It's official. I've just confirmed the Apple iMammal. - nicheplayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Yeah! Like gravity!
- Pluckie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21i'll give you a hint, it's a big number
- jakebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22It would be pretty dope if Apple invented a mammal....
Just saying. - NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Screw this, I'm waiting for the Macphone or Macphone Pro.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17"Confirmation" will only come when one of the following two things happen:
1) The FCC publish the Apple filing for the iPhone, as they do for all mobile phones a few months before they come to market.
2) Apple announce iPhone at a conference/on their website.
Before then everything else is a rumor. - NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I'm Ron Burgundy?
- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11News is better with question marks?
- xmetal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7why couldn't there be 15" Macbooks? There were multiple sizes of iBooks, and I'm sure a lot of people would like a 15" DualCore Apple laptop that was less expensive than the pros.
- randomboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Oh, so you think they're buying 12M cell phones for internal use?
- rkettner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Why does a news title end in a question mark? That is just lame. Either it is confirmed, or it isn't.
You stay classy, San Diego. I'm Ron Burgundy? - longofest, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9No new MacBooks. Foxconn/Hon Hai is simply becoming another manufacturer of the MacBook Pro. The iPhone part is interesting though...
http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/11/20061115090741.shtml - angelof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Well, that's because Apple is the best... actually it's because Apple has so much secrecy surrounding future products. No one really cares what Dell will be releasing. However, there really should be a Windows tab.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7They could get around the FCC thing by announcing it in January at Macworld, but shipping it a couple of months later, whereby the FCC will have their end finished by then, and Apple can still have their surprise factor. That conference/event is called Macworld will be called Macworld by the way.

I own a Mac. I will probably but an iPhone but for the love of Steve, stop it. STOP IT. When it's released, let me know. STOP WITH THE RUMORS . - FreeiPodGuy.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Stop it? This isn't funny anymore?
- pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think he meant 'Leopard'
- LesOReilly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That is funny since Apple just put the all new MacBooks with Core2Duo on the website. You must have had solid insight that this was a fact
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If this is for real, I imagine the release date will now be set back a few months while Apple fires Hon Hai for having loose lips and finds another factory to take the job.
- TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah... it's always great to come across Apple stories that include confirmed or confirmation, and end with a question mark. Yet another apple rumor? Confirmed.
- Skardhamar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oh no! Does this mean ... you WONT buy a Mac?
Boohoo. - bigjimslade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Could this guy be any more right?? http://www.misterbg.org/AppleProductCycle/
- lepton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think it is going to be a multipurpose device. iPod, phone, PDA, Apple Remote Desktop too. Details here:

have you checked the prices of unlocked cell phones recently? Even the ones that would normally be "free" (with activation and a 2 year commitment) cost at least $150 retail..and that's for the basic model that just makes calls and sends text on a T-9 keypad. That is no music, no WERTY, no camera, no MP3 playback.
$600 for an unlocked iphone is not hard to imagine, especially for retail. If it were to be bundled with a 2+ year Sprint/Verizon/Tmobile contract then you might be able to get it for $200-$300 (it is a phone + ipod after all) but that's on the cheap end. - lostngone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well when the Treo 650 came out it was just under 600 for the unlocked GSM version. So I could see Apple selling a phone for that much.
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@jdc760 - "They make various peripherals including mice and the Zune."
Good one!
Bookmark this thread, by the way. It will be funny to look back on in 18 months when the Zune is sitting on the shelf next to Microsoft Bob, WebTV and the SPOT Watch. - alternnate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Is it just me or are we seeing the same effect here in Digg that Jon Stewart talked regarding the news titles in FoxNews: you put the thing that you want to say in the title, regardless of if it is true or not, and had a question mark in the end.
Let me give some examples:
"Confirmation of iPhone?"
"Wii graphics better than PS3?"
"PS3s malfunction around the world?"
"Apple officially considered best company in the world?" - Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You are probably right, but I'm holding out hope for a 15" MacBook.
- JuyLe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I only trust what I see.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Panther"
Huh? - Pluckie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'm going to be honest, the iPhone rumors are getting quite tiring...
With that being said, it should be an amazing product. - randall814, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah. what kind of question is that? there were 12" powerbooks and of course this 12" ibook that i am on right now. this seems quite likely.
the silly thing is though, if they do this, very little will seperate the macbook from the pro. only the graphics power, finish, and speakers is all i can think of. - akira117, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Some Times?
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The MacBook Pro still comes with "a little bit more" of everything except Hard Drive space.
Eg Faster firewire, faster cpu, more L2 cache (2MB for the slower 1.86GHz CPU (the starting config for the MacBook), the 2.0, 2.16 and 2.33 all have 4MB).
