- stublag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Man that is so much easier than downloading a dashboard widget ('_' )
- flake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Be better to wait til spring when MS will release proper converters like there is already for Windows version of Office 2k and above
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"The solution Microsoft should release.. but won't."
And why is that? - Memnochxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Microsoft Office 2007 allows you to save the file so that it will be compatible with Word 97 and 2003. When a file of the new .docx format is opened in a previous version of Word the program responds by asking if you'd like to download an add-in. The user will then be able to open and edit this file, although any new features will either be replaced or deleted.
What's the problem? - elmimmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Either that or that is simply not true for the the Mac version of Word, which is what this is all about.

"You work for 3 fortune 500 companies and they just need 1 mac guy. Yeah, sounds like you're taking over the world there."
Gee, I'm sorry if Macs need less maintenance than Windows machines, but that's just how it is. Since you care-- I'm on site one day per week at two of those places, and the third has an internal IT department that can take care of the little stuff and only calls me in for problems they can't figure out and to handle new machine or software rollouts.
BTW, at my last job I was the sole support guy for well over 100 Macs spread out among three sites-- that was back in the pre-OS X days, and I still spent most of my days surfing the web and reading in my office. Aside from the occasional dead hard drive or other hardware issue, most of my calls back then involved coaxing open Office documents sent from Windows-based companies who were quick to upgrade to the latest Office version.
~Philly - jayhawkstudent, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4At least mac users will be able to see the document. Not good to miss an important memo because you can't open the attachment in the email.
- aboris26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why are Windows users on Digg so bitchy? Its like they have a personal problem whenever someone posts an Apple story. Office Mac 2004 is a pretty good product and all we need is support for this new format while we patiently wait for the next Office Mac. I really don't understand this whole PC user idea of a Mac "Auroa" or Mac users are gay thing, I've have multiple people approach me at University and verbally insult me because I have a Mac. I've just switched from IBM's and I'm starting to understand how Mac users feel, its like PC users have to defend their choice to you. All I know is that there's a lot of hot college girls with Macs that want Mac advice :)
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Perhaps the problem is that Word 97 and Word 2003 are PC programmes, not OS X apps.
There aren't currently MS-add-ins for Macs that will read these docs, though MS is promising them around April (ISTR).
This widget is handy to have in the meantime. - 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'll just send back any .docx file to the sender and demand that they send a .pdf instead
no ones blackberry/smart phone can read .docx!!
here's to .docx going the way of blu-ray,
yet another unnecessary file type / format - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3is this useful?
- Rockstarsid, on 12/06/2008, -0/+1Some more ways http://blogote.com/2008/featured-article/how-to-op ...
- bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Because the MacBU is lazy and incredibly inefficient?
- PhillyMJS, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7"few major work places use them as workstations...."
Remove head from sphinter before posting.
Three of my clients are Fortune 500 companies (to be more specific-- one is top 50, one is top 100, and one is just shy of top 200) and they all use Macs. Any company large enough to have an internal design department is likely to have at least some Macs in use as workstations.
Macs are have been getting increasingly popular in the workplace for the last 18-24 months. I can say this with confidence because I'm the only Mac consultant at my company, and my billing in that time has gone through the roof. We're actually looking for a second Mac guy because I'm spread too thin. (In fact, if there are any good Mac guys in the Philadelphia metro area looking for a new job...)
~Philly - darkmotion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good work mate
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also if you've actually USED office 2k7 you have an option to save it as a plain old .doc .
- AreUAnEeeedjit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6You work for 3 fortune 500 companies and they just need 1 mac guy. Yeah, sounds like you're taking over the world there.
- SirOracle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Or we all play nice with each other and install a odf-plugin and stop this format-war once and for all :)
- dagoyvind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here is a .docx to .doc converter enjourni. It's free, simple, fast and based on Ajax :) http://www.docx2doc.com
- AreUAnEeeedjit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This is a non-issue as only 47 people in the world are using Office 2007, for exactly this reason. No business wants to upgrade and be caught in the file version mismatch farce.
- comichael, on 02/24/2009, -0/+0And here are some more http://converter.tds.lv
- enjourni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Show me a .docx to .doc converter, and I'll care.
- oepapel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Absolutely! They never improved on the Wordstar file format! Actually, we never should have progressed passed edlin. Now that I think about it, punchcards were the shizzat.
Religious wars over something as arbitrary as file formats is for n00bs! If you had used a computer for more than 3 weeks then you'd realize that change and progress is the fundamental tenet of computing. - benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4The problem is Mac fanboys have one less thing to bitch about if they read your post.
- darkzealot89, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Macs have little of the main market, and few major work places use them as workstations....
Just quit the complaining about MsOffice, if Microsoft wants to leave Apple out of the party they can since they rule the marketplace. - jsdratm, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3.DOCX files are for n00bS!!1
- thepromise, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Hey, a use for a widget!
- ih8apple, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1OMG....You shouldn't be allowed on this website if you dont know what "Dashboard" is...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2What dashboard? The 360 dashboard?
- macslut, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3Step 1 - Buy Parallels for $80.
Step 2 - Download any free Bittorrent client.
...
Step 4 - Use Windows Office Enterprise 2007 to convert the document.
