http://alienraid.org/article.php?story=icecuberaid - Brainwave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18They should have penguins in there.
- samanathon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16There is a twist: A server room that needs a heater!
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Is it just me, or was the ingenious idea of looking for neutrinos in the south pole a lot more interesting than what kind of server setup they had?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Much more worthy of the front page, yes!
- galador, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@brendanc
Who? Oh, right. You must be talking about that guy I blocked a while back for not belonging on the Internet. Gotcha. - montrey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6so how cold is it? jeez useless story
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Either you don't have a clue what big iron means or you are terrible at sarcasm, for your sake I hope it's the latter.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_iron - jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cold? Its a Xserve.. In a mountain!
- bullox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How many Xserve Raid setups do you think are on the south pole?
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3cool
- bullox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3As if I needed to be any more proud of my Badgers. Not only is the basketball team ranked 2nd and the football team ended the season ranked 5th (and both mens and womens hockey teams won the championship last year), but they also do crazy stuff like this.
- superpixel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3what if the system freezes up? *badum ching*
- MikeTheC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The article doesn't say how they're actually *cooling* the XServes. So I will do the equivalent of giving it one dig for the interesting location that Apple's servers can be found, and one bury due to there not being any apparent unique angle on the story or there not being any unique cooling system
So I'm remaining neutral on this. Oh yeah, and I hope they're careful not to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow. - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1or some sony batteries in the UPS should do it.
- kirakun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They probably have done nothing else to do the cooling. Just let the room temperature cool it off. At best, only exhaust fans would be installed to circulate the air from the outside. But it's all my speculation only.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"""one dig for the interesting location that Apple's servers can be found"""
Although to be fair an Apple Xserve RAID is not a server, it's just a bunch of disks in a big box with a fancy controller - ie a storage device for servers. - brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3It's only a matter of time til "diggmirrors" spams.. get ready!
Anyway, screw the xserves.. I want to see the data/images they come up with. A view from the south pole will be awesome! (no light polution to speak of, really... except for the very *very* little that bounces around the atmosphere) - sysadmin88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree, server setup doesn't look impressive at all...except for the cooling idea....
- monergism, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4If your iron is melting, you got bigger problems. Not to mention iron melting isn't our concern. It's more about the chips and connectors and cables.
- battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1I don't getcha.