Perhaps the biggest difference is that a MacBook can't run the 30 inch Cinema Display. How long will it be till we see onboard graphics capable of that? Perhaps not that long...
The MacBook has a longer lasting battery, but if you bump up the screen size to 15 inches I bet that advantage disappears.
There's the different keyboards. Calculator style vs backlit. Whatever floats your boat.
Now, the price difference between 17" and 15" is $300. Except that they have a different base hard drive sizes. The 15" has a 120, the 17" has a 160. To bump the 15" up to 160 as well costs $100. So the increase in screen size only costs $200. So if we whack $200 onto the top end MacBook (for a 15" model) we would get a price of $1699 compared to the MacBook Pro's starting price of $1999.
Now contrast with the difference betwen the two 15" MacBook Pro models. The only differences there are:
An extra 1GB of Ram ($175 value at Apple's pricing *cough*)
An extra 128MB of Video Ram
An extra 0.16 GHz
Which would _also_ be the differences between a 2.0 GHz MacBook 15" (if there were such a beast) and entry level MacBook Pro 15".
If we equalize the Ram of the 15" MacBook Pros, we find that the price difference of $500 goes down to $325.
So. To recap.
Bumping from a 13" 2.0 GHz MacBook up to a 15" 2.16 GHz MacBook (if there were such a beast), you'd expect the price to be $1499 (of course it will be only in Black (or maybe RED?)) plus $200 for screen size bump plus $325 for the CPU and Video Card.
Your theoretical 15" MacBook with the same specs as 15" MacBook Pro would therefore cost $2024. Or $25 more than the equivalent MacBook Pro (since we know the premium on the black paint is $50, we can now deduce that the premium on the silver paint is $25).
On the other hand, if you just took the black 13" MacBook and made it 15" (and kept the cpu at 2.0GHz and didn't add a video card), you'd expect that model to cost $200 more, or $1699. Then, if you decided that the video card, bigger hard drive and faster cpu was worth $300 you'd prefer the MacBook Pro.
In conclusion, there is no 'Pro tax'. The pricing of MacBook Pros is pretty much perfectly in line with the pricing on the MacBooks. - Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, this is unofficially confirmed?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like radioactivity! hehe
- fitchmicah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha good job on that one buddy
- J3R3MY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree, what would be the purpose of making a 15-inch MacBook when there is a MacBook Pro?
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@xmetal - the only reason they made the 14" iBook is some older people couldn't read the 12". Both were 1024x768. They also had a significant distinction between the iBook and the PowerBook: aspect ratio.
My point is they need to keep some compelling reason for power users to buy the "pro" notebook instead of the "consumer" one. If they made a 15" MB, then the people who are willing to shell out for the 15" screen will buy the MB instead of the MBP. There's no good reason to go eroding their margins like that. - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@jdc760:
I was referring specifically to personal computers.
Mice, keyboards, mp3, players, etc. they both do that, so it doesn't really affect the equation. How many desktops, laptops or servers does Microsoft sell? - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The only solid confirmation that Apple is working on an iPhone was from that guy that found phone related command labels inside one of the iPod nano firmware update (v1.2)
kPhoneSignalStrength, clPhoneCallHistoryModel, prPhoneSettingsMenu, prPhoneSettingsMenuView, t_feature_app_PHONE_APP...
http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1888
It doesn't prove that Apple will release an iPhone, but it's certainly a more concrete hint than all of these other "rumors" that Apple is at least experimenting with the idea.
Note that these command labels were removed from the last iPod nano update (1.3) - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Sure, let's start a Microsoft topic, Digg. It could be called "Futility".
BTW, HP, Dell and other PC brands would go in the HARDWARE section, since they are HARDWARE companies. Microsoft stories would go in the SOFTWARE section, because they are a SOFTWARE company.
Apple has its own topic because they make an end to end solution of BOTH Hardware and Software, which makes them unique. Ergo, their own topic. - bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Stephen Colbert said that?
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Thankfully, along with giving Apple stories their own section, comes the benefit of being able to easily ignore all Apple stories if they are uninteresting to you... just go to your profile, then go to 'Manage Topics' and uncheck the 'Apple' checkbox in the 'Technology' section; problem solved!
- bsummersett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Above poster incorrect?
- Sentinel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm so sick of hearing about the iPhone
- vinterstille, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1so funny and so true!
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wasn't it Stephen Colbert?
- fitchmicah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1well that settles it then, I'm buying one
- SgtStymie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thats good considering I just bought the new 2 Core Duo MB Pro this weekend.
