $999 in the end.
- colincornaby, on 11/08/2009, -0/+9Technically they're upgrading the current $99 3G to a 3GS. So I wouldn't say it's either a price drop or making a crappier model.
- valkyries, on 11/08/2009, -1/+10competition > price drops, to compete
- zephc, on 11/08/2009, -2/+11That's right! We can't have marketplace competition!!!@
idiot - funkdoctor77, on 11/08/2009, -2/+11Seriously. The iphone is not a new product by any means. There have been various ways to get one for $99 for the past few years (refurbs. etc). I had an iphone until 7am yesterday. I left for 2 reasons
a) AT&T
b) I just got bored of the iPhone.
Now I love Apple, all my computers are Mac's but AT&T service is horrible. The guy to the left of me at the Verizon counter also had an iphone and was leaving AT&T like me. The saleswoman looked like she was about to reach orgasm when she saw two people leaving the iphone. A little creepy, but I like my droid so far. Really nice phone. - BloodyMess, on 11/08/2009, -5/+13So it's $100 off the contract-life cost of, what, $2200? Anyone who buys an iPhone when it's $99+2 years of $80/mo charges, instead of $199+2 years of $80/mo charges, is going to pay $2100 instead of $2200. Exactly a 4.5% discount. Whoopee.
- Solkre, on 11/08/2009, -10/+18iPhone could have been free, I'd still have gotten the Droid and stayed with Verizon.
Loving my Droid! - dpknc84, on 11/08/2009, -0/+7Agreed. While yeah the iPhone is cool and all, a lot of people merely need a regular flip/whatever phone to just make calls.
- EtherGnat, on 11/08/2009, -0/+7Yes, oh no. Whatever will I do with my crappy clone that has 2.5x the resolution on a larger screen, better service, better GPS, true multitasking, removable battery, and I don't have to hack to install whatever apps I want. Poor, poor me.
- kpmoore, on 11/08/2009, -4/+10Just got mine today :)
- DavidinBoston, on 11/08/2009, -2/+8$99 iPhone Launch Might Be Spoiled by Verizon's Superior Coverage.
- Brak710101, on 11/08/2009, -1/+7Undercutting is not signs of an anti-trust.
If you want to be retarded and sell a product for $1 that everyone has the charge $400 for, you're more than welcome to. - colincornaby, on 11/08/2009, -1/+7"Competition doesn't include such obvious undercutting."
Seriously?
Actually, no, this is great. Let's require Dell to sell for the same prices as Apple. You know, no undercutting and all. - berobreo, on 11/08/2009, -1/+7Buried for just pure envy :)
- Orbital101, on 11/08/2009, -2/+8I hear the Droid is awesome but... "Nothing beats an actual physical keyboard no matter how ***** it is."? I'm not so sure about that part. :)
- jv2k, on 11/08/2009, -0/+6I don't know why you got dug down because that is a perfect analogy.
No single android deveice(or other smart phone in general in US) is going to dethrone the iphone. It made the smart phone more than just a business tool. With more android devices being released on different networks people are probably going to buy it as a "bargain brand" or "imitation" iphone and find that what they have is pretty damn good. - phyx726, on 11/08/2009, -8/+13Postng this on my droid. Nothing beats an actual physical keyboard no matter how ***** it is.
- takamalak, on 11/08/2009, -0/+5Or 4. Their Jitterbug has the BIG BUTTONS.
- kefkaantakrist, on 11/08/2009, -0/+5... they *are* practically giving it away. The 16GB iPhone build cost is ~$179 (just in parts, never mind shipping, support services, turtlenecks, profit, etc.) and they sell it for $199.
- SPECOPS, on 11/08/2009, -0/+5actually it goes to 5 bars, drops the call, then to 1 bar, then back to 5 bars, still stealth no signal, then to 1 bar then you can make a call clear as can be. Weird.
- oyster, on 11/08/2009, -9/+14Yeah, CrispixKingdom interrupted his bowl of cereal to bring us a staggering piece of stupidity.
- EtherGnat, on 11/08/2009, -0/+5@kefkaantakrist
Sure it's fair to look at the cost of the data and voice plan, it's all part of the total cost of ownership. One doesn't do you much good without the other.
If you compare the cost of a $100 phone to a $200 phone it might seem like there needs to be a big difference to justify the extra. If you compare the cost of a $2000 package to a $2100 it puts it in perspective. - rolf, on 11/08/2009, -1/+6All of you are ignoring the subsidizing both iPhone and Android have. Those prices listed wouldn't be gouging because an iPod Touch and Zune both cost more and have less features.
But the phone companies all get you on the monthly charges. - proverbs17, on 11/08/2009, -1/+6Why are people digging this down? It doesn't matter what device you like, competition helps us all!! So what if he's one of those commie apple lovers :) (just kidding, I have a Mac at work!)
- jv2k, on 11/08/2009, -2/+6You should travel more.
- Cyberdactyl, on 11/08/2009, -1/+5Why do people KEEP bring up the price point for these phones that vary by $50-100?!
It's almost like most people are easily played by these companies to mask the data plans.
I chose the Palm Pre' because the phone was small and compact, does virtually everything the other phones do, with the exception of video recording, BUT the data and call plan undercuts all the other phones by at least $20/month (usually by $30) for the same services. - boogerthecat, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4AH... you read the fine print on the microdot on the bottom of the box.
- MWeather, on 11/08/2009, -1/+5@kefkaantakrist
$100 is $100, but $100 over 2 years is $4.17 a month.
If saving $4.17 a month is a major factor in your purchase, perhaps you're spending way more money than you should be. -
