- cnt2infinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Nice. How many screws or parts left over this time?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14i actually spilled beer on the motherboard while in the process disassembling my macbook.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Cool, iPorn.
- CoolDude330, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You might as well of stopped, you really ought to not dissasemble your expensive laptop while drunk.
- thirdtenor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8doesn't look that bad

- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@mikeazorin
Pigs will fly before that happens.
Who'd wanna risk messing up a ~ $1000 laptop to save $40? - pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7not to much thermal paste in there. that looks like it's within acceptability.
- heymark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Are the feelings of the Taiwanese factory workers that put these together even considered? Sites like this could destroy their motivation to do their job correctly.
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Good for folks needing to remove the excess thermal grease and add their own proper amount. (As well as a DVD-RW drive while they are at it.)
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I prefer to use mine! I'll leave the dissecting to some other more adventurous users ;)
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You're mean to put the beer down when your working! I should know look at my username ;)
- CatFood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I whould totally buy that! My iBook came in a shoe box with a cup of screws, and it's still running to this day. I'd love to buy a "MacKit".
- brandizzle, on 10/28/2007, -1/+5"Who'd wanna risk messing up a ~ $1000 laptop to save $40?"
Me.
Not even for saving 40 dollars, because I'd simply enjoy putting it together. - bigballajrich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is tight. Very useful
- fullgl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Sweet... now I can take this thing apart in 3 years and really get my hands dirty... anyone else notice that there wasn't as much thermal paste as on the MBP? Are they learning?
- lnxaddct, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5superal,
The heat issues are way overblown. A few isolated incidents that all the mac-haters are screaming about. Seriously, the laptops run pretty cool, I'd recommend one. - DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3what socket are those cpu's?
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6ahh, this thermal grease issue. I want a Macbook so bad, but all this heat stuff, I am afraid of getting one.
- DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm not sure you would want to remove any thermal grease. unless of course...you want a vasectomy via burning MacBook.
- tomkinsc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I started a site, http://www.takeitapart.net , to show how to disassemble things like this. Recently a wiki was added so users could contribute their own disassembly guides. I wish someone with a macbook and an adventurous screwdriver would photograph a macbook disassembly guide of their own and and add it to the wiki... this Digg story is exactly the thing we hope to create a resource for.
Dugg! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That was quick.
- gol706, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Anyone else think that that case doesn't look very fun to work inside. Way to many screws and wires going all over the place. My dell is much easier to disassemble and assemble. On the other hand, perhaps the Apple wouldn't give me reasons to need to take it apart like this shoddy dell has.
- aafuss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Official one:
http://tinyurl.com/ndx2x - andyzweb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hehe i like the Idea of a mac kit
- DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2that must have been ~40 screws 0.o
- theRIAA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3that was fun..... wheres my watch?
- b.m.a.n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2thats pretty well done
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apple, you think you'd never do this, but I'd love to get a box of parts in the mail, spend a few hours tinkering, and end up with a shiny new OS X box.
Maybe this is an eBay concept in the mean time: someone buys broken Macs, gets replacement parts, and sells the old and new parts together, disassembled, as a kit. - muaddib420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hell, after seeing all those different length tiny little screws, i'm definitely NOT going to go mucking around with arctic silver in my macbook. this is not like opening up a windoze box and adding more ram.
- dupswapdrop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2All you need to take apart an apple is a hammer and a beer!
- mennis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2One and it was the one that holds the processor to the heat-pipe. Doh!
- veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no sockets here my friend
- fullgl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You would just follow the steps in reverse! :)
- stalky14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, but if all you're doing is replacing the thermal compound, you can probably forego all the steps after the heat sink removal.
I upgraded the hard drive in my G3 iBook using instructions from this site. Talk about screws! I am beyond thrilled that my future MacBook has an easy-access hard drive. - ggko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The secret to alcohol based cooling is to keep it *inside* the bottle!
http://totl.net/Eunuch/ - irate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep, they are doing much better. MacBook Pro http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/85/images_large/44.jpg http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/85/images_large/46.jpg vs. MacBook http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/86/images_large/41.jpg
- alexmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Taken from the "Optical Drive" page:
Step 2:
"Disconnect the orangle optical drive ribbon cable from the logic board."
I'm still not sure whether they meant orange or the one on an angle. What the hell, let's pull both... *sparks fly into the avid disassemblers eyes, causing him to go insane* - salmonrushdee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i like how the article is about "complete _disassembly_." i mean, isn't the hard part making the thing not end up like your suitcase before you go to the airport? it looked like all the chapters stopped when all items were removed...
- jediorange, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was really surprised about how easy it was to disasemble my MacBook. Every other Mac I've owned was a pain in the 4$$ to take apart. I was able to take my new MacBook apart, and reassemble it, with no instructions, in less then 30 min. All you need is a #00 phillips screwdriver. Usually the first time I do this to a laptop, I have to dedicate 2 hours, just to make sure it all gets back together again. I must say, it's about time.
- mbradbury, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Tricky. To release the battery locking screw you rotate it "clockwise"
- kwiens, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Great!
- bjoernkah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0could you please mark the components on the photos that makes the "whine" and the "mooh"?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1double post
