- ophello, on 08/08/2008, -5/+36All of you stfu and keep this on the DL! If apple finds out we can make a free ringtone from any song...
- supermanred, on 08/07/2008, -6/+29Christ, it's so easy with Garageband. I didn't know there was a "Share as ringtone" feature in it... easy as pie.
Now I have a very much Borat ringtones... great success! - Tikisam, on 08/08/2008, -0/+21You must be the most hated person in the room when your phone goes off.
Not out of envy, but annoyance. - Disillusion, on 08/08/2008, -1/+14Audacity works just fine for me.
- awtripp, on 08/08/2008, -3/+15Seriously, Audacity rocks.
- g00dbye, on 08/08/2008, -1/+13Dugg for WTF.
- ORBAT, on 08/08/2008, -1/+11You do realize it's Apple who implemented the feature in Garage Band?
- lougoose, on 08/08/2008, -0/+8Apple originally wanted to let people make free ringtones. They were going to let the iTunes ringtone feature apply to any song. However, the RIAA caught wind of that and put a stop to it.
I forget where that article is, but I do remember it was on Digg frontpage (probably cause it bashes the RIAA :-] ) - campo, on 08/08/2008, -0/+7i know GB from iLife '08 works, sorry that's not very helpful...
- itbescott, on 08/08/2008, -3/+9Tila Tequila ringtones here we come... dear God what have we done!?!
- louiebaur, on 08/08/2008, -2/+7Ah this is great more jingles!

- D3koy, on 08/08/2008, -2/+6Know what is even better and less annoying? leaving your phone on vibrate...
- clemsontiger, on 08/08/2008, -3/+6I have been using Audacity for years to make mine. Not a big fan of the organization of itunes.
- VoodooPunk, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3I starting to care about opto's blog just to spite you BigDane.
- ramsinks.com, on 08/08/2008, -1/+4wow, the only thing I gathered from this was: http://audiko.net/
way cool!!
thanks~ - ngmcs8203, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3Or if you don't have the latest Katy Perry hit or that one Beatles song that really reminds you of your dad... just use this ringtone sharing site:
http://audiko.net/ - namelessXsilent, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3ive been making my ringtones like this for a long time now. Its not new to 2.0
- optophobia, on 08/08/2008, -1/+4I wasn't insinuating they were, I was merely stating this is not NEW
- 1shawn, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2Ditto. You beat me to it! Man-bags are just funny.
- SLYK, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2Great plan, except for the fact that it's on a popular website, now.
- bball2, on 08/09/2008, -0/+2I dunno about everyone else, but I just hate it when people link to crap on digg which then links to the actual article:
http://theappleblog.com/2008/08/07/free-custom-iph ...
Especially ars technica and life hacker =/ - campo, on 08/08/2008, -1/+3this is just way easier to do with garageband
- wedges, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2also you're using windows mobile...
- leerayIG88, on 08/08/2008, -5/+7I have a ring tone of splashing mayo.
- LifeINpictures, on 08/08/2008, -1/+3Hey man , so Garage Band allows you to make your own ringtones? What version of GB do you need?
- campo, on 08/08/2008, -2/+4has a keyboard is not a plus for me, i couldn't care less...
- zizzo, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2I have the old GB and it works fine. Just go to the "Share" tab in the menu bar and click on "Send Ringtone to iTunes." Do this after you have added a song to your track. It will then say something about the song being too long and ask if you want to adjust it. Then a slim yellow/orange bar will appear above the track and you can slide it to the portion of the song you want as your ringtone. You can also shorten/or extend the little bar to make your clip longer/shorter. Then go to the "Share" menu again and it should send no problem (as long as it's still not too long).
- Whitey07, on 08/09/2008, -0/+2I've just been using bluetooth and sending mp3's.. lol. Suppose I'll use this now.
- Galaxylander, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2Garageband comes free on every Mac. I fail to see your point unless someone is running iLife '04 or something..
- c010rb1indusa, on 08/08/2008, -2/+4You'd have to edit them anyways, I don't want a whole song for my ringtone n garageband does just that so its really just as easy. Plus windows mobile sucks.
- tenmenkilled, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2Thanks for the link, that site rocks.
- adairnic, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2The only thing Apple makes you pay for as far as ringtones go are Protected AAC files that you buy from their music store. Other than that, its been pretty well known for about a year now that you can make a ringtone by appending the .m4r extension, and then Garageband '08 has been able to do it for about 6 months. Not really news now...
- n3tfury, on 08/09/2008, -0/+1very nice for my friends that are too non-technical to understand audacity
- StokieBread, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1This site also has a walk through.

nothing new. i made a tutorial myself on how to make a ringtone for the iphone.
you just need some software to edit the music file down to 20 seconds. - suckanucka, on 08/08/2008, -8/+9***** ringtones. Leave your phone on vibrate.
- byrdgang, on 08/08/2008, -1/+2While many of the ringtones on myxer are free, you have to send some number a text message; after doing this, you get a text message telling you to click on a link. This requires that you access the Internet, and unless you have unlimited internet access on your phone, you're charged for it.
So, it's not absolutely free. - BigDane, on 08/08/2008, -4/+5no one cares about your blog..
- BarriedaleNick, on 08/09/2008, -0/+1Oh wow - thats unpossible on every other phone!
- byrdgang, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1...except that you have to sign up in order to use the website. You upload, crop, and download the song you want with Audiko.net without having to sign up.
- manitoba98xp, on 08/08/2008, -2/+3Well, it's said in the description that it's for iPhone, and besides, using iTunes strongly suggests that it's intended for the iPhone.
It's great that it's easy on other providers, but not terribly relevant here. Besides, many providers lock down the phones (to sell you ringtones through their services), so your mileage may vary. - Galaxylander, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Because taste in music isn't subjective or anything.
- adairnic, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1You are probably right VoodooPunk, I didn't actually test as I am not on a computer that has iTunes installed. I just figured it would work as the iPhone can play AAC or mp3...
- byrdgang, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Thank you for making my life a lot easier!
- adairnic, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1.mp3 works too.
- wordfan, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1So I gather from the comments here that all you really have to do to make a ringtone is take an AAC file of the right length and change the extension? Does it have to be an AAC file or coult it be an mp3?
- VoodooPunk, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1It has to be an AAC file but itunes will convert an mp3 to an AAC file for you. Just add the mp3 to itunes, right click it and select convert to AAC. Then change the extension and add the new file to itunes again and it will show up in the ringtones section.
*I'll have to try just changing an mp3's file extension if adairnic says it works. I don't remember that working correctly but maybe I'm wrong. -
