- LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33Although I think this is a great idea for an application, I don't think a huge number of people will actually use this app in the kitchen. How many of you guys really bring your notebook into the kitchen and use it while cooking? My personal opinion is this is a niche application that will appeal to a relatively small community.
But great idea and excellent presentation. - digga, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19It's a Mac App competition!
- neom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I can't help but think the author of this digg post may have a vested interest in said application.....
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Didn't this happen last time? One of the apps hits digg, then skyrockets?
- myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Why looky, the apple category! If you don't care about the apple category, then turn it off in your preferences!
- abohling, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I actually do use my laptop in the kitchen because I get a lot of recipes online and I prefer that to printing them out. But I also am extremely careful to keep the laptop out of danger at the same time.
This could be very useful but some of this software does exist and there are online options also. Looks good though otherwise. - donnikhan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I would use it. I don't cook at all, but if I had a program that would let me plan my meals for the week, tell me what raw materials I needed and how to prepare the meals, I would spend some decent coin on it. I mean, there are so many possiblities with this program, (especially for weight loss...). However, it says I can download it right now...where???
- DarthPilatus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I use my iBook all the time in the kitchen. The kitchen is the hub of my house and most time is spent in or around it.
I use it for a timer widget, to look up recipes, do shopping lists, scale up quantities (I cook for anything up to 15 relatives on weekends), convert weights to metric, watch Ctrl-Alt-Chicken while trying the recipes, get cocktail mixtures, watch my cooking dvds, listen to cooking podcasts and sometimes listen to music (anyone who has cooked risotto knows how long it takes). Two weeks ago I did a iChat video conference with my friend in her kitchen (I'm in Australia, she's in LA) and helped her cook a meal for her new boyfriend.
My mum was so impressed with it that she had me install an old mac mini with a screen in the kitchen and she uses it every day.
Niche application yes, but still a great idea... - dicerandom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Sorry, but Atmosphere is orders of magnitude more sleek and awesome than Cookbook.
I'm voting Atmosphere, Blossom, and Cookbook for top 3 though. - random44, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8There's Full Screen mode, speech and remote control use, so you don't have to get it very close to your food. Not to mention my primary use will be scheduling / shopping lists, especially for parties. You can always print recipes out if you need them, too.
- ascheinberg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9This is really lame. This is a contest, and this is blatant advertising that will skew the results. I'm sorry, but I'm forced to report this as spam in the name of fairness. No offense, but I encourage others to do the same.
- pilot3033, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5WTF are you talking about? Let me remind you what gerrymandering is:
ger·ry·man·der (jr-mndr, gr-) Pronunciation Key Audio pronunciation of "gerrymandering" [P]
tr.v. ger·ry·man·dered, ger·ry·man·der·ing, ger·ry·man·ders
To divide (a geographic area) into voting districts so as to give unfair advantage to one party in elections.
n.
1. The act, process, or an instance of gerrymandering.
2. A district or configuration of districts differing widely in size or population because of gerrymandering. - eyestosky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@palmer
There is no application yet. That is the idea of the contest. People came up with concepts and mockups and whichever app concept wins gets to have their application made by a team of programmers.
From the My Dream App site:
"The event where 24 finalists compete for a chance to have their dream app made into reality." - dicerandom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@wphj:
So are gradients and image maps on title bars, desktop background images, and scalable vector graphic icons. You could use your UI just as well with simple solid colors and 8bit color bitmaped icons and it would free up your oh-so-precious resources.
The point of Atmosphere, IMO, is eye candy. It's a dynamic and cool looking desktop background which just happens to also be able to indicate what the weather might be like in some part of the world. - roontoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you are a real cook this concept rocks. If you don't cook you won't get it and that is OK. I personally would rather pay for this than an app that will tell me what is going on with the weather which is outside of my window.
- origclubsoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My problem with this app is that its doesnt seem as useful as some of the other apps at MyDreamApp
- maclaxguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I'm not going to vote for something I can't even use."
OK, so don't.
"Why no Windows version? Or is this part of that 'we're too cool to be practical' movement goings on? 90% of the world won't be able to use this."
Please. Do you hold that same attitude to all programs that are Windows only? So because Macs account for 10% of all computers means they should not be allowed to have programs written for them....? If you're going to pull the "Mac users are a bunch of elitists" stunt, try not to do it yourself. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's one of those programs that I say I will use, then I buy it and don't use it. Atmosphere on the other hand would stay on my desktop if it lived up to the promise.
- r3neGaDe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yea, it was Atmosphere. According to the guy behind it, the digg article pulled it back into contention.
Side note - although cool looking, and a good idea, I personally wouldn't use this, and I'm not sure how many other people would use it either. I'd much rather have a cheap piece of paper with the recipe printed on it near me in the kitchen than my laptop. - sonofalink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5While I agree that Whistler is DEFINITELY the best app out of the lot, to say it doesn't exist elsewhere is ... well ... wrong.
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I would use it in the kitchen. Otherwise I have to remember to print it off at work.
And voice/remote support, amazing! - kiranlightpaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Because I have no window in my cubicle, I think Atmosphere has the best chance of making my work experience just a little bit more enjoyable and less painful. It gets my vote.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Atmosphere doesn't just show what is out my window-it shows what is outside the window at my cabin in Tahoe, too.
- jibber11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If it will make my wife like my Mac sooo much i have to buy another one, i am all for it! 24" imac can smell it already, along with her cooking!
- rogersmj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5What, like Atmosphere? Yeah, that's REAL useful.
