- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+96Of course it'll run 10.4! Lay off the crack buddy, a G3 can run Tiger.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -13/+101I've ***** had it. Tomorrow morning I'm getting up before the sunrise to start production of a line of Kevin Rose action figures and blow up dolls. You fanboys will make me wealthy beyond my admittedly limited imagination.
- JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48Most of us would rather gouge out our eyes than vist MySpace, given the choice.
- stoops, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45Still makes me wonder why they would take such an incredibly educational show off the air. TSS was my favourite show on T.V. since 2001 as I'm sure it was for most of us diggers.
- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37God that sound was horribly annoying.
- tafkase7en, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Gotta love that quality!....
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I help someone with an old G4/400, who uses it every day for InDesign and other publishing work. She's running Tiger just fine thanks - and each OS update (including Tiger) has made the computer a little snappier.
Would someone who have built a PC around that same time be loading Vista on it today? - skidogallard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14It was definitely my favorite show on tv back in the day. I remember going over to my grandparents house and watching it on their satellite dish. That show was just about the only reason I wanted my parents to get a satellite dish.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17"You could run Vista on a five year old machine. You just wouldn't see any of the Aero crap, but it would run fine."
I think a G4/400 is a lot more than five years old. - JustADude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Pretty sure folks are talking about the processor, not the station, cupcake.
- EmberX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I have a G4 400Mhz Single CPU Sawtooth (AGP Graphics) running 10.4.8 as we speak. So you are burried for being inaccurate. *clicks thumbs down*
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I miss the "Dark Tipper"
- aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Yeah, but you're not building it to save money- You're building it to have fun tinkering around and be able to tell your friends "Yeah, I built my mac myself!"
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9And I think it'd run Leopard too. "From G4 to Xeon, there's just one Leopard."
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Google OSX86
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Can I digg you up 56 times?
- Sabin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I run tiger just fine on my G4 powerbook at 566 Mhz with 512 ram. Curious to see what happens with leopard.
- pixeldust, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yes, Jobs is an idiot, that is why Apple is doing so poorly. If only they had your money to help them make ends meet.
- MKinMotion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Did he say screw hole?
- greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I wonder how you could do that nowadays with the intel architecture... I've been itching to build another computer for awhile. Anyone know?
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"You could run Vista on a five year old machine. You just wouldn't see any of the Aero crap, but it would run fine."
I wouldn't like to try it. It'd be like running Windows 98 on a 486...
"I think a G4/400 is a lot more than five years old."
It's over 7.5 years since the first G4 hit the shelves. I have one and, with the upgrades it has (Radeon 9200/128MB and 768MB RAM and a 7200rpm 40GB hard drive) it makes a very decent stab at running OS X 10.4 indeed. I actually use ot for running Photoshop CS2 and it's pretty bearable. With some hackery even Quartz Extreme works on it (though I don't tend to use it becuase it really doesn't need it to be usable). The only thing the PCI machines won't do is Core Image - kind of a bummer as it stops Video playback working in Front Row (which also runs like silk on it). 7.5 years ago Intel was still turning out 450MHz Pentium IIIs - I can't imagine Vista running on that - can you?
For a laugh I'm gonna throw Leopard at it and see what happens :) - tw0bit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7He never told us what the 2 extra pins are for... Kevin, do you think you can tell us now?
- ij00mini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7So why were there two extra pins on the Mac power supply?
- jpwilde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7But if you could buy an intel mac mother board from somewhere, (like the mac motherboard shop mentioned in the video?) wouldn't that have the firmware on it already?
- d3designs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Um, i don't know where you have been, but OSX does run on normal computers.
Standard X86 hardware. Nothing special,
http://wiki.osx86project.org - Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Sorry, did you just criticise Steve Jobs for being capitalist?
- arostad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow I miss this show!!
- geoffpado, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@sockpuppets: Don't forget plushies and bobbleheads.
- aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5same reason you would want to build a pc. Its fun, you know exactly what is in the box and its a great learning experience.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Most of us would rather gouge out our eyes than touch a Mac :-P"
Incorrect - mpeters13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5wow this is a blast to the past. that even looks like kevin before all the alcohol
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"It would be so much easier if Jobs wasn't an idiot and allowed OS X to run on the normal computer architecture that Linux and XP run just fine on. No he has to be a capitalist bastard. Oh I'm sorry did I just bash Apple? I forgot Apple can do no wrong! Whatever, its just my money that Apple won't be getting and Windows will be."
Yeah, Jobs is a real idiot because he's making money not doing what you want him to do.
Apple is a hardware company, they sell computers. OS X is a means to sell their computers. They are not like Microsoft, a SOFTWARE company, who depends on having their product on as many brands as possible.
Apple is not set up to be a software company, so listen very carefully: Apple will never, I repeat NEVER, sell OS X for standard PCs unless they want to kiss their PC sales goodbye. That was IBM's mistake. Back in the 80's, IBM foolishly refused to take potential competition and the PC market seriously, and didn't lock down their hardware and MS-DOS. Since Microsoft was free to sell DOS to anybody they wished, this spawned the era of "PC compatibles." Other companies like Compaq made knock-off computers that were cheaper and more powerful than the "real" IBM PCs. Because they all ran the same OS and could all run the same software, it was a no-brainer for most consumers. We saw what happened to IBM, heck they don't even MAKE consumer PCs anymore, and were out of the market long before that. When was the last time you saw a real *IBM* computer on a store shelf?
The thing about IBM is that they're a diversified company and have been since their inception, they survived because they make a lot of money building servers and mainframes. Apple unfortunately is not so diversified. Keeping their OS locked to Mac hardware drives sales of Mac hardware. They actually tried letting other manufacturers make Apple compatibles once, only to have the exact same thing that happened to IBM happen to them: lower hardware sales and near financial disaster.
So in short, Jobs is not an idiot. If he allowed OS X to run on normal computers, then he would be. - samuelcotterall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4...and Kevin used to claim he wasn't really a Mac guy.
It's amazing to think that the G4 is however many years old and it's only a year since they dropped the PowerBook and MacMini ranges. Now they are so cheap on eBay I think they make a great starter Mac, or a decent media server. - afred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ skidogallard
I know what you mean. My buddy (fellow digger now) would record episodes on VHS so i could watch TSS. - sidizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here you go. http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1886870,00.asp
- Herald42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wait. It's not *not* G4? Does that mean it is G4? I am so confused.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3because educational = less money.
- Sethwm2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nice. I never missed TSS I watched it every night.. One night the cable was out at my house and I went to my neighbors house to watch it!! I remember this being on TV. I miss ***** like this. Evil demented people took TSS off the air. I love the TWIT network, Revision 3, but it will never be the same. TSS was something that I looked forward to watching all day. Especially after a hot days working outside
- ComputerNap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That's really okay by us. We don't want people like you ruining our community anyhow. That's why it's constructed the way it is.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3More ghey K Rose worship. *yawn*
- spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Freudian slip.
- skidogallard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the biggest obstacle to get around is the fact that Apple uses EFI instead of BIOS to boot their Intel Macs.
- SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2On the last Diggnation Kevin and Alex were talking about how they miss doing this kind of thing. Funny how there was no mention of Systm.
- penneyisok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Okay have people completely forgotten about the VIDEO section on digg?
edit:I have no idea why it replied to the last comment - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2n/m
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.adelphiapowerpage.com/components/showcaseItems.cfm
Some old TSS/CFH stuff. I think the fact that, despite much of the information is rather dated, the fact that these segments are still entertaining is a testament to the quality of programming. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Totally. Now G4 is showing Cops.
That's right....COPS. And not just once in a while. They show COPS ALL THE ***** TIME. What the hell does COPS have to do with Video games? - viperssxt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2stuff like this is what made tss such a good show and now we have aots witch sucks
- coollettuce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OMG!!! I've finally reached my goal!!!! Did this make front page??? I can't ***** believe it! I might die if this makes it to diggnation!!!
Sorry for all the exclamation points!!! I'm so excited!!! - danr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was thinking about this, what constitutes the mac hardware needed to legally install OSX? Is a mac motherboard w/ no other mac parts considered a mac in terms of the license? (not that it would stop you from doing this anyway)
