which is exactly why everyone is using linux running on an amd and using word perfect to type their comments. a good slogan and a soon-to-be-washed-up teen star using your product will get the sales every time over a good product with no marketing. - FishyTech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12If you know what you're looking for in Apple Technology, this won't catch you off guard. But for the dad who has a birthday party in 20 minutes, buying one of these from a street vendor in Manhattan would be a huge mistake!
- SP33DFR34K, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13The iPod Shuffle counterfeit looks really well made (well the backside), especially to those who really do not pay really close attention to the real iPod shuffle. The nano on the other hand, is a bit iffy. The screen just looks weird, but I'm still sure it will be able to catch most people off guard. Looks pretty real (excluding the interference).
Remember, common sense applies: If something is too good to be true, it probably is. Just strictly avoid buying things from not so reputable dealers and stick to the more reputable dealers. - spin-docta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Note: Apple will never say these words on an iPod box "Digital Music Player"
- saisumimen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8*if you have a good product you shouldn't have to spend millions on advertising."
*cringe*
Do you have ANY idea how many legitimately GOOD products over the years have simply died (or lost to inferior competitors) due to bad, non-existant, low-budget, or poorly thought-out advertising?????
You've gotta be kidding me. Please tell me you're trolling; you can't be that ignorant. - DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I don't understand that...they copy the player and the color of the box, but not the text. Makes no sense to me.
- cathode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Sounds great, DRM-free I wonder?
But I don't want it if it doesn't say "Please Don't Steal Music" or whatever on the packaging. I like to be preached at from a huge corporation. - jj00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Do any of these things work? If it plays mp3, ogg, wma, divx, etc and I can copy to and from the device as if it's a hard drive, do I really care if it looks like an iPod?
- Justus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8...I didn't hear him whining about anything.
- MaLaCoiD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Where can I get one?
- sirber, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Found one!

- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9You really think the price difference between a counterfeit Shuffle and a real one is worth having a fake one? It's not like either the nano or the shuffle are enough of a bank-breaker to consider a vastly-inferior-looking and cheaply-made one. Plus, people who knowingly support counterfeiters are douchebags.
- Pottersquash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7if the fake Nano works as decently, I want one!
- xero9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8You bitter because this one made it to the front page and yours didn't?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7why? cause someone can make a really cheap looking knock off? just look at the fit and finish on those conterfit ipods, apple is definately putting more time and effort into making sure everything fits together right..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10"Don't let anyone fool you, Apple hardware is just about as "cheap," it's mass-produced crap itself."
Not sure about that. If apple hardware is such "mass-produced crap", then why weren't those sneaky Chinese counterfeiters able to reproduce it perfectly? Why couldn't they get the screen right? or why weren't they able to construct the thing without using large, visible metal screws on the sides? Why couldn't they reproduce the slick look and feel of the original, instead of having it look bland and cheap?
With these counterfeits, you have NO idea what you're getting. Notice the sticker that says "1GB"... what's to stop them from adding one of these tiny "1GB" stickers to their 256MB model? No warranty. No support. No guarantee that it'll even work out of the box (or that one is even inside the box). Plus, if the thing stops working 1 month after you buy it, then what? You buy another one? This guy said his laptop didn't recognize it. What if your counterfeit isn't properly soldered/grounded/wired/whatever and it zaps your USB hub, ***** up your motherboard in the process?
To call the legit ipods just as cheap mass produced crap as the chinese counterfeits is ignorant. - oddball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6check out all these great features and awesome mastery of the English language!

nah, it only plays two formats: audio (mp3) and video (mp4). plus, what do you do if it breaks a day after you buy it??
i bought a nano only after i heard you can run linux on it. i can play mame games on it and watch videos now. also, you can drag and drop files "like a hard drive".. i use it to transfer school assignments to my school's computers. where did you hear that it wasn't possible? - PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Someone whining about $129 versus $199 that has the most expensive cell phone service known to man (EVDO)?"
