CNN: Apple TV is an AMAZING doorstop!
money.cnn.com — In a CNN Money story "The Trouble with Apple TV" it is suggested that "Steve Jobs' latest is a dud", reminds us of past Jobs failures, and implies that the product doesn't bode well for the iPhone. Ever helpful, and not wanting to be a downer, CNN illustrates how useful Apple TV is as a doorstop, furniture leveler, and sushi platter.

- moisie, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2It has its shortcomings but I would reserve judgement since they've made it quite clear that they'll be updating it. It's also one of those markets where you could say that the hardware isn't as important as the software - which is growing and changing all the time.
- wageslaven, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10The apple TV didnt deliver much "wow" in a market where Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, TiVo, cable-company-branded DVR, Slingbox, home-built PCs, Windows Media Center PCs and many many other devices have been doing far far far more for far far less (in many cases).
As a 3rd attempt at the living room from Apple (1st: Pippin, 2nd: Macintosh TV, 3rd: Apple TV) -- they've missed again. The Battle for the Living Room is well underway, and Apple's third shot is _another_ failure.
The connected, broad purpose (more than a media-player) device is going to trump a media-player connected with video-output at this stage in the game. - GopherGod, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9It is a dud for the simple fact it only runes itunes on your TV.
What the mass consumer wants is something that connects their PC to the TV, not just one piece of software.
Think about it, who would pay $300+ to connect iTunes to the TV? - Quix, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Apple could turn the AppleTV from dud to hit in a heartbeat: by announcing HD content (even 720p) in iTunes. There's really no compelling reason for me to buy one right now. The video isn't as good as a DVD (nor is the audio), and I can DVR standard-def stuff on my TiVo all day long. But give me HD content, and I suddenly have a reason to buy.
Come on Steve, just flip that switch and make it so! - MercedRocks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2What it really comes down to is price and content selection...........Jobs could easily solve these problems just as he did with iTunes long ago.
- Birdoftruth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1article buried because duplicate article on front of digg right now.

- canewediggit, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3dugg for the pics. now, if i could stream some dj krush out of it while using it as the sushi platter, i might consider it.
- djbelieve, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13I wish people would quit bashing Apple TV. The form factor is great for stopping doors, much better than say...a TiVo box. My wife was constantly tripping over our last doorstop (an old TurboGrafx-16), but since we upgraded to an Apple TV she's had no problems. And it matches the drapes!
- claybird, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Atleast now I can actually use those cards under my table that have been keeping it from being wobbly.
- Kelgann, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1If they had a subscription service where you could get a ton of different HDTV, and dropped the price to $150, I might consider it. Otherwise, get this piece of junk out of my face. I'm so tired of seeing Digg stories about this piece of trash.
- lieutenantmudd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1For a product to be a dud, someone needs high expectations of it. Jobs has admitted the AppleTV is not a full court press. He called it a hobby in that article yesterday.
Give the product time, and give a chance to focus on things after the iPhone comes out. Would I buy one now? No. But does fact make it a doorstop? No.
Also, you don't need an HDTV. So his claimed greatest weakness is not even true. The real greatest weakness is no HD iTunes content, and that can be easily fixed once Apple has the time and effort to fix it- benitojuarez, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"For a product to be a dud, someone needs high expectations of it. Agreed, but CNN is saying AppleTV is better used as a doorstop or a sushi platter. Come on thats classic.