Cookbook has been my favorite all along because I cook, I hate printing recipes, it has a wonderful UI, and the whole app is well thought-out. I also like the Hijack app.
I think this Digg post would have made more sense if it would have linked to the MyDreamApp page about Cookbook and its designer ( http://mydreamapp.com/contestants/view/michaelyuan ), rather than Cookbook's prototype web site that makes it look like it's actually available. Some people seem to be confused. - maakusuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ok, it is not alright that one of the My Dream App contestants is going to get an artificial boost in votes simply because the digg effect is so incredibly efficient at evoking interest. Remember what happened last time, with Atmosphere? Now I'm not trying to slander the Cookbook entry here, far from it -- I just don't want to see another unfair advantage given to one contestant because his or her app was placed on digg.com. This should be especially true for the final round of voting.
I buried this topic, and so should you. Not out of hate for Cookbook, or My Dream App, or anything like that. Quite the opposite, in fact. Everyone should bury this post because it undermines the fairness of the MDA voting system. If you want to be drawing attention to the contest, post a topic about how MDA voting is now in the finals; it will draw just as many people, but without the subtle bias advocating one contestant in the tag gives way to. We've seen this kind of voting irregularity happen before, people; let's not do it again. - johnred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Take your meds Neil.
- origclubsoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Are you two retarded? I said not as useful as __some__ off the other apps.
- 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2pilot3033,
I think you just destroyed Chairboy's dream of being the next top trial lawyer. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I actually have a 17" Intel iMac, that my family won from a drawing at an Apple Store opening, right in my kitchen.
- hernam19, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think this is a great idea for those who would rather cook than eat out every night. This would also be a great app. for those who want to keep a meal log/planner and for those who are on strict diets.
- 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3/wrong spot.... burry me
- 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree that it would be an app to buy for me if it pulled recipes from FoodTV. Problems I have with it, is that (on that page at least) it doesn't disclose who or where recipes come from.
So, yeah. If it pulled from Alton Brown or Rachel Ray... I'd nab it. - rayde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i hope this gets made, but it sounds like the judges (aside from our very own Kevin Rose) are all bashing it.. :-(
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2See, this is actually a case where it'd be better to be a "web 2.0" site.

I just looks like iTunes learned to cook, that's all. Maybe if it had a play button and it did it for you. - jamesong, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5This app is really lame. I have yet to vote for in in the contest.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is essentially the same as MacGourmet, plus a couple features.
- MightySlam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Sorry... a cookbook app seems kinda lame. Especially for those of us who don't own laptops. When I need a recipe off my iMac, my printer works just fine.
I have to say, I was less than impressed with the final contestants... but I *LOVE* Atmosphere. I know it's pretty much useless, but it sure looks awesome. The only one I voted for. - andrethegiant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Cookbook looks great, but I ended up not voting for it because it's not something I would spend my money on. I don't really cook much (easy mac ftw) and i don't think this app would help me cook more. I think the niche is too small compared to apps like Blossom or Atmosphere.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2On Atmosphere being eye candy:
I recently installed desktopia, an app that schedules bg changes-the default bg set is a sun rising and setting. Although this seems useless, given the clock in the menubar and the abundance of windows in my room it adds to the experience of computing.
Its been keeping me aware of the time, and makes the desktop appear a little more organic. I can honestly say I've been more productive since installing it, and when the night sky appears (11:00) I know to get ready for bed. - weneedsound, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Blossom is my favorite. I work at home and I know how productivity can be tough to keep up (Thanks Digg). Blossom would A) Guilt me into working harder and B) Make a game out of productivity..
Anyhow.. I hope that program is developed even if it doesn't win. - wphj, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Atmosphere is so pointless. Look out a window!
How is it worth the extra resources? - unfinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The killer part of this app is going to be the meal planning:
You add in all the dishes that you like to make all the time (along with the new ones you want to try), and then drag them out into the calender for the days you want to prepare them. You set what days you're going grocery shopping, and it creates grocery lists for you based on what you need before you go shopping again. Infinitely useful for me and my wife. - Elric1977, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not sure the point of this, considering it's not even available yet, they charge for everything on that site. Earth Desktop, blah sounds cool, but I ain't buying it.
Spam. - stoavio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice app but
HIJACK FTW :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes it was atmosphere, and the forum post regarding it got totally out of hand before being locked. Cookbook links to this digg from its front page, and will most likely garner a rise in votes from this front page digg, and while it may be unfair to the other contestants, that's what happens with a user submitted content site like digg. Unfortunate in some ways, as marketing has helped skew the outcome, but that's real life.
http://mydreamapp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=1259 - afruff23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If the actual app doesn't use an iTunes-like interface, allows for exporting to other formats (html, txt), and can retrieve new recipes from an online databse, then I vote yes.
- nguerra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sure he was great at Pheonix Wright: Ace Attorney. But I do agree with his point about fairness. Link to the competition in general but it is, if only in principal, a little unfair to try and gain direct votes.
- SteveSgt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One significant feature this app lacks is the main reason I would use any kind of menu, recipe, or meal-planning software: Nutritional Analysis.
I'm not talking about just calorie counting. It should have the ability to query the USDA database and calculate the full range of measurable micronutrients, including, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and the various phytonutrients and flavinoids. As you develop a recipe or a meal plan you should be able to search on ingedients in the database and find them by how they balance the nutritional profile. - unfinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since the app doesn't exist yet, I guess you could do that in theory - I'm just thinking that there's limited interest in flavinoids...