Whining ? Eh... I went and bought the $199 actual Nano. However at the time I bought (many many months ago) I did not know about this "knock off" which I must say is funny, as it has more features than the actual Nano (even when doing a Linux install on the Nano it doesn't compare)
EVDO with my Sprint phone is just $5 more than I usually pay a month (and is soooo nice). - ross., on 10/12/2007, -3/+7"to be fair, they have to recoup their r&d costs, advertising, etc. as well."
yeah those product placements don't come cheap you know - shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8yah... enjoy it too. bet it works like a charm.
not. - booberry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5At this point if Apple had to promote that an Ipod was a "digital music player"...they might as well just gimme all their stock, move to the middle of no where, and watch grass grow. The knock offs are not the best attempt, but hey, it's better than I could do.
- kaniz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You know, the interface on the fake nano actually looks kinda spiffy :P
- rthille, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4iTunes/AAC/DRM is _NOT_ mandatory on an iPod. I run non-DRM AACs, and MP3s on my 40GB 4thGen iPod, and shuffle. I rip all my own CDs and vinyl and they all play just fine. I also get the occasional free-music-tuesday song off the iTunes Music Store, which does come with DRM, but it's easily stripped by using an old account and jHymm, or just burning it to a CD and re-ripping. Also, I use iTunes to manage my music and load my iPod, but it's not required. There are 3rd party apps to load an iPod.
- saisumimen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7*You're* a dupe.
- drsnacks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Is this of any relevance to any law-abiding US citizen? They wouldn't sell these in stores - the only place you'd find these is in big city street vendor stands. Everybody knows what they're getting into when they buy branded merchandise from street vendors.
Oh wait. Ebay. The bootlegger's Amazon. - kaniz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, that one doesnt say its an iPod, it says its /like/ one, and can use its cases, but it doesnt come out and say that it is an iPod.
- panic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it actually looks like these counterfeits have had a lot of work put into them. is that UI actually created specifically for this counterfeit one or is it some sort of open source mp3 player stuff? are the guts of the fake iPods manufactured specifically for this or do you think they're taken from some other mp3 player? where are these fakes being distributed? so many questions....
- PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A gig is fine for a screen that small. You could probably squeeze 3 divx movies if you encode it to be played just on that screen.
- redrighthand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They are selling them at Fry's electronics in Phoenix but they dont say ipod on these models anywhere they just look very very similar.
Fake Nano-
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dklimke/128066267/ - ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4that's a good one... how the volume button is supposed to work?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I love my Nano just fine though, if I want videos, I can stream that to my cell phone"
Got ipod linux on mine, plays videos just fine :) (albeit a little small, and without codecs yet) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"if you have a good product you shouldn't have to spend millions on advertising."
do you remember when the ipod came out? it was back in 2001. the magazine reviewers who were sent advance copies all loved it, especially the click wheel thing. but the general public didn't really get wind of this product until much later. in 2004 it finally blew up due in part to the advertising; people love the product and companies have scrambled to create imitations (legal and illegal) because it is was just a revolutionary product.
most of the PMPs ever since have been modeled around it; most have tried to copy their click wheel interface as well. the advertising wasn't there at first, so nobody (besides internet geeks) knew about it.... but are you honestly telling me this isn't a "good" product? - longman2g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3maybe, maybe not, it sounds like they work alright
- SniperSlap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is too funny. I used to work at a store that tried to buy into all this cheap no-name Chinese crap. So many dumb knockoff businesses. People get genuinley ripped off by this crap.
Although if you're an iPod loser, you deserve it. - theArtfulDodger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hehe; nah darrel,
Apple 1 - Fakes Null
Agreed. A mp3 player is a mp3 player, but some mp3 players are created more equal than others. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"and the last photo is just a semi naked woman!"
you didn't notice they photoshopped a nano into her hand?
This was bound to happen. you think the chinese were just going to sit around and not try to make any money off suckers and people who want the real to look like they have the real thing but dont have the money to pay for it?
the only thing that surprised me was how long it took for these things to come out. i mean ipods have been around since 2001. it took them 5 years to come out with counterfeits. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"auto-update in iTunes"
well there's your problem. i have mine turned off. let me rephrase that; i have ALL of my software (xp, firefox, itunes, za, etc, etc.) with auto-update OFF due to stuff like this.
i agree, itunes sucks big time so i had the winamp plugin too, but it would ssssssslllllllloooooowwwwww down my computer for no reason, and would cause conflicts with itunes so i had to ditch it. BUT there is hope; there's an open source project (can't remember the name) that is being worked on now so lets keep our fingers crossed.
anyway, from the counterfeits i've seen (not just the nano), they all just play mp3s and mp4s. no divx, no ogg. - Darrelc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4those buying this junk deserves everything they get;
-crap battery life
-crap sound quality
Are you on about the Ipods or the fakes?
In the end an mp3 player is an mp3 player. Id rather take one that has more features and is cheaper even if people think it doesnt look as good as an Ipod (Personally, I don't care, 95% of the time my mp3 player is in my pocket anyway)
I don't think they should be branding it as an Ipod though, Sure make a knockoff but dont try and make it like an actual product (*Fond memories of a PopStation, I baught one the other day :D*)
-Darrel.
And on an unrelated note, Does it piss anyone off when people call mp3 players "MP3's" as in, "I got a new mp3 the other day". It annoys me. - yuga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We've seen the same iPod Nanos here in Manila since February:
http://www.pinoytechblog.com/archives/fake-ipod-nanos-hit-manila
Them fakes sell for about $75 each. - Bachus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Darrelc: True, but the iPod also has a feature that saves your position in the file in addition to being able to skip from chapter to chapter. With newer versions of iTunes (at least as old as iTunes 6, perhaps even older versions) you can actually make any audio file "bookmarkable" so it functions in this manner, although I think only 4G ipods and up support these "custom" bookmarability settings.
Besides, I got my Shuffle "free" when I signed up for Audible (I paid shipping and was locked in to a 6 month subscription). $12.95 for a 512MB Shuffle seemed like a pretty good deal to me. :) - northerncomfort, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What a monstrosity. The interface looks like... god, I don't even know. What's up with the topsy-turvy click wheel?
You'd have to have really just fallen off the back of the turnip truck to fall for this thing. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I bought a Zaurus to do that, does a damn better job. "
To do what? transfer files to and from computer? Sigh.... that's not AT ALL the reason why I bought one. I already have a USB thumb drive that does a much better job than ANY mp3 player. I was just pointing out the fact that it is possible to do so, since I often forget my thumb drive but usually am always listening to my mp3s.
"Methinks you were caught up in the fad "
Ehh... don't know about that. I did plenty of research before I bought one. The MAIN reason why I even wanted an mp3 player in the first place was to listen to at the gym; I hate the techno and dance ***** they play there, and I wanted one to listen to at school.
So size was probably the most important factor, next was the interface. I held off on the regular ipods because I thought they were too much of a fad and were way too big to hang around my neck under my shirt at the gym. it came down to three players. Two of them were way cheaper than the nano (Samsung YP series), but their interface was crap (couldn't scroll quickly enough and no random feature). Since I have it filled up with songs, I didn't want to sit there and keep searching for the song I wanted to play or play it in the same order every time. So I went with the nano, best choice for me, not because of "hype".
"now who said earlier in this thread a good product sells itself. I offer proof here that marketting [sic] is the real reason the Ipod is popular."
I have to agree that marketing played a big role in its success, but let me ask you this: if marketing was the ONLY reason why everybody loves it, then why are all the major manufacturers (both legal and the illegal Chinese counterfeits) trying to duplicate its simple interface and click wheel? They were extremely innovative features that everyone loves and were able to snatch the portable player market away from Sony as a result. - MrCobaltBlue, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Don't forget Apple's request "Please do not steal music" stuck to every iPod before purchase.
Also they look like crap.. at least make them look similar. Although granted if you were under the influence of something then you might mistake it, or mentally handicapped. - Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want one of these:
http://www.z-cyber.net/Products/ZlingKarla.htm - benwaterworth, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8anyone who buys one of those fake nano's deserves it.
look at it...the buttons on the click wheel don't line up, what does a vol. button actually do?
it doesn't even look like it works. - saisumimen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The click wheel didn't come about until later."
sigh... whatever, the scroll wheel or whatever it was called; the point was about the interface and how you scrolled through the menus and songs. it still stands that it was an innovative idea that the manufacturers have been trying to copy since. - demonicume, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2where can i get one? i just want an MP3 player.
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3When hasn't that been popular?
